Hey guys, good morning/evening/night.
My father has this problem that has been bothering him for a long time.
Basically the screen is sort of...flickering/low resolution-y
Months ago, it got stuck, never seeming to power up, so my father tried to throw it to a tree (don't know how strong though) and magically (or not) it can finally turn on again, only the screen is all flicker-y/low resolution-y as I have told you guys before
Here's a shot of the flicker one and the non-flicker one.
Is there a way to fix it?
Or is it a hardware problem?
Thanks
Give it to the service center. They might replace the motherboard.Same problem occured with me 1 year ago.

There is surely a hardware problem with that phone.
Go to the service center to get it fixed.
If you have rooted your phone, you can flash stock rom and kernel, unroot, reset bin count, format everything and hide all the traces as much as possible.
If they find out that your phone is rooted, then you have to pay some bucks to get it fixed.
I still wonder why you throw such an amazing phone. If bug less driver sources are released by BroadCom, you will get ICS/JB stable upgrade from the developers.

Hi,
I'm a new Android user and I'm getting the Galaxy S I9000 tomorrow.
I would like to know the tasks to perform to have a "nice" phone aka:
- which firmware to upload (where to get it if its not on the official samsung site)
- which fixes to run (lagfix app isnt needed if proper firmware is applied right?)
- which apps to install if necessary (not gadgets but the ones that are mostly imperative to get a good experience)
- which other steps to take (eg format the phone to another file system?)
- gps fixes (?)
thanks a lot
Depends if you want to void your warranty on the first day or not.
First thing would be to update to the latest official firmware with KIES (if you can get the damn thing to recognise your phone, mine doesn't anymore...) and see if you have any problems with lag or whatever. My phone didn't have any lag once I used a 3rd party task manager. Now I have installed loads of widgets and clocks and crap like that, my phone does lag quite often, but I don't let it bother me as much as with other people.
For me, rooting isn't something I would want to do with such a new phone, I would rather wait for the official FROYO 2.2 update, if that doesn't fix the niggles I have, then I will consider it.
i dont mind the warranty but as far as i could ready going froyo isn't especially a good idea right now if i want it to be sort of stable
I mean JH2(?) or whatever the latest official one you get from KIES, not the leaked FROYO builds from samsungfirmwares. You might want to wait a month before rooting or whatever anyway just in case there's any hardware problems that might not be apparent. Things like screen issues, bluetooth, etc. You don't want to discover a dodgy bluetooth module or something like that just after you have rooted/flashed it and can't claim on the warranty.

Yea but even if he roots.. unrooting it (especially with the one click app) is extremely easy/safe.
Well as far as I could gather, hackeclair seems to be a nice rom with most things fixed inside.
I wonder still how i switch the whole phone from vfat to ext4 (if that's possible) and how to backup the original firmware (yeah forum + search = sucks, results are never what you want lol)

the phone still use vfat tho right?
I'm a linux user, and i'm wondering why it's not on ext ,i'd fear data corruption and poorer performance
i know.. not much of android, learning every minute lol. Suppose will be easier when i get the actual phone tomorrow

no exactly, it uses linux format, well at least if you are using the Performance hack dubbed as "one click lag fix"
but for people without lag to begin with, it's just a performance boost
As far as I understood the lag fix, its putting critical files into a ext3 ("linux format") image and leaves the rest on vFat, which fixes the lag, but it's hackish, and slower than if the whole phone was ext3 or ext4. also more corruption prone
I don't know how difficult it is to build a "own" rom, since switching to full ext3/4 would mean wiping the phone
I have never experienced this so called "lag" on my phone, and I have been using it for over a month. Makes me wonder just what exactly are they trying to do on their phones...

