[Q] Why all the hate towards Isis mobile payment? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've been doing a lot of reading and all I see are people trying to Hack Google wallet to work with the phone.
I'm not trying to start an argument by any means - I'm just genuinely curious why nobody likes/wants to use Isis?
I'm on Tmobile and set it up, and it works great. I've used it probably 5 times now, and have no complaints.
Is it the limited options offered (Chase and AMEX)? Because that I can definitely understand if Wallet allows for more payment options, but other than that I can't find much information about people using it anywhere.

I dislike it for the limited options and the carriers being jerks and suppressing their competition.

What Hurr said. Verizon forces it on their customers even though technically it's illegal. They get away with it because they claim that Google Wallet requires access to restricted functions.
Nobody likes to be BS'd, that's really the only complaint.

[Q] What's the strategy behind "no voice"

What do you think is the strategy behind selling the Tab with no voice capability? Make us buy two devices instead of one? I don't think that would work, the first carrier that decides to sell it with voice will get the whole market.
Is there some other reason I'm not seeing? Come to think of it, why am I buyng this thing from the phone company if it's not even a phone!?
I'm with Bell and the TV add clearly says "complete communications solution" and shows a guy in a phone call... but only when you get to to store do they tell you you can't actually make a phone call!
No hothead answers please and yes, I know you can flash the thing and make calls anyway...

Exactly.
A few of us has commented on this in other threads... and I come down on the thought that all of the carriers are now rolling out these data-only (or Mobile Broadband, webConnect, DataConnect, etc) monthly plans where the obvious intent is to lock customers into multiple contracts -- one for their phone and another for their tablet device -- i.e., it is a play for additional revenue.
I can't imagine how there wasn't collusion involved here by the US carriers... unless it was Samsung's strategy, but that seems rather ham-fisted, even for Samsung.
Forcing you buying the device with additional data plan to the one you have now for your smartphone, that's whats behind date.
Wont I just cancel the data plan on my current phone when I get the Tab?
I'll be giving them less money not more... Why would anyone get two data plans?
Well, had just been to the TMobile store today to sort some other things out.
Had a chat with the sales girl who at first said it was impossible to get phone calls, they were different to the Euro models. When I took out my Tab and made a phone call, she was suprised but I pointed out that it was crazy I could get voice on Tmobile, but not 3G, but AT&T could be hacked to enable both. I asked 'why would I want to keep 3 accounts (my phone, my tab, and GF's phone) on TMobile, when I can more them to AT&T and get the device working the way I wanted to.
She couldn't really come up with a reason but didn't try to BS me. Eventually she realised that it was mad buying a phone capable device that had the phone part removed, but understood why I'd be bringing it back in < 30 days to get a refund and go to AT&T.
Then, after all that, she admitted that I wasn't the first person in complaining about it.
Sheesh.
But yeah, at this time, it's Prisoner's Dilemma. If NO-ONE offers voice, they'll get away with it. As soon as one carrier in the US offers it, the rest will have to offer it.

Interesting I plan on doing the same but did she say anything about returning it with the modified firmware allowed?? But yeah I'm seriously trying to debate if I really like having my second phone as a access point just to access Internet with the tab , and going to AT&T now with no unlimited Internet would be a crappy option stupid AT&T

Well, the joke's on them because I've cancelled my smartphone line & using the hacked Skype app to handle all of my Google Voice calls over their 3G network for a cool $25 a month. Can't imagine Im alone.
Unfortunately for tmobile I am going to return mine and get one from att. Didn't know they offer non contract. And their data plan seems cheaper and I can enable voice...

My buddy who is a manager for AT&T said there were 2 reasons to cripple the tab... #1 - why have customers have a total solution when they can pay for 2. #2 - can't have it take any fame from the iPad. Come on, why would AT&T make a stupid move and take out mms on their tab?! As small as it is but still, didn't they learn their lesson with mms on the iPhone?? He said this was covered in training. Im sure other US carriers have the same think in mind... Minus tmobile for reason #2... I am rather surprised in tmobile as they have been Rollin out devices like nobodys business and meeting the community demand.

I just signed for Axvoice unlimited international for just under $17/mo. and will be porting my cellular number to it. Now I can choose Simple Mobile or At&t for $60/mo for data only on the respective Tab and have simultaneous data and voip. I've been wanting to do this for a long time but now the plans and options make it possible .

Agreed. I'm sure a ton of folks will simply move to a data-only voip solution... but then you have folks like me who can't deal w/ any voip lag and require a traditional voice solution (but then I'm just going to use an ATT reseller as I refuse to contract w/ ATT directly!).

