So this so-called "Smart" Wi-Fi is getting to be a pain.
It pops up when I am in car mode, and other times when I have specifically have TURNED OFF Wi-Fi.
Why on earth would a Wi-Fi-related app even run when I have done that?
Any way to get rid of it or is that the only way it manages Wi-Fi?

Just turn it off, settings, then more, then applications manager, then find it and turn it off.

Hmmm... I think I just found a way to really screw up your phone... let's see what you think of my theory:
1. Put your phone into Airplane mode. This will completly turn off all the radios in the phone.
2. Go into settings and set an unlock pattern.
3. Put your phone into standby mode and turn it back on.
4. If you use up all of your tries at the unlocḱ screen you will have to enter your login details to unlock it. BUT THE PHONE IS STILL IN AIRPLANE MODE. Hence, the phone will not be able to connect to Googles servers for verification. And the worst thing is that not even a shut down of the phone will remove the airplane mode. Not even a removal of the battery.
THe only way to get out of this is to do a hardware reset of the phone.
What do you this of this?
I am not gonna test my theory since I don't want to risk having to do a hardware reset.
I think before the phone tries to connect to the Google service it will prompt you with a 'turn off airplane mode/turn on mobile data/WiFi' option, like it does when you open an app that requires WiFi or GPS when those radios are switched off.
Try it

Nah... I am not going to get close and personal with my theory on this one... Just let's hope you're right... someone else might need to do a hardware reset?

Hi,
when I am downloading a large file, my screen turns off after some time when I do nothing. So far so good. But when I resume to my Android I must see that the Wifi-connection was turned off, too - I think because of battery power saving.
But it was turned off during my file download, so I have to download it again and I have to keep my screen not to turn off by tapping on it periodically. That's what is annyoing me.
I recognized that the connection is not deactivated directly after the screen was turned off. It lasts some time (minutes?) then the wifi connection is turned off, too.
Is there a way to prevent the deacitivation of the wifi connection when the screen is turned off?
Thanks for your answers.
Yes,
Goto settings>wireless connections>wifi adjustments
There you should find an option for WiFi selection politics. Just choose not to never disconnect.
Cheers
Hmm, it is already set to "Never disconnect".
I think this setting is only useful when you want to switch automatically between mobile data (GPRS/UTMS) and WiFi.

No. That happens whether you want it or not if you have a wifi access.
Or I have a couple of busted phones at home that totally ignore this setting.
Tell your screen to never shut off, then change back.
I like what the smart wifi does and dont want to turn it off. however it always seems like right when im in the middle of something the stupid notification will pop up asking me if i want to connect to one of the available wifi hotspots. is there a way to get rid of the popup? all i want is for it to enable/disable wifi when i am getting close to my known wifi locations.

That doesn't do it, either. I have that disabled and have for a while. But I still get those popup's every now and then.
is it possible to reset the database used for the "Smart mode" Wi-Fi option? When I first got my device I remember after a day or so the Wi-Fi would automatically turn on if I was in the vicinity of my home and my parent's home. Now it won't turn on in either locations, however it will turn on in certain locations "randomly" that do have Wi-Fi... for example today at work it would turn on several times after turning it off and entering certain floors that carried Wi-Fi. There has to be a database of some sort or a way to reset it so the only two locations that matter to me, home and parent's home, get preference to "Smart mode". any suggestions?
Theoretical, haven't tried it, but try this -
Settings / More / Application Manager / All / Sprint Connections Optimizer -
Force stop
Clear cache and data
reboot
thanks for responding, unfortunately I do not see "Sprint Connections Optimizer" even under the All tab in Application Manager. I'm on 4.3 if that makes any difference...
That's Really Odd....

I don't have the Sprint Optimizer as well. I found this thread because the "do you want to use smart mode" (paraphrasing) pops up all the time for me despite the fact that I always have it enabled. It's quite annoying when it pops up in the middle of the night and lights up the entire bedroom. Anyone else suffering from this deluded feature?

Hmmm.... I have a 720T on 4.3. Could be the culprit/difference. Can't investigate what I don' t have.
And I'm holding off on updating...

anyone know how this smart mode thing works? should I leave wi-fi on all the time and let it do its thing or what? seems like with this option on, wi-fi keeps turning on even when I turn it off.
By any chance, is this setting in WiFi / Advanced what you're looking for?

thanks for this link! never noticed that specific option in the advanced part of the wi-fi settings. wonder how true it is when the article states that leaving this option on saves battery versus firing up the GPS chip. I understand GPS would suck more, but would it do it silently at the app's request even though the app isn't running in the foreground? Anyway, this setting might be intertwined to the Smart mode Wi-Fi option, however Smart mode Wi-Fi is a separate option along with this one you pointed out... which kind of raises more questions!
Everytime I use my phone there is annoying chromecast pop-up comes from nowhere and it makes my phone unusable. I don't have chromecast it's probably connecting to someone else's. I went in settings I turned off notifications and its still happening.

Have you tried turning off Nearby device scanning in Settings/Connections/More connection settings? Not sure if that would help but just wondering..

It's happening after turned of the device scanning.
Hmm, I googled around and it looks like you're not alone. Unfortunately the fix might need to come from Google..
Settings-google-google cast- turn off notifications controls
