[Q] Battery heat ?

Hi.
While playing games my Xperia Play produces lots of heat. The back of the phone, and the gamepad feels really warm.
I checked the temperature with Battery Monitor Widget and when I don't use the phone it stays around 25-30 degrees Celsius, but when I play games (even 2D ones) it goes up to 38-40.
Is this a normal thing or there's something wrong with my battery ?

I can confirm this happens. Basically it is using more charge, therefore as a side effect of that it produces more heat from the chemical reaction. Same thing when you have it charging.
It isn't horrible, but try not to let it get too hot as it may shorten the lifespan of the battery.
So this is true for all xperia plays that after some time of gaming the phone will be really warm ?
The phone will get warmer, of course... but 40 degrees is not excessively hot. It feels warm in your hand, but it's not dangerous. A dangerous temperature would be close to 50.
The highest temperature that I had was 44 degrees after a long Nova 2 session.
I am a bit worried by the fact that while browsing the net through wifi the battery heats up to 38 degrees, but it's okay as long as it's less than 50 :> ?
Thanks for the help.
I'd say if it goes above 46 or 47 you just switch it off for a while. Not only because you don't want to overheat it, but because running the phone on higher temperatures reduces battery life (higher temperature means higher resistance to conductivity for metals).
Thanks for the into that it's perfectly normal for the phone to feel warm.
Have you ever reached 50(or that 46,47) degrees on Xperia Play or any other phone ? What app made your battery that hot ?

My former phone, the Galaxy S had HUGE issues with temperature while using 3G. Every time I toggled it on, the phone became awfully hot and the battery drain skyrocketed. I got it on 53 degrees once, since it was in my pocket. I was a bit scared, but the phone resisted it. Still, it wasn't pleasant.
The advantage of the Xperia Play being bulky and plasticky is that it's hard to bring it to extreme temperatures. If it's hard to make it hot, it has a positive impact on battery life as well.

Yea, this happens to me all the time. When using anything that drains my battery it heats it up as well.
All batteries release heat as current passes through them. When the phone is idle, the heat released is low enough your hand doesn't feel it. As the current increases while gaming, so does the heat.
It's nothing to worry about. The batteries are designed to handle heat without being damaged.
Especially since android devices are becoming more popular in places like india, where there's a lot of ambient heat.

That is normal . depending on your region temperature...
I live in South Africa where in the summer it gets very hot 30 degrees plus...MY phone will be 32 when idle...It never goes higher than 38 degrees though.
Now its winter in my country.Outside temp is 15-25 and my phone will be 20(idle)-30(usage after 1hr of use)
If you have custom kernel installed it may be due to you disabling DVFS

Plastic is a terrible heatsink. It doesn't hold off external heat and it has serious issues draining heat. Particularly when there is something on the other side of the plastic (hand, leg, coat, etc.)
Anything below 1ºC and above 45ºC (Idle) and you need to start worrying.
It's 24ºC right now, and mine's been idling at 26ºC on the desk (inside an otterbox commuter) for a couple of hours.

How hot is your galaxy S7 edge

Hi
So I bought my GS7E a week ago .. I started to notice that it heats so much when I use it
I just don't know if this is the normal heat for it or not so I wanted to know from your experience
so at normal base when I'm not using it it stays at 34-35C
When I use it for whatsapp, facebook an normal light use it goes up to 37C
when I charge it it goes up to 40C
and sometimes when it's in the car on in my pocket and nothing is running in the background it can go to 40C too
that makes it annoying to receive calls or to hold it and put it next on my ear
are these temperatures OK? or is there is something with my device ... what are your numbers
Oh that seems in my opinion to be too hot, Mine is in Idle at 28°-29°, when i Use it (WhatsApp, Facebook... etc.) at 30°-32° and when i Charge it it is around 33°-35°
According to AIDA64, my phone is currently at 42c whilst charging from flat.
It's certainly warm, but at one point I saw it hit 50c when charging and using the phone at the same time.
what is the temperature when using normally not whilst charging ?
what is version is your CPU ?
I have the Exynos Version
It ranges from 33-37C
I have the Exynos S7 Edge. Mine at normal temperature ranges between 25 and 28 degrees, but can go as low as 22 degrees if not used for a bit (I have Greenify set to close all non-essential apps on sleep). If I'm doing some basic activities like texting, taking a few snaps on the camera or browsing simple web pages, it will go up to between 29 and 33 degrees. If I use it for gaming, depending on the graphics, it will go up to between 34 and 38 degrees. I've never seen it hit 40 degrees, although I reckon if I pushed it with numerous benchmarks or an hour of playing Real Racing 3 it probably would.
Temperature wise, this thing is fantastic, the best phone I've ever owned. Under ten minutes on Minecraft on my old Note 3 and it would be uncomfortable to hold. I've never had that with the S7 Edge, although I can't speak for the Snapdragon variant, which I've heard doesn't handle temperature as well.

