Having an issue detecting new wifi signals - Moto X General

Problem - Certain WIFI connections are not appearing on my phone, for example at work. Phone says that there are "wireless networks available" but nothing new shows up. But WIFI connections at home work. Since I have discovered this problem, I cant make "new" connections" basically. The connection at home works because i connected to it before i discovered this problem or I have deleted something along the way.
Usually I am the type that we go thru and uninstall useless programs / services off of my phone. I typically install custom ROMS that take care of this but I havent do so with the Moto X. I like the active display feature and want to keep it. I even go thru with App Op and disallow certain permissions thru out the system (mostly location services).
Can someone please help me. I feel like I could run a backup and reinstall 4.4 and I feel like it would go away but I was looking for a simpler way of fixing this.
Of course I can provide more details if needed.
Currently my phone is 4.4 Stock with root access.
thanks in advance

If you use WiFi analyzer do the signals show up in the app?

Installed the app. I'm currently at home, so i can't truly test it, but my home network and surrounding networks do show up.
Thanks for the quick response btw.

No worries!
That would seem to say that there's an issue with the settings program on the phone and not actually the hardware. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though...
Edit: have you tried wiping the cache?

i havent wiped the cache yet. can i achieve this within 4.4 or thru a custom recovery. The only time i have in the past, was with SafeStrap or BMM. which i havent installed neither on Moto X

Never seen an option to wipe cache inside the os, that would be something you'd have to do externally. Perhaps someone with a bit more insight can provide a more concrete solution.

My Tab is shy when it meets new networks

Whenever I am somewhere with a new network, my Tab is slow to recognize it. Sometimes the network will show up in the list of available networks for a brief moment, and then disappear before I can establish a connection. Other times I can connect by manually adding the SSID. Sent Sometimes turning the wifi off and then back on, or rebooting the Tab, works, but not always.
Most recently, I was in a place for almost an hour before it recognized the local network, even manually adding the SSID didn't help. The weird thing is, once it saw this network, it also saw several others in the neighborhood that previously were not shown on the list of available networks.
Once you I finally establish a connection, reconnecting to that network usually works without a problem.
Any thoughts?

Try a factory reset or if you are in any custom rom, try reflashing other rom.
Factoryreset willerase all your data so watch out.
Tried a factory reset... Didn't fix it. Here's the strangest thing: if I bring another network into the picture, all of a sudden it recognizes all the nearby networks. For example, right now I am in a place with 5 or 6 networks. Couldn't see any of them, until I fired up my cell phone's teather app, at which point it recognized not only the cell phone teather network but all of the others as well. It's almost as if it needs a new network to come along and wake it up. Other times though, it is my cell phone teather network that it won't see!

you need to mention if you have stock or non-stock, rooted or not, etc.
my best guess is that you are rooted and running a non-stock ROM. in this case, you should try another kernel. the wifi modules are the ones causing most of the problem, whatever the device. make sure you flash the proper wifi modules after the kernel!
otherwise... I would suggest to root. I heard all kind of crazy stories about our beloved Tab, so... don't fear trying different solutions until you get the one working for you.

Stock, not rooted. That's what makes this so frustrating - I haven't messed with anything, and it still doesn't work right! I'm running the most current Samsung android distribution for the Tab 10.1.
I've been avoiding rooting the Tab because one of the apps I use does a root check and won't run on a rooted device, but I think there is a workaround to that so rooting is definitely a possibility.
Rooting the device won't be sufficient in itself to solve this problem - I'd need to root and then install a different kernel, right? Or are there wifi modules I can install on top of the stock kernel (once I root the device)?
Any ideas on why this is happening and how I might fix it, short of rooting and installing a non-stock version of Android? My temporary fix is that I fire up FoxFi on my cell phone, and once the Tab sees the FoxFi network, it all of a sudden "sees" the other networks as well. But I've had several situations where I have my tablet but not my cell phone, and in those instances I can't get the Tab to recognize the new networks, even if I reboot the Tab or try messing around with the various networking settings. Note that a factory reset didn't fix this either.
Never mind - broke down and installed CM10.1.
I was having a similar issue on stock. I rooted and have since installed a few roms. I am a Much bigger fan of my tab now. I used infamous for a while and am now on the paranoid android 3.50 build which is awesome!
CM10.1 solved the shy network problem for me... And my tab is much more reliable now too.

Sprint LG G2, no tethering option, bought from best buy.

Hi. I bought my phone through best buy and noticed I don't any of the sprint apps. Ive been trying to get the native hotspot to work but the option to turn it on isnt in the menu.
I'm rooted and tried the iceroom and stock versions of native hotspot. Also I've contacted another user who had the same issue, no hotspot option, also purchased via best buy.. Which is kinda odd. Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way of fixing it?
ya know, the same thing happened w/ me.......bought the phone from best buy and was looking for a hotspot feature and lo-and-behold, theres none to be found, even enabled dev settings and didn't pop up. I'm kinda dumbfounded and i really like the stock OS coming from the galaxy s4 and was hoping there was a hidden setting for it or if theres a rom that enables it because i'd be all over that lol

Extremely odd that it hasn't been mentioned by anyone else either. I cant even use any of the other tethering apps (wifi tether, barnacle, etc etc), I recieve ad-hoc errors, which I'm assuming is the issue with the native hotspot not appearing in the menu.
Still looking for a way to fix this if anyone knows how, would greatly appreciate it.

