Sprint SM-N915P working Native Hotspot - Note Edge General

Through a little searching on the Note 4 threads, I found what was working for them, and simply tried it on my Edge.
-Installed the Galaxy Tools app, (not on playstore, see link below) opened app and enabled Native Hotspot.
-Rebooted, configured Native Hotspot, rebooted again.
-Started Native Hotspot, connected to PC. Initial connection took a minute, but it works great. :good:

*My device is rooted, but this may work without root with the Galaxy Tools app. Sorry- ROOT Required for this method ! But hey, Why wouldn't you root? -Thats not really a question, but some people have "reasons"...
May work on other variants according to the app developer.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand thanks again to you sir! Also donated to idone for a couple of beers. Cheers!

Excellent find but you need to be rooted for this to work. The software is so smart it tells you this when you try! Believe me, I just tried it with an unrooted Edge.

Thanks, just saw that at the VERY top of the post... So ya root required.

How did you guys get this to work? It doesn't work for me.
Neither Sqlite "add dun" nor the Galaxytools works.
My phone reboots and repprovisions itself and reactivates.
I am rooted.

Works great. A+

Hmmm... I did it last week. I don't recall there being anything special I did other than click on the "Enable Native Hotspot" button and then I clicked on "Add all Notifications Toggles" down below that in order to add the "Mobile hotspot" toggle to the Notification bar drop down.
Let us know.

1. You can't do it if you are in the area of an AirRave
2. You must have "CMDA/LTE" selected in the more mobile networks options. ---Although, once you are done and back in the area you are staying in and don't need a hotspot, choosing CDMA only get's a MUCH better signal.
Then yes, the GalaxyTools app will work.

If you select CDMA only do you still get 4G since you are not selecting LTE?

I for some reason could not get this to work. I read this thread and the other and still cant figure out why. After i select enable and reboot, when i go to turn on the tether it gives me the nag and i lose data signal and then it shuts down. I am rooted and i had cdma selected in the main menus. Any ideas?

1. placed files on micro sd

3. flashed files via twrp?

6. enjoying freeness?

Did 1-4, root confirmed with supersu and titanium backup and a few other apps that require root. Got galaxytools from the above note4 thread. Tried both methods in gtools app. Both ended up with same result. No tether. Tried both with cdma only selected in settings. Both resulted in tether starting, then immediately lose data signal, then nag about not having the tether plan, then tether closing.

Ok two questions are you doing a Profile update after you run the program? If so you are rewriting the modification and that will remove the ability to use the tether hence the statement that you don't have a data plan with tether message.
2nd Do you have a Airrave? If so you CANT USE the tether with that running, also if your towers are not running well in your area you will see the lost data connection at times, simply turn the tether on again or your local towers don't have the capacity to use the tether at this time. Which leads to the question have you used it anywhere else other then where you have tried to use it now? (i.e in a location with better towers)

looks like the sprint version is Not working dated 11/26 ?? Did you go the tmobile route? Can you explain which route you went to Root the sprint version?

I initially tried the spring method and when it didnt work i ended up flashing the tmobile version. Im guessing this tether thing doesnt work because of the towers around here. Although the sprint coverage map doesnt show it working here, i do get the spark icon at the top. I hadnt been updating profile or any of that other stuff, it just doesnt work even in cdma only. Im sure somebody will make a rom soon that will get tethering working
Thanks

Gingerbread wifi tether for root. DX

Has anyone noticed that if you try using wifi tether for root, it will enable both wifi tether for root and the built in Verizon wifi tether when you turn it on. Im stuck at work so I haven't been able to test tethering to see if it works or if it sends you to the Verizon sign up page.

P.s. I also notice that the Verizon tether app tells you to sign up at att's website. I thought that was interesting.

I can confirm that Wifi-Tethering works and does not send you to the Verizon sign up page. I'm on the Gingerbread pre-rooted.
That's good to hear. When you turn on free wifi tethering does it also turn on the built in tethering or no? Both icons pop up in my notification bar when I turn it on, I wonder if its just my phone.

