my friend (soft?)bricked his nexus 4...help? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So he was following some random youtube video that was years old so it probably was outdated...
the phone state is currently unlocked, not unrooted yet..but with clockwork mod .
it responds to fastboot commands using the nexus toolkit by wugfresh but i can't get adb to work? all the guides i see say you have to have the phone booted normally before installing it and we can't do that
any help is appreciated

Your situation is a bit unclear, Is the phone boot looping? What you can do is flash a factory image while the phone is on the bootloader mode using Ncry toolkit or something similar. This way doesn't require the phone to be on or have any flash files already on the phone.

hey thanks for relying so fast, yes it is boot looping, ill try what you said now and update status, thanks again
edit: where would i get the factory image? does that toolkit download it for you?

you didn't go into the stock recovery after unlocking bootloader
here is the factory images page - https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
you could probably just flash the recovery.img in the image-*.zip file to recovery, then go into recovery, wait for it to do it's thing then flash clockworkmod, philz or TWRP with the toolkit and do root etc.
you can also just flash the factory image, then do the stuff with the toolkit (easier)
sorry if I've confused you o.o

Easiest way to do this is to use Ncry (http://goo.gl/l0iuEn):
1. Put phone in bootloader an connect phone to pc with Ncry ON.
2. Click on the one click menu.
3. click SR mode.
The programme will automatically download the files and do the flashing, when finished the phone will auto boot.

Bootloop on brand new 4.2.2

I've encountered an unpleasantly unique problem (as far as the internet is concerned) with my Nexus 7.
It started when I wanted to upgrade my Nexus from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. For whatever reason, the upgrade wouldn't install, gave me an error a quarter of the way through and booted me back into 4.2.1 with no repercussions.
Using WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit, I managed to get 4.2.2 onto there by flashing it over everything. It seemed fine, but went into a bootloop on the Google splash screen before it could start up and go through the first time setup.
I have tried everything. I tried flashing again with NRT, and got the image attatched, a hither-to unseen error that could not be fixed with a pc reboot or reinstall of NRT. I tried using the old Nexus Toolkit to boot into CWM recovery, but since USB debugging isn't (and can't be) turned on, that could do nothing. I've tried using the SDK command line to unlock it and flash it, but the device can't be found because it hasn't been booted up for that first time startup configuration. I've tried uninstalling all the drivers and trying all of that again, with nothing.
What's left is a nexus 7 with a brand new 4.2.2 that can't boot, no USB debugging, that is locked and unrooted. I can get into the bootloader, but there's no recovery installed.
I'm sorry if this has happened before. I'm sorry if this isn't new. But good christ almighty I just want my tablet to work.
tl:dr help me gods of the Android
If you can boot into the bootloader, can you use the SDK's fastboot tool to flash the stock recovery?

As long as you can get into fastboot, you should be able to use fastboot commands, sounds like you have a driver problem. Did you uninstall all the drivers and install the pdanet drivers? If the pdanet drivers don't work try naked drivers. It doesn't matter if debugging is enabled or not or if your device is unlocked and unrooted, you should still be able to do everything via fastboot commands. I recommend wiping everything via fastboot commands and than flashing the stock image. I recommend avoiding rootkits they are more trouble than they're worth, fast boot is a lot easier, faster and safer. You might want to try a different computer if nothing else works. You might have a defective bootloader though. Make sure you check the device manager on your computer to see if there are any errors with the drivers, it should show a yellow triangle if the driver is not working, if that's the case click on update driver and navigate to the SDK drivers.

I was surprised when it did. I had done a full driver reinstall to prestige777's advice, and fastboot started working again. Ran into an error when trying to flash 4.2.2 and bootloader version 4.18 with mismatched signatures, but tried it on another computer (thank you prestige777 again) and it's booting!
Thank you both so much!

You have unlocked your bootloader with your Computer right?? so the drivers is working fine..
If you can get into bootloader you just need to extract the ROM, and run flash-all.xx
are you trying to run fastboot while in your phones recovery or bootloader?
You don't flash stock google firmware using recovery, you flash it using fastboot while the device is on bootloader mode.

