Bought both and returned the nook tablet.
the NT was far too restrictive.. they lock you down into their little world.
At least with the fire I have some options
Cheaper, its amazon, oh and the boot loader isn't locked.
Instant video app.
I have other tablets with more storage and functionality, but they don't stream Amazon instant video without some stuttering.
Still haven't decided if this is enough for me to keep the tablet.

... my wife ordered it before the Nook tablet was announced. But now that both are public, I'm happier with the (fairly open) Kindle than I would be with the (locked down) Nook.
I'm an Amazon Prime member, and the ecosystem Amazon provides is much better than Barnes and Noble.
The only tablet out there that plays Netflix,Amozon VOD and stream espn3 without issues. Also like the UI. It does what I need it for with minimum of screwing around and now that I have rooted and installed market and side loaded some apps, it's perfect for my needs.
This is from a guy who has bought or used most of the tablets that has come around recently including i pad. I bought one for wife initially and ended up getting one for myself.

Mainly the build quality of the device it feels solid in hand as oppose to the flimsy feel of the nook tablet. I don't like the extra weight of having a case so the kindle fire is perfect and also the unlock bootloader.

The interface, the entire experiance. I like that amazon is truely offering a different experiance and bundled it in all in a nice package. I mean, no offence to other manufactures, but I feel like amazon really brought something to the table that is truely unique. I mean look at the vast options of honeycomb tablets, or gingerbread tablets, their all pretty much the same, they may have some skins on top, but underneath their all just the same old interface, don't get me wrong, I love android, but what amazon has done is organize everything that I do into a neat package. I can click on a section for the launcher and I am presented with specific content, I love that if I want to catch up on some shows, I can click the videos tab, or play a game click on my apps tab, and from there I can quickly access the app store, it all just makes sense to me.

Before the Nook Tablet announcement I pre-ordered the Kindle:
-Price (I even bought the cover with a $20 credit)
-All my Kindle books available out of the box, without waiting for a root or hack

guys when i went to bestbuy, netflix was laggy. it seems to be that way on the reviews i've watched too. plus, they've achieved full root with the nook. the bootloader point still stands though...what about the gig of ram, and one piece screen?
i agree daggy. but it stuttered when i tried to play with it.
and to everybody who talks about cost, if that wasn't an issue would you still stay with your kindle?
plus, it has one button. what recovery will you use? one where you press that button a certain amount of seconds to scroll up, down, etc. ? thanks

They have a touchscreen recovery in the works apparently.
Also I would never trust any test that uses internet in bestbuy. I worked there for a year and it was the worst. They didnt even have a separate network for the display equipment, so if people kept going on sites, it would crash up the sales machines and you couldn't punch in/out.
Horrors.
We had to use a verizon mifi to get any real work done.

I believe this thread is the "why you picked the Kindle over the Nook Tablet", not the "why I like to bash Kindle thread".
I will say that I have no issues playing video on my Kindle Fire. Netflix, Prime, or the conversions to MP4 I've loaded onto my device.

This Tablet Im looking at costs the same and has twice the features. Granted the processor isnt quite as strong. But wouldnt this have been a nice alternative to what I bought I think after christmas once I can save some money I might pick one of these babies up its called theKobo Vox. If anyone does pick one up as an alternative, Let me know how it runs I would like to know wether or not its worth it. I would post the link but It wont let me because I dont have that ability yet. Im working though trust me.
It has a slower processor, but it has an sd card slot. What are these other features that the Fire lacks?

How is the kobo vox better than the nook color (which at least has a small developer community)?
Don't get me wrong, I would like to see kobo/borders succeed (ie I was at some point interested in buying one of their eInk readers), but the kobo vox (like the eInk device I was interested in) was too little too late.
12 months ago the Kobo Vox might have had a chance ... now though?
Nook Tablet cant even get kexec because they have a locked and signed bootloader. Meaning no chance for custom kernels or a way to load a custom kernel on top of the standard one. The Kobo Vox has volume buttons. which is nice. easier recovery navigation/button combos

The VOX already has hardware features that the kindle and nook are both lacking. Also, it is running almost clean android so its a familiar interface we all know. Granted if this tablet survives (which I hope it does) The next logical step would be huge updates to the processor and ram in the device. while the nook and kindle both would have minor adjustments to the processor and ram and adding features that should have been included in the initial release. I do love my Kindle don't get me wrong I feel like the community here can do some great things with it but its just lacking some major features and Amazon came on a little apple-esque with it. It felt like if there was no root it was almost entirely proprietary.