With all due respect, this is actually questionable. I haven't seen Samsung ever officially say that rooting or installing custom firmware voids the warranty, so any chance of showing where they say that?
For rooting, they are unlikely to care, because the change is quite basic. Generally, you can simply flash an official firmware before sending to a service centre anyway. Be aware that often companies charge if problems are caused by corrupt (or beta) firmware though, or there are signs of abuse. But this is generally the same with any media player company.. If you do hand them a phone which uses I9000M firmware, not I9000 though, they probably wont be impressed
Also, if the CPU is burnt out and there is evidence of overclocking, they may possibly be reluctant to accept it under warranty.
If Samsung were TRULY concerned though, they wouldn't have allowed access to USB debugging (which is a feature used only by people messing around, and developers). It is a grey area, and obviously, it makes sense to assume they will void your warranty. HOWEVER, the phones have no way of letting anyone know if they have been rooted before and tech support has better things to do than slow down their queue to aggrevate customers for something which rarely causes an issue.
Do keep in mind though, you can't trust every rom (some may be compromised), and if you don't need root, there probably isn't much sense rooting your phone.
Well i don't mind rooting it anyways
I'll probably need it at some point to toy with it too

yup, you will find a lot of cool software will not work if not rooted, for even something as simple as a backup program.

I mentioned the apps can be removed by rooting the device, and asked if there was a way to remove them without rooting the phone.
Interesting, but in Apple resellers, they seem to officially say the same thing (but from what I've seen, it was never enforced).
well ive got the phone now (woohoo)
i flashed it to JH2 and it's better indeed but it's the wrong model (no big deal it just works)
i got some issues with flashing, have to use a short usb cable without an possible interference else it just fail in the middle.. the phone doesnt get bricked tho, even with bad flash u can still go in download mode and flash with odin.
then i flashed with the newest froyo, and i didn't find any bug, im not sure which bugs are being talked about with it.
moreover I tested the GPS before upgrading and it sucked. I tested it after upgrade and it was perfect accuracy and much faster lock, so it looks like this firmware also fixes gps somehow
That's it for now ;p
I know this has been asked before but i just want to be sure, i just got the xoom and i want to know if i can send it in for repairs. I just want to kno if its like the ipod's/phones where there is a physical feature that is broken, so i can relock and my warranty will be valid.
Moto doesn't care.
K thanks

Wait, what makes you say that? Do you know something we don't know? As far as I've heard, they've been very specific to say that they will not support devices that have been hacked.

... yet they sold us a Google-Experience device with an unlocked bootloader.
You can't break anything seriously with software, which means any potential problems we'd have are either physical, user-abuse, or hardware defects. If you send it in and they determine that the problem is SW, they'll probably just wipe it back to stock and send it to you.
Fact does remain, however, that when you unlock that device you have to acknowledge you are voiding your warranty if you proceed. I'd like to think they would be reasonable - but at the same time, you have agreed to kiss off your warranty when you unlock.
That is why I am hesitant to unlock, on all of my Android Phones I have rooted because I know there is no hardware function that can tell it has been "Hacked" like on the iPhone. The Xoom I am unsure about because nobody has a definitive answer yet. My Eris broke 3 times while rooted and I unrooted each time and sent it in for a exchange. I just want the above situation to be equivilent to when/if (Hopefully not) my xoom has a hardware failure.

Moto has released their newest UPDATE for the xoom, on their website they included instructions and software to "RE-LOCK"/"UNROOT" your device before doing update. they dont care as long as you "relock"before sending the device to them to fix or reflash stock after you BUNKED a mod or etc...i dont recommend doing a theme flash, i did a few of them and had to go back to stock after every theme i tried, they did nothing but force close and i almost wasnt able to get back into CWM because the device wasnt recognized in adb...unlocking and rooting does nothing bad to your XOOM, best thing going for it, at least til there are some ROMS that couldnt get here any sooner...just a heads up

