Improving touchscreen sensitivity - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had been having issues with my phone's touch screen sensitivity until a few weeks ago. I assumed it was the screen protector, but I found that there were days where I had great success. But there were other days where it took several touches to get any thing to register. I even tried one of those apps that shows where your touches are. So many touches never even showed up.
But alas...I found a fix. A good one. And I don't mind doing it again every couple of days. It is a little unorthodox, but it has worked on my tablet and two other devices. Worth trying if you are having issues with any of your devices.
Preheat a skillet on the low side of medium. Take two slices of rye bread, with the seeds, and lightly butter them (just a little on one side of each slice). Take about 1/4 pound of thinly sliced pastrami (beef worked for me, but you can try turkey at your own risk) and pile it onto a plate. Do not put it on a napkin! Microwave that pastrami for 30 seconds. Place one slice of bread in the skillet, butter side down, and then a slice of Swiss cheese on that bread. Pile the preheated pastrami on that, then another slice of Swiss, then the other slice of bread, butter side up this time. After just a minute or two, carefully flip it all over to brown the other side of the sandwich. (Optional: Pour yourself a homebrew) When both sides of the sandwich are browned, eat it. DO NOT USE A NAPKIN WHILE YOU EAT IT. A napkin will make all of this for naught.
Now go play with your tablet. And use it to learn how to make your own beer at home. You have earned it, because you have corrected your touch screen issues.
Cheers!

[DISCUSSION] The Desire-Z keyboard hinge thread - how loose is yours?

I know there are plenty of threads about G2 hinge issues, but I'd like to know about your Desire-Z keyboard hinges now that it has shipped.
I've just received my second Desire-Z this morning and it's probably worse than the first one. If pick up the phone, absolutely horizontal, from a table just by holding the upper section, the keyboard just falls half-open. Surely it shouldn't be like this? Here's a quick youtube video I took of my first phone:
Just wondering if I've been really unlucky, or are they basically all like this? I really hope not...
Andre
Mine does exactly the same. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but I'm not very happy with it.
My other concern is that the screen wobbles back and forth when I have the phone closed if I tap on the left and right edges.
I think this is probably a design flaw rather than a specific device problem. You'll probably find they're all the same
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Cant quite tell what the angle is in the video.
If I pick up mine by just the top piece then it droops, but doesn't slide out.
If I hold it upside-down by the base it droops, but can't slide.
Whenever I pick up the phone though I hold it by the base, so in normal use it's perfectly fine.
I'm basically assuming that the spring should be just strong enough for the phone to hold itself together (i.e. without the keyboard dropping away at all) when it is gently lifted up from a flat surface. That's the benchmark I would want to see anyway, and neither of mine will do that.
I might take this up with HTC and see what their view on it is - I just hope they don't do an Apple and patronisingly say "you're holding it the wrong way".
Andre
I've just sent off an email to superEtrader asking for a refund as I'm not happy.
I hope they take it back without any hassle since their website says I can't return it if its been opened. Someone on here kindly pointed out the Distance Selling Regulations say I can open it and play with it (I have the PDF stored on my PC!), but I don't want to have that sort of hassle.
my phone has the same problem as the video.
Also, the screen slides down when im lying down, holding the phone by the keyboard.
My phone isnt quite a loose as in the video, but it does droop if I pick it up by the top section rather than the base & also if I am lying down and hold by keyboard it will start to shut... I kinda expected to have a loose hinge based on reviews that I had seen for G2 & at this point its only a very minor niggle, so I wont do any return until I find out there are Desire Zs out there that actually have a firm hinge.
On another note, I noticed yesterday that the black backing of the keyboard is a bit bubbly.. Im hoping that the backing wont start coming away down the road... but I guess only time will tell.
I found it hard to do what was shown on video, I never grabbed phone like this before. It never opened on its own even slightly. Also owned TP2 and never held it by the screen. I dont think people would actually ever hold it like that.
No offense to anyone, I just dont see any issues with my hinge. I know it opens when I hold it like on video or upside down, but If I havent read some posts, I would never try it.
This is just my personal opinion on the "hinges"
The design is for the way we hold and use our phones.. I feel for you bro, but noone holds their phone at the angle your showing this at..
I have had no problem at all yet with the everyday use of this beast)
JD
Honestly, at first it bothered, but really, it really starts to make sense for me now how it acts. If our hinge would be stronger, it'd be more difficult to open it and might have us actually break it.
Also, when I hold it while typing, I instinctively put my index fingers along the side of the keyboard/screen (once it is opened) and type with my thumbs. That way, it's impossible for the screen to fold back in closed position.
When I pick up my phone, I really don't pick it up by only one of the parts (screen/base). It's actually quite heavy at 180g and if I don't want to drop it, I rather pick up nicely and firmly.
So, really, after 4 days with my phone, the thing that bothers me more now isn't the screen, but the weight difference between my old Samsung Galaxy S (with gel back) and the Z.
Actually, funny anecdote, while playing Angry Birds, I actually opened the keyboard so I had a better grip on the phone.