It is essentially the SAME HARDWARE as the Nook COLOR!!!!!! But without a dev community.
Too little, too late.
I think the biggest advantage the Fire has over this device (and many others) is the sheer number of them on the market.
Many of the (real, lol) developers I know are getting orders for applications directed at the Fire. With the amount of market segmentation for android devices, finding a 'target' is a big deal for people.

Only way to get a nook color outside the US is importing it afaik
This is the same price (against the price charged by an importer) and you can just buy it on the high street (UK).

And the OP seems to be from Canada ... where he can get the Nook Color for $150 or less (depending on the available deals).

I personally thinking about getting the Nook HD which looks really great... but then again, the Nexus 7 has a front-facing camera. I'm still thinking about it.
Looks awesome, if you're a tinkerer. Assuming it's rootable and there are good ROMs for it. I don't think it's going to do so well with the average consumer though. B&N just doesn't have the clout to provide the best user experience. The price alone is pretty compelling though. Yes, having no camera is sad, how often do you really use it though? Plus the Nook has an SD Card slot which is so cherished by many.
I'm considering purchasing my first tablet, and I'm on the fence between the Nook HD+ and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. The biggest influencing factor for me is how much/often it gets quality ROM releases, which is impossible to predict. If I knew the Nook would get good ROMs, the price would be the deciding factor. I would jump on it instantly. Right now I'm leaning toward the Nook, and hoping the ROMs will come.
The HD+ looks great! Lets hope for an unlocked bootloader. the $269 for a 16GB model makes it a winner in the 9" category.
{I do hope that they 'll make available to European buyers this time}
Pluses for me:
1) Price - both the HD and HD+
2) Relatively light weight
3) Expandable micro-SD storage
Minuses:
1) (and a big one) proprietary connector!
2) +/- locked bootloader (probably like Nook Tablet). Not impossible to work around, just harder.
Lack of front-facing camera (on the HD+ especially) is a meh for me. Would make sense if the Nooks had a built-in Skype-style app.

New BN Tablets
A Mighty "Hooray"!!!
I actually cannot believe that my long wait for an affordable HD tablet with an 8.9 (actually 9 inch) screen is now here courtesy of BN!
Having a screen that was the size equivalent of a "trade paper (back)" has always been my goal for both reading and video purposes.
Under $300., with excellent performance stats, and with at least ICS 4.0 makes my mouth water. No camera is simply not an issue for me and with my Galaxy Nexus, tethering is a breeze for those few times when I might need cellular access.
I cannot imagine what a rooted version with JB would be like. I would want at bare minimum to have this be dual bootable, especially in light of the "potential" of the new BN video service.
Of course one needs to see some thorough reviews first but this is the first unit to meet all of my internalized criteria to move me off of my original and rooted (dual boot) NC. Hardware "dreams" can all too frequently become major disappointments!
I am currently running both 1.4.2 and CM 7.2 with both dual booted from the internal eMMc. I do almost all of my book reading with it. It is a tolerable form to use (size wise) in terms of my personal reading experience (also video). Have never liked it for magazine viewing or browsing.
9.7-10.1 have always been larger than I wanted to tote around and this new HD+ now has nailed my personal "sweetspot"!
Looking forward to seeing how it performs in the real world and how quickly it can be rooted and modified.
I was just getting ready to step up tot he table when I saw the emails today.
Now I just don't know, I think I will wait and see if it can be rooted. I use my Kindle app way too often
to not have it anymore. My rooted Nook Color will have to suffice, I'm sure that the devs will get on this one soon!

How hard is it to add a Microphone (for Skype, Free Phone Calls, Voice Search etc)?

B&N claims the proprietary connector lets the tablet charge faster, if that eases your conscience. But we all know it's just a way to get people to spend on accessories.
my only qualms is the lack of a camera....
if they are truly trying to target Amazon and try to compete they need to include a Camera on the tablet at least....not necessarily the HD but c'mon...9" tab without a camera....a lot of people won't buy it simple because of that...i'm not one of those people but it still will deter customers...
other than that...price and looks and specs are all top notch imo and if i do upgrade to a bigger tablet i will probably go with the HD+

The only positive of this one is that the previous super-duper multipin connector broke so easily that heck, I'm happy to try another type of connector if it actually might not break off after a few weeks of use.
Overall though...if the boot loader can be cracked (presuming there is one, which I suspect there will be since B&N just doesn't get they'd be a lot better off incentivizing people to buy product rather than attempting to force them to when they just don't have the inventory to compete) $299 for a 32 GB 256 DPI is somewhat ridiculous. Glad I haven't bitten on the Nexus 7, and we'll have to see how the big Kindle with the small data plan looks, but B&N may have just done it again on the performance/price point game even if this is never going to appeal to the plug it in and turn it on market.
What's a chance of this thing getting a CM10? I want a good high res 9inch android tablet with sd slot for a while now. Well I would prefer SDXC over microSD though. If this one have lock bootloader, then what can we expect? Decrapified ICS maybe?