Thanks everyone! I think im going to unlock it when I get the chance, the SD card slot is a BIG thing that I could use, also I want it overclocked just a lil (1.25 Ghz per core) so it doesn't lag much on the home screen. Also im not going to be flashing roms and stuff mainly kernels. This device is going to be used as a family computer so i can't mess with it as much as I can with my Phone . Anyways thanks guys!
hello guys I have a nexus with one gingerbread 2.3.4 and when I use the 3G network after 2-3 minutes the phone restarts. with this bug I can not use Internet
any ideas? Thanks!
Yes. Me to.
What ROM and/or kernel combo you guys using?
I have the stock rom ota gingerbread 2.3.4, nothing changed, full stock. I recently tried miui 1.5.20 the problem is the same. may be a hardware problem?
Does the phone get hot to the touch on the back? Does the phone still reboot if you turn off 3g data and you go exclusivly Wifi?
Had the same issue with my old Nexus 1. Called HTC support and they immediately said it was a defective board. RMA'd and got refurb, but at least it does not reboot when I use 3g.
Good luck.
thanks jhsiao36, think if I update the radio version 5.12.00.08 can change something or brought it in for service?

I didn't help for me. I tried the 5.12.00.08 radio and it suffered from the same 3g reboots. But when I disabled 3g and used Wifi, never suffered from reboots.
If the phone is still under warranty, definitely encourage you to call them. HTC's customer and tech support is the best I've ever seen. They replaced it no questions asked, even though my phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked.

+1 They are awesome to deal with. It really makes me sad that they are starting to lock down their phones, because I won't buy a phone if I can't run custom ROMs on it.
But with the radio, I highly doubt flashing to 5.12 would help. Google released the 5.08 radio with the OTA update to Gingerbread. If 5.12 was any better, I'm sure they would've included it. There had to have been a reason they stuck with 5.08.
If you aren't afraid of losing anything, or already made backups, you could try the passimg method of giving you a completely stock install. See if the problem occurs with that as well. This would rule out software vs hardware.

I really don't think it can be resolve without sending it back to HTC for a replace/repair. As I said in my previous posts, I've tried 3 different ROMs - stock, cyanogenmod 6 and 7 - all exhibit the same issue - reboot when on 3g, but perfect if on Wifi. And yes, it will reboot even on a freshly install ROM (no apps installed).
HTC knows of this issue and they will replace/repair. I got a refurb and it works perfectly - stock, cyanogenmod 6 or 7.
Sorry, probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but search on <insert your favorite search engine> and you will find that this is a fairly widespread problem.
Thank you for your answer! It does not work, had sent a factory repair.
After several tests, on Monday I sent the phone in for service. I think it's a hardware problem, maybe a bad batch of motherboards.
my S / N: HT05... and your?
I will tell you just back from assistance.
Did you ever overheat it? I believe that the N1 has a problem if you really push it that it can overheat. Once it happens once it will happen again and every time it takes less and less to cause the reboot. Eventually it reboots just with 3G.
I was running mine in the car-mount with GPS, Google Maps (3G), screen on brightest, on a hot summer day while charging ... and it rebooted. Didn't think much of it but then it started rebooting every time I used GPS and charging.
In the end it was pretty near useless ... rebooting all the time. I sent it in twice (the first time they couldn't reproduce the problem) and the second time they replaced the board. Problem solved.
Now I am very careful not to overheat it.
I've been waiting a month to ask for help cause i'm stubborn and wanted to fix it on my own, but now i'm over it and accept the fact i need help haha. Basically, I've had this evo running CM7 and Destroyer with savage-zen kernels since january, i updated CM7 from a nightly to a RC and ever since i've been getting random reboots, i've tried everything, restoring my original nandroid, running stock RUU's and a combo of a million different roms and kernels with no luck, also updated radio/prl/NV. I've exhausted my resources now and dont know what else too try, anyone have any suggestions?

