Hey guys.
My G2 Verizon popped up with an OTA update this morning. I have TWRP and running the stock rom.
I clicked ok to the update and my phone rebooted into TWRP and no matter which reboot option i select it still reboots to TWRP. I CANNOT GET BACK TO MY SYSTEM. it did not update either fyi.
Any ideas to get it to atleast boot back into my system so i can use my phone?? i couldnt care less about the update at this point.

Or, if you still have access to your recovery use adb sideload to install a rom, or push a ROM using adb.

Allllllllso this does not belong in development. It belongs in Q&A. Start making a thread there, a mod will be locking this one

did you perhaps try flashing another rom than rebooting? Just making sure haha...

I have not tried flashing any roms. I just want to get back to my stock rooted system.
I told it to do the OTA update and it booted into TWRP so i believe its somehow looking to get to the android bootloader or whatever and twrp is getting in the way. something like that. Any ideas that dont involve losing my stock rooted system?
any way to get the phone to boot to the stock android recovery so it can do the OTA? it should then boot normally i hope
I just downloaded this OTA earlier. Problem is, I haven't rooted my replacement phone yet so can't see what it is without flashing it. Well, I'm going to drive to McDonalds here soon and connect via their WiFi on my old G2 with the broken screen and see if I can get the update to run there as well, but to save the hassle, anyone know what this update it? I'd rather not flash it until I know I can still root and that the Loki exploit still works.
Then again, I haven't been promoted at all to update anything. I just noticed it as it was downloading. It doesn't seem like much as it downloaded in around 10 seconds (with a 25-30Mbps connection).

i sure wont ever again. So that first link means i have to completely reflash the stock rom? no way to get it to reboot properly?
i have a backup in my recovery from a month ago. do you think restoring this will work or no?

No. This is why people need to do reaserch before they start messing with root and stuff
There is no easy fix to go back to stock

In TWRP, use the advanced section or wheverever it's at and make sure that /cache is mounted. Then use the file manager in TWRP and explore /cache. Delete any ota files you see there. That should at least get you booting back into Android. Then again, the OTA will then again download. In theory it should (and it won't take root away...). Then you can just ignore the update until you either flash a custom ROM that disables the OTA from downloading or make the fix yourself. This way you can wait and let others see what it is before flashing. The last thing you want is an update that removes the Loki exploit.
Finding another root exploit is much easier than trying to find another way to bypass the bootloader.
Edit: I haven't tried this, so let me know if it works. I'm assuming that Android is seeing an ota in /cache and automatically going into recovery to flash it and will continue to do so until the ota file is deleted (or renamed?). Once that directory is empty again it should boot normally and you will effectively have ignored the OTA. I don't think a custom recovery will even flash OTAs will they? I haven't tried since my old OG droid days, but back then, custom recoveries failed to flash them.
What really sucks is I don't have easy access to any PC with Admin access. So the next time I reboot, it's going to flash the thing. Good thing is, I don't have to ever reboot the G2 nor does it reboot by itself, so hopefully the phone stays on AND the update doesn't mess with the Loki exploit.

in my cache i have 3 folders:
fota
lost+found
recovery
should i delete the whole fota folder?
You root the 12b update the same way you did 10 and 11 just search for ioroot16 and use the Loki image datechnerd made on this forum.
Or just flash the new radios and stay on 10b or 11a.

Yeah, delete that entire folder. The other folders are normal I think...just make sure that each one is empty. If there are ANY files in /cache, you can delete them. You should also be able to accomplish the same thing by just formatting /cache in TWRP

It's much easier to just suggest clearing /cache to him, and then discuss the update here so others can know what the update does before making gthe same mistake. Mods will move the thread if necessary.

Also, this is the section for the VS980. I am a developer, and would have posted any info regarding the VS980 update here (but yeah, queations should go to Q/A as he said. But to the OP, if clearing cache works (I don't see why it wouldn't), then you may want to edit your OP and make it an informative thread about the OTA.

So I rarely ever root my android devices. Recently bought an S4 AT&T variant (SGH-i337) and felt to locked, so I rooted. Everything was fine, until I mistakingly deleted the system files. This ended up making me lose root as well. So now my phone won't boot, but I can somehow get into TWRP recovery mode. Problem is its not rooted and I can't flash any rom. I don't have a PC easily accessible. So I would like to know if there is a way to root through command line. I am able to upload files onto the phone via adb. Any help would be much appreciated.
Flash super su-busybox in your recovery. Do you have a nandroid you can flash.
Ps, you don't need to be rooted for twrp. If you have a nandroid that's what I'd flash to get your system back.