UPDATE: booting failed already gone by flashing cyanogen rom
the problem now is stuck in booting.see the attach picture
what is the meaning of
archive does not contain boot.sig
archive does not contain recovery.sig
archive does not contain system.sig
Got the same problem...I used RTK to flash 4.4 and ended up with a soft bricked N7.
Well initially I haven't been able to update any newer versions of CM. I was stuck on 10.2 nightly. I got a notification that there's an update so I downloaded it and tried installing. I get stuck when my N7 will go into recovery, I'll always get the droid with the red exclamation point and I have to stop the update. But I will always be able to do a system reboot and use the N7. After flashing using the RTK, all I can do is boot into the Bootloader mode. Choice at that point it Recovery, Reboot Recovert, Reboot Bootloader and Power Off. If I choose Recovery nothing happens. So the real choice is only to power off or reboot the bootloader.
I tried using fast boot but the guide I got was asking me to put the tablet in debugging mode (which I can't really do). And I get an error when doing the steps in CMD. I think I wasn't able to properly load the drivers because I am not seeing my device listed with serial number when I run >dab devices.
Kindda stuck and waiting where this thread will lead to as well so I can fix my N7.
Also, when I get the factory image (JWR66V) and run 7-zip on it, I don't see these files: bootloader-grouper-4.23.img, image-nakasi-jwr66y.zip, flash-all.sh, flash-base.sh. I only see 1 file.
As mentioned in about 5 billion threads, USB debugging has nothing to do outside of a booted OS.
Fix your drivers.
Unzip the factory image archive.

^Fixed my drivers (via SDK). PC recognised the device via fast boot devices. Ran a set of commands fast boot erase boot, cache, recovery, system, and user data. Flashed boot loader and reboot boot loader. Flashed 4.3 factory image (extracted via 7zip). Flashing/Update FAILED (I think the error was 'too mani links') and it went back to a blinking cursor.
@niceguy01 - just wait for CMD to process the entire thing. I was worried as well when I saw the system does not contain boot.sig etc error. Waited for it and started getting some scripts after. Wasn't able to complete the flash though but little steps getting there.
where should i flash radio.img?

[Q] Tried Rooting Nexus 4 following the guide, but now it's not working

I followed the guide from this forum on how to root a Nexus 4, but in the process I think I've broken my phone.
I first tried flashing AOKP and it's GApps, the phone booted fine, and I was able to get to the wifi set up screen, however, I couldn't get wifi to turn on.
So I tried to flash Paranoid Android and it's GApps. But now the phone won't get past the boot screen that comes after the google logo.
I've asked around and Googled around for a solution, but I can't find anything. I've been trying to get this fixed since yesterday.
Can anyone please help me? I just want to be able to use my phone again.

Just put your phone in fastboot mode and flash factory image.
Okay now I have a new problem. I turned the phone off, booted back on and tried entering recovery mode, but now I have an image of an android with a red ! mark.
I was just about to try flashing an older version of the stock.
That's normal for stock recovery, you won't be able to sort your phone from there, stay in fastboot mode. You can use a toolkit to flash back to stock from there if you need it more noob friendly. Otherwise you can use the flash-all.bat script in the factory images.

Okay. I'm trying to reinstall Paranoid Android now. I did the sideboot via ADB.
I couldn't seem to get the stock version of android on it though. I made sure to open the tar file and tried to move the .zip "image-occam-jdq39.zip" onto the phone, but it wouldn't accept it. So I'm trying Paranoid android again.
Edit: I got it booted. But now wifi won't work. Neither the speakers.
It didn't work because that's not how you flash a factory image. You need to be in fastboot mode and flash it from a PC using fastboot program. You used fastboot when you unlocked your bootloaders in the first place. You have stock recovery so you can't flash a custom rom, which is why your adb sideload of PA didn't work.
Like I said before you can use the flash-all.bat in the factory image. It runs the following commands which you can also use manually.
fastboot flash bootloader [path-to-bootloader.img]
fastboot flash radio [path-to-radio.img]
fastboot -w update [path-to-system-image.zip]
If that's too difficult use a nexus 4 toolkit to download and flash a factory image automatically. With your phone in fastboot mode, not recovery.
The above will fix your phone, trying to flash custom roms and system image zip in recovery mode will not.

Are you able to boot your 6P into recovery (TWRP) ?
Seems like he can ("try and start from twrp").
Solutions:
1. Fastboot flash factory image if you want to go back to complete stock.
or
2. Boot to TWRP. Connect the phone to your computer. Transfer any ROM zip you want to flash to the phone, TWRP supports MTP so you shouldn't have any problems copying the file. Factory reset (wipe data, cache, ART and system) from TWRP. Flash the ROM and gapps. Et voilĂ , your phone is back to normal!

If you're able to boot into TWRP recovery. Connect your 6P to the PC and enable MTP inside TWRP > Mount. You can then transfer the ROM and GApps, and flash them.
By "deleting the OS", I hope you didn't mean that you erased the partitions using fastboot erase command?

Then simply connecting in MTP mode (TWRP), transferring the ROM and GApps, and flashing them, would do the job.
Easiest is if you made a backupin twrp. Just restore "boot" "system" and "data". Dont mess with "system image" in twrp restore.

If you're not getting a fastboot connection while connected in bootloader mode then your drivers are most likely the problem. It might be an idea to remove the toolkit and install adb and fastboot via the Android SDK, you'll find instructions in my guide:
