I was considering buying the Galaxy Note, but after I read the Note subforum carefully, I discovered few (major) issues with the device, which made me reconsider my choice.
Now I have the same situation with Galaxy S3. Before I purchase it, I want to know about all the potential problems that are known for this device. Maybe it has bad battary performance, maybe it has bad sound quality, maybe... ?
Please shortly list all the common problems (if any) that happen to be associated with this device.
not just building it up, but i can not say that i have noticed any big flaws with this device.
i have the Note right now as well, and i would pick the S3 hands down over my note, its faster, the screen is better, the battery is great compared to what i was getting on my Note and Skyrocket. and now with Jelly Bean/cm10 here this thing flys.
Gps is decent, Sound is much better than any other phone that i have had, and thats without Supercurio's Voodoo sound which should be dropped here soon.
Its a S3 forum, so yes you will get alot of people saying exactly what i am saying....its a great device. and if you HAVE to choose between the Note and S3 the S3 is a no brainer....
now the Note2 thats a different story when it drops......

I had a lot of issues and ended up having 4 replacement handsets and have just got a full refund today. Issues I experienced were; large gaps between the screen and bezel which allowed dust to settle on the edges of the screen, pink blotch issues when using the front camera, volume button and home button that stuck in when pressed, and all AMOLED screens suffer from ink marks on a black screen to varying degrees.
I think the initial production batches have suffered from poor build quality and I do think I will purchase the phone again in a month or so when the factories won't be over stretched to cope with demand. The pebble blue version which I had seems to suffer from a lot of issues which I put down to rushed production.
Good luck

I agree with everything you've said, except for the GPS part.
I don't find it decent, it's exceptional imho.
It seems to be able to get a solid signal within 5 seconds on a cold start.
It uses both GPS and Glonass together, which explains why it's so fast, but it's still impressive to see.
But back on the subject, I've always chosen devices I was pretty sure I'd be happy with (I'm doing lots of research and reading a lot of reviews on them before buying), but it's the first time that I really don't have any complaints at all (besides minor problems with easy fixes/tweaks, but the phone is really stable and fast out of the box).
Even the only thing I thought I'd be disappointed about, coming from an HTC HD2 (the build quality and design), I was pleasantly surprised about the build quality, and I love the look of the phone, even if it's plastic.
Of course that's only my opinion, but I don't regret buying it one bit
These threads are a common problem in the S3 General section....if you look down I'm pretty sure you'll find threads already created, discussing the problems you've just mentioned

I have been using Note for last 5 months . I bought it from Ebay . Till now I didn't face any problems with the device.
It depends on the device you get, some device may have manufacture defects and that's rare.
Worst case if you get such device you can get it replaced as you have warranty.
So stop thinking about odds and go for the device you love
The GS3 has had an unusually bug-free (relative to most other smartphone releases) launch.
Hardware Problems:
Crackling in audio output when phone display is off (phone is in idle mode). Can be fixed in software by setting sleep mode to Idle Only from Idle + LPA.
Some screens are faulty and have pink areas
Some cameras are faulty and cause pink blotches in images
Software problems:
Cell standby battery usage is misreported and over-inflated
Creating an SMS longer than 3 messages converts it into an MMS. No way to disable this unless modding.
Email client (not gmail) mail body field text selection is bugged. Text gets deleted randomly when moving the text selection handles.
Music player sometimes plays the wrong song (one from a previous playlist) when you click on a song.
Music player also has some problems with organising songs into albums, creating duplicate albums with the same name.
The quick scroll alphabet column (in contacts and music lists) has a delay when sliding finger on it for the first time after app load
That's all I can think of right now.

I'd say the marble white version was relatively bug-free as a launch handset but the pebble blue version probably has just as many launch defects as any other handset. For example, I ended up going through four faulty pebble blue handsets until finally giving up and getting my money back.
Physical home button - hard to reach, hard to press, looks stupid, feels stupid
Wake up lag - Push the power button and wait 1.500 ms for the screen to appear
Only 1 GB RAM - Not enough for a top phone in 2012... This is not 2011 anymore, Samsung!
Nothing else.. Everything else is top class..
Yea that lag is sooooooooo long I fall asleep! And I have to get a long stick to push that dam home button! And the battery it last way to long! Why can't it just die after 14hours like the rest? If you didn't know I was being sarcastic!

