[Q] Is sim unlock by gfree permanent? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I sim unlock using gfree on MT4G with Froyo, will upgrading to Gingerbread relock the sim? What is the proper method to upgrade to T-Mobile stock Gingerbread while keeping sim unlock?
Thanks

recently i've tried the gfree method to sim-unlock my myTouch.
now i'm on Albino's 4.3 and any sim card works for me
conclusion: when you sim-unlock your device, that unlock is permanent.

Unlock Code doesn't work

EDIT: Apologies! This should have gone under General topic!
I bought an unlock code for my phone. I told them it's a Hero I got from Telus and I gave them my IMEI number. They sent me a code. I slipped in a Rogers SIM card and booted the phone. It says the network is locked. I put in my unlock code but it keeps saying "Incorrect password".
Do you think the fact that I'm running a custom ROM (Villain 5.3) could be the problem?
Or, come to think of it, could it be because I flashed an updated radio?
Hero has only 1.5 android stock, so you need a ROM that is 1.5 also. I came to this problem to...
Nandroid backup
Wipe
Flash 1.5 rom
Do unlock sh!t
Restore previous ROM
Voilà!
n00b001, I don't know who you are, but I could kiss you right now!
I restored MCR 3.1, unlocked my phone using the code I bought, restored VillainROM 5.3 and, like you say, voilà!
Thank you so much! Merci beaucoup!
Have yourself a great weekend!
Just wondering, will I ever have to use that code again (if I update the radio for example) or is my phone unlocked forever?
Interesting, I didn't know this. Well, I highly doubt you'll have to use that code again. my phone is unlocked and I've updated radio and everything
Nah, the unlock code is permanent. You can reflash a complete original factory ROM including SPL etc. and the phone will still be unlocked.
Good tip about needing 1.5 to unlock though.

Is there no way to unlock a hero after installing a custom rom without downgrading?

Yeah, so I was asking if the downgrade is essential for unlocking.
I'm hoping there's another method, as the problem is that I've sold and posted the phone already.
I wrongly assumed rooting via gold card performed an unlock , as I did test it with Virgin and Orange sim cards, and could connect to the networks and make calls fine, but buyer's having problems with an O2 sim.

Yes if you unlock with code and upgrade, device will still be unlocked. And if it does relock somehow, just re-enter the code

If a phone is unlocked by the code, it remains unlocked for life... no matter what ever you try to do.... rooting.... modding.... any thing.
So dont worry and just push ahead with modding.

depends on firmware you have and you have diff options
v1.6 & 2.1 can use Rebel sim II with v1.2 for Full Usage but cant yet upgrade to 2.2 unless use dj steve no base band update for 2.2
v2.1 & 2.2 users can user special software from home to read out the unlock code and can upgrade to new Android OS in future
Rebel simcard

SIM unlocking is done with the step that involves 'gfree'.
gfree is a utility that unlocks your SIM and CID set to 111111. In other words, unlocked. If you ran this program then you are sim unlocked if it said SUCCESS or COMPLETE or whatever it says. If that step said fail, make sure you do it right and try again, but thats the one that unlocks it.

[Q] Is SIM Unlock persistent after free?

I recently got an HTC Amaze and I plan on selling my old HTC Panache (Glacier) to either a friend or a developer here at XDA, and I plan on unlocking it with a purchased unlock code. However, I would like to inquire if the SIM unlock through unlock code will be persistent after a gfree root and after reverting gfree as well.
On a technical standpoint, if I SIM unlock it via unlock code and root via gfree, then the backup generated by gfree should keep the phone unlocked as well, right?

As it seems from several users' reports, unrooting by gfree keeps SIM unlock anyway. In other words: once SIM-unlocked by gfree, the unlock will remain forever.
