290 OTA available! - Xperia Z1 General

Hi guys, just thought I would inform you that the 290 OTA is out in the USA. I have a c6903 that was imported here, SO I do not know if the phone has a location set or if its just going by my carriers connectivity, which is StraightTalk.
Should I update OTA and see if it preserves root?

You can't do OTA if rooted. Sony has taken care of that. OTA will fail if you try.

I guess I should read the forums a bit better. Yes, the update did fail.
I thought sony sort of "encouraged" rooting.
Anyways, I wasted space on the forum.. =(

Strange beause it worked for me. I have C6903 unbranded (Romania).
I flashed 534, rooted, OTA-updated to 257 (root was kept)
Today I received the notification that an update to 290 is available.
So I successfully updated to 290 via OTA. Root is lost though

I did OTA update and root is survived but partial root only. System files are write protected. If you want fully working root, you need to unlock the bootloader (at least for now).

I removed root and couldn't update OTA. Had to resort to the pc companion. I hope this helps in the development of a solution to get a 4.3 OTA root.

We have to detect which firmware could handle OTA update with root.
Same thing happened on some 257 firmware but...
Sony fixed exploit space that devs used to root and even if you find firmware (like @ktxed) that can be updated on rooted devices - you'll have only partial root.
And that means - you'll be able to flash everything through recovery but as soon as OS boot - you can't write to system anymore.

I noticed partial root stops working after a while.I flashed custom rom on Lb.

Just received .434. Netherlands, unlocked device.
im new to Sony devices, coming from Samsung Galaxy S3. Is it ok to update OTA when rooted? Bootloader is still locked and im on stock rom. On sammy devices i recall some issues with accepting OTAs when rooted.

The ota will work, however I'm unsure whether you'll retain root.

So far I've only lost root when doing a PC companion update. OTA has always retained root so far for me.

Does this update is rolling via ota?

My Z is SIM free but I still have the bootloader locked!
Sent from my C6603
That's the thing, if the OTA update patches the exploit used to root it then you won't be able to re root. But as Rashkae said OTA updates seem to retain root. Worst case scenario, flash back to .350 with flashtool and root again

Update has a baseband and kernel update so don't expect it to come OTA.
You lose root after updating, but the current root exploit (for locked bootloaders) still works. Just re-root after updating
Re: new firmware arrived for xperia z c6603
So, any news from sony what's new in this update?
I assume it takes care of those sudden deaths... anything else?, cause i have this bug when i turn on the wifi, it continues to use 2g/3g network even it's connected to wifi.
It's not a big deal as i have to disable data before connecting to wifi(i'll rather have this than wifi dropouts. ), but still would like to get this fixed
Updated to .434 , I'm in Spain and OTA did'n find nothing, only with Companion.
.434 reloads again all GAPPS, Sony Boatware, Mc Affee, etc.
Same rooting files works in this one
Stamina fails again
Titanium Backup works fine, no restarts after deleting system apps

Vodafone UK update to N7105XXDMC3 (rooted)

Just updated from n7100xxdmb2 to n7100xxdmc3 this morning, well the update appeared last night but I had low battery!
My Note 2 is rooted and shows as modified (stock firmware) and when I check for updates it refuses 'Your device has been modified...'
So I'm surprised it offered me the update. Anyone else had this update? Anything useful in it?!
Thanks.

My update give me lte. Not sure about yours? But if I was you I would use triangle away unroot it. Update it then root with framaroot
Or just download the update and use mobile odin

Thanks for the reply dazza, mine's not an LTE handset so I guess the update won't give me that :silly:
I did get the update downloaded from vodafone automatically, even though my phone is rooted, I was just surprised as I didn't think rooted handsets got updates.

14.3.A.0.761 ota update!

I did not update yet cuz I don't wanna lose root. I'm using [NUT]'s package.