No. The phone is rooted and Ive tried the wireless tether app, pdanet, barnacle. Every wireless app shows an ad-hoc error in the log while pdanet gives me a htc sync error 2.
Thing is theres no hotspot option in the menu. Im sure its like that for everyone who bought the phone from best buy.

My question is: Why would a carrier do that? That is an upsell that they want to extend to every smartphone purchase, it's lost revenue. That is why I'm perplexed and have placed a call to my friend (MGR for VZW).

Apparently this issue is caused by not fully finishing the activation process for Sprint. Sprint base apps install after activation... my sneaking suspicion is they are installed via the "Sprint ID" app but Im not sure. Either try doing the activation again, or more likely to work is to do a full factory reset and make sure you do not interrupt the process all the way thru activation.
You will then have your tethering options back. Its likely the reps at bestbuy are bypassing that part of the activation process by interrupting it so they can finish your sale and get you outta there faster. Might also be unintentional on their part but who knows.
Do a factory reset.
noob question... will factory reset remove root and twrp? i have both, stock rom. i already backed up via twrp. however, will i need to install everything again afterwards?
You need to do a factory reset, no It will not loose root or twrp. As soon as you the phone boots back up, update prl and profile. Make sure you are in a good data location or are hooked up on WiFi. After updating both of these your phone should install all the Sprint apps and you will have tether option in settings

As bigpappa pointed out... it's not necessarily a best buy thing. It's the fact the rep probably didn't finish the activation process when setting your phone up in store. It could have been any store... it's just coincidence that the people with the problem happen to have bought from best buy.
lol i don't doubt that but i just had to give him hell because he was essentially trying to call us out who didn't have the tethering option and "debunk" it when it was just a simple statement that it wasn't there and was curious as to why, ive never really seen that happen before w/ an incomplete activation but its not like it really matters because theres tethering mods n **** out there that enable it anyway so just had to give him a little bit of hell haha
so... i factory reset my phone and it never went thru the activation process again. when i tried to activate device in settings, it said it was already activated. i quit and just installed the cm nightlies and now have wifi tether but im curious as what the fix could be.
After activation the Sprint Zone app runs and installs all the sprint bloatware and base apps. If you didnt have sprint zone load and start installing those apps, or quit that process manually then you didnt finish full activation. If Sprint Zone failed to load after the factory reset I dont know what to tell you other than to do it again.

Sprint SM-N915P working Native Hotspot

-Installed the Galaxy Tools app, (not on playstore, see link below) opened app and enabled Native Hotspot.

1. You can't do it if you are in the area of an AirRave
2. You must have "CMDA/LTE" selected in the more mobile networks options. ---Although, once you are done and back in the area you are staying in and don't need a hotspot, choosing CDMA only get's a MUCH better signal.
Then yes, the GalaxyTools app will work.
If you select CDMA only do you still get 4G since you are not selecting LTE?

Ok two questions are you doing a Profile update after you run the program? If so you are rewriting the modification and that will remove the ability to use the tether hence the statement that you don't have a data plan with tether message.
2nd Do you have a Airrave? If so you CANT USE the tether with that running, also if your towers are not running well in your area you will see the lost data connection at times, simply turn the tether on again or your local towers don't have the capacity to use the tether at this time. Which leads to the question have you used it anywhere else other then where you have tried to use it now? (i.e in a location with better towers)

looks like the sprint version is Not working dated 11/26 ?? Did you go the tmobile route? Can you explain which route you went to Root the sprint version?
I initially tried the spring method and when it didnt work i ended up flashing the tmobile version. Im guessing this tether thing doesnt work because of the towers around here. Although the sprint coverage map doesnt show it working here, i do get the spark icon at the top. I hadnt been updating profile or any of that other stuff, it just doesnt work even in cdma only. Urgent Help require: Note 3 “Smart Network Switch" not working anymore.