Yeah, I imagine it may not be a robust enough solution for a lot of folks, esp business types who need to talk on the phone a lot & need everything to be solid.
Fortunately for me, Im just a stay at home dad & dont talk on the phone that much. My wife & I mostly email/IM when she's at work, even when I had a smartphone. And the Skype/Google Voice combo works well enough when Im on the road to make/receive decent calls from random friends/family if I need that.
So for someone like me who uses much more data than voice, its pretty awesome that the US carriers actually didn't try to turn the Tab into a phone & charge extra for a voice plan.
Its possible to use the voip for the sprint g tab?

[Q] Google Wallet Tap to pay

Does anyone know if any LG devices are or ever going to be able to support the tap to pay function on google wallet? According to google support it is only supported on devices with a secured nfc chip, which the lg g2 has,
When I contacted LG, they pretty much dodged the question and acted like no one should ever use google wallet in the first place, then told me it is totally up to the Carrier, in this case Sprint, then they said they do not provide support for Sprint subscribers...
Then I contacted Sprint and they said it was up to google which phones would have google wallet, i then explained a little deeper and they told me it would definitely be up to the manufacturer.
I played their little game and called the manufacturer back, played the call recordings for them and he said he would submit a ticket. I asked if maybe it was going to be included in the kitkat update and he said I would have to check my phone....
Needless to say, I got no where.
So I am just curious, DOES ANYONE HAVE TAP TO PAY ABILITIES WITH AN LG PHONE?
On the AT&T and T-Mobile variants tap to pay has been removed. Sprint is a Google wallet partner so I imagine it will be available with kitkat.
Works just fine on 4.4.2 roms. Problem is that Isis doesn't work.

Thanks for the quick answers...I wish I would have known before I got this phone. I sold my s4 and got the lg g2 for $150. On my way home I needed gas but I didn't have any cash on me and knew I had some money on my google wallet account, but I could not get tap to pay to work. While waiting for someone to bring me gas money I made all those calls hoping for a good answer, to no avail. I ended up having to close out my wallet account to get my money, but that only took four days.
So when you say it works on 4.4.2, is that aosp, aokp? or which one? I was trying to find one that was closest to stock, but they're all named pac-man, etc. I wish there was one that was straight aosp, any suggestions?
I am using CM 11 right now. Paranoid Android is very nice as well. They are mostly AOSP. To stay mostly stock seems to mean no wallet, at least for now. Once an official VZW KK comes out I would think both Isis and wallet will work. Fingers crossed.

You can get wallet on there no problem even with a mostly stock Android.( Yes ATT and some others block tap to pay with it. However, look around, it works and you can get it working fairly easy. I have it running now and used it a Home Depot in Atlanta earlier today ). PA and CM11 as well as some others will work with it just fine as well. Wallet does NOT require a secure element on any phone since KK. It's now done via card emulation at the server side by google.
I use Power User Edition ROM and it works just fine on it. Based on an international rom I belive where it IS available.
ISIS works fine on the ATT phone. You just need to get a newer SIM from them if you haven't already.

I am not familiar with Isis, I have Sprint and we dont even get PC Suite to back up our phones, we have to root our phones and use a custom recovery to backup and restore, we don't have a choice. Paranoid Android is one that I was looking for, the problem is I don't think its available for the Sprint variant yet. With the galaxy S4, I was reading that the roms were interchangeable because of the GSM capabilities on Sprint variants now, but I tried installing a vzw rom to get PC Suite working to no avail, I guess I'll keep trying the Sprint thread, now that we have our own, I appreciate all the info

I feel so lsot not knowing what Isis is, I'm new to the LG G2, there isn't much for software on the Sprint variant, I just checked out the Power User Edition thread, it looks awesome like exactly what I'm looking for, I'll have to keep checking the Sprint Original Thread looking for it, thanks for the info
Isis is just like Google wallet although it s a little bit more restrictive to what types of Cards you can use. For example I think it's only American Express and Wells fargo cards that you are able to add to the program in order to pay. I'd choose Google wallet over that any time

Google wallet tap and pay Note 4?

Figured I would throw this out there.
Does anyone know if the tap and pay feature works on the note 4?
Yeah I know you can use softcard but I would rather give Google the business cause I didn't like how the providers wouldn't let Google wallet work unless hacked. Plus like the fact you can just use any credit card or debit card and not have to deal with selective cards and or American express.

