In line microphone for car install - Nexus 7 (2013) General

So I have my nexus 7 installed in my car all nice like. I am using the 3.5mm audio jack for simultaneous audio out as well as microphone in. Basically same wiring you have with an in line mic on a pair of headphones. And I want the mic to use on the home screen to use Google experience launchers "OK google" hot phrase while I'm driving. About half the time it works and half the time it doesn't and reverts back to using the internal microphone. Does anyone have any luck getting the mic to work all the time whole plugged into the audio jack.

Thanks! Ya i'll post a picture of my build when i get time, i posted links to my cables. The audio out and mic in work wonderfully, about half the time... It's definately something in the the android OS that determines when it uses it's build in mic and when it uses the plugged in mic. just not sure how

nice, i'm interested in trying this out too!

Handsfree calls using headphone jack + internal microphone

One of the features I miss of my Hero that my Nokia N95-8GB had was the ability to plug in a standard pair of headphones (or 3.5mm audio out cable) and use the built in microphone to make hands free calls.
I use the phone a lot in my car whilst driving to and from work to listen to music and would love for it to recognise the standard cable (which it does - indicated by a pair of headphones rather than the headphones/mic icon used to indicate the presence of the hands-free headphones) and be able to automatically answer inbound calls using the internal microphone.
Is there an app for this kind of thing - I'm guessing it is something that is/can be controlled by software?
have you tried it actually? because i use my ipod headphones quite often and it works as expected, sound from headphones and i hold phone closely to my mouth as its using internal mic.
Really not sure what you are looking for. If you plug the standard HTC headphones in using the jack on the top then you can use of the built in mike they have to answer calls.
Or have I missed something?
I've also done exactly what you're asking with my car. I've had my phone in a car holder w/ an audio cable from the Hero's headphone jack to my car's line in jack. I was able to answer calls just fine, and the person on the other end could hear me. (And it was just a standard stereo audio cable, my car doesn't have any sort of built in mic)

im doing the same thing but people on the other end are complaining about an echo of thir voice. I figure its coming from thier voice being picked up by the internal mic. Anybody have any ideas? how can i cut the internal mic while theyare talking. would a cheap wired headset work using its external mic? i could cut the headphones off and splice it into the line in.
I have had my G2 since late September and quickly found out by accident that it does use the internal mic when a headphone is plugged in.
Mine is a simple adaptor from the 3.5 mm into the RCA in my car. If I have the volume up too high, it echoes. If I have the volume down low, I can have a perfect handsfree conversation.
With the headphones I have had problems. In the car, I have the phone laying down and the mic side up. If I am holding the phone in my hand, I have no problems. Shirt pocket, ok. Pants pocket, no way.

Record from head phone jack?

My wife is fifteen weeks pregnant and we just found the heart beat with a at home fetal doppler.
I have the male to male connector cable, is there any program that will allow me to record from the head set jack like a microphone?
Want to send the babies heart beat to family
Thanks!

Except for the fact that it is a dual way allowing for in line microphones meaning input as well. However, finding a cable that has the correct connecting pins may be very difficult.
Edit - if it were me, I would simply play the heartbeat over a speaker (your stereo?) and use the microphone of the phone to record that. Or, record it into your computer using the mic-in jack.
Not sure if it is the same jack type, but the iPhone's standard earbuds have a mic built into them also, you just plug it in and have sound/mic in the buds?
Just a thought. I haven't tried it because I am at work and my iphone buds are at home.

keep built-in mic active when 3.5 mm jack is plugged

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if it's possible to have built-in mic active when a cable is plugged into the 3.5 mmjack. For example...I connect the hd2 to the car stereo and if I get a call i need to disconnect the cable because the built-in mic is inactive.

Mine works when I plug mine into my car with a standard 3.5mm stereo cable.
Does the cable you're using have 1 or 2 black stripes on the plug?
i agree, this feature was one of the most pleasant surprises for me with the HD2.
on my kaiser, i used a special HTC headset that had an inline microphone (which i snapped on to my shirt collar) and this headset allowed me to plug in a standard 3.5mm stereo jack, which my car audio was plugged in to. this was the best solution at the time for the kaiser that allowed me to keep all cables connected and be able to use the car's speakers and have a working microphone all at once.
but with the HD2...WOW!!! i plugged in my car stereo's 3.5mm stereo jack straight into the HD2 and put on some music and started driving. a call came in while driving and i just pressed answer because i was still used to my kaiser set up (i had owned the HD2 for less than 24 hours at this point so wasn't quite used to it yet).
i started hearing the other party and i started speaking. and the other party could hear me. and THEN it hit me...i was like, holy hell!!!...what am i speaking in to? how come the other party can hear me?
great features, great phone!

