[Q] Quick Question! - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys!
I am a Nexus 5 user, would you recommend me to swap it for a LG G2?
I am looking for superior graphical performance / Smoothness, with Nexus 5 I get at max 34k on antutu.
I know that LG G2 has better battery life, camera and screen.
I will be trying different ROMs and kernels as I hate the crappy UI and should further improve performance.
Does it support ART and would it be as effective?
Have a nice day everyone!

It doesn't seem like the G2 will have ART in its upcoming KitKat update.
You have to ask yourself which kind of performance you want - is it benchmark performance (which IMO is useless) or is it real life usage? The stock LG UI works great and is indeed very smooth, but since the LG G2 and the Nexus 5 are very similar in terms of hardware, I doubt you will find any of those phones superior to each other
TL;DR - Upgrading to a G2 would give you better battery life, camera and maybe screen.

Thanks for the prompt reply

Does it have any overheating issues? They do have very similar specs.
so benchmarks don't reflect on day to day performance?
Whenever I activate ART it seems to cut back on alot of the Play store lag, is that existent in the lg g2?

There is no overheating issues if you don't mess with thermal throttling. The device will get "slower" in benchmarks when it's hot, but it still has a lot of processing power.
No, benchmarks do not really reflect day to day performance, the device is indeed smooth whether you score 29k on antutu or 36k.
LG G2 is still using 4.2.2 and that has no ART. It doesn't seem like it will be getting ART in the upcoming update to KitKat. At least for me, Play Store launches with just a milisecond delay. If that bothers you, stick to you N5.
Another thing, before you jump on the LG boat - LG is usually really slow with their updates. Last years flagship LG Optimus G is still running Jelly Bean 4.1.2 - not that it ain't smooth, but if you like to stay up to date then keep your N5 or flash custom roms on your G2.
I hope this helps

Thank you very much for clearing this up!
I have used a lot of modern smartphones and none were as smooth as the Nexus 5. it is very apparent while scrolling in the FB app or the Play store.
Using ART it is close to perfect, I want to know if I will be the experiencing the same performance on the LG G2, are you currently using a tweaked out Rom? are you experiencing any scroll lag?
Sorry to have bothered you, you have been very helpful, Have a nice day!

[Q] LG G2 vs Nexus 5, which one will be better for the same price?

Hello. I have an opportunity to take a 32gb model N5 or G2 for the same price. I need to know, which one will be better for the day use for my cases:
1) much phone calls (GSM + SIP calls)
2) music
3) e-reading
4) foto
5) web serfing.
Thank you.
P.S. I hope, people who will recommend me one or another phone, had the opportunity to test both devices.

G2 any given day of the week (I have both the devices). You'd want Nexus 5 only if you want Latest Official Stock Android and Butter Smooth UI Experience.

What do you mean?
For the same price G2 is better. You get a slightly bigger screen, better camera and better battery life,it's like a better nexus 5 if you install 4.4 kitkat rom in my opinion. In my country nexus 5 is 534$ and G2 for 574$ for 32gb price difference is low so I'm getting G2.

I mean LG G2 is better than the Nexus because of the Screen, Camera, Battery. But the UI is not as smooth as in Nexus 5 which has stock android. No matter which custom ROM you install on your G2, Official Stock Android on Nexus 5 can not be matched. There will always be some bug here n there & Void Warranty. (Please be advised, this is my personal opinion)
The G2 is much much better made, has a better camera, better battery, more features, and is more stable. The N5 has horrible build quality issues, I had to return 3 and rejected 2 more in the shop, all had screen faults and were different batches. The G2 is cheap because its not selling that well, the N5 is cheap because it is cheap.. and nasty.
The G2 can be made just as fast and smooth as the N5, if not more so, and seems to play games at a higher frame rate to. The N5 is just very badly optimised. The g2 out benches the N5, and while benchmarks dont tell the whole story they are an indication that something isnt right with the N5. I didnt find the N5 to be any faster, and it was often slower. There is still lag and micro stutter in scrolling widgets and chrome.
The N5 will have the newest version of Android first, but thats not really a big deal when it still has very few features. Kit Kat is little more than Jelly bean with a few tweaks anyway, its a minor update. The N5s main advantaged is ROM support, but do you really need 500 ROMs, instead of, say 30 for the G2, 490 of which is either copies of each other, or dont work properly?

I disagree on smoothness, and there is no such thing as 'Stock' Android on a retail device. Stock only exists in emulators, the Nexus runs Googles idea of retail custom Android. Each Nexus is a little different to the other and has its own customisations.

[Q] Why is gnex smoother than g2?

