I happen to agree, based on the evidence in the half-dozen more threads here discussing that same thing. It'll be pretty easy to determine if that's your issue...try running the phone without the card in it, and see if that makes a difference.
Now, technically, I believe the issue is related to the card, but may not be beacuse of the card itself....it seems like the phone chokes when there's a lot of files on the card and it has to index them. People who install apps to the card seem to experience this (or at least report it) more than people who don't, which would support that theory because installing apps to the card fills it up with files faster (per MB of space) than even moving a bunch of music might...and a large number of files to index could lead to this kind of behavior (theoretically) as opposed to just a card that was "full" by occupied volume. Again, you can test this by starting with an empty card, then filling it up gradually, and seeing if the issue appears at some point in the process.
In my opinion, the commonly-seen lagging issues in these phones may often (but not always) be casued by a combination of factors:
-class-2 card
-high file count on the card
-sense's (and maybe winmo's..?) constant re-indexing of card contents
Now, some people have reported that copying the card's contents to your desktop, reformatting the card, then copying the files back on to it resolves the issue for them. So, bottom line...who knows?
EDIT: here's maybe a better explanation (by example) of what I'm trying to say about the card being "full"...
Example 1: you have a handful of .mkv files ripped straight from bluray on your card, ~2GB each....putting 7 of those files on your (16GB) card would almost fill the available volume. But, since that's a small number of files, it wouldn't take the phone long to index them at all, despite the card being almost completely full. (again, my guess)
Example 2: you install a bunch of apps (say, 30-40), and almost all of them to the card. Even though those apps won't eat a whole lot of space on the card total (far less than 1GB probably), each one can have potentially dozens of individual files installed for it. In this case, the card wouldn't show as being very full (just from the apps anyway), but the large number of files would potentially cause any indexing of the card to slow down in proportion. (guess what...still just my guess) And, a lower-class card could contribute to the slowness in this case too...that bottleneck could multiply the effects.
It may help some people out to hide the program folders on the card from indexing, just to reduce the file count that has to be sorted through, but that's just an idle thought that just occured to me.

Actually, no...I've had absolutely zero issues with this phone, and I've had it (and used it constantly) for two weeks as of tonight. No freezing, no lag, nada. I don't keep a ton of stuff on my memory card (~15 mp3's, 4 .avi's, and 30-40 archived cabs, small handful of other junk), and I don't install any apps there (though I haven't bothered to remove the stock stuff put there by tmo).
I experience this lag, and altough i kinda agree with the card being the issue at the same time i am kind of hesitant. See the Card is a Class 2 which in theory will have a throughput of about 2mb a sec right? Mine peaks out at about 2.8mbps..... to me thats fast.... so i am not sure but i feel like the choke point is porbably in hardware. Again this is probably all bogus lol.
Like i said i do have this problem too, and i even reformatted my SD card and loaded all my files again. The problem still persist, and i really only notice it when i am listening to music via usb in my car. Also when i am scrolling through the pictures in my gallery(pics are in the SD).
Hope this makes atleast a bit of sense lol.
Disable Document Indexing by editing the registry or using a cab floating around the forums. Do a quick search and you should find it. This eliminates that lag no matter how many files on you SD card, with no degradation of performance opening files on the card that I can see.

I have two HD2s (mine and my wife's). The experience with the two phones couldn't be more different. Mine has been perfect. My wife's has been very problematic. She has experienced slow, laggy performance, freezing that is only cured by pulling the battery, inability to unlock, text messages freezing for a minute plus, etc....... She isn't happy in the least that I convinced her to get rid of her blackberry.
On my wife's phone. I have tried a hard reset, various tweaks from these forums, switching in a 4GB class 6 card, removing the SD card completely and a few other things. Some helped a little but the phone just never worked right. It is currently being replaced by Tmo. With the troubleshooting I did I can't blame the SD card for the problems that phone had.
My phone on the other hand has been great and I have not had any problems with the SD card. I install all my games and non-essential apps to the SD card. I have ~650 MP3s on the card as well as ~900 various files that I take to and from work. There is a little over 8GB of data on the card with all these files. The only lag I have experienced is when switching to the HTC media player it takes a while (< 1 min) for it to index all my music and get to a usable state. I can try swapping in a 4 GB class 6 card to see if it makes a difference though since I have not had a problem I'm not sure I will notice a difference.

Will that mess with anything on the media player, tho? Like will it still sort the music into albums, artists, etc on the HTC media player?

so, if your transfers are capping out at 2.8Mbps, that's just a hair more than 1/8th of the 2MBps that the card should be able to handle.