Hi there,
Recently I discovered this issue: the “Smart Network Switch" is not working anymore.
For me this is very important, as here wifi connection is not that great like the Mobile Data network here. Wifi internet sometime downs without any notification but Mobile data network is 100% uptime 24x7. But so far the " Smart Network Switch" helps me great as I’ve to stay online over skype always, if the wifi lost internet then it automatically switch to HSPDA which helps me to stay online always even if I’m unaware the wifi internet is down.
Earlier even if the wifi internet link is ok still sometime it was switching to HSPDA by saying internet is slow, I don’t mind that but recently I was noticing even if the wifi was down for long time it wasn’t switching to HSPDA.
In short the "Smart Network Switch" isn’t working at all at any condition. I doubt it could be due to any recent installed app. But I’m not sure which one could. I checked the all recent installed apps accessibility list and removed Airdriod and CM Security which had full network access. But still that didn’t help.
I’m sure this is due to a software bug not a hardware issue. For more input and clues:
# Since over last six month my phone lost the vibration, the vibration motor is not working, I tested with hardware test. I’m really not happy with this phone. Its not yet completed 1year and couldn’t find any nearest service center. So its still working without the vib feature.
# Recently I’ve upgraded the local WIFI setup with a primary dual band TP-Link router and another wifi router as bridge with same SSID and password, this is to get better wifi coverage. Due to this dual router the wifi coverage is at full bar everywhere and the phone has the same. But I think this is nothing to do with this.
Please advice. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. No I don’t want to factory reset for now, this would be my last option as I have to a lots of work to get everything back, apps and data, setup etc.
No I did not removed the certificates from those apps. Never did this before. When I uninstall I always clear all data of those apps and then uninstall. How do I find certificates of those apps? I know the certificate location but don’t know how to find those specifically.
I removed them as device administrators if its require, if a app in dev admin, it cannot be uninstall.
Please advice. Thanks
Sorry, credentials, not certificates. Bloody autocorrect....
Settings > security. Scroll all the way down. You can either clear all user-added credentials all at once by hitting clear credentials, or look it up and deselect it manually under trusted credentials.
Sent From My Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N9005 Using Tapatalk
Yes here credentials are CA certificates, after reading your 1st post I checked that but there was none user added, all are system and its a huge list. Also the clear option grayed out as nothing there to delete.
I wiped system cache partition from recovery, ran it under safe mode but nothing helps. So I doubt this will fix even after formatting to factory setting. It could be a hardware issue.
The issue has been fixed after formatting and factory resetting the phone.

Mobile Data stops working, and MMS does not work (CM 13)

First the basics. Nexus 6p received 3/30. I did NOT turn it on and update it to the latest stock firmware before proceeding. Rather I immediately unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP, installed CM13 and GApps Nano from OpenGApps. Running on T-Mobile's network using a cut down Micro SIM from my Oneplus One down to Nano size.
I'm running the latest CM13 release snapshot, ZN0EAO1T5, and my mobile data will work initially with LTE upon boot or restart. After a short time (minutes) it will no longer have a data connection. Calls and SMS still go through. While the data is active, if I turn on Wifi and then later return to mobile data the data is not active. In the status bar it just has the triangle signal icon without any indication of type of data connection (i.e. LTE, HSPA+, 3G, etc.). When I pull down the quick setting menu it does list LTE on the mobile connection quick setting button.
Additionally, MMS does not work no matter what I do. Mobile data connection or Wifi. I've researched the T-Mobile APN settings thinking this could have been the issue and no editing there changed anything.
I will likely try to restore to current factor images and begin again to see if that helps. I'll probably go get a proper Nano SIM from T-Mo today too just in case there is any issue along that front.
Anyone else experience this? Anyone else run across others having this issue? It seem separate from the 6.0.1 issues I witnessed with stock ROMs while searching but perhaps I'm wrong.
Currently installing most current stock image and then will try again. Noticed the bootloader and radio were older versions. Hopefully restarting from scratch with the newest system will solve these issues. Fingers crossed.
Boom! Working!
Restarted from scratch after flashing the most current stock ROM. All Set. Thanks for all the help!
... Spoke too soon.... Same problems are right back. I think it may be related to this workaround to stop some of the error messages:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/development/fix-build-prop-variety-fix-aka-contact-t3133347
I ran this to get rid of the error and I think that caused the problem. So I tried to re-flash only the vendor.img as I've read that as a fix to a few things and it did not help.
I'll have to start from scratch again and see if I'm right. Clearly there is something I'm doing causing this. I just can't figure out what...
AFWall+, Adaway, CM13 superuser, Privacy Guard ??? Ugh.

Sorry I did not update this sooner.
No, that is not that issue. I did end up determining that the problem is AFWall. There is, apparently, some changes in marshmellow that the developer, ukanth, needs to update AFWall to work with it more appropriately. So I've disabled AFWall for the time being.
I'm not programmer/developer, so it just seems to me to be related to this: https://github.com/ukanth/afwall/issues/520
ukanth notes in that thread this will be fixed in the next update.
I was able to get 100+mbs on LTE in a few different places, so definitely not that SIM.

You can try the 2.50 radio as well. I was getting similar issues with the latest radio on a variety of roms until I downgraded to that radio. Now I don't have any service issues at all.

Thanks for the suggestion. If AFWall isn't updated soon I'll try it out. I've noticed quite a large increase in data usage already this month without AFWall.

I did end up determining that the problem is AFWall.

You're a saviour man. Was plagued by the data connection issue since yesterday and happened to stumble upon this thread. Disabled AFWall+ and the data started working properly. Thanks a lot for the help man. :good::highfive:

I had to abandon afwall some time ago due to all of this. Now I'm running CopperheadOS, which is not rooted, so cannot use it anyway. Android 7.* has some decent settings to control permissions by app anyway, so afwall doesn't add enough for me to worry about it anymore.
