Is there a custom rom out there somewhere for the Motorola Flipside? I have the phone and I hate motorola blur, Is there something like AOSP. Something simple and fast?
I don't think anyone has cooked up a custom ROM for the Flipside. The phone's not really supported and known by most people. Everything is for higher end Android phones.
I have ADW EX on my Captivate over a ROM, and put it on my girlfriends Flipside. It's definitely a step up because of the animations, themes and options with the launcher. Honestly... Motoblur is hideous.
The Flipside runs pretty well if your root it and remove the AT&T stuff. I use LauncherPro as my home app.
Edit: don't add your social networks as Blur accounts. Use the Android FB widget and other apps to access that info.
+1 for ADW Launcher, between that and removing most of the motoblur / AT&T stuff with Titanium Backup the interface gets much better. I'm sad that I'm still stuck with the motoblur contacts/dialer, but at least I was able to use the modded messaging app from Cyanogen 5.

Try Dialer One. Very nice free dialer.
Thanks for the suggestion, that's almost exactly what I was looking for.
how are the devices working out with just all the att stuff removed
Being edited for accuracy...
I wanted to install a custom rom for my sisters flipside, cause she was impressed with the way my G1 looked.
It's not a terrible phone, so long as I can remove all the AT&T crap.
Ok everyone. beings that there is not a custom rom for the flipside yet. what say you about looking at some roms from the backflip and seeing if therre is a way to port them through to the flipside?
As the flipside i have in my hands is kinda a loner from my niece as i am trying to hook it up fpor her the best i can. there really is not alot of options out there for this.
As i run an xperia x10 this is just something to play with for me a few days a week if that.
but am willing to work on some roms if someone can point me in the right direction of what i might need to modify.

If you're really determined, you can visit Cyanogen's forum, and I'm sure people there will direct you.
The only really big downside to the Flipside is its screen resolution. Otherwise, it's a pretty up to date photo.
help please =D
Sooo i have a motorla flipside, its i decent phone i think. But as you all said i dont like the ATT interface and whatnot.. so how do i go about removing the ATT crap and replacing it with a new launcher or whatever? And what launcher should i use? I also want to be sure that i cant somehow ruin my phone lol
if you can help thank you!
ADWEX for the user interface
Titanium backup to freeze all ATT bloatware and make it disappear from the menu.
There are a few ppl working on custom Flipside ROMs...one PM'd me in a modmymobile forum and said he'd have at least a recovery done by yesterday...i'm guessing something set him back but something will be coming soon!
So I asked the guy doing work on the Flipside recovery and this is what he said:
The flipout recovery apk looks like it may work as is from the flipout forum, but may only backup/restore/ system folder using an older cwm recovery, so you have an existing backup option i think..
I'm trying to dice it up w more specific files, updated recovery w the ability to mount/unmount all the partitions for full backups and wipes of personal data from the recovery.. maybe a day or 2?

has there been a follow-up on what's being done? I've been seeing different things for example:
"How to Root, Uninstall Bloatware, and de-activate moto-blur for Motorola Flipside"
It seems pretty legit but the guy says that some programs end up not working, I don't really know how to directlink the site but thats the title exactly without the quotation marks, and i keep seeing things about clockworkmod being made for the flipside but its a ROM manager that doesn't seem to find "my device".
Anyway, thats what i've seen so far, and I know it takes a while to get a response but I feel that the flipside is a pretty nice phone, it would be great if I could do more with it, as i'm sure most of us feel that way

If you're talking about [http]androidforums[com]/flipside-all-things-root/345440-how-root-uninstall-bloatware-de-activate-moto-blur-motorola-flipside.html
then that site seems to be providing good information. i DEFINITELY would flash a recovery rom (such as polovinomozka's, his code seems to be pretty solid, although i have yet to test it. i do not have a flipside yet) and then perform a nandroid backup BEFORE doing any removal, just in case of irreparable damage i also would not recommend even trying to remove anything blur related as it will definitely make your phone unstable seeing how the whole system is based on blur. You can remove the ATT apps, but blur has to stay until there is a custom rom made without the blur built into it.
Hope this proves to be of some use to someone.
Last I've heard from one of the guys working on stuff is this:
yeah, i'm gonna see bout compiling from source the recovery apk that dexter derived his flipout recovery from and modify the hijack binary to work w the flipside (its only a couple small partition setting changes). if it works out, the cwm recovery should work flawlessly w /system /data /cache and /sd partitions, we're just locked down on the boot and recovery. (the ones we're using are fake or bootstrapped recoveries, not actually replacing the stock one)
If they're working a release of froyo for the Flipside, I'd be more then happy to make a donation for the cause. Love the phone, but I'm dieing for 2.2.
So check this out...I messaged the guy at modmymobile and asked how things were going becuase I heard people were having problems getting an updated CMW and this is his response:
"been sittin on the updated cwm recovery binaries and been draggin my feet/takin a break the past week or 2. i'll throw something out soon, but cant commit to a timeframe, sorry."
Looks like things are on the up and up...stay patient everyone
Hello,
So I'm looking at getting the G2 for T-Mobile.
How is the Root and ROM scene coming along? It looks like there is a pretty simple and solid way to root, although it seems like only stock ROMs for now. Also I didn't see to seem a recovery thread for the TMO phone?
How soon does it look like we will start seeing the flagship ROMs? Like AOSPA, AOKP, PAC, etc. Also, with those ROMs, would it be possible to carry over some of the LG features like knock on?
Thank you in advance!
Just read a few threads and you'll get your answer.

Its like you didnt even try to read through the dev sections, there are already AOSPA, AOKP, CM and stock based ROMS all in the development section. You cannot miss them. Rooting method is clearly discussed in these threads too...
Knock on already works on these...read please.
This is an asinine OP thread...