Siyah-Kernel greatly fixes that issue. CM9/CM10 even more, it's probably well below 0.5sec

I think you are just too picky about the phone being built perfect it's not going to happen for any phone. The chances of getting a perfectly built phone with no defects at all is lower than getting some minor defect such as "the gap being too big between the bezel and letting in dust" I can't believe they even let you return it for that reason. Good luck on your quest of finding the perfect phone.

My returns were all due to pink blotch issues with the front camera which is unacceptable. I've never had a phone that takes pictures with a pink blotch. In addition to that pink blotch two of my devices also had large gaps. Bits of dust actually got stuck under the screen which, again, is unacceptable for a £500 phone. Samsung must ensure the bezel and screen are correctly sealed so that dust does not build up in inaccessible areas. I've also never had a phone where I could see black dots and whirls on the screen when viewing YouTube videos at night. I'd rather have blacks that are not so deep but are consistent in colour.
Thing is, general build quality of phones is going down whilst prices are going up. It's inevitable.
Love the phone, not noticed any bugs or faults at all. No crackling when playing back audio via headphones

No kernel fixes it. I've tried every single one available on the development section. They are all the same. 1.5 seconds wasted every time you turn on the screen.

Hi,
Potential buyer here. I'm really holding back due to my experience with the LTE S3 a few months ago.
I've had weak wifi signals, RAM eat up, and very very poor battery. Was on stock then rooted to remove bloatware.....Still bad
Any one experienced anything like this with Note II?

The very reason I got the Note II was the problems you listed with the S3 and trust me the Note II has none of those issues. It's better than the S3 in every way imo, couldn't be happier The S3's ram problems was really driving me crazy but now I have almost always 1gb ram free, no wifi problems and brilliant battery life. If you enjoy Samsung devices this is probably their best one so far
Great! Good to hear..............
I can't see how the Note II can have those problems as well.....Now comes down to the color....
If you dont' mind me asking, what color did you choose and why?
I've always had white phones.......but looking to explore new options

I bought the titanium grey one and my sister has the white one. They both look good so just go with whatever color you like the most Not much help though Check them out in your local retailer, it's always better to see them for real before making a decision. I really only chose the grey one since I felt it was more masculine but again, the white one looks pretty nice

Hi,
I am also a potential buyer of this phone but I am afraid of my past experience with Galaxy Note (original). That phone had issues like
1. Overheating
2. Color banding
3. Charging problems
The first two problems were not very uncommon. Any advice will be appreciated.
In regards to performance it is blisteringly quick.
However sadly my handset is plagued with issues.
Earpiece buzzes as if it is clipping
Rear speaker also buzzes as if it is clipping
Screen has some weird ghosting/trailing
Reception is rarely above 2 bars, previous handset was fine
And the S Pen is just mental
I'm fairly confident I received a duff unit out of the many good ones.
Replacement handset is coming soon.
Do let us know when you receive the new unit.
How is the battery life?
issues ? hmmm
touch wizz lag
when i ask s-voice for weather for my country. he says weather for orlando, portland, always
sound quality with headphones is very normal. no compare with beats audio from one x

Two phones ago I enjoyed a white phone. The past 23 months I've used the Desire HD, which is brown. I'm looking forward to picking up the marble white Note 2 this Friday. Yeah Baby!
`Once you go white...'
I ordered two GT-N7100. They are beautiful, work great and the battery is surprisingly very powerful. After using it lightly for one full day, next morning my wife had still 87%.
At one point one of the two phones was overheating and consuming battery excessively. I turned out I had an app synchronizing in a loop. As soon as I disabled it, all was normal again.
Received my Note II today. It is excellent. Very fast so far.

So I bit early last week on a N4 16gb when they first went available again, and since then it seems like the people who are receiving the last batch of the initial stock are posting reviews and Impressions of the device and aren't totally smitten. Whether it be rattling, the glass back, overheating, buzzing in earpiece and non-optimization of 4.2 it was scaring me a little.
What i was wondering, was which phones people felt were the best option for T-mobile. The keys i was taking into account were:
•strong processor (min. Dual core)
•decent to big battery
•high res. Screen (and at least 4.3")
•good video/gaming playback
•decent volume (doesn't feel tiny on headphones on high)
•should be semi safe with updates for next 2 years.
I am in the middle of a mobile contract with a Htc Radar 4g, and its just not enough for me and leave me wanting. So am looking for a phone that could potentially survive at least another 2 years. I was thinking of options like the note II, gsIII, HTC one international (w/ non-gba card), gnex. The only thing i will rule out is the iPhone because i have a PC, no offense to iPhone users.
So tell me your opinions and views.....if this thread should be moved elsewhere i allow the moderators to move it otlr let me know and let me know how to move it.
Thanks in advance