Many sources I found are saying that they do indeed have bluetooth.
Unless you had developers mad scrambling to code up a new locked bootloader, I would assume the new nook tablet HD will come with the same bootloader as the one on the nook tablet that is already out now, which has the bootloader already cracked. If that is the case then it would be ready for customizing with a custom firmware as soon as it is released.
From the way some of the developers are working away with the cyanoboot app for the nook tablet I would assume the new nook tablet HD will come with the same bootloader, their has been lots of activity up in the nook tablet XDA forums recently with that app.
I am seriously thinking of getting the new nook tablet HD when it comes out here in a few months just for the hardware specs.

I'm guessing u-boot (the bootloader) on the Nook HD will be locked down, just as the NT was, and that they will have made bauwks' hack impossible. I think the security tends to improve (from their point of view) with each iteration, so I assume bauwks' bootloader bug-fix will have been undone.
I happen to believe the N7 is a far, FAR superior tablet option for just about everyone. IMO, the Nook and KFire are a bit like selling you a sports car with the tires removed and brake pedal welded down and marketing it as a four seat, five-speaker CD-player (that only plays BN and Amazon CDs). And Amazon's "radio" plays ads when you turn it on.
This is the reason I've never bought (indeed, never used) a NookTablet, and have no intention of buying or using a locked KFire either. I find the artificial restriction to use the product to its full capability to be extremely condescending and cynical to the customer. And I see the locked bootloader as a major design flaw. Yes, Amazon and BN need have to have a business model to make money, and I support their right to do so. But notice that Google actually trusts its customers -- even encourages them-- to experiment and push the boundries of what they think you can do with YOUR computer that you bought with YOUR money. It's almost like Google actually believe in themselves as a company... trusting that they have a good software experience and content offerings that beat the competition. And they may be right. Because, it's funny-- with all the hackers out there, I haven't yet heard of any N7 (or any device) owner who elected to "close down" their tablets with an effort to try to run BN's or Amazon's OS so they can experience the fully-limited, tightly-controlled e-book experience.
Anyway, the above is just my opinion at the moment. Who knows, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and the Nook HDs will be unlocked... but I doubt it.

Well spoken. The only thing that holds me back from getting a Nexus though is the limited storage space. But others might not be so picky on storage. I just love the additional storage space on the nook series and that they give you that microSD slot. 64 GB storage on top of the 8 GB on the nook color I have right now.
I am the kind of kid that needs at least 100 full music albums and 20 or so more movies on the go, and riding on the school bus does not supply wifi for that cloud of theirs. Yet I know I am the minority. Give me moar storage, lol. I know lots of others living in rural areas and/or traveling in parts of the world not covered by wi-fi also find that extra storage given by the included microSD card slot is a must have. And that is TONS of people.

So nexus 7 is also trying to shut out a part of their business to others by limiting storage on their top devices, and not including an internal storage slot. I am sure they know that or they would of released a device to include more additional storage for others.

You are right on that locked boot-loader, did not think of that. I am sure they will submit a patch on that locked boot-loader to defeat that hack. Such a shame. There might be some tablet being developed right now by Google that will give others the option to add storage and the newest android builds, I just do not understand why its taking so long or if they are deliberately holding back on releasing such of a device to force others into "cloud" use. I am sure it does not cost that much to implement that hardware on a device, I would buy it even at a few dollars more.

Yes, it will have Bluetooth. Here is a specs list straight from B&N, LINK, section 1.2 - 1.5 is all most people will care about.

I believe it's the 2nd one. Google purposely trying to force customer to use cloud storage. The problem here is that we also have greedy telecom on the other side that will nickle and dime your for every GB if they could and they have no incentive to improve their network capacity & coverage. We also have a weak FCC that don't do much. FCC should have done away with itself license spectrum and force the telecom to be a dumb pipe and every one just be like MVNO. That way we end up w/ more competitive market rather than oligopoly market. Sure if we have affordable unlimited LTE everywhere right now, then cloud storage make a lot of sense. And that if we aren't gonna saturate the bandwidth. Imagine even if everyone pulling movies and music over the LTE network in metropolitan area, the network would suck so hard that everyone will be pulling less than 1mbps. I don't think Google will have a new tablet anytime soon or w/ removable storage for that matter. Not until google realize that they are fighting with the wireless telecom and they have to be a telecom themself.

