My experience with my S4A has been amazingly flawless up until yesterday, when it started experiencing one of the issues that killed my experience with the HTC One- random freezes. And what's strange about it is that they are the same type of freezes that my One experienced, only when browsing the web or using an internet based app like Pulse. It has happened 3 times since yesterday and is so bad that I've had to pull the battery to even get it to reboot. Which brings me to one of my suspicions...
The only thing that has changed between me getting the phone set up originally and when the freezes began was the fact that I started swapping batteries instead of charging the phone. Now, phone batteries nowadays are not just like your average AA cell, it has circuitry in it and NFC stuff... is it possible that a defective battery could be the culprit of my woes? I just put in my original battery and am gonna just wait and see if it happens. The other battery that I've been using is a Samsung OEM battery and not a cheap one. I did root and freeze a bunch of stuff, but nothing exotic, and it was fine until yesterday. I doubt anything I did caused this.
Has anyone else experienced any freezes like this? Help me solve this, I really want to keep this phone (at least until the next latest and greatest comes out). TIA

Mine started Sunday. All it would do is hang at the ATT logo on reboot. I ended up doing a factory reset and it hasn't happened since. Certainly made me suspect the rooting I did...

What did you do to your phone after rooting?
A couple of times now my active has become unresponsive. The power button doesn't seem to work and the home key doesn't do anything. The led is flashing blue and the battery is still about 35%. The only thing I can do is pull the battery.
Not sure if this is related to your question but I'm going to try to get it replaced...

Didn't really do anything drastic- Titanium Backup and froze some att crap. Nothing even remotely close to system apps.

My LED never starts flashing but like yours, none of the buttons respond and I have to do a battery pull. I really don't want to have to get it replaced, and I really don't want to wipe and start over, just don't have the time right now to do either. Did you do anything to yours? Root?

Same here. Nothing I froze should have any affect on system stability.
I Haven't had any issues since I've had the phone, going on 3 weeks. I've been rooted and have froze apps in TB with no problems since geohot gave us root. Also have done some other root mods, and have not experienced any issues.
Sounds like just some bad hardware circulating.

I've modded mine a good amount and haven't had any lock ups. I have just about every root app out there. Xposed with nottach, dark phone and contact apk, and cm10.1 messaging app. Froze a lot of bloat too

Man I REALLY hope it's not a hardware issue. I'm so tired of doing the repeated exchange thing. I went through 5 One X's before I found a suitable one, saw that pattern emerging with the One (had 2, both with same issues) and was really hoping the S4A was going to be the answer to my woes. I really love this phone but if it ends up being a hardware thing, I will be incredibly disheartened.

Any way to tell the build dates of our phones? Maybe we could narrow it down to a certain production date.

I dunno... My box is in another state so I won't be able to check it for a few weeks. I bought it on the very first day it was available if that helps any. On a side note, I put my original battery in last night and it hasn't locked up on me since. We'll see what happens by the end of the day.

I am rooted but that's pretty much it.
The only thing I know I was doing at the time was watching a YouTube video then pressed pause.
Next thing you know I picked it up hit the power... Nothing. Hit menu... Nothing. The blue LED was just the normal notification indicator, so I knew it hadn't powered off... Resulted in a battery pull.
I also know that I didn't get any messages or new notifications while the screen was off.

I ALWAYS have issues restoring from titanium backup, esp going from one phone to another. My suggestion is to factory reset and start with a clean slate, cas only then can u verify a hardware issue.

I know on the Captivate the Build Number could be found under the battery (can be found there on the S4A as well) and it was the year/month that the phone was built, or so they say. My S4A Build number is 1306 so I'm guessing it was built the beginning of June...

I would like to know if you have had any more problems since you put your original battery back in? If you could give a update I would really appreciate it. I really think the active is a great phone and I truly like it but if people are having a lot of issues with it, I'll just return it and get something else to save myself a headache down the road. I have a week left on my return date so that's why I was wanting to know.

gf has had similar issues; heres what fixed it.
battery pull
factory reset/restore
reboot
battery pull
reboot
root/etc/restore from there. check to make sure you dont have custom CPU voltage/speed mods enabled; i believe this was the initial culprit, though even after resetting them to stock it would still lock up. it only did it 3 times, and usually right after a new mod, but ONLY if CPU values were changed. after the above procedure, she redid all her cpu values but only AFTER all mods were installed, rebooted, and everything works great again.