Just to make sure I understand you, nandroid is the backup I originally made right? Unfortunately I don't have access to my computer from where I am so I can't get it. I am curious as to how twrp didnt get erased after I stupidly deleted the system. So with the nandroid it shouldn't give me the samsung system warning about unauthorized files right? And I appreciate your input by the way!

Nandroid would be the backup you did in twrp. Usually it would be on your sd card. I'm not sure what you have on your computer. Twrp isn't erased because it's on a different partition than your system partition.
In twrp, do you have any files when you click on restore? Those would be the nandriods

Ahh, yes. I have that, except I backed it up on my computer instead because it took up a lot of room. I won't have access to my computer until friday night. I should be able to push that using adb right, because my phone isn't recognized any other way unfortunately. But thanks for the clarification. I will also try super user again. I tried one, but maybe I'll try it again to see if that'll work.

Not that easy. You'll need to get the stock firmware. I use sammobile.com for firmware. You have to register but it's free. You down load a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. That's what you'll use on Odin. Then follow this guide with the file you downloaded http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398/url]

MDL is required in order to flash several of the ROMs here on XDA. you can get the MDL firmware here. scroll down to the bottom of the page and enter the required code to begin the download.
as jd1639 said, be sure to root and freeze the necessary apps after first boot up. keep the sim card out and wifi off until this is complete. cheers

The firmware is the operating system. It's like Windows or Linux.
Umm, that doesnt sound right. Im very familiar with unix, and ive never heard anyone interchangeably call linux a firmware. Online they definitely make that distinction. If you're saying that then its more like a part of the OS or connected to it somehow? If not then I really gotta reevaluate what I think I know lmao.

First off I apologize if this is in the wrong section or has been asked before, I couldn't really find the answer I'm looking for.
So I have my S4 (4.2.2 if it matters) rooted and TWRP recovery loaded on it. I was getting the ATT update message and I kept hitting ignore or remind me latter, however I noticed last night it starts to try to install and restart without giving me an option to cancel it. I quickly remove the battery to prevent my phone from updating.
My question is, how do I stop this update when I turn my phone back on? I don't want it to update the firmware and lock my boot loader. Or am I making a big deal over nothing?
Thanks in advance

Just one more think, I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone back on that the update won't finish installing (it was in the process of installing when I shut it off).
Thanks again for all the help.
I'm assuming that u have MDB/MDL firmware. ......Take your Att sim card out. ... u need to root your phone. ... install Titanium back up and go to Att software update app ....back up first just incase u need it to return to att and then uninstall it...... that's should stop it from OTA update
SWYPED_FROM_S4_MF3_REDVENOM
Yep, you're going to want to root and then rename or freeze those files, you found in the Google search. That will stop the update
Taking just the SIM out at this point won't help. Only way to completely stop it now since it was installing is to Odin back to MDL and start the root process.

So not to keep asking the same question, when the sim card is out of the phone, will that prevent the update from installing?
Also to clarify, I've already rooted my phone and installed TWRP recovery. Again at this point I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone on the update isn't going to automatically finish installing before I can block the app/files
Again, thanks so much for the help, can't wait to get a rom installed and start enjoying the awesomeness
I'd follow graydiggy suggestion. Don't turn it on except to go into download mode. Flash the mdl firmware, then root again and freeze the update apps or install a custom Rom
I could be wrong but I believe the update won't apply since the stock recovery has been replaced with a custom recovery . If I am wrong Im sure somone will come in and correct this statement .

Won't matter
If you have a custom recovery, the update should fail the install with an error 7. However, I would still completely start from scratch by using Odin to get a clean slate without an update. You could actually use Kies and do the emergency restore. Whatever you do, do not boot the phone into the OS until it has been completely wiped by either Odin or Kies. Only download mode.

boot into recovery and in twrp manually go erase the update.zip from cache/fota. Then wipe cache before rebooting. That, or flash the PIT file. I posted directions on how to extract the stock signed PIT file but you'll probably need someone to extract one for you since you dont want to boot to Android yet.

