[Q] Storage problem L7 - Optimus L3, L5, L7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, i have 2.3GB used space in internal storage, but i can not find that massive folder, i deleted all folders there and its still 350mb free space.. what should i do? mby there is problem with backups with cwm.. idk

Maybe one of your apps is particulary heavy ( chrome / VSCO Cam for example ), or if you're using a ROM with emulated storage, the " old " internal storage is stored in /data/media and it's not shown by file managers directly !

Storage

Using SD maid if found where the heck all my storage was going. Under /storage/emulated the folders /legacy and /0 are exactly the same with all the same stuff in it. Is there 2 of everything in my internal SD? Can I delete one of these folders? I attached a screenshot

For giggles I deleted one. The folder was still there but empty and the other folder is also empty. I'm thinking they are the same just shown twice with different names. Not actually duplicate.

Hmm okay damn. Trying to figure out where this space is going because all I really have is a couple things in the downloads folder and thats it. Another screenshot of my storage in settings kinda further backs my idea

They are not duplicate files... The files are only stored in one location, but each folder has a "link" to them...
Sorta like your computer and creating "shortcuts"
That's all well and good, but...

...even Android's storage manager can't get it right:
Phone:
mako 16GB
rev_11
MAKOZ10o
M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.48
Secure Boot - enabled
Lock State - unlocked
Rooted with (an otherwise) stock ROM (4.2.2 OTA) and Clockwork Mod Touch 6.0.2.3.
I have found four places seeming to be my SD storage:
/sdcard
/storage/sdcard0
/storage/emulated/0
/storage/emulated/legacy
I've attached other screenshots showing how File Expert HD and DiskView treat my storage. CWM 6.0.2.3 also "misinterprets" my storage situation so I can't make more than 2 backups, and if I have 2 then I struggle for space for downloads and apps. I really wouldn't care about this if apps understood it - it makes you wonder how it managed to get released when not only do no apps support it, but Android's own system gets confused!
I've seen posts talk about merging all SD data with /data/media/0 but on my phone (using both File Expert and the new File Expert HD) that's showing up as a file not a folder. Seriously, how do I sort this out? Which is the real folder, why are the other three there, how do I disable this silly "shortcut" thing that's destroying my phone's storage?

Yeah, what originally alerted me to the space issue was when I went to make my second nandroid since installing the 4.2.2 OTA. I made one before and one after the update, then went to make a third in order to have a recent backup before trying to flash the Ubuntu Touch Dev preview but the nandroid failed due to insufficient storage space.

This should explain the "missing" storage. Since you made two nandroid backups and you have quite a lot of apps installed (2.89GB), this will take at least 6 GB of space.
Edit: Nandroid backups don't show on the android storage view.

At the time of taking the screenshots in my first post, I only have one nandroid in order to keep a decent amount of free space. The fact that CWM is also misinterpreting the storage makes me think it's backing up all 4 locations, which means that my nandroid is stupidly big. That coupled with all apps mistaking the 3 mirror locations as actual files results in a huge loss of potential storage space as apps think the device is full when it really isn't.
I should probably also mention that Windows reports the same free/used space numbers as File Expert HD.
All your internal data lies within /data/media/
The contents within that is usually what is visible to the user on a TW ROM. Once you switch to an AOSP ROM a second partition is created in /storage/emulated/0. This is your actual internal memory. Any previous downloads or backups made before installing an AOSP ROM will be located in /data/media/ since that was it's original directory. You can still view the "0" folder in /data/media/ but all your downloads, backups, etc, will be directed to /storage/emulated/0/ by default.

I don't understand what you mean by a "TW ROM" but I haven't changed ROM. I unlocked the bootloader and rooted, but other than a few quick plays with Ubuntu Touch I'm still using the stock ROM (which I return to from Ubuntu via restoring a CWM nandroid). I haven't flashed any Android ROMs at all.
I didn't have the phone long before I got the 4.2.2 OTA update and I didn't check the folder structure before then, but I didn't notice any suspiciously fast drops in free space until after said update.

Can you use a file explorer with root access and check how big is this folder? /data/media/clockworkmod/backup

There you also see the clockworkmod folder and check it's size.

[Info] Flashed 4.2? Can't find your /sdcard data?

Note from the Author -
I am moving on to the N5 now and ditching my S3. I will continue to maintain this thread, however - please do PM me if you think that something needs to be changed or updated in this thread as I doubt I will be answering questions within the thread as much. Please don't PM support questions to me. Only PM updates that need to be made in the thread.
It's been a blast!

I see this question / problem comes up a lot. Rather than retype my answer every time, I have created this thread so I can easily just give people a link to it.
Scenario
You've flashed a 4.2 ROM for the first time coming from 4.1 but Titanium Backup cannot see previous backups on /sdcard and file managers cannot see your /sdcard data. You are concerned you have lost your data.
Or.... You're looking in the storage menu and you notice the total of the "used" should leave you more "free" space
Yes! Have I lost my data?
No
Background info
Older android devices have the below (simplified) layout.
/system - Where the ROM goes (internal memory)
/data - where your apps and app data goes (internal memory)
/sdcard - your sd card (removable media)
The S3 works differently
/system - Where the ROM goes (internal memory)
/data - where your apps and app data goes (internal memory)
/sdcard - your sd card (internal memory)
See that last part? The /sdcard is now on internal memory too. Samsung have actually used the clever FUSE file system, to create the /sdcard mount point (exFAT) inside /data (EXT4). So /sdcard is actually mounted to /data/media. That's how "internal storage" goes down if you install an app or if you take a photo. It all goes into /data at the end of the day.
Back to the problem
With 4.2, /sdcard is no longer mounted to /data/media
Now, It is mounted to /data/media/0
When you use a file manager (or titanium backup) to look in /sdcard, it looks pretty much empty (which it is). Because you're looking in /data/media/0 but all your data is in /data/media
So what to do?
Quite simple and very easy.
Use a file manager with root explorer capabilities. I prefer root explorer but ES* and Solid should manage this too.
Go to /data/media
You should see:
0
legacy
obb
Along with all your other folders. Legacy and 0 are the same. Leaving 0, legacy and obb UNTOUCHED, MOVE all the other folders (which you will notice are all your missing folders and files) into the 0 folder. The only folders that should be left behind are the 3 mentioned above.
That's it. Done.
Anything else to be aware of?
Yes actually, many older recoveries still probably see /data/media as the location of /sdcard, so nandroid backups may end up there instead of /0. For example, often you end up with /data/media/clockworkmod instead of /data/media/0/clockworkmod. Some recoveries have a setting to change the location to /data/media/0 (Such as Philz recovery)
Because the Settings > Storage > sdcard shows the space free and used for /data as "sdcard" but only looks in /data/app, /data/data and /data/media/0 to get the breakdown of what is using the space, you will find that anything just in /data/media will show aup s used space, but the breakdown of apps, pictures, media etc will not show these files so it appears that they do not add up.
Example...
You have:
1 GB apps
1 GB Pictures and Video
4 GB Nandroid (Misc) - but this is in wrong place /data/media
Used space will show 6 GB
But breakdown will show
1 GB apps
1 GB Pictures and Video
0 GB Misc
So it looks like you lost 4 GB. It's a good idea to check /data/media every now and again to ensure nothing goes there by accident.
I hope this helps.
*Since ES have changed their UI a bit, here is a little "How To" locate /data/media using ES.
Open ES File explorer and press the phone with a globe icon in the top left corner.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
Under "Tools" choose "Root explorer" and accept the SuperUser access prompt.
At this pop-up, press back
Press the "/" button (Which means "root directory" in Linux world)
You will now be able to see /data and within there, /media
Here you see the 0, Legacy and Obb folders that I should have and also a ClockworkMod fodler which I shouldn't. You will see otehrs... Move everything except Legacy and Obb into "0".

Thank you!
Quite interesting, but it raises some small questions.
1) How are things mounted in alternative 4.2.x ROMs ? CM 10.1 ? Is the same problem present ?
2) For a way to dual-boot 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 what would be the best / simplest approach expected from a kernel like Siyah or GoogyMax ?
Thanks for this how-to/information! I hope someone will read it and the repeating questions will, maybe not disappear, but getting less.

I assume there will be no issue for dual booting as Siyah for instance creates a new folder in which the 2nd rom is placed. The kernel just has to know where to put this 2nd rom folder (not sure if it makes any difference at all). The only tricky thing will be to link the data for both roms as done by a plugin.

*ES has updated it's UI and isn't as obvious as before how to get to /data/media so see below:
Open ES > menu > tools > root explorer
When prompted, accept root access request
At the top of the screen (you've probably defaulted to sdcard) press the "/" button to get to the root of your device. From here you can browse to /data/media
Just wanting to check I've got it right before I flash sentinel 4.6

No, never.
/data/media has always been /sdcard. The 0 comes from 4.2 because it adds multi-user support and 0 is the default user. So /data/media/0 becomes /sdcard
/extSdCard is not affected by this at all.
So if I'm using megawipe to wipe everything off my internal sd card I don't need to move anything about once the rom is flashed

There would be nothing to move. Just ensure you back up photos etc to your computer first.
Make sure you have a rom to flash on your external sd too. I think megawipe wipes the ROM too.
Although personally I think its easier just to move the files
Reason I'm planning on using mega wipe is because everytime I uninstall an app it still leaves folders behind. Not sure which ones to delete so gonna go for a fresh start and reinstall the apps from titanium
Thanks for the help anyways.

Hmm...Seeing as someone is finally concerned about issues with the storage in 4.2,I'll first ask my question here before I move on to creating another thread,as I can't find anything no matter how much I search.
So,I was on UltimaROM 12 and, well,it freaked out some day (Dunno why,but it hadn't been working 100% well for quite a few days in addition to being slow like any Samsung ROM-The blame is on Samsung, not Kryten) and I thought I'd give AOSP another chance. So I installed Carbon ROM with Temasek's kernel and fell in love. The phone puts stock S3s to shame now. However, seeing as converting a 32gb microSD to FAT32 from exFAT is a loooooong process,I found this beauty and thought I could finally enjoy AOSP on the S3.However,now no music player finds my music, which is in the external SD card.PowerAmp for example (And any other I tried in fact) searches only in /storage/sdcard0 and /storage/emulated/0,without caring about what's in /storage/sdcard1.So that's about it,but as I listen to A LOT of music on the go,this drives me crazy. What's strange is that file managers and any other media application see the data in my external storage just fine,so eg in Gallery all my photos/videos are there.
Can anyone help before I resort to using binding commands (Or apps like FolderMount) to try and fix it?I just hope I won't have to format to FAT32,because I tend to watch HD movies on the phone and, well,i would kiss the movies bye-bye.
Thanks in advance guys!
Its not really related to this thread but most aosp rom / kernel combinations do not support exFAT so you may have to go to FAT32
Since exFAT is closed source, I would prefer to stay away from add on support modules
Its not long process to go to fat32. Copy data off. Format. Copy data back

Folder mount should work for you if your rooted, does a fine job.
I'm rooted & download foldermount. However I can't seem to find the files to mount to my ext memory.
Games like Candy Crush or Puzzle Trooper, I can't find any files in android/data or android/obb (this folder is totally empty). What should I do?
I Have downloaded file manager to view my system files but I can't seem to mount the apk from data/app in the / memory.
Need help.
Thanks!

For games like Real Football or some other gameloft games that are usually huge in size like above 500mb for the apk, how does foldermount help me with the memory other than only move the data from internal memory android/data or android/obb?
If I use a file manager, I found the apk in /data/data on the phone memory instead & the com.data files etc on /data/app lib.
Anybody knows what I should do with such apps?
Thanks.
That's why you use FolderMount, basically all the huge data is moved to SD card and Android is being fooled to thinking that the data is still on the internal memory. After doing this it looks a little bit strange in Storage info in Settings, as for example my phone has: Total space: around 9GB, Used space: 13GB, Free space: 6GB. I instaled multiple heavy games and all their data is stored on the SD card, you just need to specify which data you want to move.
Edit: Sorry I didn't fully understand your post. You meant that the actuall apk file is of a huge size, I don't think that Folder Mount will help in this situation, as you can only mount folders from the /mnt/sdcard folder. But to be honest all of the games I have store data in either /mnt/sdcard/Android/data or obb folder, and I believe that most games on the Marketplace do the same.

Exactly, all gameloft and ea games are stored in obb or data so FolderMount does wonders. I bought the pro version and it gets the job done.

[Q] SD Partition

I already partitioned my sd card months ago but this totally bothered me. I 2nd partition is 1gb and when i open settings->apps->manage applications, it still shows that my internal memory is only 190mb. What seems to be the problem?

Are you using any mods?
Sent from my Galaxy Pocket with rooted stock ROM
There is no problem here
use link2sd to mount your 2nd partition then you can link apps to free up internal storage so you can install more apps
your total internal storage will not increase - only available storage if you link apps to sd card that are currently on internal or have lib files on internal
on most deodex custom roms after you have installed around 80 apps you will have between 30mb & 60mb of free internal storage depending on the data & cache of apps

your total internal storage will not increase - that's impossible without repartitioning the internal storage & taking space from other internal partitions which would be stupid as you would take space from boot partition
an sd card partition is on your sd card so you split the total storage of your sd card into two therefore your total internal storage hasn't increased - you haven't put a bigger internal hd in
your 2nd partition size is displayed in the info in link2sd
what it does is take apps in internal space & place them in the 2nd partition - it then leaves a link file where the app was so basically the app still behaves like it's on internal but it's not
No, i understand. Well, that would be all. No problem anymore.

using Link2SD doesn't increase your internal memory/RAM ... Link2Sd makes it easy for Android 1.6+ users with root privileges on their phone to move applications to the "SD card".

Do you mean something like this?

Its possible with amarullz script
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310309
Its a script that you put in your init.d folder.
But i cannot ensure that works on every rom/kernel kombo.
With hells fusion 50# kernel + evo x3 rom is it working (my daily use)
Want to see internal storage increase? Modify the ramdisk to mpunt the sdcards 2nd partition as /data and BAM there ya go

Yea, if your SDcard not partitioned yet, the rom will bootloop

If you modify the fstab correctly and make userdata at least 1GB you should be fine. I've partirioned my sdcard to use external sd, cache, system, and userdata giving me much more space to install roms and apps. I'd recommend a more powerful sdcard to take away the lag

[Q] System memory became small?

Hi all,
I noticed in my N9005 internal memory(system) became small/shrink after i flashed stock rom coming from cm11. Internal memory itself its fine because i still have free space 25gb from 32gb but when i used root file manager (root explorer) to copy apk to system/app its failed.
Btw, i also noticed my phone have 3 folder that have same app and file like sdcardO and under folder emulated there are folder O and legacy. How can i increase this system memory?. Please see the attached pic and thanks.
This is a partition, its only 2GB of size, which is normal.
