[Q] Question about ATT Smart Wifi app - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I introduce myself as a brand new G2 owner coming from mega-rooting my S2 E4GT.
In playing with the phone, I came across the ATT Smart wifi app, which perhaps sounds fancier than it really is.
Since we are on a limited data plan, we all know to connect to our wifi network as soon as we get home. The limited description of this app, makes it sound like it will connect me to my home network as soon as it detects it. Fine. But does that mean that it will keep scanning for wifi all day until it finds my network? Or do I have a way to limit that somehow?
Thanks for the help

How can I use a smart phone on AT&T just on wifi

So I just picked up a couple of WM phones HTC743 and an AT&T Tilt 2.
I've been using one of the early windows smartphones for a number of years just for the the contact manager because it uses activesynch nicely with Outlook. Too damn small for any network access though.
I'm not terribly interested in a big data plan for a lot of internet access. I might pickup my email and surf a bit while I'm traveling though. I had wanted to use the wifi for that.
Th HTC s743 gave AT&T a bit of a startle because the didn't know what it was.
It's functioning but even though I have Data Conn. turned off it still manages to automatically turn on once in a while. I see daily very low volume charges even though everything says I'm accessing via WIFI.
I just plugged the simm into the Tilt 2 and though I haven't called AT&T as yet about this phone it did allow calls in and out but I can't seem to get the internet connection working even though wifi shows as being connected. It takes a long time for it to connect compared with the S743.
So ... is there a way to use either of these phones via wifi only?
Just turning off the Data Conn. on the s743 doesn't seem to completely work. The pre loaded GPS app appears to automatically turn Data Conn. back on. I know it does this if wifi & Data Conn. are both turned off.
A neat little AT&T billing trick?
From what I have read on here I think I maybe screwed on the TILT 2.
It also appears that until I register the Tilt 2 with AT&T my WIFI internet surfing just isn't going to work or do I have something else wrong?
I just have Data off, and no Data plan, but I'm using a android phone. I'm using the HTC Aria.
I was able to fix the S743 by just deleting the "APN"? in the configuration menu. I can always reload it quickly from AT&T if need be. But that phone also let's me pick between AT&T or Tmobile so I think it's more flexible to begin with. It's WM6.1 whereas the AT&T Tilt 2 is WM6.5 and there's no such configuration page where you can download the network configuration from AT&T. I've looked but maybe I missed something?
I also can't get this phone to work on WIFI either yet.
If you can, just change a character in the apn. This will stop it connecting, and it will let you easily switch it back on by changing it back if need be

[Q] WiFi Hotspot on HTC Panache stays on?

Hi Everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone has had the issue where their Panache Hotspot doesn't turn off? I will outline the problem below...
On Day x, I turn on my Hotspot and gave access to my sister, who has an iPod Touch -> she finishes what she needs to do, and I turn it back off
Day y, I do not turn on the Hotspot (meaning that the Hotspot box is NOT checked - I can't post an example, as I don't know how to do it off my phone and xda won't allow me to post outside links - sorry!) but I find out she still has access. I consult with a couple other people about why this might be, and it turns out that they can all find my Hotspot (HTC Portable Hotspot) on their phones too. Also, even after I went into my Hotspot and blocked her IP, she still was able to have access. The only thing I could do was turn off my phone, or change my password and turn on my Hotspot and then turn it off again.
Anyone have any ideas why this might be? I'm on mobilicity, so I have unlimited data, but this still bothers me, and I'm only into day 4 of my 14 day 'trial' period, so if this is a huge bug, I'll probably take it back and swap for a Nexus S.
Please let me know if I'm missing any information. I really appreciate any help anyone can give!!
Thanks!
Manda
Hi,
a few month ago, my mobile network automatic turn off if WiFi hotspot on my HTC sensation was turn on. I already check setting until 2 week but the problem still not solve. I am happy right now after my software flashing with ROM Android Revolution HD, change kernel, radio. etc.
Not only my WiFi hotspot was working properly but my htc was faster and very faster.
Sorry if my answer not make you happy

[Q] 3G data issue on Samsung Focus + Samsung Focus S, anyone have this problem?

Hey, I'm experiencing 3G data issues. I have an unlocked Samsung Focus (Rogers) and recently bought a Samsung Focus S (AT&T) hoping it would be a better experience. Both my phone shows it has full bars and 3G or 4G availability but I find 60% of the time my phone has little to no data going to my phone, so none of my apps or news feeds get updated or they get updated slowly. When I'm on wifi the phone works flawlessly. I'm currently on a Fido network and none of my iPhone and Android unlocked phones had this problem.
I read this article,
http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/h...g-wp7-handsets
One of the odder quirks of Windows Phone 7 to appear since the platform's launch has been the absence of Automatic Data Configuration for users who swap SIM chips and network-hop with their unlocked handsets.
ADC should let the phone communicate with the network it's connected to in order to retrieve all the settings it needs in order to use the network's services. Samsung defended disabling ADC by saying that its phones are intended to only be used with a specific carrier
Now I know this is talking about MMS, but does anyone think it's related to 3G connectivity from a different service provider?

