[Q] Softbricked S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have an AT&T S4, with MF3 (I think). After installing safestrap successfully, I couldn't install a custom ROM so I kinda gave up and tried to flash it back to stock. I went all over the xda forums, and I attempted to flash about 3-4 stock ROMS using Odin, but none of them work; I always get the error message: <ID:0/005> FAIL! (Auth)
I attempted to flash the MFR.tar file at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413746 and got the same FAIL! message from Odin.
Can anyone please help me?

Check my thread. ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573080 u can go back to stock MF3 using Odin with MF3.tar files.....and then if u decide to update to MK2 follow second post for guide. .... If u ever brick from MK2 follow third post to unbricked from gtj0 guide method that I edited and replace with MF3> MK2 update. Zip files from first post (OP).... goodluck. ..... Hope this help.. ... If I helped u ..... Hit Thank button. ...

I really appreciate your response! You're the only one who's reached out to me (in my desperate hour of need) and I'm thankful!
I checked your thread, downloaded Odin and MF3.tar files. I tried to flash the MF3 files onto my phone using Odin, but got the following error:

As you can see, I'm still having that weird FAIL error. Any ideas what to do?

I went to Best Buy, and they said that it was permanently bricked. I feel so stupid. Anywhere I can sell a bricked phone?
Someone also suggested I install a custom recovery, but since it's bootlocked, I have no idea how to. Is it possible to install a custom recovery on an AT&T phone via Odin?

Phone Failed Odin MF3

Hey guys,
I think I bricked my phone beyond repair! I attempted to use Odin to Restore my phone to MF3 stock using the tar files that were generously provided. During the Odin restore it failed, not sure what exactly happened. I have used the same files to restore the same mf3 phone on two other occasions. Now my phone won't boot to recovery or Odin mode and just says that firmware update encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again. The Kies recovery never works and I am left with a phone that is a brick. Will bestbuy be able to do anything through the smart tool? Or anything I can do?
Thanks!

You could try here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360859
or pull the battery, wait a minute, and put it back and see if you can use the correct key combination to get back into download mode and try ODIN again.
Thanks for the suggestions. But nothing seems to kick it out of this Kies recovery mode. I'm sending it back to samsung. Hopefully they can repair or ship me a new device as I am still under warranty.

Same thing happened to me.. I worked for hours and finally about gave up, but tried flashing the I337 PIT file thru Odin in the Pit option.. It said failed but I pulled the battery and rebooted into recovery then restarted.. Google for the pit file.. It's on my computer but if you can't find it I can upload it for you.. Good luck!
Btw, the screen that says "firmware has encountered an issue" should still be able to be recognized in Odin..
I had to get on my computer anyway, so here is the file I used for the PIT box in Odin 3.09.. Hope it works for you!

[Q] At&t samsung galaxy s4 i337 not booting into os

Hello there! I recently had purchased a Samsung Galaxy s4. I did not really enjoy touchwiz. I really wanted Google Play Edition. Anyways, my phone is stuck in ODIN mode with a message saying "Downloading... Do not turn off target!" I know that you can enter download mode and hit cancel to boot. But, my issue is different. Listen. I got safestrap on my s4, and it worked perfectly. I backed up my phone and installed Google Play Edition on the STOCK slot. Turned out, Google Play Edition would not boot up so I went back into safestrap and added a new rom slot. Then I restored my firmware on that slot. I left the stock slot not working... Then I uninstalled safestrap at boot up, not thinking about the stock rom. THIS IS THE BIG MISTAKE. I then rebooted my phone, and I get odin with the error message. I can't get into recovery settings or safestrap of course. I am now stuck with no options on my phone. I try to go to download mode and hit cancel. This did not boot up my phone, only my Google Play Edition which was not working. Now I can't change my rom slot. All I want to do now is go back to touchwiz. I want to restore my phone, but how? I would really appreciate your help!
I was running android 4.3 jellybean on MF3 so I can't load TWRP.