This is a pretty odd question, but i think I still need to ask because i'm so damn curious. And don't get me wrong, i am not saying g2 is not good enough. I have a G2 international, so love it. I am posting this only because i'm really dying for the hints. And everyone's perception of "smooth" is different, and i'm one of those who can easily tell the relatively smooth from smooth.
Lets get back to business anyway .As it's known that Gnex was released 2 years ago,i dont remember the exact day. Anyway, here's a very interesting thing that i've noticed.
I have a Gnex of which the screen was broken until i got it fixed 2 weeks ago. And with a new screen replaced , i felt so excited then flashed a new rom(latest slim rom) with the dirtyV kernel, then set it on art. Then came the MAGIC!!!! a lot of apps that were laggy had become super smooth, like the ios smooth. No matter how i slide back and forth, there was just no lag and everything worked so great. I just coulnt believe my eyes. So I thought it was the ART MAGIC that not only enabled the Android devices to load faster but also increases the smoothness expereince of thoses thir-party apps.
Then i tried those "super smooth apps" on my G2 , i was so looking forward to seeing that g2 would be comparable. Well, it wasnt, at all. So then again, i thought, it was the ART. So i turned it into ART. there was a slight difference between davilk and art on g2 that i could notice when sliding /swiping up and down, left and right. it was a bit smoother, but not as that smooth as Gnex is.
So i started thinking maybe it was the slimrom that did the ART MAGIC. So i flashed the slimRom(stable version), which was on my gnex.(ofc, i know not exactly the same). Then i try those smae apps again, it was ok smooth, but not that great. So i set it to art, then again, it was a little smoother, still, it was overshadowed by gnex.
So i am now wondering whether Gnex with the omap4460 and SGX540. along with the 720p screen is actually beating the G2 with 1080p screen?
Or it's because the optimization of the roms hasnt been there yet?
Even on stock my G2 runs circles around my Gnex. On a custom rom full 24A Madhi Rom my G2 is even smoother. Maybe you have too many apps running in the background on your G2? Also if it is stock the G2 has overaggressive thermal throttling which will slow the phone down. I'd say try the G2 again with a custom AOSP rom and see how it goes.
i full wiped then installed those Apps, so the system was clean.within the system UI, yes they are the same.both super fast. i am talking about the difference when you are sliding up and down on those custom APPs.gnex is obviously smoother, like butter smooth without any lag. you can try slim on your gnex and use art with the dirtyv kernel.and run some APPs like Facebook, twitter or what ever you can slide on. and you will see
what I mean. g2 is fast,it loads faster, but not smoother.I think it could have sth to do with the animation?

I‘ll try and see, but i guess it wont work~ so curious about the myth of my Gnex, what does the Slim probable art do to it? there must be some tricks! I will be killing to know that and put it to my G2
ART definitely helps but my G2 runs in circles around any GNex I've ever used even stock. On Mahdi it's even better, and with ART on I can't make it lag if I try. It's like 5S smooth. I guess everyone's perceptions will vary. Play around with it, maybe something is causing it to throttle for some reason.

I just switched from the GNEX to the LG G2 and I cannot disagree more with the OP.
The G2 is so much better. Just try comparing browsing the internet with the Chrome browser on the two smartphones. My GNEX struggled to run Chrome in a reasonably efficient manner, while the G2 just blazes.

it really depends on the rom. Here's the truth, if you flash the slim rom with the dirtyV kernel, then turn on the art mode. You'll see how fast your gnex go!NO kidding.
But g2 running with the Mahdi, ofc on art as well, the magic shows again! great!!!!
Thanks mate. Mahdi rom on art helps me beat my gnex again! it's really great!!!

Bloody G3 - I need to rant

I know this is going to sound very much like a first world problem, but this phone is frustratingly ****. It is easily the buggiest, slowest, most laggy phone I have ever had.
I have tried just about all the LG based ROMS, only to find that each one, although not buggy, are all laggy. The lag is so bad that it gives my old S2 on Gingerbread a run for its money. At least with Samsung phones, you could get rid of the lag by using a AOSP ROM and it would still be functional.
To solve the frustrating lag issue, I have installed a CM based ROM. At first I was delighted. The lag was gone. The phone was now comparable to my super fast Nexus 5. But after a few hours, I noticed the same bugs that every other CM based ROM user has. Today, I had to restart the phone six times FFS! It is a little more stable on 777 Kernel, but the same issues still persist.
Has anyone achieved bliss with this phone? Is there any ROMS, AOSP or LG based, that are fast, (Nexus 5 fast), and bug free?
Don't get me wrong, I love devs and the work they do. Without them, my old Galaxy phones, (S1, S2, S3, S4), would have been poo. My Nexus 5 would have been boring. (Stock android is meh). I just don't understand why this phone seems to have so many issues. Help me understand why it is so hard to develop a fast and reliable ROM for this phone. I know it isn't from a lack of trying. There is heaps of support and devs working on various ROMS in the G3 threads already and all of them are very talented.
Is it hardware based lag or is there something else inherently wrong with the phone?
Thanks for reading and offering any solutions. I don't want to list the ROMS I have tried, as it will seem like I am an ungrateful twat to those devs that worked so hard. Suffice to say, I have tried all the popular CM/AOSP and LG based ROMS.

