How to easily screw up your phone - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hmmm... I think I just found a way to really screw up your phone... let's see what you think of my theory:
1. Put your phone into Airplane mode. This will completly turn off all the radios in the phone.
2. Go into settings and set an unlock pattern.
3. Put your phone into standby mode and turn it back on.
4. If you use up all of your tries at the unlocḱ screen you will have to enter your login details to unlock it. BUT THE PHONE IS STILL IN AIRPLANE MODE. Hence, the phone will not be able to connect to Googles servers for verification. And the worst thing is that not even a shut down of the phone will remove the airplane mode. Not even a removal of the battery.
THe only way to get out of this is to do a hardware reset of the phone.
What do you this of this?
I am not gonna test my theory since I don't want to risk having to do a hardware reset.

I think before the phone tries to connect to the Google service it will prompt you with a 'turn off airplane mode/turn on mobile data/WiFi' option, like it does when you open an app that requires WiFi or GPS when those radios are switched off.
Try it

Nah... I am not going to get close and personal with my theory on this one... Just let's hope you're right... someone else might need to do a hardware reset?

I guess this is the only solution, I did a hardreset.
but this is a very very dangerous bug in the operating system.

at any time you can click and hold the reject call/power off button and it will bring you a list of options one of them is turning off airplane mode
Go on your computer and reset your Gmail password. then try again. It should do the trick.

N1 data connection issue... please help!

Hi everyone, I had a quick question I needed your assistance on.
Sometime I put my N1 into Airplane mode to save battery and when I finally turn airplane mode off I can never seem to get a data connection unless I totally shut off the phone and turn it back on again. Coming out of Airplane mode there will be a 3g signal on the status bar but only the up arrow will light up and anything needing data (browser, market, etc) wont work unless I totally shut off the phone and turn it back on again. Is this happening to you too?
The same thing happens if I open up the Quick Settings app and turn off mobile data (to save battery) and when I turn mobile data back on I have to restart the phone entirely for it to work properly.
It seems like my phone might be having an issue with data connection so I might have to call up HTC about it but I wanted to find out from the other members on the forum if this was happening to them too.
Thank you for your help
It's happened to me before using APNdroid.
Apparently you can fix it by turning the radio on and off in the testing menu (*#*#4636#*#), never tried it though.
Check that:

Lose service, it never comes back

Lately, I've been having an issue where if I go into an area with no service (or at least I think I have no service) I never get service again, even when I'm in areas where I know I have strong service. Sometimes if I go into airplane mode and back, it comes back, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes when this happens, and I turn on airplane mode and turn it off again, the phone shuts itself off and I have to manually power it back on.
Anyone have this issue, or know what could be going on?

I have this same issue myself. Dunno what it is and wasn't able to fix it either. You can look through my comments to find an identicle thread I started a couple of days ago on this same issue titled "Data connection issue" to see if it helps.
I'll have airplane mode on for awhile but when I finally turn it off I get 3g data showing in the status bar but only one of the arrow's will light up if I try to use the browser and eventually sputters out. Same thing would happen with the Quicksettings app when I would turn off the apn data toggle for awhile, when I turn it back on there is no real data connection even though the 3g is showing...
I've tried the whole thing about pressing the #4#... etc to turn off the radio and turn it back on again but nothing works for me. I wish someone knew how to fix this
mine does the same thing. the only thing that works for me is turning it off and back on again. such a PITA.
mine does it also
I fixed my similar 3g problem by (re)flashing the radio from recovery.

same problem i just restart
same problem sometimes...i just switch airplane mode on and off and it usually fixes
Old bug: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2845
I'm hoping that Froyo finally brings a fix for this (and full Exchange calendar), or it's Craigslistville for my N1.

This or a restart will always fix the problem when this happens to me.

I'm crossing my fingers that this'll be remedied in the update..

[Q] Unlock Screen Fail Attempt

I've been trying to access my N7 but so far no success yet. It's rooted already btw.
I've turned off my wi-fi and short later my N7 will lockscreen itself which is normal.
But my child try to turn on the tab and made 5 bad tries on the lockscreen pattern. So the device turns on lock mode due to failure attempt.
The device ask me to connect to google play account to unlock but the wi-fi is off and I'm unable to turn it on.
Is there anywhere to unlock this?
I wouldn't want to perform hard reset if it's possible.
Thats cute... From what I read, if you can't access the device via your google play account and you have reached the too many tries page of death, you are pretty much screwed.
Hard reset will fix it..
Hopefully, you do a Nandroid backup occasionally and/or use TB and are smart enough to move the files to a offsite workstation on some sort of schedule. This would be the same restore method you would need if you lost or had your device stolen.
A really good case for having root and doing a regular full backup process with offloading of the backup data.
Well, the issue is kinda weird. Due to the wifi sleep OFF policy once the screen goes lock.
That's why I couldn't access my Google account due to OFFLINE connectivity.
I hope Google actually finds a way to solve this.

But according to your OP, you turned the WiFi off, it didn't go off because sleeping.

If it was off for sleeping, turning the power on the device would restore the WiFi connection assuming you are where an access point is that you had already authorized nearby.

I think they need to come up with another way of dealing with this, since unlike a phone which has TXT abilities, the tablet can only talk with a WiFi connection.

Yeah, seems like if the WIFI connectivity is cut off....all hopes of accessing the tablet may be doomed if Google account needed to access it.
What if you just reboot the tablet? If you were connected to a WiFi before, and had it set to auto-connect, a reboot should allow you to reconnect.

How to disable "power off" if the phone is locked?

My Gnex was stolen a few months before I got my N4, and although I tried to track it the thief was "clever" and simply turned the phone off. I think he then took the SIM out before turning it back on, so that even when powered up it never connected to the network and he had time to wipe/sell/use my device. The biggest lesson I learned was to lock my phone, and so my N4 has a PIN code. However, I was thinking that a thief could still do the same thing if this one is ever misplaced and I would be screwed. Is there a way to prevent someone from shutting down the phone without unlocking the device? At least this way you would be able to track it or install tracking software until the battery dies.

I have Avast! installed on mine and when I changed out the Sim at the store the other day, the phone freaked out and sent me text messages (to my backup phone number) of the location and the new phone number. I'm about 90 percent sure that some of the other settings in the app lock the ability to wipe the phone... but I'm new to this Android thing and I could be wrong (workaround via fastboot?).
Anyway, if this is the case, Avast should calm your fears... plus its free.
What if the other person simply turns the phone off?
theres nothing you can do after they turn it off they will just restore the device, even if your carrier blocks your imei number, they can just use the phone in another country ,you can only protect your information on the device
If you have a rooted device you can install Cerberus as a system app, so it will survive to wipe. But disable power off is impossible.
I realize it is impossible to disable power off (for good reason!), however there should be a way to disable it when the phone is locked. In fact, I cant think of a single reason the phone SHOULD allow you to power it down while it is locked.

A single reason?
You turn your phone screen on. It randomly locks up and not responding.
Oh no what do I do now?! I can't pull my battery!!!!!!
Long press hold for 10 seconds. Phone turns off.
Long press is encoded within the phone and can't be disabled, it's down to the bootloaderish level.
