[Q] KitKat Stock Email App Wakelocks - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First I'd like to say hello to everyone, as this is my first post in the Nexus 4 Forums.
My Nexus 4 is plagued by a strange issue and I'd like to know if anyone else is experiencing the same or can offer some advice.
In the stock Email app, I'm syncing three accounts, all of them via IMAP, all of them with the same security settings and all of them in an interval of 15 minutes. However, i've noticed that the app causes long wakelocks. Often more than one hour within ten hours of use. When opening the details it shows that almost all of the wakelock time is caused by my Work Office365 IMAP account. The stats are shown in the screenshots below.
#1 Microsoft Office365 Outlook (Configured to use IMAP, not exchange)
Server: outlook.office365.com
Sync frequency: 15minutes
Mails received: 1
No. of Wakelocks: 35
CPU Wakelock time: 1h52m
#2 Gmail
Server: imap.google.com
Sync frequency: 15minutes
Mails received: 0
No. of Wakelocks: 37
CPU Wakelock time: 7m17s
#3 GMX Mail (A german Email provider)
Server: imap.gmx.net
Sync frequency: 15minutes
Mails received: 0
No. of Wakelocks: 33
CPU Wakelock time: 26s

In the time recorded - today in the morning - I received only one text email on the Microsoft account. None on the other. I always had good 3g reception. I'm wondering why these accounts, while configured to the same settings, are having such a differing impact on the battery.
Looking forward to you suggestions and happy easter (or something like that),
CogitoErgoBOOM
P.s. With the KitKat Update, the Stock Email app didn't sync with the the Microsoft. However, this issue has been resolved in 4.4.1 or 4.4.2.

Well, I'm now using [email protected] Mail and getting much better stats.
The KitKat E-Mail app is buggy anyway.

cannot sync my facebook, twitter to my contact

I added my facebook and twitter account in settings->account and sync
and processed an synchronization in success (the sync icon is in green color)
In Contact, display option , I uncheck "only contacts with phones",
but my facebook and twitter contacts don't show up in my Contact , so I cannot link up with my phone contacts.
try this for Facebook
Go to Contact -> Submenu -> Get Friends -> (you should see your facebook account here, else add yours), tap on the account and select your friends.
PS: if this is your time time doing it, the application may ask you if you want to sync selected or all contact to your phone.
Let me know if this help.
PPS: if this works for your FB, you can use it for Twitter.

use link contact
there are contacts from facebook, but no picture, so I was thinking that there is a setting that takes little info, or takes birthdays, tel. numbers, pictures.
in my case, picture, birthday, email, tel are all available in my FB contact.
Is it possible your friend didn't upload photo in their FB?
I have a similar problem.
If I go Contacts>SubMenus>Get Friends I cannot choose Facebook. My Facebook choice is greyed out so if I click it, nothing happens! Any idea?
I found that its much easier to use the Facebook and twitter from the Market than the Sync's on the phone.
Just download both Twitter and Facebook from the Market and then sync those in Accounts&Sync.
Simply don't use the default ones on the Galaxy

[Q] removing T-Mobile sync

Anyone know how to remove the T-Mobile Sync option? When ever I add a new contact it adds it to T-Mobile sync and not to google.
You are talking about two different things:
1. saving new contacts to t-mobile account is default, you cannot change that. But before you save your contact you can choose from a pull down menu to save it in your google account. Next time you add another contact it defaults to t-mobile again. It sucks and is the only things that really bothers me.
2.syncing with t-mobile account...your t-mobile contacts are synced with the t-mobile server....you can stop the syncing by going to the account and sync menu. you can stop the syncing but you cannot remove the t-mobile account completely.
ahh I was hoping to uninstall it but that will do... thank you!

as am i, hopefully someone finds the service or .apk name for that because if someone who rooted the phone and wants to use it on a diff carrier doesnt need that sync account in there.
###As usual backup all your data and I'm in no way responsible if you brick your phone. It shouldn't because I just finished this on mine and it works fine.###
Now I found a way and just did it on my MT4G. Grab root explorer or similar if you don't have it. Open it and use the search for "nab" anything that comes up I.E. that says tmobile.nabservice blah blah blah. There was like 4-5 files for me one zip, obex, and a few others delete em all then your done. The Tmobile sync account is gone and the default contact save is the first account you set up for in sync.
How do you know it automatically saves it to your "tmobile" account? because i have auto sync unchecked for tmobile, and when i go into the settings for my contacts i have everything unchecked except google contacts...but under tmobile contacts it says ZERO

You know it's adding to T-Mobile, because when you go to add a new contact, T-Mobile is the default...

This is true regardless of if you have T-Mobile syncing or not (I have mine disabled 'cause who the heck needs T-Mobile contacts?)
I posted in the thread that led me here, but I wanted to ask Keldarr or anyone who has done the removal of all-things-Nab - does Phone show up as the default Contact Type? Instead of deleting anything to do with Nab, I just froze the NabService via Titanium...
This gets T-Mobile out of the list of Contact Types, but now Phone is the default - not the Google account I wish to be the default. I wanted to see if those who have deleted all traces of Nab, have Phone as a Contact Type and if it is the default.
How strange, in my case it saves by default to my Google account every time I create a new contact. Check your display settings.

Slow reply sorry for me my default contact save is the first gmail account i added. not sure what it would be if u didn't have a sync account besides t-mobiles sync but id assume it would be phone until u add a google account.

Big exchange bug..