I think I'll just keep mine until we get confirmation that better-designed Desire Zs have been produced. The replacement is from HTC and not my supplier, so I should be able to do it at any time during the next 2 years... right?
Mine is pretty solid - I even text in bed and it doesn't fall. I have opened the keyboard once or twice by accident, which is quite funny..
Desire Z on Bell Canada Hinge problem
I have already gone through two DZ's and both have the "weak" hinge. Thankfully mine does not do what is shown in the Video in post #1, thats definitely a defect in my opinion. Just to compare notes on a relative basis here is what mine does.
When the phone is closed I turn it sideways (landscape) lift it from the bottom and then press on the left and right edges with my thumbs. The screen snaps nicely into place. If I then grap the device by the top two corners of the screen and lift it straight up and hold it perfectly horizontally the keyboard drops down. However, if I lift it up at a slight angle the keyboard remains "attached" to the screen. It seems as though there is a magnet of some kind holding it in place.
I instinctively hold it with forefingers and thumb to type much as I do on my Motorola Milestone which slides straight up and down and has no "hinge".
As for lying on my back and typing in Bed if I just hold the bottom portion keyboard along then the screen drops down. HOWEVER that is an extremely awkward way to type for anyone I would imagine.
The question is, did HTC design it to work in this way knowing that people "instinctively" do these types of actions in this way?? I am not sure they conduct such a detailed ergonomic study. There are people that have no hinge issues at all, but unless they apply specific tests as I did here it would be difficult to know if they are experiencing similar problems. If they are doing what comes naturally and holding it as nature intended then they would not deem that there are any problems.
Just my two cents.
This is worse than the "Is my trackpad wobbling?!" threads on CrackBerry. It's supposed to be loose so you can open it with one finger, according to HTC. If you don't like it, take it back (you can definitely get a refund, since it's only been out like 4 days or whatever) and get a new phone. Seriously. You want a stiff slide, get a Milestone, then you have nothing to complain about.
Bought 2 today, they're (identically!) quite loose. I was really worried before buying that I'm gonna get the 'loose one' but to be honest it's not an issue as it's a very weird way to hold your phone and like others said you instinctively hold the device with your thumb and index fingers as that's where they end up when you open the phone. Furthermore, if opened and held vertically just by the bottom, the top part stays in place and only drops down at ~40 deg angle, so unless you text a lot in bed while holding the phone upside down and holding it just by the bottom bit, you won't have a problem. If I lift it up like in the video (it's actually quite an effort) the parts will separate.
Yeah, mine is the same, but dont know why people are making such a big fuss on it, why not for example make a big fuss on the speaker quality instead?
Yeah the speaker is ****, its the one thing that is crap with this phone...