HIGHLY doubtful! they'll update the bootloader just like they did with the tablet, and, if you think otherwise, no offense, don't kid yourself
also... nook tablet has been out for almost a year and STILL only has nightlies (let alone a beta). again, no offense, but i'm seriously losing hope of EVER seeing a final version of cm10 (with a working 3.0 kernel (let alone bluetooth, mic, hw video accelleration) :\

Only for 2014 Fire HD tablets, unless you happen to have a 5.0 Fire TV image that isn't available on the Amazon developer preview page.

This is an extremely long way off for the Fire TV. Look at it like this, the Fire Tabets have been running KitKat for 8 months while the Fire TV is running Jellybean, so if it has been this long and the Fire TV still has not been upgraded to KitKat, how long do you think it will take to upgrade the Fire TV to Lollipop after the Fire Tablets gets upgraded to it? I'll answer for you, around a year after the Fire Tablet gets Fire OS 5 the Fire TV will get it. Now there is probably gonna be people that hate that I say that, but they are still runnning Jellybean while the Fire Tabet is running Kitkat so that should tell em that Fire OS 5 is a long tme away for the Fire TV.
To be honest, right now I would settle for Android 4.4 on my Fire TV, cause I would love to use all my apps again. Several apps that I use now require Android 4.4 so it woud be nice for Amazon to upgrade the Fire TV to Android 4.4. Whats the holdup Amazon, we need Android 4..4. Don't treat the Fire TV like a hobby.

You don't know that,
Very possible that the FireTV will get FireOS 5 this year....as Android5 makes a lot of sense for a media center device.

I agree its a good possibility and choices companies made in the past is not always a clear indication they'll stay consistent. When the kindle fire hd came out for most consumers (not necessarily xda members) you had fewer choices for tablets--pay a lot for a high end iPad or galaxy OR get a nice midranges device like kfhd for considerably cheaper (or buy a really crappy generic running android). Not real competition.
For settop boxes it was even worse. But of course all of that's changed and now the bar has been raised forcing apple, and maybe soon roku, to come up with something better. I also wouldn't think it logical that we'll get kk before lollipop. I have a macbook from 2010 that didn't get the mountain lion update but since then has gotten mavericks and then Yosemite. I realize it might not be exactly the same but just a thought that its not unprecedented for a company to do that.

Yes it could get it this year, but using the past as an indicator its not likely. Android in general makes a lot of sense to use as a media center, but the Fire TV is not a media center in Amazons eyes. Not one time has Amazon described it as a media center or even used the words media center anywhere when describimg the Fire TV. We can use it as a media center, but the Fire TV has many uses. Just because you see Android 5.0 as a better version to use as a media center does not mean Amazon is going to rush it to us. Android 4.4 would aslo be better for the Fire TV, but Amazon has not even gave us that yet. Don't get mad just because you can't face facts. It is extremy clear that Amazon sets a pecking order for their devices and the Fire TV is at the bottom of the pecking order in terms of upgrades. Fire Tablet, running KitKat for 8 months, Fire Phone, running KitKat for 2 months, Fire TV, still stuck with Jellybean. That should tell you something. Look at how many updates we have gotten for the Fire TV and not one time has Amazon mentioned upgrading to KitKat, but they did release statemnts saying when KitKat was coming to the Fire Tablet and Fire Phone, which was vague, but they still released statements saying KitKat was coming to those devices. Amazon has been beyond great at giving us firmware updates for the Fire TV, but not so great when it comes to Android verson upgrades.
Based on the fire TV still running Android 4.2.2 it is not likely that it will be running Android 5.0 by the end of this year. Do you not realize that the Fire Tablet has been running KitKat for 8 months and Amazon still has not even upgraded the Fire TV to KitKat? Not only that, but Amazon released a statement saying in September of last year saying the Fire Phone would be getting KitKat early 2015 and it did not come for another 7 months. Like a wise man once said, if you wanna know whats going to happen in the future look at the past. Companies are creatures of habit just like peeople are, and you should always look at hhow they done things in th past to predict the future. I would love to be wrong about this, but based on the Fire TV not even being upgraded to Android 4.4 yet I do not see them giving us Android 5.0 anytime soon.

Good points. The Fire TV is overdue an update., and they were smart to go straight to L rather than waste time on K. I also agree now that M is starting to doing the rounds, and given that L seems to be more like Lemon than Lollipop, it would be even smarter to skip it as well.

I always tell people (outside of xda) that if you truly seek honesty in the media, you should read the business press. Sometimes it feels like they have their own secret club and its funny. The vast majority of americans dont look there even when they have a personal interest in the subject. My point is you might do well to study history as a means to predict whats coming. But a lot of history is well hidden. Its a very open society in terms of information available but finding that info really is a discipline that needs to be practiced.

