Battery life on 4.4.2 with ART - Nexus 7 (2013) General

So my latest battery result on my WiFi Nexus 7, completely stock, ART, is pretty damn good. This is with casual usage; YouTube videos, web browsing, IM etc.

Yeah!, Mine used to last 1 day with 5-6h screen time with 4.3, and with 4.4 + ART, it increased to 8-9 hours screen time!

Well, magnetic cover auto sleep-wake up cases dont work with ART so I wont be using art for quiet a while, despite better performance and longer battery.

I don't see a problem with ART and auto sleep/wake with my Modo case.

Mine works perfectly.
On the other hand I'm noticing facebook freezing a lot. Wonder if Facebook beta would help?
I reverted to dalvik in the meantime. Apps took slightly longer to install. A few games did performance better.
95% of stats
are while running ART.

Do you have to enable ART or is it enabled by default in 4.4.2?

You have to enable it under Developer options. You can always revert back to Dalvik if you like. Just bear in mind that the reboot will take significantly longer when you switch

Yeah that first reboot takes forever. It really hammers the CPU too, you can feel the heat around the back camera after it's done. But that's what you get when it's compiling at least 100 apps all at once.
So I'm now on my 3rd charge cycle with getting 3 days and over 10 hours screen on time on each charge. Excellent battery life. It's a shame the other Nexus devices don't have quite such outstanding battery life.

For those who get a over 9h of screen on time , do you have the Sync enabled ?
Are you on the stock rom ? stock kernel ? any tweaks over there ?

I have sync off. Completely stock. Regularly get 10+ hours screen on time.

I changed to art over a week ago and didn't see any real difference one way or another with battery. I'm getting between 10 and 13 hours screen time with 2 emails syncing every 30 minutes, nothing else synced, I don't use Google + and Wifi always on.
I changed back from art today as I was having some problems installing a couple of apps. They would download but not install. I'll see if there's any difference in battery now.

Battery life is a few hours better, I would recommend using it.
I just got a Nexus 7 this Christmas and kept it on Dalvik for 2 days, then switched over to ART just because I was bored . I decided that I would keep it because all my apps were running very stable and fast, and my battery life was a few hours better.

Works fine with my Poetic Slimline.
Battery life is great so far on ART, no weird app problems for me yet.

I'm experiencing a significant drop in standby time. I get around a day of standby time. This is when the wifi and sync are turned off. I've factory reset my N7 and I'm now on Dalvik to see if it makes a difference.

It does give a little more battery life, but even stock apps behave weird sometimes, very rare but i think ill stay away until ART is stable.

I just noticed that I couldn't switch to ART after rooting my device. Is this a restriction that Google has put in place?

Xposed framework was the culprit. I uninstalled it and now I'm able to switch to ART. ART+Greenify is giving me over 10-12 hours of screen time and awesome standby. I don't miss my iPad anymore.

I have the same issue but i'm on original OTA 4.0.3 (unrooted). In the past few days my battery drained within 8-9 hours, hardly using it. This night i charged it to 100% and within 8 hours it was dead. Android os is usually between 40 and 50%...
Since i have ICS the battery life was awesome, up till now... Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I suspect the Android OS is a combination of a number of apps/processes.
When I first upgraded to ICS I had the same battery drain issue.. I promptly disabled Google Photos and Google+ (don't use it) and now the battery easily lasts me over 24 hours with my normal usage (similar to GB). However the Android OS still reads as the highest usage but now its on par with screen usage.
I think Google photos and Google+ were constantly trying to sync.. hence.. the resultant heavy battery drain.. but I still think Google can somewhat optimise ICS to reduce Android OS usage..
My two pence not cent.. LOL.. (yes I am British!)

Thanks! I'll try that. But what do you mean with Google Photo's? The Gallery app?
I now remember even disabling the account sync to spare my battery, seems like it only made it worse if that's possible...
I delete those should I have not done that???? Can you tell me how you turned them off?

My Android OS usage is around 20~30%.
Doing some search and you will find some said that doing a factory reset will help, but other said it just helps in the beginning and then the problem comes back. So I am reluctant to reset it now. Hope Google fix it soon.

You can disable a few system apps in settings/apps. I don't think deleting is such a good idea. A system reset should bring 'm back I recon..
This issue is the only let down for me. I haven't found any fix yet. I've tried all types of kernal and rom combinations. Gonna have to deal with it until Google fixes it. So many users are affected by this

Also disabling apps removes them from the app drawer.. I love the "disable" feature in ICS.. saves me rooting to remove certain apps!
Anyway.. I think "Google Photos" refers to ALL pictures linked to your Google account, i.e., Google+ and may possibly include Picasa.
alright I will fully wipe and install oics v43 and flash glados 2.6....
so how do i stop browser sync and photos?
I don't think this is strictly an ICS issue. I had similar problem with 2.3 gingerbread roms also.
Its like already been said by a few people ahead of me. Its related to the services we have running and synchronizing in the backgrounds. I've noticed I no longer have the huge drain issues as I did with gingerbread. But then again I have disabled a lot of the background services that were constantly syncing.

Off the changer at about 7am then listen to music for awhile to drown out some boring teachers! then some games at lunch. A few texts here and there and calls for about 10 minutes. Its now 12:27 and I still have 67% battery!
I gotta put it on the charger before I go to bed so I can start fresh tomorrow.
Battery life varies GREATY with usage; a good indicator of usage would be your on-screen time.
What is your on-screen time?
Also we have another similar thread here:

Why did you create a new one ...?
There is another thread like this one with real usage battery life...
That being said, I agree that this combo has awesome battery life. I'm using it myself. I froze a few pre-installed apps, and turned auto sync off, and my phone seriously dropped 1% overnight with wifi on. That's pretty amazing. I don't have deep idol on, stock voltages, and 200/1200 with interactiveX.

I don't have my phone on me right now, so I'll post what I froze in a minute. Freezing apps stops them from using up RAM and CPU time. In turn that saves battery. It doesn't save as much as turning off the auto sync though.
my phone was 1 day and 15 hrs without a charger but this rom have bugs like home buttom not working screen close (need to be like old tv) etc etc....
I turned off auto sync and backup but my battery still drains pretty fast even when on 2G all the time.
I've frozen Maps and Talk but that doesn't seem to help.
I noticed that my phone awake time is high enough when the screen off although it can go to deep sleep normally.
I also noticed that Google Services has high % of battery use.
Any idea of what I'm doing wrong?
I'm sure that I have turned off auto sync.
But this Google Services still drains my battery.

There's an app on the market called titanium backup. You can "freeze" apps so they aren't running and don't show up anywhere. It stops them from running in the background.
I have an i9023, the GSM one.
Yes I've turned off almost all that my phone doesn't even deserve a title of smartphone.
Clean install of ROM is done already.

You have to freeze apps like Google + Google wallet ( stuff you never use) just make sure the system does not need it or you'll run into issues. Also use a task killer but disable auto kill and only kill when u need too.

Task killers are a waste of space. When will people learn how to exit apps properly and know that the android system handles its memory just fine on its own?

BajaRom horrible battery life?

I just installed the latest (and last) 4th of July BajaRom and love everything about it, except the battery life. I've only been running it for a couple of days. After only a few hours after all night charging, I'm down to 50%. I went back to the thread to ask for help only to find out its been locked. I've tried to run the Media Battery Drain Fix thingy in the BajaRom settings app, but it force closes for some unknown reason. I'm not sure if this would fix my problem or not. Anybody have any suggestions?
Hi, I'm currently running the BajaROM July 4th, I have no problem and did you do dirty installation it might be causing the problem. It might be one of your app kept wakelock that causing eat battery life.
Have you tried using battery wakelock detector app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector). It helps diagnostic why your battery life goes crap.
Here my recent screenshot battery life.

Thanks for the response. I did a clean install. This was my first rom other than bean's, since I used the beans method to come over to the rooted KK. Before that I was on 4.3 rooted running clean rom. I was disappointed to find out that Scott had stopped supporting his work there, but glad to move on to KK and find these new roms.
I did install the app you mentioned. The biggest hog shows to be Google search. I force closed it, but it restarts itself. I would think it needs to run pretty much all the time to function anyway, is it really a huge power consumer, or just runs alot? I used to always run my screen on full brightness, and I could still make it through the day just fine. I've put it on auto now, and it seems to be helping the battery quite a bit. But something must be different. I know that it uses alot of juice, but I've always kept it turned up and not had this problem until now
Hi, I would suggest you take Google search disable via application manager under the settings. It should stop the wakelock.
Here screenshot
Thanks very much for your input! I will give that a try. Does google search work differently on this version? I've always used it before and not had these problems. Its a handy tool, I hate to lose it. But if thats what it takes, its better than a dead battery I suppose
I never use Google search feature but if you hate to lose the feature then leave enable. It is up to you and I'm getting good battery life come out on BajaROM. ?

I'm running it on rom slot 1. I used the beans rom with the "built in root" to upgrade to kitkat. So beans is still in the stock slot.
If I can figure out how, I'll post the screenshot of my battery from yesterday. It was 9ish hours. Not sure if that seems good or not, but its WAAAY worse than it used to be. And I've uninstalled google search. And I'm running auto brightness, and its much dimmer. It seems better, but still not what it used to be. Not sure if it matters, but I may have had something set up wrong. I've never uninstalled google search, but when I did, it reset my home screen icons like I had just booted the phone for the first time, resetting hangouts as the default sms app, etc. Wouldn't have thought google search had much to do with that
Interesting side note, I'm using my windows based work computer to type these responses today, running google chrome web browser, and it keeps flagging google as misspelled by spell checker. lol

I quit.

I f÷׶ing quit.
I've been using this galaxy s2 for months but I quit.
Enough, simply enough.
This thing's battery life is so poor its just unusable. Rebooting the device makes me lose half the battery, and I can't fix it.
I really like this phone for it's performance but except for that it sucks. I've been trying to fix this for months but I cant get it working. No matter which ROM or which kernel, a full battery can't even hold one single evening of reading 9gag. (It survives just a hour, maybe a little more...)

The drop in the middle is a reboot
I've not used the phone all day, but at the second I touch it it drains from 70% to 10% in not even a hour, only app running was 9gag. It does NEVER survive a school day, no longer than 1/1.5 hour screen on time... The battery in it is brand new, and I even had it replaced twice by Samsung.
I'm sorry all, I'm taking my iphone with me tomorrow. This is no more fun.
You obviosly have media scanner issue, since sdcard is the first one listed. Install BBS for more info, but I'm sure it's media scanner. It can be fixed quite easily though.
About losing half of the battery when you reboot, it's a KK's bug on S2.(That is KK you're using, right ? ) It is annoying, but can be solved. Just plug it into charger, reboot to recovery, and then reboot the recovery itself. Battery percentage should fill up.
And at the end, you should't have rooted and installed a custom ROM(s) if you can't solve a simple problems like this.
With sammy based ROMs, you wouldn't have had those issues, but KK based ROMs are not perfect, so either deal with it, or simply don't use them.
You certainly have a problem with the mediascanner... A clean install would probably fix it...

Yeah, this bug used to happen to me a lot, a clean install would fix it, also maybe try a new rom? I've been on PACman since 4.2.2 and it's amazing=p
The battery is really good. Maybe try SetCPU as an app? - It's really good
Its some time later now, tried all of it, still no improvement
You have some serious sh*t going on your phone, dude...
I am browsing 9GAG also on my S2, and I can survive 2 Hours straight PLUS listening to music PLUS using Viper4Android (High Quality Sound Applied)... And has an extra 30 minutes to spare!
It's either something badass app running on your Background, or your Battery is just weak...
I have a 2-year-old Stock Battery and I can perform these... So... Yeah... Your setup sucks... Don't blame your s2... :good:

Dude... Just use BetterBatteryStats! Or GSM Battery Monitor to see what Apps are eating your extra battery juices!
I also recommend you to stick to Stock-JB-based ROMs (like NeatROM JB), since it's one of the Custom Stock ROMs that's gonna give you a longer-lasting battery. I recommend NeatROM since it's packed with Apolo Kernel, which also a good kernel for battery!
I use SlimSaber KitKat by fusionjack, since I want features. But if you want to enjoy more Screen-ON time with your S2, better get NeatROM :good:
Tell me what this is:
A simple reboot causes major battery loss.
And its HELL annoying
That's the bug on every KitKat based ROM, I already told you. You haven't actually lost your battery p
ercentage, it's just showing wrong informations.
Just reboot to recovery with your phone plugged into the charger, and then reboot the recovery itself, and your battery should fill up.
And install BetterBatteryStats, let your phone idle during the night, and post the log here, so we can tell you if there's anything specific draining your battery.

Fuel gauge chip problem. I have that bug even on stock rom.
I apologize then, didn't know it happens even on stock ROMs.
It won't even boot up today, it turns on and immediately gives 0% battery and shuts of again, it was fully charged for sure.
I don't have the time right now to try and get it work again. I'll just use my iPhone...
Have you tried checking your battery?
Duplicate or more than 2 years old batteries can give such results

TapaTalked from my Xperia™ Z (C660²) running Dirty Unicorns ROM!
Okay, today my phone completely died. It won't stay on for longer than 10 minutes, after that the screen starts to flicker and the phone shuts off.
I already tried to reflash stock rom, but the problem stays there.
I tried a battery from a friend's S2, that was confirmed working in his phone, my phone simply won' t stay on.

Serious battery life problem after update yesterday

So guys, I love my S7 edge, as I'm sure a lot of you do, but after the update yesterday my battery life has taken a serious dive in the wrong direction.
Turns out its the Bluetooth, except I haven't used Bluetooth all day, I've been at work, where I only look at it a few times a day.

Any suggestions or fixes?
Turn Bluetooth off?
Make sure Nearby Device scanning is turned off, and make sure Bluetooth scanning is off under Location > Improve Accuracy.

Funny thing is, bluetooth was never on.
Damn if restarting or clearing system cache in recovery mode doesn't work you might need to do a factory restore
I was thinking "Oh great, yet another dude complaining about losing 5 minutes of his 8 hour SOT", but I'll admit this is a weird issue, especially if you haven't enabled or used bluetooth at all. Have you checked with a different logger, like Gsam?

Yeah I'm not the type to moan about poor SOT. The battery life on this phone is among the best. But yesterday was just terrible. Seems today it is doing better. Only time will tell.
I also have battery life issues after the APD1 update. Whereas before the phone had no problem lasting 48 hours, now it struggles to last 36 hours (Exynos here). I hate these stupid updates: notification LED is dimmer under most light conditions, battery life now sucks...thanks, Samsung !

I know you are going to hate this, but do a factory reset. Pain in the ass I know, but your battery will be back. Happened to me on the last update. I was relieved after the reset.

How do you backup your apps AND app data without root?

Is your phone at&t?
Here's a thought, I also had pretty "bad" battery life after the previous update, and then it got back to normal after I re-enabled the stock Samsung apps that I had previously disabled, so enable them again and let them be for a day or two and see if you notice any changes. This doesn't apply to your bluetooth issue, but I just thought of this now.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I've experienced exactly the same thing with this update - was getting about 48hrs with just shy of 6 hours screen on time. I have a long weekend coming up, so I'll see how it goes and then restore if I think it needs it.
I typically use Ultra Power Saving Mode overnight. It lost 13% last night in about 9hrs. I would have been disappointed with anything more than about 2%. So hopefully a reset will fix this because I've been loving the battery mode up to this point!!!!

that backs up the apps, but not the "app data" which is a internally saved to the phone itself.
Basically my "Android System" usage went from 2-3% to 17-19% after this update. On the Exynos. So now the Exynos is now as bad as the SD820 at battery life.
I will reset my phone to factory right now, if this does not solve it (and I highly doubt it) then my only option is to flash the old APC8 firmware (it's possible to do it without rooting, right ?)

Use Samsung's own Smart Switch Windows application to take the backup.. It backs up everything, your Msgs, Contacts, Documents, Images/Videos, Apps and their settings..