On my search for better battery life, I eventually flashed back to stock rom. Being a bit lazy that day I didn't bother configuring my work exchange email.
By not adding the exchange account the battery life was amazing! 20 hours and still 63% after quite heavy usage.
I configured the exchange email with a bit of a test in mind after the improved battery and realised my sgs2 is always set to push. Even if I set to manual, the phone will revert back to push 30 seconds later.
No wonder I had crap battery all this time! This thing is permanently connected to exchange with push wether I like it or not. I now use k9 email for exchange which doesn't have the push bug.
This is quite a major bug as battery life suffers and data usage must be very high. If you use exchange try deleting the account and see if you get better battery.
I'm running stock XWKI4
Mine was working perfect until I hit a wakelock and drained my battery in matter of a few hours when idle...
It was perfectly fine until today... Weird it happens now and suddenly without changing anything...

Check you dont have any apps marked for automatic updating. Maybe a rogue app is draining your battery.
Exchange in gingerbread does have a bug. If you have birthdays in your exchange calendar then it constantly syncs. If you do a search for it you will see others with the same problem.just change the calendar sync to off and turn on for a couple of minutes a day to sync and you will see the battery life improve.

Can you elaborate on your Exchange settings, OS version, any customization you've done, etc?
I'm having the same problem with Exchange 2003 and ActiveSync destroying my battery life.
I've tried switching from push to pull with change in battery life. I did have calendar and contact syncing enabled when trying this.
For the weekend I decided to disable my Exchange account and my battery is doing much better especially considering I used the phone more on Saturday (Exchange off) then on Friday (Exchange on).
Here's my battery usage with Exchange push, contact syncing, calendar syncing and the following settings:
Period to sync e-mail: All
Sync schedule: 24/7 push
Period to sync Calendar: All calendar
Size to retrieve emails: All
Sync Contacts: Enabled
Sync Calendar: Enabled

I'm going to try goofing with the settings. Start by disabling my calendar syncing and see if that makes a difference.

Google Sync issues

Is anyone having Google Sync issues today?
I just reinstalled AOKP 4.3 and installed calendar but it's not even showing up and in the Account Settings it says google sync error.
Is it a bad gapps?
Have you tried deleting and re-adding your Google account?
Sent from my LG-G2 using Tapatalk
Yeah, just did it again.
The account shows up under the Calendar Setting, but No Calendars show up.

And in the Setting for the account there is no Calendar there even to sync:
I'm thinking its a bad gapps I installed.

Gmail doesn't sync in the background. Same thing with Calendar and all Google apps. I have auto-sync enabled for all accounts. Sync enabled for the gmail account. I have to manually open Gmail and sync. It's getting very annoying. I want to delete my Google account and re-add it, but can't figure out how to do it. There is no way to delete the primary Google account on stock. There is no Menu on the Google account
Edit: Found it! It's not on the Google Account page. From the Google Account screen, I had to press the Sync screen. That screen has a menu from where I could delete the account. Now let's see if it helps.
Edit2: So I deleted the Google Account, deleted the data in Gmail, all the syncs, Google Play Services etc. Shutdown the phone. Went to Google Accounts on the web and removed access for the G2 on the web. Then restarted the phone. Added my account again. No Luck. Sync still doesn't work in the background

[Q] Issues after upgrading to KitKat on Note 3 (N9005)

Let's start with te facts:
I live in the Netherlands and haven't modified my N9005 in any way. No root, no custom roms. Everything is stock.
Last friday I got an OTA for the KitKat update. Installing went fine.
After a while, troubles were starting.
First thing that went wrong was an error "android.process.acore stopped". This message started an couldn't be stopped anymore. Even after a reboot I still got the same error over and over again. I tried all fixes I could find on the internet, but ended up with resetting my phone to factory setting
After soms hours of reinstalling my phone, my phone keeps crashing. Out of the blue my phone freezes and then reboots. This happens about 5 times a day.
I also got an error when I opened my SViewCover (com.sec.android.sviewcover stopped).
And now I discovered that Samsung made a change in the email app. Normally I only received the last 50 mails. This way I could reduce my data usage a lot. I have a mailbox where I receive more then 1000 emails a day. Now Samsung removed this option and stared downloading up to 5000 messages. Also the default is to load max 50kb per email. Because of this I used 600MB in this weekend alone!
Does anybody else have the same issues and maybe found a solution?
I don't have kit kat on my note 3 , so I am not sure of difference with email app.
However on 4.3 there are two options

Yeah im not too happy with the changes made as well. The thing I dislike the most is that now you have to have the sync toggle on to manual sync. In 4.3 I would use the sync toggle for push emails and manual when its off.
EDIT: I can see now you said you get 1000 emails a day! What I wrote below won't help, sorry.
To get to your issue: the only solution I can think of (without looking for another email app) is to change the "Period to sync email" to the shortest setting*, which would be a day. This is how I've got my spammed email set up, so when it does sync it doesn't use up loads of battery or data.
Email (app)/settings/accountsettings/"your email username"/syncsettings/period to sync emails:
I wish Samsung in future wouldn't try fixing something that isn't broken.
* the shortest sync setting will sync more than a day if you need it to, by that I mean you just get a day at a time when you sync. Sync twice and you'll get two days worth of emails.

Tnx for your response. Unfortunately your suggestion won't fix my problem indeed.
I really liked the default email client because of the good integration and PGP support. But alternatives as K-9 are also quite good.
My biggest worries are the continues crashes. I really get frustrated by that. At this moment I can't use my phone for the wake-up alarm. After a reboot my phone asks for my pincode (what I really don't want to turn off). I really hope Samsung will come up with a solution. That's why I "hope" that more people have this issue so Samsung will take it seriously.