I think you should think about whether you actually care about these things.
Rattling - basically non-existant, you can't even hear it unless you litterally shake your phone right next to your ear repeatedly.
Glass Back - This is user preference
overheating - pretty sure this only occurs during benchmarking?
buzzing in earpiece - I dunno about this
non-optimization of 4.2 - i'm sure all phones are getting 4.2 eventually so this part might not even apply specifically to the Nexus 4.
I've now lived with a 16gb N4 for about five days and I think it's the best phone on Tmo by a country mile.
Like you, I upgraded from an HTC Radar (actually liked that phone quite a bit), but I carefully tested all of the contenders currently available on Tmo and available unlocked. I opted for the N4 from Google Play.
I guess there may be a rattle but I honestly didn't notice it until I read about it (and I'm still not sure I hear it like some hear it). I've been shocked at how fast and buttery smooth Jelly Bean is. It really is awesome.
Hardware feels more elegant than other Android devices I've felt... Screen is beautiful and battery life has been fine for me (lasts a full day of moderate use).
I dunno. Maybe it's still honeymoon but I'm happy with it!
N4 rocks for me on T-Mobile!

I just came from the HTC Radar and the Nexus 4 is an amazing update, not even looking back
I agree with the rest of them. N4 is the best, and I came from an International Galaxy SIII (i9300).
N4 had two updates in the first week I got it. Guess how many OFFICIAL updates my Galaxy SIII has had in 6 months? 1.
N4 by far thanks to Tmo's 3G network, on ATT it is a little less desirable (~3Mbps download is downright average) but I would NEVER consider getting a phablet like the note and I prefer stock android to any skinned version.
I'd rock an N4

The n4 is all of those things you are asking for.
To address your gripes:
Rattling: it's the auto focus mechanism. Many phones do this, is meant to happen. You probably won't notice it unless you are looking for it.
Buzzing: I've heard about this, my phone doesn't have the issue.
Glass back: personal preference
Overheating: I have been playing games, no heat issues to report.
The only thing that has been happening, which was also happening on my GNex with 4.2 is a rare soft boot crash. The X pops up out of nowhere. I would imagine an ota will fix it.
Glad to get home from work (posted this while on break) and to see that there have been several replies, and without any infighting at that. Good for this thread, pat yourselves on the back ladies and gents.
To follow up on a few things, I loved my Radar when I first got it, HTC makes excellent phones, and many people (not super high end phone people) were surprised by how nice the screen was, just dismayed by the side...the unfortunate drifting island that is windows 7.5 is what made me start looking for a replacement. As well as the ability to easily recoup the money that I would spend on an N4.
To those of those that touted how much they liked the N4, have you had any issues at all. I know some touched on not having the same issues that i mentioned. The yellow tinted screen is something else I have seen mentioned. Of those who have the phone how many are from THE 1ST BATCH of sales. Am curious to see if there is a chance that most of the problems were with the 1st batch, or possibly foreign made batches.
It looks like it is going to to be a good match, but still want to hear more and from people who haven't posted.
For those that came from the sIII, note or gnex, what do you like more about the N4 through your use already.....and any suggestion on cases?
Your in the Nexus 4 forum asking about the best phone for tmobile. I wander how this will play out...
The only main issue that you need to debate if you can handle it with the nexus is the buzzing/ crackling noise from earpeice. Some say it's doesn't matter, because they can't hear it, but some phone have it worse then other. I have two nexus 4 here and one is not noticeable, while the other is quite loud. Also Yellowing spot on the phone when it gets warm which happen when you play game or watch a hd movie for a bit. The yellow spot is most likely a hardware issue, it's not the same as a yellow tint which you may also get.

It seems from reading that you either get the the yellow spots or the yellow tint, if anyone is getting the yellow tint, is it consistent or off and on, and do you think they will call for a recall due to any of these issues?
Note 2 IS THE BEST at the moment in terms of specs
But N4 is still a good choice, more budget friendly AND it may lose in specs on paper, but it has yet to crash and is SILKY SMOOTH.
also not to bash on note 2, but my friend just got it and i had a few minutes to play with it....but after using pure android (came from sg2), note 2 felt VERY bloated and sometimes slow (note this is on stock)
BTW i have no issues with my phone, but other have said that you can always do a rma thru google. and ofc tmobile honors factory defects as well.