I am having the same problem.
Wireless tether and 3G Hotspot Icons both in the notification bar when I turn on Wireless Tether. When connected to my Xoom and open the browser I get the VZW notification page telling me that it costs $20/month. =/
A solution would be awesome.
If not it looks like I am gonna have to SBF back. Dammit man!!!

There's an issue on the developer's google code page for Wifi Tether. From the log that's posted, it looks like one of the system calls was changed in gingerbread. (Just an observation from my limited knowledge)
I tried 3g Mobile Hotspot built-in app and my 3G icon just repeatedly disappears. After turning off Hotspot, I still don't have a connection and have to disable/enable radio to get it back or reboot.

In the log that's posted on the link I provided you see a lot of this:
Code:
getsockopt for multiport failed strangely: No such file or directory
It makes me think that something was changed in the system that causes it to start 3G Mobile Hotspot when firing up Wifi Tether. A little googling reveals this:
Code:
The getsockopt() function manipulates options associated with a socket.
So I'm guessing the appropriate sockets are not getting created or modified correctly for tethering to function properly and somehow the 3G Mobile Hotspot app is triggered. According to MDW and whatnot, the Hotspot app is supposedly prepatched but 3G drops repeatedly for me, so something is amiss. From what I can tell, 3G Mobile Hotspot is no longer an app even though it shows up in the App Drawer, if you try to remove it by dropping it on the trash on LauncherPro, it tries to remove Settings. It looks like tethering is just built in now.
I mostly understand what you are saying.
But my next question is how long til a functioning tether? Is it even possible since 3G hotspot is now built in?

Well, regardless, it doesn't work for me anyway, even with the patch.

Sprint LG G2, no tethering option, bought from best buy.

Hi. I bought my phone through best buy and noticed I don't any of the sprint apps. Ive been trying to get the native hotspot to work but the option to turn it on isnt in the menu.
I'm rooted and tried the iceroom and stock versions of native hotspot. Also I've contacted another user who had the same issue, no hotspot option, also purchased via best buy.. Which is kinda odd. Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way of fixing it?
ya know, the same thing happened w/ me.......bought the phone from best buy and was looking for a hotspot feature and lo-and-behold, theres none to be found, even enabled dev settings and didn't pop up. I'm kinda dumbfounded and i really like the stock OS coming from the galaxy s4 and was hoping there was a hidden setting for it or if theres a rom that enables it because i'd be all over that lol

Extremely odd that it hasn't been mentioned by anyone else either. I cant even use any of the other tethering apps (wifi tether, barnacle, etc etc), I recieve ad-hoc errors, which I'm assuming is the issue with the native hotspot not appearing in the menu.
Still looking for a way to fix this if anyone knows how, would greatly appreciate it.

No. The phone is rooted and Ive tried the wireless tether app, pdanet, barnacle. Every wireless app shows an ad-hoc error in the log while pdanet gives me a htc sync error 2.
Thing is theres no hotspot option in the menu. Im sure its like that for everyone who bought the phone from best buy.

My question is: Why would a carrier do that? That is an upsell that they want to extend to every smartphone purchase, it's lost revenue. That is why I'm perplexed and have placed a call to my friend (MGR for VZW).

Apparently this issue is caused by not fully finishing the activation process for Sprint. Sprint base apps install after activation... my sneaking suspicion is they are installed via the "Sprint ID" app but Im not sure. Either try doing the activation again, or more likely to work is to do a full factory reset and make sure you do not interrupt the process all the way thru activation.
You will then have your tethering options back. Its likely the reps at bestbuy are bypassing that part of the activation process by interrupting it so they can finish your sale and get you outta there faster. Might also be unintentional on their part but who knows.
Do a factory reset.
noob question... will factory reset remove root and twrp? i have both, stock rom. i already backed up via twrp. however, will i need to install everything again afterwards?
You need to do a factory reset, no It will not loose root or twrp. As soon as you the phone boots back up, update prl and profile. Make sure you are in a good data location or are hooked up on WiFi. After updating both of these your phone should install all the Sprint apps and you will have tether option in settings