Google Wallet is all but dead. It's not the carrier's fault. It's because Google's in the advertising business and wanted to track financial transaction data that the card issuers felt was too invasive. Softcard has a very good chance of succeeding because: A) the sponsoring carrier's want it to, B) they play nice with the financial industry, and C) thanks to Apple, NFC is suddenly the "answer" to electronic payments.
An article on Google Wallet's failure...
To understand why Google Wallet has not taken off, I talked to some of my contacts in the major banks and they explained that it came down to Google's business model. When Google approached the banks and asked them to support Google Wallet, it explained that part of their support meant that they would also feed data back to Google on what people bought and other personal data that Google could use to serve targeted ads. Besides privacy issues, the banks were not thrilled about being forced into a position to feed all types of shopping data back to Google just so Google could make money on ads. Consequently, most banks were not willing to play the middleman and in most cases would not fully support Google Wallet.

When Google/Android were younger they were seen as the underdog against Apple, Microsoft, and Blackberry in the mobile space. Now that they're mature, their thirst for revenue growth is beginning to expose the fact that users of their products and tools are nothing more than data sources with that data being sold to the highest bidder. Google's no longer cute, folksy, or an underdog. They and Facebook are probably two of the largest collectors of personal data being used to generate profit. I love Android the product. Its owners, their behavior, their business model, and lack of transparency not so much.
Softcard is nice & works fine, other than the fact that every banking & credit card I own is incompatible with it & has to be routed through AmEx's Serve card, which doesn't give me the opportunity to choose my method of payment/funding on the fly like I can with Google Wallet. If they would fix that, I'd have no problem using them.

Financial institutions taking electronic payments seriously is kind of "chicken and egg." Do they invest tons of money in infrastructure hoping that "if they build it they will come" or, instead of being an early adopter, choose to be a "strong follower" once those that went first do the heavy lifting and prove the opportunity? Apple's embracing of electronic payments and NFC has changed the game. You'll see merchants and financial institutions falling all over themselves now to get on the electronic payment bandwagon. We, NFC-equipped Android users, will see the benefit even though Google Wallet itself may not.
I know the tap and pay is working on my son's S5. Still hoping for it on the note 4. My other soon has it on his htc also. So I know it isn't dead working on 2 newer phones after the note 3.
@barry that's what I like about it you have a choice to use pretty much ANY card or bank where softcard your extremely limited.

When I said "dead" I was referring to its future not its current state. Strategically, the financial industry has better options (for them) that don't require feeding customer data back to Google. All Google's initiatives tie back to supporting their advertising driven revenue model. With their customer data collection objective stone walled what reason do they have to get in to electronic payments? The establishment's embracing of Apple Pay comes from their non-intrusive and non-competitive model and that anything they pay in transaction fees to Apple is offset by a reduction in fraud pay-outs. Why do you think Apple Pay's been so well received (B2B) and Google was stone walled? Outside of Isis/Softcard which is blessed by the financial industry because it's non-disruptive, the only other payment initiative with any heft going on is CurrentC ( http://www.nfcworld.com/2014/09/03/...-payments-venture-mcx-unveils-currentc-brand/ ). It's merchant-driven ($3 trillion in revenue generated by its sponsors) with their goal being to blow-up the financial payment status-quo to lower their fees.
So who's going to succeed?
Apple's "God" and has made nice with the financial industry, doesn't hurt merchants, reduces fraud, and delivers a high-value demographic in massive quantities (10M Apple Pay capable devices were sold in three days).
Softcard which is financial industry friendly, open to any credit card issuer to join, and is sponsored by the wireless carriers which control end-user access.
CurrentC which is merchant driven and who, at the end of the day, are more important to credit card issuers than credit card issuers are to them.
Google Wallet which was launched to gather even more relevant customer behavioral data to sell to advertisers and was never embraced by either the financial industry, the wireless carriers, or merchants.
PayPal's mobile strategy seems a mess. I downloaded their app on my phone and Gear and still couldn't figure out how or why I'd want to use it.
Samsung Wallet is the biggest cluster of a piece of s/w I've ever seen. Its been updated a half-dozen times and its UI/UX is still a mess and unless there was a huge incentive I can't imagine using it for anything. I see it going the way of Samsung Music, Video, and Books eventually.
So it's a three horse race in the U.S. - Apple Pay, Softcard, and CurrentC. None will be exclusive and will probably come to co-exist just as Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover co-exist as card issuers. At the end of the day no one will intentionally stand in the way of a customer sale and none of this is important enough to make a customer use or avoid a specific merchant based on their specific acceptance or rejection of one form of electronic payment or another. The next few years should be fun; especially when every payment terminal in the U.S. is being replaced to support chip-and-pen and will probably all be NFC equipped to be future proof. That'll particularly help Softcard which can rapidly build up an audience which, along with Apple's validation of NFC, should attract card issuers and financial institutions that may have been on the fence. It all comes down to who own/controls the audience and infrastructure. Google and Samsung own neither. PayPal has some infrastructure but its non-parallel.
I would never rule anyone out in the tech field. Things change too quickly just ask blackberry they were the only thing business used. Then MS and apple cane into play for phones. When Google did they were the so called ugly step child. Now blackberry and MS are hurting majorly in the phone business and now there are more android phones worldwide then anyone.
But still doesn't mean anything cause the next great idea could come from an unknown company tomorrow.
I also seem to remember the note when it came out. They also all said it's too big, it's ugly, no one would want it. Even apple busted on it and now, who has the last laugh cause everyone is making the phones bigger just like the note.
I didn't want a debate or opinions cause guess what everyone has one. My only question was WILL TAP AND PLAY WORK WITH THE NOTE 4. Which you still haven't answered. And would you please not high jack my thread unless you can actually answer the question which is why this thread was created.
I can create another thread for a debate on electronic wallets of you would like.

Just used google wallet tap and pay on my new Att note4 at grocery store.
I have used tap and pay twice, both times it was very quick.
Just open Google Wallet, input your pin, and touch to the NFC, should work fine.
I used it at a Whataburger and a Walgreens.

For those wondering if the N6 will work on Verizon....

I just spoke with an awesome and knowledgeable rep from Google over the phone. He told me without a doubt that the N6 OUT OF THE BOX will work on Verizon. There will NOT be a special model made for Verizon and that there is TWO Models, A US & International Model THAT'S IT. He said anyone who buys from the Play Store can simply pop in their SIM and the phone will do the rest. He also stated if you need more confirmation, Just visit http://www.google.com/nexus/6/ and scroll the the bottom right and there you will see Verizon Wireless.
Some of us already knew this including myself, But i realize some of you are nervous about spending all your money just for the phone not to work. You are good to go!

Im one of the many americans who live nearly paycheck to paycheck and cant afford to pay 649 for a phone off contract, sure id love to just not feasible in my current situation. 199 on contract is perfect for me because i can sell my galaxy s4 for around that and not have to pay any "out of pocket" i know in the end im paying more but this is just easier for me, than dropping 649 all at once. With that being said im gonna start saving for it and if verzion decides to delay that long i will purchase from google.
seems like tmobile is the only carrier i can see offering this on the home screen of their site.

or there is this...
This does not answer the question that MOST people need answered....... We don't care if the play store version will work on Verizon......most people aren't buying the play store version outright.... We need to know if the Verizon version will be locked down..... Just because it's the same hardware doesn't mean that Verizon doesn't get Motorola to flash their own version of firmware that locks out the ability to unlock the bootloader!

You're actually saving money by buying a phone on contract if you are going to use it on Verizon. The only way you save money is paying full retail and then going with a cheaper pre-paid carrier.
Ive pestered verizon online and over the phone and can't get a straight answer if they will ever carry it. Im hoping we hear something offical. From a business standpoint I can see why they would delay it. But thats TERRIBLE for customers but verizon always gets the last word as seen in all previous situations. Im fine to wait until end of Novemeber but any longer I may switch carriers. Might even be some black Friday deals
I think the nexus 6 sold by verizon most likely is a locked phone, which is why verizon store is selling the phone later than other carrier for they need to patched the phone.

I doubt it. Verizon's other high end phones have been GSM unlocked for the most part.
Verizon actually would take the least issue with selling a GSM unlocked device.
All of their LTE devices are sold GSM unlocked.
Because of the compatibility, this appears to be the first device they'll ever truly allow in a "bring your own device" fashion without pre-approving the IMEI in their database. It's good to see, and it makes sense with the push to sign customers up on Edge and the lack of contracts now.
Take it for what it's worth and with a hefty dose of salt, but someone claims to have spoken with their friend who's a network engineer and it sounds dodgy:
http://www.reddit.com/r/nexus6/comments/2lhrm2/detailed_information_on_status_of_the_nexus_6_and/
Sounds like while it may work right out of the box with an existing nano sim, you may be screwed without an existing activated nano sim. Furthermore, it sounds like the delayed release on Verizon (check out the individual page now which only mentions T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular) may be because Verizon is trying to change the terms of the agreement and try to get software specific to them and they may pull a Nexus One and drop it entirely.
I'm a bit concerned that even if I can get it to work from the day my GPS version arrives, they can at any time decide to block it and I'll have a phone I can't use on Verizon. If they pull that ****, I'll probably just leave for AT&T anyway, but the risk is still there.
Until Verizon officially announces something or is selling the device, those of us with a play store or motorola.com phone we've purchased are taking a risk it may not work or may work for a while and then stop working. And if Verizon decides not to "play ball" then what happens with radio updates? If there are radio bugs, we're screwed because they'd have to go through Verizon for that wouldn't they?
It would make sense if they didn't allow any unlockable bootloader phone on their network. But they are allowing Samsung to sell a dev edition Note 4.

