[Q] Christmas Present for 5 boys?

I am looking for a tab(like) device for a christmas present for each of my boys. We travel a lot to family and they are used to playing their DSs and PSPs but would the KF be a solid replacement (emulators...)? Battery life/durability/price and fuctionality will be the deciding factor. They enjoy games (birds and such) on my phone and using my phone as a wifi HS in the car, it makes sence not to spend the extra money for a 3G tab.
If the KF is not the answer would a NC(rooted) be a more acceptable item?

Why would you want to replace the PSPs and DSs? Are the boys unhappy with them? Both devices have a solid backing.
In general, I think the Fire would probably work out ok, especially since you do a buy-once-share-to-all on apps, books, and music (I'm assuming each boy gets his own).

get them the new ps vita (new psp) that's coming out for the holidays.

Two use their DSi(s) and the PSP has gone by the wayside. I am pushing the tab issue due to is versitility (apps/learning/games/music/video). I dont feel they are ready for their own laptop. Ages are 12,11,10,9,7 .... 3 and 5 months but the later two are not considered in the equation, unless someone pops up with a water proof model.
I have been looking at the NC, I dont have an issue rooting it and making it more versitile.

The Fire wouldn't be a bad way to go for what you want, but myself, I would go ahead with the laptop instead. Snag a couple of older models for $100 or so off Craigslist, let them get the hang of things on before handing them something nicer.

My 2 year old daughter loves the Nook Color and iPad. On the iPad she can wake it, unlock it, swipe to the page she wants and launch apps. I suspect the fire will be just as easy. the Nook Color takes more work to make it toddler friendly. But your kids are old enough that either the NC or Fire would be easy to pick up. I personally would pick the Fire over the Color if I had to pick. The experience isn't as smooth as I hope it will be on the Fire. I would guess because it's essentially a hacked together piece of kit and a slower processor.

I think you'll have an easier time deciding when all the reviews come out.
But I can tell you that my nephews absolutely love the rooted nook color they have and the Kindle Fire will almost certainly be better.

For your kids? I'd wait and read User Reviews and not the Professionals once the device is out for a while.
A lot of semi-negative info is floating around on "scalability" and what it can or cannot do (the AF, that is).
Kids get bored quickly and a device (any device) that one cannot modify, add to or otherwise personalize may or may not be a good long term solution.

FYI: Nook Color refurb for $149 at Buy.com
They're not really refurb, they're new units with full 1-yr warranty from B&N. They're labeled that way presumably to clear inventory w/o impacting the official price.
I've gotten 3 refurbs from various discount vendors, and they've always been new. Since I open up my electronics to tinker, it's easy to tell when a device is new as vs been serviced.

The good thing about the NC over the KF is that it's already supported by CM, and when ICS drops, it'll be one of the first to get it.

I just bought 3 of these (after buying one,) for my boys - 11, 9, and 8.
These are really ideal for kids, especially since you can easily limit their access to stuff if you choose to.
If you know how to hack these, then they are REALLY ideal. You can remove the Silk Browser (or, move it somewhere where it can't easily be found.)
They DO NOT have access to the Google Market - Good THING!
By disabling one-click, you can allow them to download free apps, but not spend any money - IDEAL.
You can setup e-mail on them pretty easily.
They can watch Netflix, Hulu (watch out for age appropriate content - Hulu doesn't limit this as yet,) or even certain shows on Amazon, if you have Prime.
They can read eBooks from the Amazon store, or check out eBooks from the local library.
Kids aren't usually as picky about interfaces. The Bookshelf Launcher is perfect for them.

Cheapy tablet wars, your opinion!

Looking for a tab for my wife. Not only does she get a gift, but I get something to tinker with =)
There's a nook tablet in the trunk of my car. The hardware specs were better, and with the nook color's history, well...I leaped before I looked. The bootloader lockdown makes me a sad panda.
See, I dont want a weaksauce e-reader. I want a tablet! So, with a KF, I can put CM 7 on it (is that a honeycomb build?) and I'll basically have an acceptable tablet experience.
Should I return the nook? Does CM7 run stably on this thing? Are the hardware limitations (esp the lack of sd card port) really that restricting? Should I perhaps buy an actual tablet like a galaxy tab or a xoom?
I appreciate your input!