You can't update through OTA anyway if you're already on a rooted phone. I'm also on NUT's rooted firmware and received the OTA notification and the update won't work due to root or custom recovery.
So what if I want to update?? Can I? (rooted xperia z1...)
Have also just got the update through, it's a very small update, kind of reluctant to update, but it's so small I can't see it removing root either way.
I'm in the UK and am on EE. Running Monx's rom 6.0.3
Tried it, wouldn't install, cannot verify.
Need to get rid of this bloody notification now.

You won't lose after OTA
Just to share - I came from NUT's 757 rom updated via OTA to 761 and I did not lose root. :good: Hope this helps.
PS. I didn't notice any difference maybe will check it out for a few more days
How did you do that...... It says "can't verify" when I try to install

Good update, this fixed the battery drain issue that I had with the previous firmware
If you are rooted using NUT's package then you can update following this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53037526&postcount=114
Just clear the icon, it's not going to be installable if youre on a custom rom, so monx = no, i'm guessing most of the other rom's will be the same too.
Just go to settings / apps / all / update service and update centre and stop notifications.
Gets rid of it but obviously the update is still there.

did you convert SuperSu in a system app (with the special function of SuperSu app) before the OTA firmware update?
First we get told that this is an operator specific update for France and China, then there's a certified update ending with 769, and now we get this 761 update worldwide.
What's going on?

Always assume that any OTA or official update will break root and there is some risk that an update will actually brick your phone.
You should also assume that any OTA or official updates will prevent any known root methods from working in the future.
In short, if you are rooted don't take an OTA and if you think you want to root in the future still don't take an OTA.
One of the first things I do when I root a device is disable the OTA update mechanism so I'll never even see the notification.
Yes, the the new firmware update did break my root. I used towelroot. I have a galaxy tab 4 10.1 sm-t530nu.
Can you guys tell me whats the changelog? I dont want to lose root, but its worth it if its a major update.

I updated my SM-T335 today. Changelog just said "Stability improvement"
I just bought this tablet today....didn't even think about the update...now I have to wait to root.
Not necessarily.
Im working on reverting my 10.1 to the prior firmware version. I just need to confirm that this is the appropriate firmware
PDA: T530NUUEU1AND4
OK, I used odin and restored the previous firmware. Ran towelroot again, and all is back to the way it was before the mistake in software update.
I was able to freeze LocalFOTA.apk but these were not there to freeze:
Kies.apk
SyncmIDM.apk
SyncmIDS.apk

Rooted but received ota update??

Hi guys i have g900f in the UK and i am on KK 4.4.2 Rooted with stock rom. Today i received a software update message, i went to software update and its showing me a update package of 194mb and its giving me the option to download it however i am rooted with towel root and knox 0x0.
Any ideas of this update? If i do it, would it wipe away my root? I have left a screen shot below. Thanks
Sent from my SM-G900F using xda premium
In all probability it will update the device to Lollipop. .....and that WILL remove your root access.
The only thing that is preventing me from being certain of the fact is the size of the download....194 Mb is very small considering a full LP firmware is somewhere in the region of 1.36 Gb.....
Do you have a reason for staying on KK or is it just that you haven't had an opportunity to upgrade to LP before today?
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
There is no Lollipop within Europe, until beginning of May.
Any phones it should have all latest security patches at any cost.

I like Kitkat as you can root it with Towel and have Knox 0x0. My warranty expires in August, so i am generally waiting for the official Marshmallow update, then i will upgrade the software to it.
Its werid how i got that update notification, because i restarted my phone earlier and checked again for updates, and it told me my device is modified and cannot update now. Maybe it was a glitch, but i am certainly not updating it to lollipop

Yes if you have root access every one remotely has root access to your own phone too.
This is not a perfect world.

While I am just a industrial electrician playing with motors , cables, and electronics, even so I am also aware of what is: Remote hijacking of a Smartphone.
Samsung security patches and lollipop (By Samsung) both are additional added shields against all sort of hijacking, due apps, remote access or direct unauthorized access.