Compared to what? Which other android phone have you used? In isolation, this phone is barely acceptable. Then, after you use a nexus, HTC or Sony phone, this phone is comparably slow. Almost unusable.
I can't bring myself to try stock again until someone who has other phones to base their claims on can confirm it is lag free.

Have you tried the usual tricks?
1. Swap out the stock launcher for something like Nova or Apex
2. Switch your keyboard to a 3rd party keyboard
While it does suffer from the random stutter, my phone is generally very zippy and does not lag.
Done all that. On stock based ROMS, stutter and lag is unbearable. My wife, nexus 5 user, even commented on how bad it is. I'm actually embarrassed to use the phone in front of people. I know it isn't a hardware issue, because AOSP ROMS are lag free, but not bug free.
Yeah, the phone is nowhere near as quick as a Nexus. The notification bar is also **** compared to stock Lollipop. There are a few tricks I use to improve performance on a stock rom:
1) Turn off throttling/thermal daemon via the service menu.
2) I use setCPU to set the phone to use the "performance" scheduler whenever the screen is on, locking it at 2.5Ghz.
Still isn't perfect, but it helps substantially. Obviously this is in addition to changing the launcher.
It's just one of those things. As you say, CM12 just isn't stable and worryingly seems to be going backwards, getting less and less stable with each passing nightly. The camera is also completely crap on AOSP roms. Nexus devices are great but the N5 is old and the N6 is too big and expensive. The S5 lags too, and while Note 4 is supposed to be good, but I simply won't believe that Touchwiz lag is gone without seeing it with my own eyes. Even if it has gone, Touchwiz remains the ugliest skin I've ever seen. Sony phones are nice, but they aren't packaged anywhere near as tightly as the G3, which is it's biggest strength: 22mm shorter than an iPhone 6+, with the same size screen. That's impressive. HTC's are just ridiculously large for a given screen size. The 1+1 is old now, and doesn't support all LTE bands used in the UK.
There is no perfect phone. Whichever you choose, there are compromises to be made. However IMHO the G3 strikes the best compromise available today, at least once running the latest Lollipop build and with the tweaks I mentioned above applied.
Had most 2014 flagships and G3 is deff fav so far, didnt have KK as updated to LP out the box had little lag after ota but common just needed a factory reset and all good since
Just a tip you can use on any android phone, go to settings, developer options, and set all the animations to 0.5x. This drastically reduces the time the animations take, and it gives a very snappy experience. It makes a LOT of difference, trust me.
No lag whatsoever here. Im running Chupachups newest rom with rin kernel. I've previously owned htc one, lg g2, xperia z1 and this phone definitely outperforms them all.
Ive owned the Xperia Z1, HTC One M7, and tbh id rate this better than both, i would like the battery life to be better my Z1 was amazing for that buh im custom stock rom and i dont get lag, everything is as it should be.

Because LL is still unstable and buggy? And so is any rom based on it?..
Stock firmware sucks because of LG's software - it's very badly written. Almost as bad as touchwiz is. (I used SGS3, trust me on that one...)
AOSP/CM based firmwares are better, but they still suffer due do LL newness. Wait till android 5.1, things may become better.
There is also a hardware issue: unbelievably bad heat management. They used 8974ac, but had not made any cooling system. No radiators, no heat spread throughout the case, and it's facing LCD panel - which is a very bad radiator. GG WP, throttling kick in, phone starts to lag, etc etc etc.
I think there may be problem with your unit... Try to send it back to get a replacement or have it serviced.

I agree that most of the stock LG-G3 roms, Lollipop/Kitkat, if not rooted and without any mods, LAG is unavoidable. The case is, some people can't root their phones and most of them will try searching why G3 stock rom is lagging... if I'm one of them and I happen to see this post, I would feel bad and feel stupid at the same time why I spend money buying a crappy phone.
Well anyways, try Crash Rom v2.0. It is a stock based ROM like chupachups. The animation is not as fluid as CM but I won't say that it's lagging. Compared to CM, I have not yet encountered any bugs and mostly the camera is better. If you're interested you can also downgrade the resolution to 1080p, this will enhance your g3, 3d and 2d graphics performance.
Hi im all so on lollipop 5.0 updated out of the box and its all good maybe some lag not much to notice. Still no root method yet for stock lollipop 5.0 and i dont want to downgrade to kk so il have patience and wait for new root method for me g3
Wow, I went from the nexus 5, to the htc m8, to the g3 all in year. My advice, play with this one to get the phone lag gone. This by far is the best. Like a previous person said, turn off animations and change the launcher.

Can't be an issue with the phone, as it is lag free with CM based ROMS.