Regarding the earlier point about whether Verizon will even carry the Nexus 6, I spent some time today at a local Verizon store looking at what my choices might be (like the Droid Turbo) if the Nexus 6 doesn't appear and asked specifically to the availability/timing of the Nexus 6 at Verizon. The manager wasn't aware of any date but did indicate they might not even carry it if the phone couldn't pass the Verizon testing and approval process. Not a answer that gives a great deal of hope but at least I didn't get the entire denial of any knowledge of status.

If vzw pulls a nexus one to htc incredible or black list imes why don't people organize and protest the fcc. Vzw is a carrier. We should have any device on their network as long as it's not harmful and they must prove harm case by case.

You would think someone would be in some deep **** if a bunch of us buy it for Verizon and then can't use it, especially when it says Verizon right on the Google play page and numerous of Google and Motorola employees confirming it works. I know were all tense about this but I really believe were all worrying to much. I know Verizons history as much as anyone so can't blame u but I say were gonna be alright.

There's nothing on Google Play store saying it works on Verizon BTW... Not sure where you saw that... Unfortunately VZW can carry or not carry any phone they want.

It is on the specs page as well as the device page (their logo) and was also mentioned on their blog or whatever. If it's all just to say it's /could/ work, then Google should honor returns well past the 14-day period because it sure as hell is misleading as hell.

Interesting; I don't see any of that here.

Android pay yes or no and why?

Wondering if you guys care about android pay. Its just as easy for me to swipe my card as it is to swipe my phone I don't care about this feature and it scares me to be honest what are your opinions ?
Unlikely I will be using it. I haven't seen many places around here that even accept tap to pay, so it's unlikely android pay will be supported
I won't use it.
Why?
Because Google refuse to release it outside of the states (basically)
5+yrs & we still ain't even got the Google Wallet App, never mind Android Pay.
Yeah I haven't seen anywhere to use to use it
I'll be using it.
I really could care less about Android pay.
I've used wallet in the past, nice but unnecessary. My cards all have tap and pay so there's no difference in pulling out a card vs my phone. In fact it's faster to just pull out the card. I could see in the future making credit cards obsolete or unnecessary to carry but at this point it's not fast enough and I don't care enough to change.
domyou have access to it? and why so?
I will never use it thanks to my stratos card.
Cash all the way.
Electronic systems just profile you (yes tinfoil crazy, but why not avoid it) and most importantly they are not reliable.
I use it all of the time already. Love it!
Not unless they ever allow it on rooted/modded phones. Used to use Google wallet all the time until pay forced update to continue to work, but then it doesn't. Much rather have root. Google can miss out on the extra data mining from me then.
I love it and will use it. right now there is still more places that don't accept it then do. but once everywhere eventually accepts it... I plan on basically replacing my wallet. lol. I agree its annoying that it doesn't work with root.. but with a nexus phone being so bloat free and such a clean experience I'm hoping ill be able to survive without rooting. we'll see how long that lasts.
Why be scared? The biggest reason to use it is not convenience, but security. Stores never get your credit card info when you use Android Pay. All these data breaches stores have had where credit card info is stolen... you are immune to that if you pay with Android Pay. That is why I will be using it.
This was my main reason to use it. Luckily chip and pin will be required by the end of the year here in the states, so that stolen card info is less useful.
My first exposure to NFC payment was in Dec 2011 with the Galaxy Nexus and I've used NFC alot over the years. Funny thing is, in downtown Chicago, there are fewer places that accept NFC payments now (i.e. CVS Apple Pay incident) than there were in Dec 2011. So for me, without places to use it and without it gaining more traction in the area I live, I won't be using it.
Yes, it is going to get me the chicks since they will think I'm from the future.
Will this work in Canada?
They should have gone with MST like Sammy.
Won't be using it as I have yet to see a store in this area that has it. Rural area and don't even see apple pay or anything like that around here
I use it wherever I can, but there are very few places that have nfc. I actually prefer using it versus my cards.
