Bottom half of alarm app screen not pure black? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In all other cases where pure black is present, the color really is black thanks to the amoled screen. However, I noticed that in the stock alarm app, if you look at the bottom half below the list of alarms, the black that's there is like a hazy LCD-like black. I noticed this when I was half asleep at night setting my alarm in a dark room. Most noticeable when you look at the screen with the lights shut off in the room. Contrast that to the deep blacks found when pulling down the notification shade. Can anyone else confirm? Thanks.

I was thinking that maybe since it's totally dark in your room, you're seeing glare/reflection from the menu and back button LED's... but then I guess they wouldn't be lit unless you have them set to always on. I just watched Insidious 2 so I am not going to try the dark room test :3 maybe someone else will lol

Yea it's pretty obvious once you look at it. If you compare something you know is real black (like the bottom half of the notification shade, assuming you don't have much notifications at the time) to the empty bottom part of the alarm app (LCD-like hazy "black"). I'm pretty sure it's just the alarm app doing something funky by design, but just want to make sure heh. Pretty sure I have an authentic amoled panel anyway as I do see deep blacks in other situations.

I couldn't resist giving you some peace of mind so I just tried it out in the bathroom. The alarm screen does have a weird black'blue hue thing going on. Especially when you compare it to the notification pull down.

oled screen issue?

can you guys try this out and tell me if you see this on your screens. first turn down the brightness and go to a web page with lots off black text. on my screen everything black leaves a faint line across the screen wherever there is a black pixel from right to left. do you guys see this? out is much less noticeable when the brightness is turned up.
I've seen a tiny hint of this in my screen, but it hasn't bothered me. If it's severe in your phone, you may want to contact HTC.

yes I notice this as well but I have to say that is only noticeable with backlight set to minimum, and i think it's a normal behaviour of an amoled screen. Now I have one question about the screen too:
When I'm watching pics or movies the screen has a very good resolution. For all the rest the screen seems a bit dotted and grainy, especially with text. For example in the app launcher where the app's names are written in white and the background is black the text is not extremely clear and if I take a closer look theres seems to be pink pixelss on the letter's edges. I can notice this thing almost evrywhere but I think it's a lot more clear to see with text and the backlight set to max. do you manage to see this too or do you think that's because i have a defective phone?

the grainyness on thin objects like text is 100% normal, its just how these OLED displays work.
This guy did some awesome research into the graininess issue using a macro lens on his camera. Really interesting stuff...

Eheh it's me that started that thread and i think that guy really did a great job trying to explain what's the problem... now i'm curious to know how many people notices this because till now it seemed that only me and that guy could see this "issue" so sometimes i'm still worried i have a faulty phone...it won't be a good thing since I'm from italy and getting a replacement phone wouldn't be very easy
My screen also appears reddish when i turn off the blacklighting in the clock app :\ maybe its defective?

No, mine experiences the same thing. Seems like reds are more biased when less power is given to the LEDs (not exactly a "backlight"). This is slightly noticeable on the lowest brightness setting too.
And mine experiences the "black line" issue too. I guess it's just how OLED screens work.

Seen it slightly a few times. But never bothered me since I'm never in very low brightness that much.

Screen TOO bright as bedside clock

I had gotten so spoiled to how dark I could get the diplay on my Captivate when I used it with the Bedside app. Last night I changed every setting I could find and it still is VERY bright with a totally black display.. I could get the Captivate black screen Much darker. I did get the LED Hacks app to turn off the backlit buttons, but the black part of the clock screen will not get dark.
Does anyone know how to increase the "blackness" of the black?
I use an app called "Screen Filter".

There is a button that looks like a jagged sun on the left hand side of the screen in bedside and if you tap that it lowers the brightness. it's VERY dim but totally viewable in the dark.

I think you are thinking of the clock for the Better Alarm app. Bedside doesn't have the sun toggle button. Thanks though.
I downloaded the Screen filter and will try that tonight. Thanks
I'm in the same boat with my inspire. Black levels in a lcd screen will never compared to the ones of a super amoled. If you want the darkest blackest blacks stay with your captivate. I heard they're getting froyo tomorrow.

It's called a super amoled screen, which the atrix doesn't have. Sadly, contrast on lcd screens sucks.

yellow screen?

Is this normal or do I have a faulty unit?
Screen looks very yellow compared to my other phones.