I think it has two stripes since it's a stereo jack. I'm not sure but i think initialy I was able to speak in the car with the leo plugged into the stereo. May be some app I've installed later changed something?!?
the built in mic will stay active unless u have a cable with 4 connections (3 rings on the plug), a regular stereo cable has 2 rings. I've been using this type of setup for a couple of years with my previous phone, a.k.a. iphone. The mic is pretty sensitive and can pick up your voice rather well. I have my hd2 clipped to my sunvisor for easy access and routed the wiring inside the windshield molding down under the dashboard to the stereo and it works pretty good.

Headphone Jack Issue

I am interested in purchasing this phone, but I read there is an issue with not being able to use the microphone while headphones are plugged in. I hook my current Android into my car stereo through my headphone jack and when people call, it uses the speaker phone to talk while I hear people on the car stereo. Would I still be able to do this on the Fascinate, or does that also disable the speaker phone mic, or are they the same mic?
im not sure what you are asking but i ahve no problems with it, i plug in my headphones with the mic in them and they work great, use them for listening to music and talking and love it
He means he has his phone plugged into the speakers in his car through the aux jack, and then when he gets a call he uses the speakerphone option to talk, and incoming voice audio plays on his car stereo. I do not think this will currently work on the fascinate...
You've heard right. It blocks speakerphone when headphones/aux are plugged in. It's quite a pain considering I use it as my music player in the car. It also ignores bluetooth while plugged in as well.
I got used to unplugging it when I get a call, though.
This is correct, and was almost a deal breaker for me. However, the car dock has a function where you don't need to plug in the AUX, only the micro-USB, and you can charge it as well as have audio output (the audio goes through the charging port, then is output by a 3.5mm output on the dock, and finally to your car's AUX in). This feature isn't enabled yet, but once Froyo is released it will be - and then we should be able to take calls over our car speakers without the mic being muted.
Just something to keep in mind,

So Indy, we can't use the car dock the way it was intended until froyo drops? That means I can't hear my nav thru the speakers while docked or any music?
Sent from my Fascinate
As I understand it, yes. There is a sticker on the port letting you know that it won't function properly until the release of 2.2. I'm still waiting on my dock to get here in the mail, but I've seen several threads elsewhere where this is discussed.
I don't think the dock has room, but if it does, you could still run an AUX cable from the headphone jack to your car's input, and have nav and music through the speakers - you just wouldn't be able to take calls with it connected because of the mic being muted with an AUX cable connected. Once 2.2 is released, as I understand, you'll be able to do it all.
Thanks for the help. It looks like ill be waiting before I make a purchase. I use slacker radio too much in my car and my deck doesn't have an auxiliary in, its old school tape deck so I have a device that plugs in the tape deck.

Am I the only one here who tries to use the Epic in a car, in a dock...??

Is anyone else trying to use a dock in their car to listen to music??
I'm on CM7 and when you use the dock in the car.....it removes all bass from the audio stream. Unless my car for some reason doesn't go through it's own amp. when using the "aux" in connection.....
I'm so frustrated at the moment, I bought a phone with all these cool hopes and dreams..
now 1.5 years later, it's ALMOST perfect (no thanks to ****sung) (thanks to DEV's!!) but I go put it in the car dock and the sound is just awful
Just wondering if anyone else has had any success ..
Using stock CM7 kernel or Shadow? From what I understand, bbelos was able to crack the code with Shadow, but maybe the devs were able to port it over to the stock one...

I'm using Shadow.
The dock audio works, it just sounds awful, no bass very tinny.
I should add that if you take it out of the dock and plug in an audio cable to the headphones jack and into the aux in of the car it sounds wonderful, full bass great lows and awesome highs.
From what I understand this is something that samsung made the dock do. What a horrible idea on their part.
I use my CM7 Epic in the car all the time. I don't even use the car stereo anymore. When I started using CM7 and realized the audio redirect doesn't work I went back to using what I did before we got Froyo. My stock car stereo doesn't have bluetooth so I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-Remote-Stereo-Bluetooth-Gateway/dp/B00170KUM0
It's a bluetooth gateway that uses A2DP to transmit the audio. I also use Tasker to automatically turn on bluetooth when I put the phone in the dock. The phone connects within a few seconds and everything works beautifully. It actually seems to amplify the sound some when using the gateway. I see it's like 90 bucks on amazon now. It was 30 when I bought it so i dunno. You could probably find one cheaper somewhere. But anyway, that's what I do and have had no problems.
using the bluetooth gateway is a good idea. though, imo, A2DP lacks decent quality. I have really only done A2DP streaming with Kensington's LiquidAUX receiver and the Motorola S9 headphones. I would be tempted to try the BB receiver if it was cheaper.
Samsung really dropped the ball on the desk dock. no data when the phone is in the dock while connected to USB? WTF Samsung. I would love to put another one of these in my car if it worked correctly. does the real car dock have the same issues as the desk dock? I am definitely not gonna pay $30+ for a car dock for a phone thats been out 18mo.