Will the phone work as normal after installing the cab?? I am knew to xda and winmo. Been on android os since it came out. I hate to ask but could someone post the link for that .cab file that fixes the lag
I saw that sirphunkee had posted in another thread that simply turning off your "recent documents" tab in sense should stop the indexing and therefore the lag as well. I had turned off the recent documents tab from almost the start of using the phone. I have not experienced the lag problem so this might be a testament to this working. I will turn it back on and see if things change for the worse throughout the day.
UPDATE: I have a had a little time to play with it during my lunch break. Everything seems to be fine with recent documents tab turned on. The slider seems a little slugish in now, like there is a second of lag before it moves. It doesn't happen all the time and I may not notice if I wasn't looking for it. I can brows just fine in the file explorer, texting isn't a problem other than the clunky interface, all is well so far.
Also of note is that I am running the stock ROM with co0kie's home tab and a slew of other visual mods (mostly transparencies). I also made quite a few changes to memory allocation via registry edits. This might be the difference and worth trying. I made many of the changes noted in this thread, basically all of them after "Suitable for all ROMs" and before "Added 11/2/10". I wish I would have thought about this earlier.
Ok so here's the problem...Whenever I try to transfer my music or any other medias from my MediaGo Library to my X10i, the whole system's speed drops signifcantly...After dismounting, I wait for it to autolock...And when I unlock it just goes to a Blank/Black Screen...Then from there on, nothing will happen and just wait for it to drain the battery...I've tried repairing it via PC Companion countless times but still nothing happens...I have to dismount the SD card just to return to normal...So does that mean that transfering/storing medias in my x10 is useless and cannot use it for multimedia purposes??
Never seen such an issue before here in xda try flashing stock 2.1.435 rom and if that doesnt help well im afraid that i wont be able to help you, its surely not an physical issue tho.

Nope just the official 2.1 update...Tried rooting it via SuperOneClick to have access to the speed of the SD but the rooting didn't work...I tried transferring 354 songs, 700MB worth of videos and 400mb worth of pictures and wait for it to load for 6 hours and it works..But when I add beyond 354 songs, the problem returns even if I wait for it for more than 6 hours...
Your using the 3d gallery correct?
Try get quickpic it's much faster.
Does the same thing happen when transferring files by dragging and dropping to the sd card?
You sure about the capacity of your sd card? I've bought a few fake 1s from ebay that when they get past 2gb full (of 32gb) it starts to cause problems. Search for fake flash/ fake sd cards to find tools to test.

Have a 8gb SD card and with all the 354 songs, 700mb videos, 400mb photos, it would easily consume 4gb worth of space but you have to wait 6 hours though for the phone to return back to normal...But when I add more songs, thats where the problem starts...I tried also deleting all the videos and photos and replace them with songs and add beyond 354 but thats where the problem occurs...
I had the same issue with another phnoe. Your SD card might be dmaged.. try to use another one. there are a lot of softwares to make a low level format an repair. hope it helps.. And try to clean the Micro SD pins with a rubber or isopropilic alcohol

I have a sandisk 32gb micro sd card that works when I first start the phone. The problem is that it will randomly, completely, disappear.
Now I'm not, IMO, a complete noob. I am fairly (99%) sure it is indeed the sd card at fault. Ok, not an issue, I can always replace it with a new one.
The issue is, of course, that EVERYTHING is on my SD card, most importantly, my photos.
Even without accessing a file manager (phone idle, browsing web, playing games) the sd card will eventually fail leaving it inaccessible until the phone is restarted. When attempting to access my photos, which is what I need most, it fails MUCH quicker.
Having not used the "Google Photos" app before (just Gallery), I am not at all sure if my photos were ever backed up online, If they were, I'm not sure where to look.
Trying to access them via usb, wifi file transfer, bt tranfer, and even from file managers on the phone itself, result in an almost immediate failure of the sd card. 5 seconds or so tops.
The card is formatted as "Internal Storage" and I have not been able to find a way to get a computer or anything else to read it, and I would imagine for security reasons, there is no way.
Here's the question: Is there any way to get photos off the sd card, that wont take me three million years in 5 second intervals, while having to restart the phone every bleeping time the sd card fails to get it to recognize the sd card again?
Suggestions please!

Format the card using computer (Not quick format )
Quick format didn't worked for me.
And don't make card as internal, use it as portable
with the sd card in the phone, go to settings - apps, show system apps. then select External Storage, force stop it or clear it cache. do the same to Media Storage. reboot the phone, once everything loaded wait for 5-10 minutes especially if you have lots of files in a large sd card. once that done, connect the phone to your pc (use mtp if i'm not mistaken) and hopefully you can now access the internal (sd card) contents.

This will HOPEFULLY resolve the issue AFTER I get my photos off the card!
What I need help with is getting roughly 10 gigs of data off a card that works intermittently for roughly 5 seconds at a time....