This sounds like getting her a shirt in your size and style for Christmas, not much of a gift imo.
Get her something SHE wants, not something YOU want.
(that said, I really like my Kindle Fire. I have not rooted as I actually like the amazon interface and it does everything I want it to do by sideloading apps off of my phone through dropbox. Read all of the issues people are having after rooting or messing with this or that before you get crazy with her device)

Rooting itself is trivial...
I got one of these for my wife.... She had a real hard time using it, not because there was Any issues with the unit, actually it did everything she wanted... The trouble was when she wanted to use it, she had to pry it out of my hands.
I got my own.
While I didn't root her's before I did it on mine, that was more because she didn't need anything other than what it came with. And I wanted to make sure I was not going to mess something up.
So I did all the experimenting on mine, and after doing that, I had no issues with rooting hers to add some "extras". She just keeps it in unroot mode to do all her stuff and stays in the default UI that comes with the Kindle Fire.
At $199 (actually I got mine for $123), it is hard to justify not just getting your own and let her have the present you provided.
I think it is a way cool device... and play with (my own) all the time. She uses her's daily for ebooks, videos, netflix etc..

+1 don't buy her toys for yourself.
I got my wife a Nook Color a few months back that she uses daily. She'd call out a hit on me if I so much as thought of rooting it. I think it's still on 1.3 firmware, but I'm not going near it to find out.

I see what you guys are saying, but it's not what you think. A lot of her family members have gotten ipads, and she wouldn't mind getting a tablet too. We mutually agreed that 500 was too much, and well, I dont subscribe to the maccult.
She always steals my phone to play games on. I have a thunderbolt, and she has an iphone 4. She once made mention that if she could get her favorite games from my phone on a tablet of her own...well, now that would be something.
Since an N64 emulator capable of playing Mario 64 (one of the allures of my phone for her) isn't included off the bat, I'm merely saying I'll enjoy doing the needed mods to this thing.
At 200 or 250 a pop, the price is right, no?

Sideloading is enabled by default on the Fire, so you could load emulators and whatever off-market apps you like without much effort.

Definitely get the KF over the NT if you plan on toying around with it. The Fire's development has picked up in the past few days and I'm sure we'll see a fully working ROM (hopefully CM9) very soon.
I personally have an Acer A100, but got one of my less tech inclined friends to buy a Fire and let me tinker with it until I'm satisfied, then I'll turn it over. So I can definitely relate to the allure of toying around with someone else's devices.

Root it, install Go Launcher EX, install Android market, install Dolphin browser, install Swype, then unroot.
Configure go launcher ex to your taste, then make it the default desktop. Make Dolphin the default browser.
You now have a tablet with the best of both worlds, as you can access all of the Amazon content, including prime videos.

As a previously very happy Nook Color owner, I was hoping that the NT would get hacked, but that effort seems to have stalled and all the devs are jumping on the NT bandwagon.
Even if the NT gets hacked in 1-2 months, all the devs seem to be getting Kindle Fires now ... and I know from experience that ROM development with only 1-2 devs is not pretty (especially if they eventually lose interest in your device).

I would also get a kindle fire over a nook just because there will be ;ore developpers dedicated to the device. Although, look around the web, HP is going to sell a few touchpads for 99$ on ebay Friday, so you might check it out.

Advantages of Kindle Fire over the HTC Evo View?

HTC Evo View is available for $220, so for $20 extra, you get:
Standard Android OS, and Snapdragon (vs. forked Android and custom PowerVR) for far greater compatibility with apps in Market
GPS, Bluetooth, microphone, camera, hardware buttons
32GB internal storage with microSD expansion

*I don't know if you can compare clock speed directly with different architectures (Snapdragon vs. PowerVR), so take that clockspeed comparison with a grain of salt.

I have both and the View destroys the Fire. I haven't used the Fire in a week now since getting my view. HTC Sense makes a world of difference on this thing, its really nice. Don't discount the cpu either just because it is single core, it is really fast.
If you havea choice, get the View.

I have the Flyer (basically wifi only version of View) and a Fire. The only advantage of a the Fire over the View, in my opinion, is the Amazon video app. I put the amazon app on my Flyer and video stutters. However, I can watch Amazon video in Dolphin browser.
Also, not a lot of development on View at this time (more dev on Flyer). With low prices on View, more devs may get involved. I'm not a dev, but I ordered a View yesterday and will probably keep my Flyer as a backup.
If I had to choose between Fire and View, I would get the View.

Do believe that is why it is so cheap.

I just bought the view. For the price point right now I think its a good way to go. I have played with my fathers fire and Im glad I chose the view. We bought a couple more view over the fire for both of my sister's christmas gifts. I can't seem to get Amazon instant video to play through the browser though. It looks like it buffers the fails. Any thoughts? (post written from my view.)

Amazon instant video works best for me using dolphin hd browser on my Flyer.

Interesting comparison. Couple of questions:
1. How's Bens Outlet? Reputable?
2. Will View be able to be upgraded to ICS?
Right now I have KF and while I like it, the lack of physical buttons and memory are not great. I think that ICS will fix button issue, but memory is still a concern long term. If upgrade path to ICS on View is feasible, I would consider it.

KF owner right now but thinking of getting one after Christmas to see it goes down to $200. I think the Evo View is a better deal. GPS, Cameras, far more memory, and Honeycomb on it's way (hopefully), plus the optional 4G is much more for only $20 and if you wait it may go down to $200. either way, Evo View sounds better.

i don't know, i'd still get the kindle fire just because it's going to get a lot more developer support.
the view is discontinued and it's single cored, i'm not sure on the dev-scene for it but i know it has honeycomb ports.
EDIT: not ports, i mean actual leaked builds of honeycomb from HTC
but a lot of people are working on ICS for the fire which is going to be awesome.
however, the view has the pen feature so if youre going to do a lot of writing you should get that. but also HTC sense tends to slow down and youre going to be on a single core as well so it really depends what you're going to do with it.
i'd still just get the kindle fire.

Htc slashed prices for Flyer in India to a lot less and even I was in dilemma to whether go for it or buy fire which I had to get shipped from US.
But with all the development here and seeing Fire is a new device with dual core processor, I bought Fire. Still to get it though, one more week.

It may not be officially supported but it's possible with Revolutionary. I literally just did mine like 10 minutes ago.
Basically development & some of the Amazon features are the only real advantages to the Kindle Fire, IMO.
I've played with the KF a few times & it seemed pretty good aside from the lack of buttons. I kept finding myself 'stuck' with no visible way to get back to the main menu. I was still ready to buy one until I found out it has no bluetooth & no sd slot. Those are dealbreakers for me. I shopped around more & decided on the Flyer but everywhere was sold out of that. I finally ended up with the View today & after having played with it all day, I definitely made the right choice. You just get so much more with the View. The KF is still more ereader than tablet, despite how they market it. The only things I don't like about the View are Sense(the first thing I installed was ADW), lack of a camera flash, Sprint's craptastic 3g, longish boot times, and the lack of a search button. All pretty minor things, IMO, when you look at everything else it offers. I was initially concerned about it being only a single core, but it is 1.5ghz & it's plenty fast. Easily one of the zippiest tablets I've ever used. Lack of development is a bit of a downer, but I'm happy with just being rooted.
And the pen just rocks. It may be a gimmick, but I love it. I use it all the time

2. I doubt it will get official ICS, maybe from dev community, but I wouldn't count on it.

Where are you guys getting the info that the View and Flyer is discontinued? It's still on HTC's main site (as their only 7" tablet), and Google search shows that tis only a rumor, based off of Best Buy not listing it on their site anymore.
HTC did promise Honeycomb on the View/Flyer, and ICS for HTC Evo series of phones; maybe HTC Evo View might be included in the latter.

Other that a few video apps pretty much nothing takes advantage of dual core processors on Android. The View (and Flyer) are noticeably faster than my Fire. The screen isn't as nice but it's still a good screen not one of those cheaper ones that only look good from one location. Add in 4x the memory, a GPS, SDHC card slot, real buttons and so on. If you want a great ereader that can play some games and run some apps get the Fire. If you want an Android tablet get the View or even the Flyer.

You can still return the Amazon Fire for full price (minus shipping*) 'till January 31st 2012.
I plan to, after my View comes in the mail.
*Buyer's remorse is covered at 100% minus shipping; you could lie and brick the device and say its broken for 100% recovery (including recovery shipping), if you so desire .

Thanks! That's a cool browser and I'll probably continue to use it. However I still can't get Amazon instant video to play through either Dolphin or the stock browser on my view at the moment. I'm surprised there isn't an app for it yet. Anyone else able to play Amazon instant video on the HTC evo view?
Also I was under the impression there was a micro hdmi out when I bought this but no big deal for me. Has everything else!

[Q] Kindle vs Note -

Just picked up a used i9100 for the wife here. Then I noticed the Note. I thought I probably should have given her my i(100 and purchased a note since I am a gadget freak and my eyes are not what they used. She wanted to buy me a Kindle Fire for Christmas but I really did not think I would use it as I already have the i9100 and could not see the benefit other than a limited product with a larger screen. Been following these development threads though to see what capabilities are being developed.
The question is. Why would not people buy the Note and have the best of all worlds? Other than the financial reasons of course. Do people carry this around with their Android phones?
Is the Fire able to be turned into a full fledged Captivate type product without the communications of course?

My phone is not a tablet. I take it with me everywhere (My wife thinks it is perm attached to me). I don't take a tablet with me everywhere.
I use my tablet for things that I don't use my phone for because it has a larger screen.
I many times use my phone and tablet at the same time (support calls). This is harder to do with just one device without accidently hanging up or having the battery bomb on you.
As for WiFi, I would only buy a WiFi enabled device rather than a 3g device because I already have a paid 4G hotspot. Makes no sense to purchase another data plan for every device I need network access for when I can share the one device.
I prefer this over tethering to my phone because 1) It is faster, my phone only has 3G now 2) It doesn't affect my phones battery which lets me use it longer 3) It has its own separate data plan I can keep track of.

They are two completely different devices. Use each for a differrent task.

I'm running CM7 on my kindle fire, so now it looks and feels nothing like it did out of the box. I have the kindle app on it for books, so I did not lose that functionality. I gained a ton more by putting a custom ROM on it.
Basically the kindle fire is an Android tablet waiting for someone to free it once it gets a home.

Agreeing here 100%. There are things I use a phone for (calls, texts, quick searches, facebook/reddit mail) and then there are things I use a tablet for (books, longer internet reads, articles) and then there are things that I use a notebook for (games, work, typing). I'm a firm believer in the "right tool for the right job" methodology, and the Kindle Fire does everything between the phone and the notebook.
Can't beat $200 for something that does everything I need it to in order to fill the space in between!

Would you recommend Kindle Fire for a first Tablet?

So I am wanting to purchase my first tablet. I so far am very impressed with the dev society for the KF. I haven't done alot of digging but the Roms look very impressive. Also haveing cwm and that other recovery is great. One big thing, after rooting can you do anything with the KF that you can with most other tablets? Does it do Flash? I assume that once you get google play on there that you can put on all of your bought apps and such. I am pretty excited but want to get a good tablet for the whole family. Thanks so much.

Dude u should wait for the nexus tablet or the Asus memo those are both 200 and 250 and have more to offer than the kindle. Either way u can't go wrong I love my kindle fire

Yes after rooting u could do whatever, so far flash is supported on stock, cm7 and 2.3 roms , and soon to be stable with cm9 and 4.0 roms. Google play is working perfectly too but some gameloft games don't work

You can't go wrong with a kindle fire. First and foremost it's an E-reader then a tablet in my opinion (which is not meant to take anything away from the device) . The Kindle reading app blows any other reading app out of the water. Add that onto all the hard work the devs have put in and you have a huge array of different add ons and directions you can go with your Fire. Plus amazon customer support I have found to be awesome. I had a problem with my unit charging, i called them on a saturday and I had my new kindle on monday. I'm guessing we might see a reduction in cost in the next few months as amazon is likely to announce their new line of e-reader/tablet.