Do you remember what bootloader you were on?
If you were on anything higher than MF3 you are wasting your time, as you cannot downgrade this far.
MK2 and up requires those specific Odin tars. Since the original post was in January I will assume you were on MK2 at that time.
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545
Personally, I would just go with the NB1, since root is now out for us. Once you odin the NB1 file, grab the files needed to towelroot, root, install superuser.apk, install safestrap 3.72 and you will probably be back in business
Now... thus all said, I am having a nightmare myself... last night I was listening to music on my I337 NC1 stockly rooted, when all of a sudden it froze... so I pulled the battery (which was fully charged), put it back in, and now my phone won't power up.
Being the geek I am, I grabbed my original samsung udb cable and plugged it into my windows machine... lo-and-behold windows recognized it, but as a completely different device... Qualcom USB or something...
How can I get back to download mode? Or do I need a JTAG? :crying:

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I probably cant help, but why not try.
Question, what do you mean by stockly rooted NC1? Are using the NC1 stock rom but rooted, or are you using another rom? Did you root using the download method or the towel root? Just curious.
I take you have tried to get to download mode using these steps?
Power off the phone completely by removing its battery for 5 seconds.
Re-insert the battery back into its place.
Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons, all at the same time.
Release the buttons only when the ‘Warning!!’ message appears.
Next, press Volume Up button to confirm that you wish to enter Download Mode.
Your device will now show a green Android with the ‘Downloading… Do not turn off target’ text listed under it.

Remove kies. Reinstall samsung drivers.
Find and flash TWRP 3.0.0 with odin ( on recovery is not SEAndroid enforcing hold volume up and home for 5-10 seconds. Also flash the Custom Kernel by eyeless95 on the forum, its sepermissive.

What about for SM-G530H?
Do u have the link for the kernel?
After installing kernel what should I do then?
Two ways. Find stock rom in Sammobile and install via Odin (newest). Or try once again install it via Kies. You sould can restore it with Kies, but dont plug phone to computer. Write down S/N or something like that (it's under battery) and model, and Kies will download system

There are kernels and recoverys in the development section that work fine for your phone .

UnRoot Not Working (Save Me Please!!!)

So a few months back I followed PSouza's guide (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039) to rooting the S7 Edge and everything worked perfectly. As of late, the phone has had many general performance issues and I decided today unrooting may be the best option for right now. So I cracked back open the thread and followed the instructions and low and behold, as always, something had to go wrong. For starters, Odin gives me a fail before it even really gets started (log below).

The phone itself gives a SW Rev check fail after that (in the download mode).
So I thought to myself I'd just keep it in the meantime and just restart it and use it for now, but low and behold I now can't leave download mode. If I restart regularly, I'm brought back to a software update failed screen, and if I switch to recovery mode (? vol up + home + power) I've wiped the cache partition as another forum suggested, but then going to reboot system now... That restart brings me right back into recovery. I currently have the phone off charger in hopes the battery dies and something changes then.
I'm also downloading the very very latest firmware update for the S7 Edge in hopes that maybe Odin will like it a bit better than this one (VZW_G935VVRU2APE1.zip).
Any ideas? Any solution that gets me a working phone again, I'll definitely make a donation to your PayPal! Thanks in advance for any help!
To anyone reading this having the same issue, follow the instructions in this post (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71133959&postcount=27) worked like a charm.

Have you tried using smart switch? It is a PC app by Samsung which will automatically choose the correct firmware for you, flash it and also unroot your phone. It is the easiest way to do it.

The issue I was having was that Smart Switch wasn't recognizing my phone off the bat, and when I went to emergency recovery, it would say my serial number was incorrect so it wasn't useable for me.

Trying to install stock fw using Odin - can't get it working

Hello,
I've been on a custom ROM for a few weeks and wanted to go back to Stock now that Oreo has been released.
I'm having difficulty to install stock using Odin 3.1.2 using latest stock firmware.

Managed to go back to stock but my apps still think I am rooted. Any ideas why? Is it the firmware?

If you've rooted a g950f/g955f, then you've tripped Knox permanently, even if you install stock firmware it will stay tripped. Because of this, any Samsung app that uses Knox such as s-health and s-pay, and so on will say you are rooted, only way to solve this issue is to flash custom rom
