Noob questions thread
I think this should be re-named NOOB Questions Thread, but being new to Samsung and stylus input (I've only used the wife's Nexus a bit before, and my office is still on blackberry) the simple Qs, and patience of users to answer them, have been helpful. I was definitely getting frustrated with my magazines, because that upward swish should have been opening Google search. I'll be killing magazines and see how that goes. To me, magazines belong int he google play store.
I would sure appreciate a google experience version of the 10.1. Samsung offering their pen add-ons as apps rather than a modified OS would be an improvement. But I'm quite happy so far, and the help on this and similar threads is most appreciated.
It is my first Android tablet...thanks for the responses, but none was my answer...
If you use ezPDF and make a sticky note on the PDF, the size of the icon of the sticky note is so small!! I wanted to see if we could make that bigger, but I don't think there's is a way...
Thanks on the freeze/stop advice, but it looks like root is required to remove entirely. I keep triggering the silly MyMag screen when I really want google search which is what I expect an upward swipe from home will give me.
^ you can also move your google search widget somewhere in the middle...but really, it's annoying when I hit the home button it switches to my magazine

If you of you guys currently have you nexus 7, can you tell me how well the browser performs, and while you are at it can you try websites like engadget,com or theverge.com and see if you have any lag on those websites. Thanks
Anything else we can test for you?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
well, that is my main concern at this point, and if you do have your nexus, i would gladly like you to try this thanks.
By browser I assume you mean Chrome. I don't experience lag with those sites in particular but I have noticed an occasional tic when scrolling in general even in this app

Thanks, and do you have 4.1.1, cause i hear that helps a little bit. Is that tic annoying by any chance or not really?
Chrome performs really well in my opinion, no complaints. Any browser in particular you were interested in?

Chrome in landscape
I've got a similar question that I'd like to pose.
I'm currently quite disappointed in where the nav bar is placed when using Chrome in landscape mode. See the screenshot below.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
For whatever reason, the nav bar is placed horizontally along the bottom. This uses up a lot of the valuable vertical viewing space, leading to a lot more scrolling in websites than I would have expected.
Below is a screenshot of Chrome in landscape mode on my Galaxy Nexus. There, Google smartly moves the nav bar to the right, to save vertical space for the browser.
Is there any way to force the nav bar on the Nexus 7 to the vertically to the right like it is on the Galaxy Nexus? It's silly that I can view more of the same website on a 4.65" phone screen than I can on a higher-resolution 7" tablet.
if not out yet there will surely soon be a hide nav bar app or setting built for this device. Dont sweat the small stuff. Enjoy your NEW TOY. it will soon become obsolete as all new gadgets
Has anyone tried Boat Browser on it? I love Boat on my Prime and Boat Browser Mini on my Evo.
Hey guys, quick question - could someone tell me how the Nexus 7 is for reading magazines? Screenshots would be helpful but no worries if you can't. I'd like to be able to read mags without having to constantly double tap to zoom in and then pan around like I do on my PlayBook. I was hoping the extra pixels the N7 has over the Playbooks 1024x600 would allow me to do this. So how is it?
Cheers!
Hope this helps, popular science was free and preloaded. Used it as a example for your question.
Its a OK experience, but I'm coming from a larger tablet (iPad 2) and the smallish screen is still a feature I'm getting used too.
I included images attached but quality didn't look the same so here's outside hosted images

according to several reviews, there should also be a text only/reading mode which is much easier to read (like an ebook). see googles I/O address for N7.
Yes, that functionality does indeed work. I've attached some screenshots from Pop Sci.

Thanks for the screenshots. I was just thinking about how magazines would look on the N7. That text mode is a definite plus as well.:good:

Thanks guys that's awesome. Unfortunately I won't have access to Play Magazines because I'm in the UK but I use Zinio, and I just checked on the Play Store and it says that has a text only mode as well.
It's very very tempting, now if I can just find somewhere that stocks it...

I just noticed this feature on the stock Samsung browser that comes with the Note n7100. I hadn't seen this feature talked about before in any review. There's an icon in the web address field that enables "reader mode". It basically gets rid of everything around the text and fits it to the screen for perfect reading.

Does anybody know if it would be possible to set the Reader background color to sepia instead of white ? I find it more eye friendly.

The only option I found for changing the background is inverting screen rendering. This can be found in the accessibility menu inside the browser settings. What it does is changes white for black and viceversa.

Thanks mate. Guess i'll stick to white then.
Probably a stupid question, figured i'd ask. I would imagine some of the gestures are hardware based and not actually software based. I use to own a S3, which other then the gestures I do not miss much. Is there apps, or development software I could download to duplicate the s3/note 2 gestures? Text to ear would call that person, palm swipe would screenshot, swipe right/left on a contact name to call or text, ETC. Didn't know how much I would miss those gestures until I swapped phones. Any info would be appreciated.
If this isn't out already, I'd even start a donation thread if anyone would be interested in creating this. If this would be a popular idea, send some replies.
Thanks.

those are the only 3 things i miss about my s3 also.
i'm loving this device with the exception of the fulltime fear of breaking it, LOL
if these functions can be ported, i'd gladly donate also.
i have a feeling its embedded in the touchwiz framework though.
i imagine the palm to swipe screenshot feature might be able to be replicated in a separate app.
but i'm guessing the swipe contact name to call/text is touchwiz only.
You can't swipe to call or text in stock contacts app as the app is made out of scrollable tabs.
These features were once submitted to cyanogen mod, but rejected because it caused more troubles than actual solutions. They're (we're) really careful when it comes to bloatware.

Hey everyone.
Did you all know that the Note 10.1 default Browser has a fullscreen mode with quick controls that are gesture based? (I wish the controls were bigger, though)
If you go to Browser settings and then to Labs section, there is a Quick Controls option you can enable. Is this new in Jelly Bean based roms?
Basically your Browser goes fullscreen with no bars and you can swipe from the left or right edge to bring up a semi-circular set of touch controls to do whatever you want.
Or, maybe, you all knew this and I am a noob.

Still thanks for sharing. I'm sure there are enough people who are not aware of this feature and they might be helped by your post.
It had this is 4.0 but the controls wee bigger and ALOT easier to use

I didn't know about this until I was told a few weeks ago, it's very good for quick and full screen browsing, but like the OP said; it would be better if the buttons could be increased in size.