As bigpappa pointed out... it's not necessarily a best buy thing. It's the fact the rep probably didn't finish the activation process when setting your phone up in store. It could have been any store... it's just coincidence that the people with the problem happen to have bought from best buy.
lol i don't doubt that but i just had to give him hell because he was essentially trying to call us out who didn't have the tethering option and "debunk" it when it was just a simple statement that it wasn't there and was curious as to why, ive never really seen that happen before w/ an incomplete activation but its not like it really matters because theres tethering mods n **** out there that enable it anyway so just had to give him a little bit of hell haha
so... i factory reset my phone and it never went thru the activation process again. when i tried to activate device in settings, it said it was already activated. i quit and just installed the cm nightlies and now have wifi tether but im curious as what the fix could be.
After activation the Sprint Zone app runs and installs all the sprint bloatware and base apps. If you didnt have sprint zone load and start installing those apps, or quit that process manually then you didnt finish full activation. If Sprint Zone failed to load after the factory reset I dont know what to tell you other than to do it again.

@scottguest11 didn't say that - he only said that FoxFi seems to work well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49558391&postcount=5
Try the app "Tether Setting" (noboru) - this relies on a bug in the VZW hotspot app where the hotspot starts running even though the nag screen about not having signed up for a paid service pops up. The trick is to not press the "cancel" button when that popup dialog appears, but to navigate away from that by pressing the Home button. (Also, this app requires few privileges compared to FoxFi)
This works for MJ7 - I don't know about MJE. If you have MJE maybe you could give it a roll and report back here.
[Edit] I just stumbled across this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2564777
while looking for something else. Kinda suggests that toggle hack won't work on pure MJE ... but there is a framework mod available. Might just be a better idea to cough up the $8 though.
I'm using Foxfi, but I've noticed that while tethering to my iPad, it seems to be able to only use one app at a time. I usually play Spotify, and it pauses anytime a notification pops up, and it also pauses if I use any other app. Not happy with it at all!
I can't seem to get it to work. Will the free foxfi work at all? I have no problem with paying the 8 but the free won't work so i don't wanna get it and it not work. I also tried noboru WiFi settings with no luck.

FoxFi works smoothly with MJE. Paid version of FoxFi.
As of the 26th Verizon blocked the app again, now the folks at foxfi have to find the way around again to make it work agai, well at least thats what im experiencing

I just tried Foxfi on my note 3 and its's still working for me. I don't like how it shows tethering when I going to settings and check on the data that I've used though. So I'm not using it anymore. Looks like I'm going to root and either install a ROM which I really don't want to do, don't want to hassle that crap. So I'll probably do the little script change or line change whatever it is that allows the hotspot to work.
Never mind my last comment, I deleted the app reinstalled and working fine again
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
Yea foxfi works on the free or paid version and it is working on MJE. the only difference in the paid and free is that the free only lasts for 30 minutes then it turns off and you just have to go restart the hotspot
Found a different app that costs less, and works without the various steps like foxfi.
Doesn't seem to have a widget, takes some time to load the app, and turn on the wifi tether, but works well.
On updated 4.3, MJE, rooted.