So completely unrooted/returned to stock it STILL random reboots?
If so, sounds like a hardware related issue.
Yeah went all the way back to unrooted s-on, I was starting to think it was hardware related, thanks mattykins
I can confirm that this is a hardware issue. My first EVO had the exact same problem you had, and continued to get worse and worse to the point where it would cycle 10 times before actually staying on for a little bit.
I called Sprint and told them that I thought my phone was defective, and when I explained the problem they said it was a known issue and that it would be replaced free of charge.
A friend of mine is actually dealing with this very thing right now and he said that Sprint is now shuffling people off to HTC for defective phone replacements. If you are within 1 year of buying the phone it should be free, as per the manufacturer's warranty.
I also had this happen and got it replaced. Now I'm without root but at least my phone works. It's definitely hardware related.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I had the same problem, no matter the rom or kernel, it would reboot and get stuck in bootloop. I finally gave in and went to sprint, turned out it was something with the hardware that would heat up my battery and then when it got to a certain temperature it would cause it to reboot. Definitely take it into sprint.

Thanks everyone, but if I take it to Sprint I have the feeling ill still have to pay 100 cause the screen has a crack across the bottom.

Try anyway.
Technically you would win legally because the crack has nothing to do with the issue you're having thus the warranty is valid.
(Although I guess they could claim you must have dropped it and that could have damaged something internal)
But the worst case scenario is they say you have to pay the $100 to get a new one and if you don't you still have your phone.
The best case, they fix or replace it.
Either way, its worth a shot.
Hey guys from XDA, I joined this forum a while back to download the S6 port firmware to S4, as I rooted my phone during that period and was excited to try out new things: I wanted to talk to the developer (Albe95) about some question, since I was (and still am) a bit afraid that any mistake would make my phone a useless brick.
Things went smoothly, he helped me and I thanked him for that, playing with my new ROM. Eventually I stopped browsing XDA but I came back to ask this, since a lot of people talk good about you guys.
After a couple of months I wanted to try out the famous CyanogenMod, which looked really cool and, since I knew what to do already, installed it with no problems whatsoever.
What to say? It's actually stable but I want to make my phone new again at the same time.
Now, my phone has a few problems which I'm aware of, but I don't know any fix to them, so here's a few questions that I'd appreciate if you could answer them.
N°1: when I first rooted my phone I remember I flashed a rooted stock rom (I vaguely remember that, so I might be wrong) whom Android version was 5.0.1 to root it. After done such, I noticed the rear camera (the one mostly used to take selfies, hehe) would crash whenever I switch to it in the Camera app. I just went on with it since I'm not really a selfie-obsessed kind of person but still I don't mind the occasional mirror . After a while, I installed the firmwares I listed above and I still get those problems. I'm afraid that it might be due some hardware-level problem, and I need to get it to any technichan/support center or try and fix it myself, perhaps buying the kit for the rear camera complete of screwdrivers and other parts. So, is there anything I can do, software-ly, to fix it? If not, what's the best option I have? Would it be hard to eventually fix/replace the camera?
N°2: ever since I bought this telephone (from mid-2013, the year it released), due to various falls/smashes etcetera its silver part (of which I'm not aware of its proper name) is damaged, some small parts are even gone and it just ruins the phone's look. I have no issue with that, but is it possible to replace it, and if it is, can you tell me its proper name (so I can buy it online and eventually try and replace it by myself)? If you still didn't get what part I'm talking about, I'll be glad to clarify. I'm not a native speaker, so I guess that you might find some trouble with my grammar or spelling.
N°3: whenever I start the phone, I always read the following text, coloured in red and yellow: "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING - Set Warranty Bit : kernel". I know I rooted my phone ergo I violated KNOX's counter, but is there anyway to just remove that party? It's a bit annoying also.
Well, thank you guys for reading and I hope you have a nice day!
1) Flashing an actual stock rom might fix your problem.
2) I think it's called bezil. Bezel and midframe also works. It can be replaced.
3) There is no way to remove it, except by using official firmware.
Thanks man, really appreciated! About the third answer though, just to clarify, you mean stock rom by official firmware right?

Yes, I mean the stock touchwiz rom that Samsung made.
Any modification to the bootloader (like flashing a recovery) will give you that message. It's basically like a warning.