I will try this and report back.
One question... If the card is formatted as internal storage, clearing data for external storage and media storage will not cause the phone to "forget" the sd card will it?

I think I have come up with a solution to my own problem. If this works satisfactorily, I will let others know as this may help many other people facing this issue.
I am on a linux pc. I am going to try to use RSYNC to copy the files over. This SHOULD copy files over, deleting them from the source folder as it goes. Once the sd card fails, which it WILL, once I reboot the phone and start rsync once again, it should "resume" where it left off.
Here is the command for anyone else that may need it:
rsync -v --progress --remove-source-files --recursive --append-verify /path/to/source/files /path/to/destination/folder
Hopefully this works the way I hope it will. Will post back with my results when I can.

I had the same problem, and the solution (that maybe someone posted somewhere in the internet) is using a faster SD card. Since I switched to a sandisk extreme pro, the problem disappeared. Be careful, though, when using Samsung SD cards: my moto x play doesn't like them much (I had to replace them twice before buying the sandisk; in some way the partition tables of the Samsung SD cards were damaged, plus they became read-only, resulting in two unusable cards).

which samsung model did you use? I just replaced my normal class 10 strontium card yesterday with a brand new samsung evo plus u1 card and formatted it as internal storage. so far the phone feels a bit snappy with this card.
dude search a little in this section and i hope u find the fix.i just let u know that our device has very sensitive sd pins and many users had accidentally bented them and didn't know the problem!
i hope u are not one of them!so if you are lucky,next time u put the sd be veeeery careful!i personally didn't put it out from the time i bought it...

It was just a Samsung Evo class 10. The strange thing is that I tried also a Sandisk of the same class, which gave me only the "external memory missing" problem, while the Samsung ones became just unusable plastic. But maybe I should try better Samsung SD cards.
Had the Priv for a few days. I set it up with a 128gb memory card formatted as extended memory.
It was HORRIBLE. So laggy.. Facebook for example kept freezing so badly that android wanted to close it every few minutes. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. ?. I was going to return it.
I noticed that apps took ages to install. Like 5 minutes and more.
I reformatted as external media, reduced the animation times, and now it flies! Not as quick as my Huawei P9, but everything else makes up for it. Loving a more normal Android for a start, the P9 was great but they ruined android.
Now I love my Priv. If you have problems, try what i did with the memory card.
But i wish it had notifications pop up on the edge, when the screen is off.

Picked up a Priv the other day. I flashed the modified AT&T firmware with international software so no ATT bloat. But the phone is so slow and lags. WHen you state you formatted as external media, how did you do this> And are you referring to the internal storage or the SD card? For some reason my Priv will even recognize my SD card (32gb) I place the SD card in my pc and it sees it no problem. I have formatted the sd card to fat32/exFAT/ntfs, etc and no matter the format Priv will not see it....
The issue you're having is that you are not formatting the SD card correctly. That particular memory card that you are using was previously formatted as internal storage on another device and is encrypted. It's a fairly simple process through command line. A quick Google search will help you out. If you can't find, let me know and I'll pull it for you.

I factory reset the Priv with a new card inserted. I honestly can't remember the exact procedure, but I'm pretty sure it asked me how I wanted to use it. Either as external media, or to extend the internal memory (So it all appears as internal memory, and encrypted)
For me, the best solution was to use it as external memory.
I noticed when using "selective focus" in Camera app that phone freezes for about 10 sec. Also when I am using Gallery app, phone freezes when I try to delete picture. Note that I set Camera to store pictures in SD card.
And now phone is not recognizing SD card at all.
My question is, if it is possible that SD card is causing my phone to freeze and if someone had similar problem to please tell me how you fix it?

We had this issue a while back on LG. Yes if you have a substandard card.
Moving apps and photos and such to a slower substandard card can cause lags in the system believe it or not

Thanks for reply, now that my SD card is dead, after removing it from phone, my s8 works perfectly.
A question mr/mrs Mad Scientist: do you use micro SD card on your phone and what class is it?
Also what are your thoughts on SD cards, now that we have phones with bigger storage?

I did i got a samsung Evo 128 GB class 10 never had any issues out of it.Also had a 32 gb evo before this
I recently came into a jailboken PS Vita So I installed the SD card on it for all my games and no lags their either
But about 45 gb free Im a stickler for free space so I go my bare minimum music i listen too many apps
and what ever else and got like 35 gb free so No issues there
I even use it for download as its fater than my pc normally then just transfer what ever and delete
Most of my photos are backed up on google so no worrys there
So with the increased storage even at a 64 gb model Is more than plenty for my day to day life If it ever runs low Im sure I can clean enough up
But in the past slower or dying cards and such take time to read write if you have moved a bunch of active apps to sd that gets compounded and bottle-necked on read/write speeds Specialy when it comes to videos and big files or games