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the OnePlus 6 stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Phone has not felt even the slightest bit warm to the touch no matter what I'm doing so far. Like literally stone cold 24/7.
Mine gets hot after playing 3D games. The heat is mostly at the top of the device around the camera area.
Fine in normal use though.
I've played a couple games for a while and it seems to only heat up on graphically intensive, but I mean that's expected. I played the stranger things game for about an hour and it didn't warm up at all. I switched to shadowgun legends, maxed the settings out, and it started getting hot within like 5 minutes. As Joe explained, it gets hot near the camera, but it isn't too bad and it cools down really fast, literally in a minute or so after closing the game.
Yeah, agree with all of the above. I should clarify the game I was playing was Honkai 3rd Impact on max settings which is fairly graphically intensive.
At what temperature does your OP6 hover at.
I don't play games.
As per cpu-z, mine stays between 30.5 to 39 degree Celsius.
(The temp here in Punjab, India reaches 47).
It feels like warmish after I installed Apple music app yesterday.
Before that didn't feel any warmth.
Thanks.

I tested cpu-z for you and got very similar temperatures. I was at around 28°c after turning my phone on. It went to around 31°c when scrolling through twitter and listening to Spotify. And after playing showdowgun legends for a few minutes it got up to 38°c.

I'm no expert, but since we have similar temperatures, I'd assume it's completely normal.
Yup, same temps here. Nothing to worry about.

Hi..
Could test with the cpu-z app as to what temperature your set reaches when it's the warmest.
Mine has reached almost 39 degrees Celsius when using for everything other than games, for an extended period.
Sometimes though.
Usually it stays around 31 to 35 degrees Celsius on Cpu-z ( its peak summer time here in India, with daytime temperature always above 40).
Above what temperature should one get worried?
Cheers
you "worry" above 80 degrees Celcius, but I dont like it to get much higher than body temp.
I does cool off fast, But it can get really warm sitting in the sun.
I leave mine in a holder on my dash while I drive, playing pandora via bluetooth, and it can get pretty hot.
A few minutes of use, Pandora playing through internal speaker. Heavy JavaScript use on web browser.
It should be noted that my OP6 is Rooted and DeBloated.
Still not clear on one thing.
As to how hot is worrisome?
I spent a full hour browsing Chrome, in a car in a parking lot with no AC on and outside temp hovering at 38-39 degree centigrade,
and my device's battery temp (as on cpu-z app) went to about 41.2 degree centigrade.
I turned the AC on and within no time fell down to 34 centigrade.
Is that normal behaviour?

Of course it's normal behavior if your surrounding temperature is that high
Did you notice, the manual says:
Only operate your phone between 0-35°C temperature and 35-85% humidity

Good luck with that in the summer!
I'm finding the screen does get noticeably warm to the touch at the top area near the SoC, just from normal use (such as using Chrome etc). Battery temp rises to about 35 degrees.
A little concerning I'd say.
Another disadvantage of glass back (beside dirt, fingerprints, fragility)
Here you can see how the OnePlus 6 compares to 'water cooled' Galaxy Note 9 in Tom'sGuide test, 1+6 holds its head up high:

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Moto G7 Power before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Loving the battery life. I have the XT1955-2 dual sim, I believe its for the Mexican/Latin market. After using it for 5 days and giving it a few full charges, I'm having no problems getting 12 hours of screen on time. Right now I'm at 54% with a screen on time 7 hours and 54 minutes. Yeah the phone has some short comings, I bought for the battery life and it is exceding my expectations. Wonder what the single sim phone will do.
What apps do you use? Do you keep gps or Bluetooth on? Is most usage on wifi or LTE?
Impressive Battery
I have bought Moto G7 Power too, the European Model. Its battery life is impressive really! I keep open 4G at all times and I get about 14 hours of SOT.
I am sorry in advance not trying to insult or anything when it comes to battery life of any smartphones in general
But under heavy usage. How long can this phone last?
I'll be travelling soon so i need the longest battery possible
=============================================
If anyone is kind enough to conduct one test on this device
There is an app called "photorealism benchmark 2018" (very heavy GPU infinite test)
If someone can download this free and let the phone run from 100% > 0% with around 30% brightness on WIFI and see
I doubt it can last more than 5 hours of screen on time running this app