Did you ever think choosing a phone would be like choosing a girlfriend. At least with the Desire Z you can test it out in the shop to see if its loose before getting it home and having a nasty surprise lol XD
I never knew I had a hinge problem until I watched the videos. Some people have way to much time on their hands.

[HOWTO] Salvage your device after dropping it in a bocket of LATEX Wall Paint.

This is my first post and after weeks of enjoying especially the development forum and now, admittedly suffering from OCFD, I felt it was time to contribute aswell. If not in a more unconventional way.
With the pressure of my girl's first pregnancy coming to an end soon I've been forced to divide my time between flashing great and exciting ROM's and renovating my house. Yesterday whilst painting my walls I was also on call, so my trusted divice was in my pocket.
Then the unthinkable happened...
My almighty Galaxy S somehow managed it's speedy ass out of my pocket and fell into a full bucket of thick, latex paint...
So, here it is;
"How to salvage your device after dropping it an a bucket of Latex wall paint":
- don't hesitate (even if you dropped it in your freshly filled toilet bowl): PULL IT OUT !!!!
- wipe of worst paint with everything that comes in handy (new baby clothes will do nicely)
- PULL THE BATTERY AND SIMCARD
- Now comes the worst bit; the paint being waterbased means; best cleant in water; flush of paint with running WATER.....
- The horror bits are obviously the micro usb port, the speakers, camera...
- Dry with Airdryer if in posession of wife/girlfriend/mother/sister, if not: use heater instead.
- soak the device in WD-40 spray or contact spray, force spraying into the speakers and mic/USB-ports
- Let dry...
- Start praying......
At this moment it's worth noting that I've been poised with indecision in the Vodafone shop between the Desire, iPhone and the Almighty Galaxy S where, apart from the ridiculous TW/Samsung crap, the apparant poor built quality left me doubting...
I thought the nokia 3310 (Yes, I'm that old) and the 6610 (the Great) were the best built phones ever, surviving multiple drops in toilets, submerging during sailing, several liters of beer accidentally spilling on it....Behold the Almighty:
Shaking and trembling, this morning, I continued on my seemingly impossible quest:
- insert SIM card
- insert battery
- Power up the device (all the time, the praying continues)
And there it was.... The beautiful S... And in merely seconds my JPA/doc/Kalpic 7.6.2 ROM unleashed the full beauty again of this great..great device...
As Julie Andrews once sang:
"The hills are alive, with the sound of Music"
grtz
il Grande
What was the color? Me thinks you could have just removed the paint from the screen and ports, and leave the rest, for a certainly unique Galaxy S.
Greate story! Good to hear that my phone can survive such an accident, but I hope it won't happen to me
What an inspiring story. It moves me to see how people with disabilities always find a way to cope with their imperfections.
Now all you need to find is a way to get your phone back when you lose it somewhere.. again, and again.
By the way the n95 you soaked in tea did not survive.

Hello Ketelbin"K"ie
1. I only mentioned the solid Nokia's
2. ..and still... even after I soaked it in Latex, it outrules your amish HTC Desire
Shouldn't you be working?
Even though its working again, the innards will be rusting away at an accelerated rate due to all the hydrophilic electrolyte salts dried up on your circuitry. So cross your fingers and hope it lasts until your next phone,
My wife dropped a Samsung Omnia 2 in the toilet last week, and was able to revive it by removing the battery immediately and with an air dryer and a lot of praying

One hand operability

Just to quell any concerns of soon-to-be owners: It can be done. It can be used with one hand. I'm not a giant (about 6'1", slightly above average) and I'm coming from a 4S, so I'm not used to huge phones. You literally just have to grab it differently than you would a tiny phone.
I don't understand why all reviewers grab this phone like a murder weapon, and grip the crap out of it - and then try to use their thumbs to grab the adjacent corner of the screen. Wtf? Of course that's not gonna work. I can reach the top corner, but I splay my fingers across the bottom of the phone for better control. I'm sure the people who really love this phone and use it as their daily drivers figured that out within the first day and are happy as can be.
Long live the big screen.
I agree, in the beginning I found that it was a bit difficult to handle even with my large hands but as soon as I got used to holding it "like I'm supposed to", which took me like ten minutes, using it with one hand has been a breeze!
Now it feels weird to hold smaller phones, I tend to try to clench them with just my palm.
Hahaha that's exactly what I was doing earlier. They do start to feel like tiny toys
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
The size is not a problem for me using it with one hand, the only issue is my hand (or rather pinky) starts to hurt after a while holding it lol. Got used to the SGS2 too much I guess