I'm not very familiar with the ADC stuff, but can't you install Samsung Tools and check "Set 'Run ADC' Flag" to run ADC on next boot? Any time I loose my connection after flashing or modifying, I use that, and I get my 3G back. Maybe it will help your situation?
I read over your problem and think enabling the auto sim setting through your diagnostics menu might help you out. It did help me. here is the link

kinda the same problem
i have an att focus v.1.3 on 7.8 via general cab files unlcoked and using tmo usa. my story... i just moved from Louisiana (where i happily used only edge knowing that was all that was possible with my setup) to Wisconsin. well on the car ride to the airport i looked down at my phone around the houston area and to my surprise, it had a big fat 4g on there, which is shocking for 2 reasons, i didnt know the focus even supported 4g, and a tmo sim in an att phone getting something that wasnt edge, so i played for a bit and it worked flawlessly. (fastforward through the planes making me turn on airplane mode etc etc) now im in my new home, where the same phone almost always has 3g.... the problem being, data doesnt work at all when its on 3g, only edge or 4g. i dont understand why or how different data signals are working, but i need to fix this. the focus doesnt have a 3g toggle, just general data which kills everything, and ive tried who knows how many things ive tried to make the 3g work(when its showing i have it.). i tried whats posted in this thread, i factory reset, plugged into zune, i have both network profile and my normal data (in settings) set to auto(ive tried every combination). and even a few things via diagnostics. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello guys
I recently installed Windows Phone 7.8 Custom ROM. Experiencing frequent disconnection of the 3G data connection. I am sure that the problem is not from the network side as my friend using the same network on a iPhone has no issues.
Any suggestions?

[Q] T Mobile 3g Random Data Drop

Hi,
So i own a nexus 7 3g and use the t-mobile data service and i am hoping you guys can help me with these random data drops i get.
I will bring my tablet to work, put it in my book bag and drive to work, and when i get to work, the data signal is gone and its disconnected from t-mobile.
The only way i know how to get data back is restarting the tablet.
I was hoping there might be another way to get data back without rebooting, or find a way for this to stop happening altogether so i dont lose data randomly like this while i travel or leave the device unattended for a few hours.
I have never owned any GSM devices besides the nexus 7 so i am not to familiar with troubleshooting or any little tinkering i need to do with a GSM device/sim card etc.
So any ideas/help will be awesome and gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

There maybe problem because of apps like juicedefender which disables network in ideal/sleep mode ,So unistalling such apps may help you , BTW Are you sure network is not an issue ? Because even i have 3G Nexus 7 , i am also facing connection issue, My networks disables automaticaly anytime, when i use Wifi it disables my Sim network connection, It means i cant use internet without wifi though its 3G model I have reported the same to my nearest Asus service centre they looking on it , They told me there will be setting for data dropping , If i able to find its solution then will PM you.

Hi
Thanks for the helpful tips. I'm pretty sure i don't have any battery saving apps, i deleted the few i did have.
I don't have any network issues. It seems it only turns off when in traveling around with it. Its really weird, and i am confused as to why it just goes away only when im traveling with it.
It does get disconnected from the internet when on wifi at home and stuff, but i still have bars in the signal icons moving and showing me that i am connected to t-mobile service.
But when i am dealing with this issues and have no data, the icon is empty and it tells me i have no service.
Maybe just toggling airplane mode might work, ill try that next time.
i tried toggleing airplane mode, no luck.
It may be the connection, but is frustrating i have to reboot every time just to get data back. Even if i toggle data in mobile data it wont work.

Tethering on rooted and unrooted Android phones.

Hi.
Firstly I want to put aside all warning about if it is legal or so, focus on technical issue.
I am not new if it comes to networking, that's why I want to expand my knowledge.
Just got new Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, and wanted to try tethering with my sim card.
Got message on web browser in PC and mobile as well:
"Are you using your phone as a modem or personal hotspot?
Reference SIM002
Using your phone as a modem and connecting it to other devices through WiFi or USB to get onto the internet (also called 'tethering'), is not what the plan you're on was designed for. If you would like to speak to someone about tethering options available to you, please call 333 free from your Three phone.
In the meantime if you want to get your phone back to browsing the internet you'll need to turn it off, allow it to reset itself for a few moments, and then turn it on again.
If you're looking for a Mobile Broadband connection, you'll get a better, cheaper and faster experience on one of our Mobile Broadband tariffs or devices. Just go to your nearest 3Store."
I found some threads here on our forum, but no answer how does it work.
As in my phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 Relay) which is rooted it working fine.
Some people say network operator is doing Deep Packet Inspection - maybe, but it looks like rooted device appear for them as not hotspot and not rooted as hotpost.
Am I right? Is rooted phone doing it somehow smarted (e.g. making itself proper router with his DNS point and gate ?)