What is the other phone? Go to settings -> display -> color mode and set color to normal, that will normalize it a little. It's set on vibrant by default. Regardless of that setting though, the screen on this phone is a "warm" one compared to others. The phone on the left is "cold" and bluish in comparison. Warm screens are a little more yellow/red, cold are blue. If the other phone is AMOLED there's your reason, but even if it's LCD, it's just tuned a bit differently. You should know that the phone on the left isn't producing a perfect white either, just a kind of white you're used to. Personally I prefer a warm screen, I find colder screens harder on my eyes.
TLDR- it's working as intended.
Unless you screwed with some settings no that isn't normal. If my whites were that yellow I'd return it. While an LCD might never be as white or black as an amoled it shouldn't look like 20 year old yellow paper either. WIth LCDs if you lower the brightness the screen will become more colored but nothing like that. You can also go compare it to some phones at the store that have LCD's and get an idea if its out of whack.
I spoke to two different support people at motorola ...one said it was normal for this phone as the screen was optimized for gaming?? .....the other said it was not normal and I should return it.
I tried using the app 'screen adjuster' to boost the blue light and it did indeed make it look white rather than yellow so it seems to be a color temperature setting so I'm still not sure wether changing the phone would make any difference and I can't compare in stores because they don't have them yet.
p.s. the other phone is an LG G2 which is LCD
Mine seems to have a little yellow at low screen brightness but it doesn't seem as bad as in your photo. I probably would not have noticed if not for this thread. Is your screen brightness low? Mine gets more white as the brightness goes up.

If it bothers you you can go through the return process and see if another one is different. My phone looks pretty much the same next to my Galaxy Note n-7000. That's AMOLED, but AMOLED or not, screens can be bluish. For perspective, here's what white looks like for reference. Neither of the phones are producing white. One is bluish, one is yellowish. Do you notice it when you're not comparing phone screens? After a few minutes of looking at the screen, going from app to app or looking at pictures, do white things register as white?

I noticed it had a very warm color temp immediately I turned it on, and then got my other phones to compare ....it does bother me yes ...it's like having a TV with a yellowish screen ....I'm pretty sure it can be fixed with a software update and is not a hardware problem which is why I'm not sure if returning the phone would accomplish anything unless I see some other pures to compare
I just found this thread on another forum:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/mo...to-x-pure-edition-screen-has-yellow-tint.html
and this:
I also noticed that the Moto X screen runs a little warm with regard to color temperature. When browsing the web via Chrome, there’s a noticeable yellow tinge, especially when compared with the iPhone 6 Plus’ screen.

This is mine. I think ambient light may affect it. It looked more yellow when I was in a dark room. This is in a well lit area.

Mine is warmer color from 50% to 0%, Higher values and its very white. Didn't even notice it till I saw this post and well, it can't be unseen lol. I keep my display around 10-20% usually on the low side however at night in bed it doesn't look warm at all.

@op: is normal, that's what you get for paying this little. Low quality screens. Check androidauthority latest review of the phone, his screen is exactly like yours.

yeah, ok so it seems it is quite normal for this phone then, although from the androidcentral forum thread I posted above some screens are more yellow than others and some are actually very white, seems to depend on the batch .....i guess I'll just learn to love it

Is your Iris Scanner always blue?

Seems on the far right at the top of the phone, the Iris Scanner's blue light or whatever is always on. It's almost like a notification light that never turns off. Anyone else seeing this?

Makes sense as it's an IR camera, reflective coating to reject most visible light.

Thanks. It's the one thing about the phone I do not like. Its quite reflective and distracting while looking at the screen.
I must admit I didn't notice this last night when inside, however when I used it this morning in daylight it is pretty blue. Quite annoying really but I suppose I will get used to it
i have been having the same issue with the light blue light. its not the lens or reflection either. most of the time its on and hurts my eyes if i look at it to long. that or maybe its just big brother watching 24/7. haha

Screen defect alert. Check you phones!

I've got a weird bluish green glow just below my speaker grill.
NOTE: IT IS NOT MOTION SENSE
I've used motion sense and can understand why you think it's related, but it is not, I can assure you.
It seems like a manufacturer defect. It's there all the time. Even on the lock screen. It does not show up in screenshots and I did a factory reset to see if it would go away. It did not. I need to find others with this issue. Go in a dark room and look at the very top of your screen. You might see a discoloration that does not go away and even shows up with your ambient display.

Dude, I saw it too. That's a light line designed by Google. It's also an indicator when wave hand to switch track.
Yes, it is the motion gesture light for when music is playing, or when a call is incoming. One can always disable motion gesture if they find it bothersome.
Yeah. Like I said, it's not motion sense. It's there even when it's disbabled, on boot, on the lock screen. I have a replacement coming soon. Just watch out for it. I can't be the only one
Yep I've got it. It's like the top of the screen has some light leak that on grey makes the screen turn green.
Used a screen tester to confirm it. In the UI it looks almost intentional but it's pretty apparent.
Really very little light bleed on mine. I would't have noticed it if I haven't read this post.
Wow. that's annoying looking. No light bleed here. Sorry to see you're having issues :/
Totally get were you're coming from. I had a 4K TV with some light bleed and even worse clouding issues when watching HDR content. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

just got mine nothing like that either. All is good here loving it :good:
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.displaytester
Switch to 18% grey (18% for all 3 sliders) and lower brightness (swipe in between the bars up and down) to about 2-3%
I can see a slight green shadow on top... I thought it was intentional, but now I realize it's not.
Please report here what you finally do.
It's something I can clearly live with, it's very slight, and I can't see it in daylight, but obviously I don't want. Maybe I'll keep it some weeks and see how all this evolve before I place a RMA request.