i think i may have to improve my dexterity on this one, lol.
But the thing is with smaller phone I can grip the other side with the 4 other fingers, while with my Note if I want to comfortably use it with one hand, my other 4 fingers can only slightly grab the back of the phone to allow my thumb to move comfortably (that is can reach the other side of the screen with my thumb), and I'm scared of dropping Note holding it like that

I have smallish hands but I can easily operate it with 1 hand but the 'safety level' of operating the device with my small hands is close to 0. Soon after I switched to land scape mode with the use of ADW EX and use the phone almost exclusively in landscape mode but with 2 hands mostly.
I don't really need it but people with one hand issues should try button saviour on market.
Sent from my Galaxy Note using xda premium
Haha yeah I know what you mean, I would say my safety level drops quite a bit. Walking around outside and holding it like that for a prolonged time wouldn't be the smartest thing to do..
And I don't know if it matters, but I bought the white one and what was supposed to be a glossy, slippery back actually provides a good amount of friction (for whatever reason) when I hold it.
I just bought the zagg shields for this, to hopefully add to that friction and not take away from it. I'd hate to put this in a case and have it be even fatter :/
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Oh yeah, and in landscape, you can pretty much only hold it. That definitely requires two hands for input
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Agreed, had it for a week now. All my typical things I use to do: one hand, in pocket, holding on to other things and phone, watching yottube in bed while falling asleep, music listening while doing other things so loose and simple touches - all work fine -- many better. There is something amazing that the larger screen ( see more, more is big, less zooming in and out) along with the real estate for interacting that this phone gives you - that is a game changer. Also the voice input tools are huge ( vlingo and gvoice) , work great with this build and dual processor -- so I am doing much more with voice ( most of my email writing , commands to get stuff or do stuff). And of course the best is the spen - its precision and accuracy are so MUCH better than touch. Touch is great for fast and casual, but sometimes you are sitting ont he couch or desk or standing leaning against a wall where you plan to do over a minute of browsing, scheduling, email answering - I find the pen rocks a these times. In fact see this page on xda, look at the smallest icons you want to hit ( next page, ...) I do not have to zoom for any of them, I can hit the all (like 1 pixel accuracy with the spen) - saves me huge wasted zooms and moves and misses. Love this phone - again it is a gamer changer.
I didn't have a problem using the Note with only one hand. But the problem is that if you're walking then it might drops easily. Si I found a great compromise, I bought a silicone cover which adds more grip. And it saved me once after I dropped my Note being on my bike. The Note didn't get any damage whatsoever.

Definitely can be used with one hand

I'm 5ft 11 and don't have particularly big hands. I have no problems using the Note one handed.
Like some others, it's more about adjusting your grip and supporting rather than strangling the phone! It is a little tricky to text while walking etc but it's do-able.
I've actually started finding other phones with their tiny screens and keyboards difficult to use! ;-)

Uncomfortable to hold for long periods

Anyone else notice this or is it just me? I need to get a cover for it and that will probably help a lot. It's the shape of the edges, its like they are designed to mess up my fingers. The slick back makes it harder to grip and therefore I have to hold it tighter than I would say my old kindle, thus making the ergonomics worse.