Also although we(n4) have the same CPUs and GPU as the LG optimus G, when the Optimus G is compared with the note 2 they were basically a even match with the note 2 slightly ahead in some of the benchmarks. Now we know the optimus G is one hell of a phone and we should also too right? But with the currently thermal throttling/overheating, we arent even up to the optimus G level yet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSF6zFc6pV0
i know benchmarks dont mean sh1t but same with specs looks good on paper but it doesnt reflect its daily usage.
That's why i said in terms of specs its better. i didnt say that its the best overall.

I think it depends on your taste and needs. I prefer S4 as it is not that big, yet has a marvelous display and is fast enough for my daily use.
I did, am happy!
I did the switch after using Note 2 for over half a year.
I'm very happy with its size (got tired of holding Note 2) and its display.
Once official CM build for I9500 is released, I'm sure I'll be even happier.
Cheers!
As a person who did this, I'll help you decide with some simple questions.
Do you hate warm devices? The S4 gets hot compared to the almost always room temp Note 2.
Do you want to root it? No? Get it if the above doesn't bother you.
Yes? If you stay on stock kernel, then again, get it. If not, you might have some very annoying camera lag issues. If you don't use the camera a lot you'll live with it, but it might ruin some moments, or keep your friends doing awkward faces while the camera loads.

What kind of lag issue? I was debating between the Note 2 and S4 and ended up with an S4. I am very happy with my decision. S4 has no camera lag issues and no issues anywhere else. I'm almost always on my phone doing whatever and no lags....yeah it gets hot from time to time but that's normal if your playing a big graphic and processing hogging game and/or always on the internet uploading and downloading.

I don't have a Note II to tell you the main differences, however I believe you should hold on to your Note until next S comes if you're really willing to change your device . My cellphone before S4 was a Xperia X10 Mini Pro lol (yea, it's from 2010), Note II is still a recent and nice device! However if you really want to change now I'll tell you my experience with GT-I9505:
Pros:
FAST AS HELL! Can run any game on it with no problems
Display is amazing, vivid colors and very sharp quality. Jaw dropping quality IMO.
Slim and light.
Easy to root, good developer forums (at least GT-I9505)
Installed AOSP 4.3 and is even faster now (GT-I9505G = GT-I9505)
Superb camera (dad has a HX-1 camera from Sony, because of the fast processor I was able to take 3-4 photos while he was taking one, however you can't compare quality lol, not that S4 camera is bad, it's one of the best now, but Sony HX-1 is a CAMERA, while S4 is a CELLPHONE)
Sound is fine (will discuss later about this one in *Cons*)
Cons:
Gets really hot
Battery don't last too long (6-9h with moderate usage)
Screen too bright
Speaker placed in the bottom (after using my Nexus 10 with front speakers you notice the difference, I see myself putting my S4 over something without the speaker touching the surface to get better sound)
The personal opinions:
Screen size - Depends of your interest, I found it the perfect size for me (I'm 190cm with huge hands lol)
Beautiful device overall - I think it is at least
Physical "Home" button - I'm looking at you HTC One
That's it, hope it clarifies a little. Closing up:
This review was based on my experience with GT-I9505, I don't know about the GT-I9500, however viewing from developer perspective I'd recommend you getting the GT-I9505, as it's similar to GT-I9505G and has official CM support .

Wow. Thank you guys for all the feedback, I am a pretty small guy to be honest with small hands, that was why I was compelled to get a smaller device without losing any of the software features and the S4 seemed the only viable option to me, however saying that, I think I'd be best off waiting, the overheating seems abit of a problem as I do make long calls daily and the lack of use of custom kernels without the camera bugging up is a bit of a shame as I was looking forward to using it alot. But anyway guys, thanks for the help !!

What kind of lag issue? I was debating between the Note 2 and S4 and ended up with an S4. I am very happy with my decision. S4 has no camera lag issues and no issues anywhere else. It does, but only if you use a custom kernel. The lag gets even worse when using third party apps, sometimes it even reboots.
Stock kernel doesn't cause these issues.