Same problems no matter which battery. It seems to happen most when I'm using Chrome so I deleted the updates but it's still doing it. It happened while playing a game today which it's never done before. Next step is to freeze Chrome and see if that helps. If not, then I'm gonna factory reset and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to exchange it. I really did not want to have to deal with this. With my ridiculous work schedule I don't have the time or the energy. I might just start looking for a different phone because I'm sick of having issues like this.

I would say if the factory reset does not work than it is the phone itself. I had issues like this in the past with my old infuse and I did a factory reset and it took care of it. Hopefully that will help you out so you can keep your phone. Thanks for replying.

Yeah bud, I really hope a reset works. I might do it tomorrow, I should have enough time. I'm just frustrated that I'm having identical issues with the S4A that I had on my One. I was really hoping to find a phone that just works. I don't think I've had a problem free phone since my Epic 4G Touch. My One X had issues (though my 5th one was near perfect), my iPhone 5 was horrible, both my Ones had problems, and now this. I'm just venting now but I'm seriously tired of it. I've got my eye on that new Sony i1 that's coming out in a couple months, I really love their current design choices and I've never tried a Sony before. Or maybe the next Nexus. Who knows. I just don't want to deal with this crap anymore.

Have you tried charging it for a couple hours? Try going into the stock recovery and do a factory reset from there.
Uhm, try extensively charging it, eg. overnight, and than try to power it on again.
Make sure your phone is completely off, by booting into the bootloader and choosing Power Off.
Than connect the charger and the cahrging sign should pop up.
yes, i already do the factory reset from recovery menu ..
and I already charge it like 6 hours, but still the device keep turn it off ...
is that possible a hardware failure?
:crying:
Worst case scenario you just have to call Google and return it.

If flashing factory images and charging it for a decent amount of time hasn't fixed it, it does sound like a hardware issue. I would RMA if you just got the phone.

Annoying "Prevention Information" Message and Samsung watch on drains battery life
Unlike others, I only get the prevention Knox message when I turn on my wifi radio. Any reason for that? Do I have to root in order to get rid of this damn message? Thumbnail attached.
Problem number 2. I was really loving the Samsung watch on, because I actually take full advantage of the IR blaster built into the phone, and I found the universal remote feature pretty damn useful. One day, however, a day in which I had no used that app at all, I noticed my phone burned about 60% of the battery in about 2 hours. I looked under battery manager and it attributed over 50% of battery waste to "Samsung Watch On". I thought it must have been my fault somehow, closed the app and put my phone to charge. I had to let my phone cool though, because it got pretty hot during the battery wasting process.
The following day, I got woke up at 7 45 am with 100% full charge to go to work. By the time it was 9 am, I was already and 78%, and I had not used my phone at all. Once again, my phone was really hot. And again, over 60% of the battery waste was attributed to "Samsung Watch On". The app cannot be uninstalled (I am not rooted) so I had to "disable" it. Ever since I did so, the problem went away, but I lost a very cool feature of my phone. Anybody has any idea what is happening?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Prevention info is nothing to worry about it is a widely spread bug, which i had before i rooted...
Schould be fixed by future updates
Reproducable by restart phone -> wifi on off
Only thing you can do is delay the message for 30 days and wait for a ficing update

People started getting the message about ten days ago. Here's a 10 page thread from the AT&T forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498586&page=10
AT&T rolled out an update yesterday. I got the below without doing anything on my part soon after the update was applied. I haven't gotten the prevention message since.
I use WatchOn and haven't had any battery drain issues. Re-start the app but don't enable some of its features like "show on lock screen" and "show in notification panel." Also don't set up some of the social features but do link it to your Samsung account. That's how mine is set up on my N3 and 10.1-14 and its been fine.

Which IR blaster did you download? I tried 3 different ones and none worked. Also, I should note, I used the Samsung watch on for a whole month just fine. Without me changing any of the settings, it was after the last update when it started doing weird stuff
Root and get rid of knox app.
Regarding watchon. I didnt see any battery drain at all. I am using 2 ir blaster apps. No battery drain.

I liked the watchon remote but I do not like any app that does not allow me to exit it. I just use the free version of this ir blaster to control my bedroom samsung tv for on/off and volume. The downstairs tv has the logitech revue so it is all controlled through google tv and I have the recommendations, the tv guide and all the stuff watchon offers through google tv (it was just nice to have it on the phone) and my google tv is streamed through a wireless hdmi actiontec receiver to the upstairs tv but I cant control the upstairs tv with the same remote which is why i liked the ir blaster on my phone.
I found the prevention message was actually generated by the stock Anti Virus the phone shipped with. I removed it and put in my own such as Avast and I have never seen the message again.