Since each individual case is not the same. It is important to weigh the pros and cons yourself. If you are willing to ignore the cons then it's an easy choice.
Pros: Android (read: customizability), price, customer support, Amazon catalogue, XDA community support (a huge consideration for me), etc.
Cons: KF has no mic or camera or memory card slot and has only 512mb RAM.
So if you don't care about the cons or can live without them then, at this price point, it is a no-brainer.
Personally, I whole-heartedly recommend it!

If you want a cheap tablet that you can make not so cheap, then yes. But you'll have to do a little work, and it's not for the faint at heart.
If you want a good tablet straight out of the box, you'd be better off going with something else. Stock Kindle Fire OS is buggy and kind of annoying. And it's nearly impossible to customize.

I agree with all the other posters above me.
The KF is VERY easily rooted, which opens up both great opportunities for modding and an unfortunate can of worms for idiots who jump in headfirst without understanding what they're doing.
At this point if you were interested I'd just buy it used. That and read up on the rooting process, what a bootloader/recovery is, AND HOW TO CONTROL THEM VIA ADB/FASTBOOT. You can see the # of "bricked" threads, which are purely from the lack of understanding the above.

I agree with all those who have already posted, I would just caution you that if your looking for a tablet that you can root and then flash and jump into a stable custom rom the Kindle Fire isn't there yet, it's almost there but not completely. Hashcode just pushed out his new 3.0 kernel and it is almost perfect but has some issues. If you're looking for a tablet that your willing to work with and possibly reflash daily then go for the Kindle Fire, it's a great tablet to learn with since it's being heavily developed right now, however if you want more stability i'd wait for the google tab or go with an older tablet.

I, as everybody else, am also eagerly waiting for ICS - but saying there are no stable ROMs is incorrect. I'm running CM7 since ages with zero issues on two KFs.

Yup, and it's way more fun since ditching the Amazon software for ICS ROMs.

I like the Fire so much I just bought another one for a family member. About to flash ICS and hopefully never go back to stock.

Thankyou to everyone who posted. I do see the kindle fire as a good solid option and I love the dev community you guys have built here. I really think you guys have somthing special going on here. However I think I may be tempted by the Nook Tablet. After you root it and repartition the Hard Drive. You have way more space than the kf. The Nook also has an SD slot. The display is a little better as well. IT also has a gig of memory vs the KF 512. So I think ima go with it. I tell ya this though I sure would have enjoyed the society here. You guys seem to be top notch. THANKS FOR YALLS HELP

If youplan on rooting go with the fire if not get the galaxy's tab. I on my kf right now by the way and it has built in flash that works great!

Nook Color better, IMO, than Kindle Fire.
I'd recommend the Nook Color over the Kindle Fire. The main difference, aside from the fact that it's a bit cheaper, is that it has an SDcard slot that not only provides up to 32GB of extra space, but allows you to boot from ROMs on the card without altering the Nook itself. This also makes it a lot harder to brick, or easier to unbrick, than the Fire. You can, of course, put ROMs on the internal memory, just as you can with the Fire. Look at the Nook Color forum on this site for more info.
The Nook Tablet is another matter. I don't know much about it, but I understand that B&N has made it a lot harder to hack than the Nook Color, You can check the forum for the Nook Tablet here on xda to see how much success devs have had so far with overcoming its protections.

nook color.is.nothing in front of kindle.fire.and nook tablet is same like kindle.fire but with sd card slot and cheap build quality i have used both and kindle is like solid metal and nook tablet is like cheap plastic
now kernel 3.0 is supporting otg and u can connect usb drives and hard drives with it
so go for kindle fire u will not regret