The only time I've seen my S4 lag after a picture is if I have "Night Mode" on. After every picture it would say "processing." Once I turned that off, all the pictures that I've taken just snapped and kept it moving. I also have the review off. No point if your the type to take several pics and just keep the one that you like the most. That's what I normally do.
I still have my non rooted note 2. I had a nightmare reinstalling my back ups the ones on my memory card could be found .Thank for my phone explorer that saved the day for some .
Also Kies didn't work with this at all it days I need a new version which I could find.a whole day wasted so far .(this is one area where iPhone is leaps above.)
Seems to take longer to turn on.
Overall I like it and the back is good non slippery.
Haven't had time to check it all or the pen apps but I few things I notice .
No Polaris office but there's a Polaris viewer only but I can't find it in the apps.no radio.and the my files manager seems complex.
I have a gps app called Osmand from my old note and the maps where on the sd card but it doesn't seem to find it.
In fact only my music and photos where recognized none of the data or backups where recognized.
I'm using nova launcher but the touch wiz is real fast now .
Screen is great too early to tell about battery .
Haven't tested the camera yet .
But one bug thing for me exchange active sync is white and Grey now much better to see.
The one thing that has left a bad taste is the back ups I used my back up pro to my memory card plus even nova back up couldn't be found but Kies has to be rewriten.
Please ask any questions and I'll try to help as I still have my old note.
Also my bookmarks didn't come over using the standard samsung browser en en though it's synced.
Sorry if this post is disjointed just wanted to update you all

Personally.... I will wait for the JB 4.3 update, and see how that changes the Note 2. If it brings it on a par with the Note 3 (except for the hardware differences), then I'll stay with what I have. There really isn't enough innovation to warrant changing from Note 2. Mebbe if I only had a Note.....would be worth the upgrade...but right now...NO. Lets see what JB 4.3 does.

I purchased a note 3 on the 25th (UK release day) paid £620 for it sim free. I personally regret the 'upgrade'
Yeah, it's got a nice display, I like the charging speed, but.. where's pop up browser gone? I love that on my note 2, Samsung have banished it away on the n3.
My main gripe.. Is audio. And the speaker. What are Samsung thinking by placing a small thin speaker on the bottom of the device?
The sound is thin /toppy.. My note 2 is much better.
If you upgrade expecting better audio, you'll be disappointed.
The note 3 has loudness, but it's so thin it's unbearable fully up.
I'm actually selling my note 3 because of it, I feel let down, and realise how good my note 2 actually is now.
Rant over.
Hopefully my impressions will change after time.but I too feel its not worth the upgrade from note 2 unless you are a pen fanatic

Your backups are no longer working because from Android 4.1.2 to the current version on the Note 3 the file system changed. In other words, your backups are still there but in different directories and the phone just cannot find them. You should move them with a file manager...

I'm spreading the word brother. Seriously tho, I just spent big bucks on it, I'm so let down, can't understand Samsungs logic, I'll become a martyr for the cause because I feel strongly about it, sorry but it's been such a let down for me - gorgeous display, crap audio..
Use a headset? Audio from mobiles are always crappy..

Not always. Check out the HTC One. It has AWESOME audio. I even considered the One just for that, and the build quality. Yet here i am with the Note 2 still ^.^ I love my Note 2. Plastic and creaky. It's my baby. Haha.
Thanks for letting us know about the bad speakers. This is a real deal breaker for me
What i want from note3- it is battery cover. I hate that slippery glossy back cover. If i saw one for my note2, I'll definitely grab one!
And of course 4.3 update. Thats all, that interests me. So for now I don't see a good reason to upgrade my device.
And if loud speaker is even worse than note2, hell no for that. My previous decices had dual loud speakers, so sound quality was decent, but I was seriously disappointed in note2 sound quality. Crackling sound drives me crazy! I can't imagine even worse quality then note2...
I'm simply gonna wait till the the note 4 so I'll actually be able to tell the difference.

You can get a faux leather back from ebay . I found this fit the bill perfectly. I'm not convinced about upgrading. Still very happy with note 2.
A metal rim might have swayed me. But having said that it was easy to replace the one I chipped and scratched. Its as good as new.
Again ebay to the rescue.

The product looks trash on their eBay pictures. But looks alright on the picture you posted above.
How is the grip? Slippery or does it give the kind of nice grip you'd expect from "leather"?
Why does touchwiz slows down overtime? I remember the day when i purchase this baby its like no one can beat the smoothness of touchwiz