Already done all that. Animations are turned off, launcher animations are set to lightning fast, CPU throttling is turned off. I've tried all the tricks in the book. Fact is, LG based software is crap, just like Samsung.
So far today, the lock-screen has only frozen on me four times, which is good.
I'm not sure if I'd rather put up with a laggy phone or a buggy phone.
My phone is currently on V20h. Apart from the occasional Home launcher crash, I've not had any lag that I notice of. The last time there was any lag was on V10i. My phone is rooted but is not running any mods.
Prior to this, I've had the Note 3 and Xperia S. Compared to the G3, I would say that the smoothness is at the very least, on par with the Note 3 running on stock.
I've seen people complaining about the G3 being laggy too. Is your phone by any chance the 2 GB RAM version?
My phone is the 2gb version, but I always have at least close to 300mb free. Sometimes I have over 1gb free. Not that it should matter though, as I have read on numerous places that the 3gb version lags too, and that both phones are very close on performance. The extra 1gb of RAM is negligible.
Just flashing Crash ROM now. I think I'm going to regret it though, as I much prefer the look of AOSP anyway.
Ah crap. Just as I flash the ROM, I read that the dev is stopping support for our device. Based on the comments, it looks like a promising ROM.

Is Cm12 Bug Free On Lg G2?

Hi everybody. I was planning to replace my Nexsu 4 with an LG G2, and since I really like the pure android I will be (probably!) flashing CM on it. Now I am new to this world so please be gentle with me I want to know a few things:
1) Is the UI on LG G2 sluggish and slow? especially after installing apps?
2) Is the stable version of CM for LG G2 (I guess it is CM12 right now) bug free? (I have heard stories about battery drain and stuff with CM12).
3) Is the stock Lollipop stable? Do you recommend I upgrade OTA from KK to LP?
Thanks!
I came from Nexus 4 to G2 6 months ago.
1) LG UI is fast on 4.4.2, and about 20% slower (MY opinion) on 5.0.2 because 5.0.2 sucks :/ (5.0.2 was slow on my old Nexus 4)
2) CM is not 100% stable, if i recall correctly there are minor bugs that occur from time to time, lag in Google Play Music, DT2W works a bit worse than LG roms, also Camera is a bit worse than LG rom
3) Stock Lollipop is stable, you can OTA if your network carrier has the update (if not you will have to use LG PC Suite or flash KDZ image)
If you REALLY need stock Android you should get Nexus 5. I chose G2 because I was so mad after having Nexus 4 camera and audio playback quality, i simply refused to get Nexus 5. G2 has amazing sound (HD sound driver) especially if you have 50EUR+ headphones and a great camera
Also its questionable when and will G2 get official 5.1.1 or 6.0, the G3 only 2-3 weeks ago got 5.1.1
Thanks a lot! You answered all my question. Let me ask you a few more since you are the right person First of all, my Nexus 4 is amazing and works perfectly. My only complain (just like you) would be the camera (I only listen to audiobooks, so audio quality is not really an issue for me). Also I thought the battery on the G2 is above average (correct me if I am wrong).
1) How would you compare the G2 UI (4.4.2) with Nexus 4 (on 5.1.1)? Is it the same speed or you feel a lag?
2) When you say camera on CM12 is not as good as stock rom, do you mean the camera features? cause I know that the G2 camera has many features. Or you mean like the image quality with the same settings on the stock is better that CM?
3) In general, if you would choose again, now that you know how is the quality of Nexus 5, would you choose it against G2?
I was thinking of getting the N5 too, but the camera and the battery life on the G2 are tempting honestly. I am ok with 4.4.2 and I will stay on that if I think it performs better than 5.0.2. I think I will avoid CM though since I am afraid the headache does not worth it for me.
UI of G2 is not slow, it is pretty fast also on Lollipop. Only issue with official lollipop is memory leak.. You have to restart your device every day or you will suffer from launcher redraws.
Battery life on CM is worse than on stock. Also quality of photos is lower + G2 doesnt support Camera2 API so you don't have any advanced camera features on CM.
LG G2 offers GREAT performance for price, it has much better hardware than Nexus 5 but I still prefer Nexus 5 because of the software.

1) G2 UI (4.4.2) is as fast as Nexus 4 on 5.1.1. However, G2 UI at 4.4.2 has no material design. You can check it on youtube
2) The latest CM12.1 (not CM12) has a better camera, but yeah less features, and the pics are sometimes blurry (15% chance).
3) Ahh, I don't know, i really want 6.0 from Nexus 5, but N5 has a worse screen, only 2300mah, 8mp camera......i would get a G2, but this time in black color
Thank you guys! I will keep an eye on both G2 and N5. If G2 gets the update to 5.1.1 or 6.0 I will definitely go for it. If not, I have to decide which one to go, G2 or N5.