How did Kodi and piracy get brought into this?
Going to Android 5 makes a lot of sense for the Fire TV. For that matter, going to an Amazon'd version of Android TV makes a lot of sense. Let FTV take advantage of all the AndroidTV updates, lean-back compatible apps, live tv features...
Don't forget hopefully adding the latest Qualcomm drivers for fixing a large number of issues seen in the current ancient [email protected] ones on FireTV.
Applying the latest drivers ([email protected] or [email protected]/95) would cause a massive performance boost,killing all of the lag an many instances.
I am curious how Goat Simulator would run on the latest drivers.
It runs surprisingly well already considering how old the drivers are.

Making an argument/speculating as to how a company decides whether to upgrade the os is what i was attempting. If we dont do that (or something along those lines) Im not really sure where this thread goes, other than "well i hope we get lollipop." And "yeah me too."
The kodi/piracy thing was just a little insight on the thought pattern, or lack there of, of a large business. As many of you know, these meetings are done privately and so are the decisions. To me it fits, but i really have no desire to turn this into yet another war of a ridiculous amount of words so i respect your request. And will stop.
Sorry for the admittedly long post. I dont think it was as off topic as some people believe but it could've been more concise. Also, maybe not appropriate post for a tech website.

Yes. Because if youre "informed" you know hes such an enemy of large companies, such as amazon, that his political rivals agree (probably for the 1st time) he should be given fast track authority for reasons i vaguely referenced in my prior posts.
I wont preach or resort to name calling (which if you really knew me youd know id consider your last comment to be just that.)

One of the reasons i liked xda was because it was almost completely non-political. But for the past year ive listened to users complain about amazon's "controlled ecosystem". I guess i didnt think it was inappropriate to examine the root causes just a tiny bit. I was wrong. And to be honest Im happy to be wrong.

Yeah. Sorry man. It was a knee jerk reaction and once again off topic. And i actually thought about it afterwards that you didnt even quote me so...yeah. What can i say but i need to lighten up and lay off the caffeine. My apologies to @captainjapan.
Since we are already waaay of topic, let me bring it semi-sorta-kinda back on topic. Any good comparisons to the other AndroidTV L based players? Things that Nexus/Razer/nVidia boxes do that FireTV has issues with but would be helped by going to Android 5? App compatibility for sure, but what else? Any clue if going to L really means going to AndroidTV under the covers?
My fire TV is rooted on an ancient firmware but bootloader locked and I'm very pleased with performance and stuff with what I do with it. I use apps for USB support, I use kodi which works wonderfully well and I use live TV apps that are excellent.
What are advantages of android TV over the current amazonified jellybean? To you people?

Got a brand new fire hd10 9th gen has the software it shipped with I didn’t do the OTA. Using fire toolbox that I got from xda thanks! I made all the mods I could and got play store set etc. got apps downloaded no big deal.
My problem is specific and strange to me. The app Jurassic world alive is important to the person this gift is for and google play states the app is incompatible with the device.
So I figured ok just side load no big deal I have a good apk of it from a good site and any time I attempt to side load it gets 3/4 through the install bar and abruptly changes to app not installed. No error message or anything else. Any ideas since I can’t root this and change the build prop to download it from the play store.

Hi - I got this device and then found out its only 32bit userspace - so 64bit cpu and kernel but essentially the OS is 32 bit - So some apps wont work - I guess I should have done more research - I wanted to use it for dolphin emulator but that's a no go for this reason - and also not hackable to put a custom rom on yet

Yea I got annoyed with it and found that none of the rootable fires were on sale so I’m returning it and went to buy a Lenovo m8 tablet instead since it was on sale for pretty much the same price and is true android plus I didn’t realize how much I wouldn’t like the 10 inch form factor

Understand - Think I will keep mine - I was also looking at Lenovo and Huawei 8" and 10" formats - Have a Ipega 9083s controller so i could do some retro gaming - PPSSPP works great for PSP games and is fast, also Call of Duty mobile plays fab at medium quality - so is a good fast tablet, just a shame that its not fully 64bit, or hackable (yet
£89 quid isn't a bad price after all for a 10" Octa-core tablet with full HD screen - especially after using Fire toolbox to remove all the amazon stuff - Steam Link/Xbox Game pass etc all work great.
I also have a Linx Windows 10 10" tablet from a few years ago - that i got Android 11 on thanks to the Bliss-OS guys - that was an Atom 64bit processor on a mainboard with a 32 bit bios which meant Windows 32 bit so this mish-mash of tech isn't anything new