FOXFI fixed on latest OG5, none rooted Verizon Note4

Hi all,
After a long research and playing with different options, I finally found a way to make Foxfi work again on my Verizon Unlimitted data, none rooted, OG5 with latest update. I'm not gurantte that it will work for everyone because I only tested on my phone. So feel free to try out my method and if you blow up your device, it's your fault and your responsiblity. Once you able to bypass VZ lock down, you should able to connect normally WITHOUT have to go through all the steps. Enough said let try it out
1) Turn off your 4G, turn on your wifi.
2) Open foxfi and follow through until it failed by VZ message.."please call bahbahbah", hit cancel when you see the message
3)Switch to wifi and disconnect it from connecting to your router (open the connection then hit forget). Now your wifi is on but you shouldn't have internet
4)Close your Foxfi then reopen, then go through the process again, but at the end you will received a message that it unable to connect, hit cancel.
5) Now turn off your wifi and turn on your 4G, try to connect with foxfi and it should prompt you to enable hot spot in settings, launch settings and turn on hotspot. Bang, you should be sucess!!!
Once this is done, next time you just launch your foxfi the normal way, no need to go through these steps again.
Please provide feed back and good luck.
Well I heard that Foxfi is working again, don't know how/why?? but it's working, so no need to try anything. Thread closed.
How reliable is the paid version of FoxFi? I used it in the past on my S4 before I rooted it and it worked fine, but it was only the free version. Aside from the 500 meg-per-use limit, I had no problem. I tried it briefly a little earlier and it didn't work, but I might have missed a step. Almost forgot to mention, but after installing and running the app for the first time, a message appeared saying 'Network may be monitored'. Should I be worried about this? Thanks.

Thanks. One other question, is there a way to FoxFi without having to be stuck with the system lock screen? I like to use Zui as my lock screen, and having to use the system one I have to sign into my phone twice. Is there a setting in Security I can disable or something?
Download this app, run it and it should remove foxfi lock screen. http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk
After that you can set your own lock screen

If you try to use the built-in mobile hotspot, it'll respond by telling you to either call Verizon or visit their site to enable that feature. With FoxFi, it allows you to use the mobile hotspot without having to pay extra for the convenience of it. You open the app, start it, then tap the button that redirects you to the mobile hotspot feature built into the phone. Basically, the app bypasses the need to enable the hotspot through your carrier. The full version is only $7.95 and you have about seven days, I think, to try it out. I'd recommend installing the 'Remove Lock' app mentioned in this thread should you choose to try FoxFi, since the app requires you to set either a password or pin lock due to it creating a VPN when first used. I've been using it for a while and it works as well as any rooted Android phone with the hotspot feature enabled. Hope this helps.

Simple answer, the build in hot-spot you have to pay for Verizon data service plan. With Foxfi you pay 7$ one time fee and use it forever...

Both replies are very helpful, thanks. I was a bit confused because I have never been charged for using my built in hot spot. With that said, I have not used it for extended periods of time, streaming, etc...

So when you activate your hotspot, did you have to register with Verizon?

No, not at all. Nothing on my bill indicate useage...
Per VZW...
Here's the breakdown:
If you have a new Verizon "Share Everything" plan, you can use your phone's built-in mobile hotspot feature or a third-party tethering app free of charge? but you're limited to the data in your Share Everything data pool. Overage rates for shared data plans are $15 per gigabyte.
If you have an old usage-based data plan, you can now use a third-party tethering app free of charge. You can also use your phone's mobile hotspot feature for an additional $20 per month (per device), which also gets you an additional 2GB of data.
If you have an old unlimited plan, you are technically required to pay $20 per month for tethering? whether you're using a third-party app or your phone's mobile hotspot feature. However, Verizon has no way of knowing if you're using a third-party app to tether.

Thank you for this! It's nice and clear about Verizon policy with data Tethering. :good:
Is it still working? I'm thinking of getting a Note 4 but I need tether.

For the most part, it works without issues.
What I have discovered. Devices cant talk across it (as far as I can tell), and sometime it bugs out (every once in awhile). Overall works great.
The annoying part is damn icons in the top of your phone you cant get rid of. 2 for foxfi, 1 for hotspot.
OTA update from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1

So Verizon is pushing the OTA update from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 on my Note 4, does anyone know if this will break Fox-Fi/PDAnet?
I have no problem with foxfi... after the update....

Do you have issues with the V20? Do you have tethering in your mobile plan? Are you using it on AT&T?

Is yours an AT&T version? If so you'll have to have to have it part of your plan.

No issues with the V20 at all...Best phone I've ever had. I'm on At&t unlimited.