Hey there. Did you use any particular App to save battery life?
And how would you discribe your usage pattern?
Any special apps on daily, heavy usage?
I got around 5 hours SOT right now and fully charged around 24 hours ago with 60% juice left.
I feel like my battery life is a bit weaker than your experience. Or do I overreact ?

What kind of SOT type tho?
Just Youtubing and social media? 5000 mah can last hours / offline watching video via internal player can get this more than 15 hrs of SOT i think with 5000 mah?
What about under heavy usage like running GRAPHIC BENCHMARK continously?
35 hours on a charge
8.5 hrs SOT
Around 6 hrs at 100% brightness
More than happy with this phone. Especially at only $212.00

My battery life experience with moto g7 power, pt.1:
(Can't upload a Screenshot here for unknown reason)
Now: 6% left
Last charged: 2 days ago
Screen on time: 11h 21min
> last charged friday night (it's monday 9 a.m. now.)
> Tasks: watching YouTube videos, gaming, social media, WhatsApp, browsing, some internal tasks with arranging picture folders, encrypt media with an app, downloading from cloud. Shared a hotspot and connected a bt headset.
>Tried to not use screen that often. I think it does a decent job for what Motorola promises.

In my opinion Watching Youtubes / Social Media / WhasApp / Browsing do not drain the battery that much
Only running GPU or ALwAYs 3D GRAPHIC ON counts towards depleting the battery.
IF you can download photorealism 2018 free and using that app to drain your battery from 100% with 40% brightness you will see
Doubt anyphone with 5000 mAh can pass 6 hours SOT mark

Yes GCam is perfectly working, more info here
Closest to dead I've gotten mine is 42%.
Auto brightness, with brighter bias.
12hrs 48mins SOT
4hrs light gaming, 4hrs heavy gaming, Spotify the whole time, Reddit and forums, and 2hrs live TV.
My wallpaper is Sachs Marine Aquarium (photo realistic Aquarium). And yes, I stare at the fish sometimes. Quite relaxing.
No wifi, no Bluetooth. Some downloads, some app updates.
No phone calls. Minimal texting.

I went a whole weekend using the phone on mobile data only, no WiFi, and the battery was wonderful. Better than being on WiFi. Wasn't expecting that.
Very good info so far IMO

Very cool info so far in my opinion SIR for SOT of an smartphone
But, i was hoping you did super heavy usage of SOT
Hey guys i've played pubg from 100% battery to 0% (with high quality settings) + 50% screen brightness Plus example GPS all other features turned on in the background. ... etc
Additionally with multitasking in the backgrounds too.
Heavy usage?
Does this count?
4hrs MarioKart Tour, 2hrs TinyTower, 4hrs TV, 3hrs Reddit, Instagram and other social apps for another 2hrs.
I'm at 38%
80% brightness
GPS always on (testing weather in Kustom)
And about an hour in Kustom editor.
Live wallpaper at 60fps
Sometime soon, I plan on seeing how long this will do vr. That ought to be enough for a decent battery drain test
EDIT
Running this device around 70-80% of it's max speed seems to be the point where the battery starts to drain. What I mean is, pushing this device hard results in almost normal draining (compared to a standard battery size). Light to moderate usage seems to have no effect on the battery life, but larger more demanding tasks that push it clearly drain the battery. I'm trying to explain the battery barely drops until a big game is loaded. Then it drops slowly (but quick compared to light usage). I anticipate getting 8hrs of real gaming (psx emu) and still 8hrs light use.
For those who are rooted using Magisk, can you try the the FDE.AI module for a week or so and see if you are getting better battery life. I'm seeing some noticable improvement.
One last SOT update from me:
5hrs12mins Stardew Valley with max brightness and volume
Bluetooth Controller
1hr internet browsing
1hr social media
'8hrs 13mins Screen Usage Since Last Full Charge'
50% remaining
'11hrs remaining'
Feels safe to assume 12hrs SOT for me...
i want to buy that phone is the battery really good u get always about 5h screen on?
can anyonye upload pics from screen on
