Motorola Open Source Software for KitKat - Moto X General

I didn't see it posted anywhere else, but apparently Motorola has released the Open Source software for KitKat for the X...
https://plus.google.com/+GopinathPalaniappan/posts/9PmrgBiV9n6

It was good... Come new roms, new kernels now:highfive:

Forgive my ignorance... But what exactly does this mean? It sounds great, for sure, but what does this mean for custom roms and such?

Instructions and files on setting up a build environment for Moto X. Look at the build number in "About Phone" to see if your carrier version is available.
Current Verizon release = 13.11.1Q2.X-69-3

Means people can compile Paranoid Android finally. Too bad it's only the DEV editions, I feel if it has bootloader unlock ability, then it should have opensource software. Bet the little carrier differences will reek havoc for a bit. Least it's going somewhere!

Awesome, I was asking for this last week

So the Dev version is different in more ways then just unlocked bootloader?

Not true! Use safestrap!

I wonder if this means that we could find the appropriate hooks to make Active Display, Touchless Controls, and the other Motorola props work on third party moto ROMS?

According to the conversation on that Google+ page, the kernel source is identical between the unlocked bootloader and dev editions. You just need to pick the right one. I just checked and my non-Dev T-Mobile hardware with unlocked bootloader matches the kernel source as posted.

so does this mean we could use safestrap to install a custom rom from the source we build?

I thought the carrier build were build specific. When I unpaked the Sprint boot.img, it had a Carrier=Sprint line somewhere and I've never seen that before. I thought wrong.:silly:

Here there is others builds:

1.6/2.0/2.1 with the kernel that HTC just released?

I was wondering why its been so quite after HTC released the new kernel for the Sprint Hero, I thought that was the missing link that was needed for complete 1.6/2.0/2.1 roms?
It hasn't been quiet.
Also the kernel that HTC released needs to be ported to 2.6.29 to fully work with 1.6+.
All this info is on the forum & easily obtainable.

I just thought we would see some 1.6/2.0/2.1 releases now that the kernel was released, that's all
There's been 1.6+ releases for a while...
Let me elaborate a little here:
This kernel that was released is not a magic bullet, it allows us to see what code needs to be changed to get the correct Kernel to run these newer versions. It also lets us make any performance changes we can find.
All of the changes need to be put into the current kernel source, making it a .29 or whatever we need.
It has been fairly quite, we aren't seeing tons of Roms being thrown out to the market, thankfully. Our devs are taking all the time they need to make sure everything works and is stable. We should see some big stuff happen in the next week or so.

Droid Eris 2.6.29 kernel source available

It seems that HTC developer page has the source code for the 2.6.29 Droid Eris (codename Desire) kernel available. Maybe this could be usefull for you developers!

No it doesn't but it does mean a lot more roms for root users
Some people are having trouble seeing it on the site. I upped it to mediafire. Here ya go...

This is what we need to get OC'ing working right?

This is already in all the current ROMs. Now we can start using modified kernels that allow for OC and the like.

Yeah that's what I was thinking by I didn't know for sure. But why couldnt we OC before if we already if we already had the kernal?

I don't think you understand what this is. This isn't a rom or a patch or an update. This is the source code to the Eris's kernel. We didn't have this before, we were waiting on HTC to release it.
Do a google search for linux kernel to get a better idea of what a kernel is.

The runnable form of the kernel can't be changed (much very easily, at least). Having the source code renders making real changes to the kernel feasible.
very nice. i cannot wait to come back from vacation to see our phone finally OC'd
YESS! Finally
So this wont help find a vulnerability for us leak users?
It may help find a hole in 2.1 for leakers... But dont get your hopes up to high.. The 1.5 source didn't yield much in the way of root when it was released. Im more excited to possibly see OC on the Eris!!
I'm not a leaker, but there's a thread in General that talks about the incredable being rooted from just the source. That's where you'll probobly find a hole.

So few people have the tablet at the moment, suspect that's the hold up. It still hasn't been released to the rest of the US.
How much can you do without the source code?
There's not much you can do without the source. The xoom only got it's first rom a few days ago and it does not have all that many changes. Once we get the kernel source, we should start seeing some custom kernels(for overclocking and stuff) but that's about it.

That's what I figured. I'm sure you can change around a few small things, but for the most part didn't expect what I'd consider a true "custom rom."
Will probably have to wait for Ice Cream Sandwich.
I think we can thank google for that as they have chosen not to release the AOSP for honeycomb. And who knows when samsung will release the kernel source. I would have thought they would have released it by now.

I'm not exactly sure what the law is but they will have to release it eventually.. The linux kernel is under the GPL, which means that any modifications to it are, without question, also under the GPL. Therefore, they have to make their version of the kernel open source at some point. Does anyone know how long they have to do so?
Does any one know if the retail version of the galaxy tab have an unlocked boot loader and if can be rooted? cant seem to find that info ne where. if it has a locked bootloader you can forget abt custom roms till the bootloader can be unlocked

Umm, its negligible. To start a thread in development you need to have created something for other people to test and use. Posting a link to a website which developers probably check every day doesn't really count.

I am in agreement here; this should not be in dev as it is just a link to the kernel released, no actual development is being done. It belongs in general. Plus, you guys need to stop bickering damnit! Time to start this thread with a clean slate.
So can an overclock kernel be developed from this and will it be?

We all ready have kernels based on this source. Have had for a while, it just released on a different website
"rmk40: People keep mentioning the kernel source on htcdev.com. They didn't release anything new that wasn't already on developer.htc.com."

I assume that you are rooted. I'm not sure what kernels are currently working on gb ota. I've been using sense for a few months so I'm not up-to-date with what is working on stock rooted roms.

[Q] Now Android MM is out for while, anybody working on any new ROMS?

Hey guys was just wondering if there any developers who are working on some new ROMS for our MXP as it seems very quiet in the development sections of the forums, couple of variations of stock rom and that's pretty much it.
Was expecting for development to pick up after the MM but its been VERY quiet.
Not a complaint just wondering if there are things going on behind the curtains like development being done or some CM13 or anything along those lines.

Having MM OTA out is not enough.
Not much can be done until Motorola will release the kernel source

They are required to release any changes to the kernel they have made due to the GPL license that the linux kernel is protected by. so its not a matter of if but when.
MM and now kernel source released, and still, slow as hell. Sucks. I thought this phone would be one of the most active in development, was i wrong.