I actually have a bunch of these, however it just isn't the same sound quality as hard wired.
^yes I agree, BT (A2DP) sound is technically compressed, and combined with a poor DAC, just isn't going to sound as warm as coming directly from the headphone jack (where the DAC has already done its work).
I just spent some time screwing around trying to find the differences in sound between the phone mounted in the dock and using the speaker out, streaming the music over BT with my Kensington LiquidAUX (outputs to 3.5mm), and plugging directly into the phone (w/ Voodoo sound).
Handsdown, best was when hooked directly into the phone. Second place went to the dock, and third was BT. I've just come to the conclusion that Samsung just didn't put any effort into this dock, and the actual DAC inside the dock, just sucks. This is all just going on the assumption that the audio coming out of the USB is digital, and the digital-analog conversion is being done in the dock itself. Seems like the simplest explanation that the output from the USB port is a digital output. My car stereo is a 2008 Mazda Bose system with a 3.5in AUX input.
Now my question is, where can I get a USB-[single]RCA so I can use the phone as a digital output connection with a decent DAC...

I actually bought a mini amp for a car just to put inbetween the dock out and my aux in......thinking it'd solve the problem.
Sadly while the sound was awesome, there was a ton of static and other noise even with a ground loop isolator in the mix.
If you figure out a way to get good sounding audio out of the dock while in a car......pleaseee post it up!! For now I guess it's back to bluetooth...it's better then having to manually plug in the sound and power each time i get in....
I just use fm transmitter w/ DSM manager n voodoo control plus, Bass is up bumpin.

Eh, the BT gateway is not going to give you the same as hard wired. Nothing will beat hardwired. I don't notice enough difference for it to matter, although my car is all stock. I'm big into home stereo, but never cared to spend the money in my car. I don't spend enough time in there to justify it. But to each his own, just a suggestion. Mine sounds better to me through BT than the dock, but that could be something with my stereo.

This is my main reason for the BT gateway. It defeats the purpose of having a dock, if I have to plug in cable separately. Now I just throw the phone in the dock, slide the connector over, start whatever music app I feel like using and I'm on my way.
Are you using the stock radio in your car? The Epic dock output is not amplified, so if the input on your stereo is made for a amplified output (headphone output for example) then you will have a tinny sound.
Most aftermarket receivers will work with both unamplified outputs and amplified outputs, for example on my Pioneer MVH-P8200BT there is not much difference between with the dock and straight from the headphone output (without Voodoo Sound of course).

I assume that the AUX in for some reason doesn't run through the car's amplifier ??

So you can confirm that the sound is just as good as the headphone out? I have been on the fence about getting a dock, i have an older Pioneer deck & its sound is grate with the headphone jack.
also does any one know of a way to get voodoo with the dock, or is that just imposable?

According to supercurio, at least regarding my transformer, it is all about the headphone jack hardware that is why bt output does not get voodoo controls on og transformer, i assume the same is true with epic..

It definitely runs through the amplifier, however it is probably calibrated for a headphone output and not a Line-Out output. The only time I have experienced the "tinny" sound is if I hook up headphones to the dock.

As I said, on my system there is little difference.. Granted, the speakers I have are not exactly high-end, they are aftermarket and better than most stock speakers.
I have confirmed this by testing the dock on my Monitors. Volume and sound is very close. On my monitors the dock is a bit louder, not quite as clear with a bit too much midbass and over-emphasized highs - slightly compressed sounding. Lower bass levels are nearly identical.
I do not notice this in my car whatsoever. But my monitors cost 5x as much as the component set in my car, so that is expected.
As far as I know there is no way to use Voodoo Sound with the dock.
I have the CleanGB ROM installed and use the stock car dock. I get perfect audio output to my car stereo using a 3.5mm mic -to- RCA cord.

Stock Epic / stock stereo
I have (almost) completely stock Epic (only non-rooted GPS_Fix.zip) and stock stereo (Lexus ES350) and Samsung Car Dock. I use the Dock Sound Redirect app from the Market to direct sound from E4G thru USB to dock stereo phone jack to Aux in on car stereo. The overall sound is fine; not the same as a high-end home stereo but as good as the car stereo & CD. The volume is slightly lower due to non-amped input. Nav audio also runs through this route. Perhaps the issue is stock vs CM7? The Sammy Car Dock works fine for me with the Sound Redirect app.

J3ff, I feel your pain. I bought the Epic shortly after it came out, and the car dock about a year ago. There's a world of difference in audio quality between the headphone jack and the USB audio output that the dock uses. I've used the dock on Froyo, Gingerbread, stock and custom ROM's, it doesn't matter. Haven't tried Shadow kernel on CM7 yet.
The problem becomes even more apparent if you're using something like Voodoo Sound, which affects the headphone jack output but not the USB audio output. I believe Voodoo (and probably DSP Manager, etc., but I can't confirm that) affect the audio on the DAC on the headphone jack, but since the process of converting audio for the USB output is different (and it's not using the Wolfson WM8994 as far as I know)...
I ended up reverting to a $5 cheapo generic car dock that attaches to an A/C vent so I could still use the headphone jack for audio output