Yes the ATT branded 900A has Lookout Security preinstalled. It was generating a prevention method about some software making an unsafe operation, but the software in question was some of Samsungs and ATT's own apps. I removed Lookout and instakked Avast and I have seen no more such messages.

I'm just getting this WatchOn battery drain too. However, I don't notice a difference in battery life but I do see it using more power than the screen. It's possible that it's just a bug for the watchon app, considering it's only happened to me recently.

Hi !
i have a Galaxy S4 i9505, and yesterday something really strange happened. I left my phone charging overnight on my pc and in themorning it wasnt charged it had only 3% left and after the battery has drained the phone shut down, and then POOF! it won't charge and turn on no sign of life no LED no vibration, nothing. i tried a new battery nothing happened tried different charger and full battery and nothing seems to fix it. so i used a galaxy mini 2 waiting to find a fix for this and the same thing happened to the mini i left it plugged into my pc and the next day no sign of life. it's very strange. just to let ou know that i dont charge my phone on the pc this is the first time i leave it plugged in and when plugged it says that it's charging but somehow it stops and kills the phone . PLEASE help !
ROM and bootloader used?
Current from pc is very low and your mobile might have use more than it due to background process and hence your phone might have slowly discharged instead of being charged.
Try charging from a wall charger for a few minutes and then try to boot it.

But also it shouldnt be discharged by backgroung process. It is really wierd. Maybe you can see in the battery stats to find which app is using this and freeze it. Use battery doctor to kill apps when the screen is turned off.

Hi, thanks for the answers but i tried all of that and i can't get even the s4 logo to show nor the LED or any sign of life, i even tried a full battery and nothing happens it's not the power button since it don't show anything when plugged into a charger, the saaame thing happened to the other phone. the ROM is omegadroid and whats a bootloader ?? a phone repair guy told me that he can flash from a port inside the phone that needs some soldering, he told me that it's the way samsung flashes the os when the phone is empty and just got out of the factory is this true ? WTH is going on with this phone :crying: and also could it be some kind of virus that kills android phones just when booting because the phone was okay after unpluging it from the pc the problem happened when the battery drained and it shut down after that it wont turn on ! i'm sure that if i plugged the phone to a charger before the battery drained it would be still running now.
What is the warranty status of the phone?.
The guy is talking about jtag/riff box.
Also try not to use the word POOF" as it means homosexual where I live. There may be ones on the forum that could take offence.

Flashing is possible but I recommend you to go to a Samsung service center (even pay them if they figure out that u r out of warranty) as the process is tooooo risky.

I had a similar problem about six months ago.
I don't know if this will help but I found that by disconnecting the battery, leaving the phone for approx. 10 Min, reconnect the battery, then connect wall charger (but do not attempt to turn on). I found that after about 10 - 20 mins the phone started to charge (really slowly, it took about 8 hours to completely charge). Only after this did I attempt to turn it on and it seems to have been fine since.
Hope this helps.
Riff box did not work :crying: i think it's dead

Thanks for clearing that up, I totally thought his phone turned homosexual!
That would of been a very, very strange problem indeed.
Okay aside from me not having a computer to be able to develop on I still use my Note 3 and yes I am a flashaholic so I do continue to test other developers ROMs and find something that works for me. I am having some really bad battery drain issues on my Note 3 and it gets VERY hot.. i mean like really hot! First off let me say that I don't have warranty on it so i can't send it back to get another one. Whenever I use the phone for pretty much anything it starts to get hot and then battery drains like 20% every 20 min or so. I've tried flashing multiple ROMs and even using stock.. yeah STOCK. But each and everything that I have tried just doesn't help. I am at the point of like smashing my phone on the wall or something lol. Please if you guys have any suggestions please let me know. If i can't get this thing fixed then I will no longer be a Samsung Fanboy (that's a lie) lol. But thanks in advanced!

I had this problem with my old razr, it didn't get as hot as you say but the battery did drain really fast. If I were you I'd buy a new battery and see if you have the same problem. It's not uncommon to have a shot battery. Although, I'm not exactly sure what could be causing the overheating. You could possibly try putting it back to stock, calling Verizon and explaining to them that your battery is dying really fast and the indicator will jump percentages really fast. They may replace it...."may". Tell them you have done nothing to do it and have tried everything on the internet to fix it. What's the worst that can happen, they say no? Good luck man.

If you have an sd card installed, take a look at that first. Make sure there aren't any corrupted files on it.

Before I made this post I did some research and found that the sd card may be the problem. I have had it removed for around 2 weeks. I also took the sim card out and still nothing works. If Samsung doesn't send me another one then I will switch to Moto.
Running apps have a factory Mode running? That's what used to make my phone hot.