Yes At&t......I will need root then because I'm unlimited data....This sucks......If I want to use my data by tethering, I should be able too. This is dumb
In the same boat with Verizon on unlimited. Foxfi works, but only via USB (cable connected) or Bluetooth (slow ~1 Mbps). I love this phone, but miss being able to use the Hotspot for the rare times I need it.
I believe there is a beta feature on the pdanet USB client on the PC side that will allow a hotspot generated from the computer attached via USB. Clunky but better than nothing if you have other devices that need access to the connection in a stationary setting for now.

And this is why carriers are requesting phones to be locked down harder than Fort Knox

Its already a lot of money, why not just let us have that? Stupid imho\
Thanks for the help ..WIll use FoxFi / PDA USB with cable for now. Good looking out!!
I'm really looking forward to a solution for this. I've been holding on to my old S5 since I haven't been able to find a newer removable-battery phone that allows for rooted hotspot usage on the old grandfathered unlimited plan :/
Now that we have root, I wonder how we can enable this?
I use to just change a couple of numbers in buildProp on other phones (Rom Toolbox .prop)
Any help would be appreciated
EDIT:
Found the below info but I don't think it will work. I DID NOT try this but it is tempting.
4. Connect your phone to your PC and issue the below commands:
adb shell
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
adb reboot
5. Now, install Terminal Emulator app from the Play Store [HERE] and launch it.
6. In Terminal Emulator, enter below code one by one:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit

Yeah I'm not entirely sure how we might be able to get it to work. I've tried adding dun to the APN - edited the build.prop and added the lines you put above into the build.prop file. Those worked to no avail.
I edited the line inside build.prop "ro.build.target_operator=ATT". I changed ATT to "OPEN", and that did happen to allow tethering. But from the devices I connected to my phone - they were unable to connect to the internet. It was almost like ATT was blocking service of tethering. I didn't try to do all of those edits at the same time though. Perhaps maybe then?

Yeah I tried using all three of those methods - but it seems like only the method of turning the ro.build.target_operator to OPEN avoids the "Authorizing" screen and lets the Tethering turn on. But while the phone is still able to access the internet, the other devices cannot access the internet - having DNS issues.
I'm curious if perhaps the "system/app/Entitlementcheck-" app retrieves a token to allow other devices to connect, and using "OPEN" makes it so the entitlementcheck application is not even used. Not sure entirely how it works. I've seen in other device sections, such as the Pixel, where someone edited the phone's own entitlementcheck app equivalent to let them use tethering (here). Not sure if it would be possible to something similar here.

Wow...Sounds a little harder than it use to be. Nice digging man, sounds like your on the right trail that's for sure. I'm also sure with time someone (or you) might figure something out. Until then, I'm using PDAnet with cord. Better than nothing for the office PC

I have the US996 unlocked version my build.prop ro.build.target_operator=NAO I have hotspot so i decided to change it to ATT because im using att i wanted the att signal icon I did get the att signal icon however i noticed my tethering option was gone so i changed it back to NAO instead of ATT
I am on sprint. And i rooted my v20 phone. I am on unlimited also. But sprint gives me 5gb tether for free on my plan. Then they slow you down. The built in tether did not work after root. So i had bought a app called Wi-Fi tether router. And it works.
Re: Work around
Were you able to find a way to root the LG V20 or find a way to get around the tethering and hotspot block/ authorization??? Please Help !! I have no idea how to root but I heard there is a minor root I can do but not sure how to do it and DEF dont want to mess my phone up.... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I just did this and you solved one of my pet peeves but not my tethering issues.
The phones still connect to my phone however they have no internet while tethering.
What you did solve is (by changing the prop to NAO vs ATT) is removing the annoying carrier name on the left side of the screen and also removed the annoyingly large ATNT 4G symbol. Instead its a neatly placed, small 4glte icon.
This issue is still persisting even after changing the tether enforcement to 0 from 5 in the system xml