a different approach w/ i537 jb4.2.2

Can someone link me here please?
Not sure if I should just delete the app or go the root explorer route and delete the knox file (not sure if that is the only file to remove either?)
I have compiled all my notes at: freehelpinghands.wordpress DOT com/2013/12/15/best-way-to-unlock-root-a-new-phone/
and the answer to my question above will likely be answered by the time this is being read.
I've tried asking this in the q&a section on the main thread but I think I'm being ignored because I'm asking a question about the at&t version inside a Verizon thread. Idk. But I've tried installing hyperdrive rls15 and I follow the instructions on the main page for at&t and I get to where I need to reboot and wait 10 mins. Well it just stays on the splash screen. I've tried repeating the install 4 time's now amd the same results. I found a tooic saying fix permissions but it fails. I'm sorry if this has been asked already. I have looked through several different threads but I may have overlooked it. My phone baseband is I337UCUAMDL im on 4.2.2 and have twrp v2.5.0.2 as my recovery. I've also verified the md5. any suggestions?

Same problem here,
I'm going to try and install a kernel through TWRP. I've tried a fresh root / loki install, same issue.
For me, I remember having to install an AT&T compatibility pack.zip file on previous Hyperdrive releases, like RLS 10.
I tried to install RLS15 and at the very end of install, it says this:
Flashing Kernel
file_getprop: failed to stat"/tmp/aroma/kernel.prop": No such file or
directory
However, for some reason, after trying to install this new release, I was not able to restore data in TWRP from a backup of RLS 10. I was able to restore to a non-rooted backup (i don't know how), and it appears that I am not rooted anymore, and I don't think I have superuser anymore. So, I'm not exactly sure where to start.
Glad to see I'm not the only one this is happening to. Please let me know if you figure it out. I noticed the same thing but thought I seen someone else say that it was nothing.
so i redownloaded all files and nothing. tried loki patch and nothing. tried kt kernel because i seen another post with someone saying it was the only one that worked for them and nothing. im still stuck on splash screen. please if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know im desperate now. i really want to try this rom so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Same here =/
Flashing a kernel before ROM didn't do anything.
I'm starting to think that we don't have Super User installed anymore, I tried re-installing some BackUps (rooted backups)
and TWRP said something like, you don't have SuperUser instyalled, want to install it? *Slide to Install* Phone quickly reboots (not showing any proof of Super User being installed in TWRP emulator) and still no effect.
When I get some time ill look into how to install SuperUser, which I thought was already put on when we root.
Have you tried installing any other ROMS with success?
Are you still on MDL? I am, and im starting to think i need to just go ahead and do the update from AT&T, and then switching over to Safestrap recovery, but i hope i can find another solution before doing all that.

Are you using Safe strap?
I was having the same problem after like 4 tries i figured out that every time I would download this it would go into the internal memory when it should have gone into the xd. I had to move folders manually. After that everything has been working correctly.
Do you know what folders have to be moved and where?

I created a new one on the xd card named it roms so I won't forget.
All I did was go to Mounts in TWRP recovery and mounted my microSD card and this fixed the problem.

cool im going to go try it in a few mins thanks
i tried mounting both internal and external and still nothing can you go through the steps you did from start to finish maybe im missing something
Okay, so the first thing i did was mount my microSD(external sd) then a full wipe. Even though i was mounted to my sd card, i still had to navigate to my internal memory to select the zips i wanted to flash. I first installed an older release of Hyperdrive Rom, and during installation, i selected Full Wipe option again. i also added my AT&T compatibility pack.zip to be flashed right after the ROM. Also, i dont know if this affected anything, but i tried installing the T-Mobile compatibility pack on a previous attempt. I read somewhere where some1 did this and it worked for them, but it didnt work for me until i did another install of RLS15 and the ATT pack.
Hope this can help you