Well IMO I like the way they integrated the actual cover into the tablet itself, it makes a good stand for watching videos and stuff or playing games if you have a gamepad. As for benefits...hmm, protecting the screen may be one. I haven't seen a scratch and I've owned it for a month and a half now (my nexus 7 got hairline scratches in the first week -_-). The only problem is ergonomics, if you hold it incorrectly it makes it uncomfortable to hold after long periods of use. Overall I think its worth the buy.

Thanks very much for that... Really helped.
I just ordered a case that's designed for the HP slate extreme. Cost me $12. Its a stand and cover and should fix the uncomfortable ergonomics. I'll post a review when it gets here tomorrow.

Adding a decal skin to the face and back have helped immensely. Ofc, there's nothing out there that's a custom fit for the Tegra Note, so I just used a the cheapest Nexus 7 skin I could find and it's an incredibly ill fit, but it's an improvement. This tablet is really heavy as ****. I wonder who the genius engineer is that wanted a big magnet on the back cover.

I have had no issues except to get used to holding it when playing games.... but then I got around it but standing it and putting two fingers either side inside the triangular flap where it stands and rest the two outside fingers on either hand around the triangular flap.... It made it loads easier and comfrtable to play :victory:

Maybe you won't experience stiffness (tendonitis?) in the fingers. I didn't start to really notice this was going to be a big issue until probably a month into owning it. I'm sure there are other factors involved other than just the tablet, but I can say that I've never experienced tendonitis in my fingers before.
As far as photos, my skin looks like crap. It's all off center. If you're still interested I can post later when I get a new skin and cut it up & apply properly. I think the skin on the glass border shifts around a bit.

Dont Put Your Z3 On A Smooth Surface

I got my new Xperia Z3 today and after it fell off the table twice in half an hour I wondered why. I discovered that the Z3 has a very smooth finish and it creates some type of static electricity pocket and makes the device move if it is put on a smooth surface life a smooth table with a plain peace of paper. this video is not a trick. I kept the screen on so you can see that I am not calling the phone on vibrate.
Probably you should level your table.
Glass is smooth and slippery?! I never would have guessed
Nothing new really. Must have been a slip system somewhere in there.
It is true. I can confirm this...as the fact that I broke my Z3 screen by it moving on it's own....cursed fate.....
I spent my money for a new phone to replace it. Went and tried out several phones...nothing could play music as good as Z3. I ended up with Z3 tablet compact. Tmobile US networks is working out flawlessly.
Buy a cover for your Z3. It deserves it....don't be like me :good: :crying:
I have seen this happen a few times to my phone too!
lol thought I imagined it as well... guess not
After hearing of the guy whose phone slid off while ringing and shattered, a while back I have become a bit more careful. I guess we can't take it for granted that we can leave it anywhere lol. A few must suffer so the rest can realize.
Thankfully I have no damage to my phone but when it first happened in was very freaked out. I have tested it out on other surfaces and maybe it's just conincedence but most of the
Surfaces in my house move my phone. Especially my material couch.
This happened to me and the back glass panel is absolutely destroyed.

That's true, Z3 back is ridiculously slippery, that's why I bought a foil for the back, it's still slippery but no way near the level it was without it
Yes that's true!
mine also tried to take its own life a few nights ago by diving from the bedside table.
It’s ok, no physical damage, but it's somehow psychological affected and cannot be left alone on any smooth surface...

I noticed this on the first day I got the phone. I put it on my bed side drawer as I was about to sleep, I close my eyes, next thing I hear is "THWACK!!!". Open my eyes, phone is on the floor, thankfully, no damage. I though maybe something had caused that, then another day, same sequence of events, phone survived again. I wasn't sure initially becuase I didn't have this issue with my Z1 or Z2, so I put the phone on the drawer again and watched and lo and behold, the phone was slowly but surely doing the Moonwalker. Now when I put the phone on "suspicious" surfaces, I always make sure it's in it's slip in case.
I noticed on a table at work. The table is a little bent and on some spots, the phone slides alone
Same here. It's like a hovercraft. Bought a Case and now it's safe.