Here is how to get to OA6 100% stock:
1. DL Odin 3.09
2. DL stock OA6 TAR
3. Make a backup of your apps/data (TiBu/Helium/etc). MAKE SURE THE APP/DATA BACKUPS ARE TO YOUR EXT SD CARD!!!
BACKUPS (from TiBu and apps like that) PROBABLY WILL NOT WORK GOING FROM 4.4.4 TO 5.0!
4. Go into recovery and do a factory reset and wipe system/internal sd/cache/dalvik. Power off phone completely!
5. Power on into Download Mode and flash the stock OA6 tar (put it in "AP/PDA" in Odin).
**6. Do a factory reset in the stock recovery after you flash the tar (not necessary but deff won't kill ya!). **OPTIONAL
7. In "About Device" your baseband and software should now end in OA6 and Android version should be 5.0. If they are not, then you did something wrong, go back to step 2 and try a redownload, and reflash of stock OA6 tar.
**OPTIONAL: Root** 8. DL CF-Auto Root.
9. Place in PDA/AP slot in Odin and run it.
10. DL a custom recovery of your choosing and flash.
11. Reboot to recovery and FLASH THIS (SuperSU v2.45). Now root should work reliably on Lollipop (THANKS CHAINFIRE!!)
12. Download and install MOAR v6.0! **If you do this no need to do steps 13 & 14!**
13. Download and flash Knox Removal to get rid of Knox. BE SURE TO THANK TDUNHAM!
14. Get flashlight toggle as well as plenty others with THIS APP!
15. PROFIT!

1. DL this stock NCB tar.
2. Take out your EXT SD Card (if you have one).
3. Flash the stock NCB tar (put it in "PDA" in Odin).
4. Do a factory reset in the stock recovery after you flash the tar (not necessary but deff won't kill ya!).
5. Reboot into Download Mode and make sure it says ROM type= OFFICIAL! If it says custom you will not be able to take the OTA.
6. Reboot, check for the OTA to "ND2" and wait for it to complete.
7. Your baseband and software should now end in ND2. If it does not, then you did something wrong, go back to step 1 and try a redownload, and reflash of stock NCB tar.
8. Re-root.
Also if someone that has SuperSU PRO version, can check if "Survival Mode" works for the GS5, that'd be awesome!

13 hrs left . Anybody want to scp it to my machine? If so I will host it for a few months, got a cable connection but it will definitely be faster than that link.
not needed
all this is unneeded if someone would just post the update from their phone cache for those that are rooted.

Why the big deal???
I don't see the big deal with upgrading to ND2. Haven't read that it allows the download booster to work...lol
This what is suppose to be updated:
Google search results are no longer included in the list when using S Finder
Fixed device responsiveness when using S View Cover
Enable camera capture during voice call
Fixed alarm failure when deleting alarm
Fixed email duplication, when moving an email from original folder to another folder the email should only be viewable in the moved to folder
FYI personally like how the S finder pulled up google search stuff.
That's what I thought, thanks.

Now on ND2, rerooted, TWRP'd...
restored via Titanium...
had to rerun SDFix...
Thanx

why don't people just wait for the new stock rooted rom of that version and just flash that?!?

They don't necessarily repackage the ROM with every update. I did the upgrade just to get the baseband update. Not too painful at all.

Unfortunately you cant :/
Download TiBu that is the closest you can get...
If you download a custom rom that keeps it up to date, they will probably include the update and you can just flash over it. but stock rom there isnt much u can do.

Trying to undo the last steps by flashing back the modified boot.img and TWRP.
Booting into TWRP and it asks for a password to decrypt storage!!!
Is wiping the only option??

I followed the guide (part 10. How To Take An OTA Update If You Have Root).
Then after rebooting (before installing the OTA that is) I got a message saying encryption unsuccessful and I needed to wipe my phone. I turned it off instead and tried to restore it as it was before. Screw the OTA, I just need my phone back. I flashed back boot and recovery, is system.img or vendor.img the culprit?
Any ideas? Do I need to wipe data?

I really don't know what went wrong here, other people have done this with no issues. In TWRP it should be able to decrypt as long as you enter the password/pin.

I had a screen lock pattern, I entered the numbers that correspond to it (from what I read somewhere else, like a num keypad), no joy.
But then again, shouldn't actual booting into the system work as well? Why give this error msg?
I'm going to format then...
unless your super comfortable with ADB and fastboot, flashing things through them is never a good idea, you will screw up allot of the time. its always easier for the average user to wait for a ota zip and flash that. Or never root and accept otas.
Im not saying never use adb, just dont use it when its super important to keep your data

The only problem with that is even when an OTA zip is available you'd need to use fastboot to flash system etc to remove root anyway.
So I formatted, then set it up, then tried restoring my latest nandroid backup and now it doesn't recognise the pattern lock!

Thanks for that, although at first after reading the first few posts I thought there was no solution, luckily I kept reading until here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63797741&postcount=34
I did that and it worked! so at least I got back my working phone. Back to square one (almost, I lost all my local copies of photos, with only cloud backup for the last 2 weeks or so) with no OTA installed. I may try it again at some other point or wait for a more safe method.