I went through the threads, saw NONE of what your talking about. Went again, repeat story.
I see FOUR ROMs and ALL of them are stock rooted. Not a single other ROM.
So I go to android development, main thread there. Zero ROMs. EDIT: Found 2 modded stock in here. Both of them were in the TMO dev section already though.
Alright, original development, I see a few ROMs, none mention if they will work on tmobile.
On stuff like the CM ROM, assuming it works, no where does it say if knock on was ported/works at all, and NOTHING about the other features.
I still have no idea where you're seeing that AOSPA thread. Not in dev, original dev, or TMO dev.
Also, if you actually read what I said instead of being an assuming jerk. You'd see I said that I say the root method, and it looks pretty easy and solid. I didn't ask if it had root, or how to do it, just saying that I did find that thread, and it looked easy and like it applied to all variants of the phone.
So, why so mean? I read the forums, I found none of the answers. Then you get mad, telling me to read the forums, and again, nothing there. So apparently there is a magical forums with all these threads you are finding, and that's why I'm asking.

Excuse me you did say "ROM scene" so taking all the G2 ROMs collectively, I'm putting it out there that collectively we have all these Roms already. Check the Verizon thread as well. Those Roms I was talking about are there. You wanted an answer to your "ROM scene" you got the answer. Next time choose your words more carefully. Sorry if I misunderstood you on your question here.
He did ask about T-mobile though in his op.
I believe it's just stock roms at the moment.
Rooting is solid and easy.
Great way to get rid of bloatware.
I think we just have to give it time for "other" roms to come.

This plus a couple devs just got and or are about to get the T-Mobile G2...get the phone first. Stock is a beast anyway.
You're not going to need to do much tweaking at all because of how fast and fluid the phone comes out the box
By the time your treaty to stretch out your wings the Roms will be there waiting

Thanks. Yeah I assumed as much but was hoping for otherwise.
Yes I was talking about T-Mobile. I thought that made sense but I could see how the other guys read it as just a general question.
I already see some decent looking stock ROMs that should hold me over until a real AOSP or CM base ROM comes out. I assume we have no ETAs on that. The optimus g (on sprint) still has pretty much ONE person porting 95% of all the ROMs. He's great at it, and updates all the ROMs weekly, but still, if he fell of the face of the earth, that phone would probably almost never get an updated ROM besides the CM builds and the one official ROM, PACman.
I got the phone yesterday....and dear god. The screen, form factor, buttons on the back....all of it is amazing. At 67% battery life and it's been running since noon yesterday. My old optimus G is at 75%....and it's been running for only 3 hours. Such an insane battery, I love it.
I am waiting to hear back from Sprint, in a battle to cancel my contract and get some discount on the ETF. I actually have a decent poor service case so we'll see how that goes. Worst case I'll just cancel the TMO plan and keep the phone until I can cancel Sprint.
I'll probably wait on rooting and using a ROM for a bit. Although I can't STAND the high DPI (on any phone really, I always have most of my apps on my other phones at 240 DPI or so) or the notification bar. Is there any non root way to change that? If not I may root today just so I can at least change the DPI and look in to the notification bar. Quick settings aren't even that bad. It's that brightness and ringer slider that I can't seem to turn off. I can't imagine why they though all this, plus qslide on by default, would be a nice experience for the user.
Most of the rest of the ROM they got right though, with some pretty nice features.
Thanks for the help, all of you!
Greetings all-
My coworker got a shiny new Verizon LG G2 last Friday. He knows I am a phone geek so he handed it to me to check it out. I booted it up and fell in love within about 3 seconds. You know what it was?? The notification LED.
I have been using a HTC DNA (powered by ViperDNA) for the past 5 months and I REALLY miss having a functional LED. I use LightFlow and got so used to being able to determine notifications with the screen off thanks to the LED on my previous phone (GNex). So I played with the G2 a little, checked the specs online, and decided to get one myself. My company has plenty of phones that qualify for upgrades and there was a special that made it cost a whopping $0.
I immediately started researching available ROMs and recovery methods. I know this is one of the new hotness phones out so I knew there must be some sweet dev going on.
So I get the phone, root and install TWRP, and install my chosen ROM (a very popular one here). I am not gonna name it because I know all devs here do excellent work and I don't want to seem like I am talking bad about a ROM by name. The ROM does what it says, it runs well with no real bugs, and it is fast as hell.
That being said, I can't help to be disappointed. The ViperDNA ROM is AMAZING. I mean, it is everything imaginable in a ROM. Every element of the thing is customizable, removable, colorable, and everythingelse-able. This ROM for the G2 is missing a LOT that I assumed would be built-in. I can't even move the clock in the status bar, or remove it, or color it. I can't make the navigation bar transparent, or the notification bar. It is driving me crazy that I can't even change the notification icons. They are ugly as hell. The battery icon does not even show the remaining percentage. Also there are no Settings options for overclocking, voltage regulation, CPU governor, or IO Scheduler. Sure I can check these with other apps from the Market, but I like having Settings options too. These tweaks are not important to everyone, but they are important to me.
I did try another ROM that is more of a CM10-ish variant, but that looks even worse. Plus I like a lot of the LG apps (especially the email camera) and I want to try to keep some of the identity of the device.
Make no mistake, this G2 ROM is very good. Please don't think I am hating on it. I know the dev is still working on it and is very active here and helpful. I am pretty sure the next versions of the ROM will focus on newer version of Android (4.3, 4.4) so I am not sure if any of the things I want will be in there.
So what's a guy to do?? I am so spoiled by the amazing ViperDNA ROM. Do any of you know if there are any ultra-customizable ROMs out there for the G2? I know the phone has not been out more than a few months, so maybe it is just too early.
Thoughts???

Excellent!! Thanks so much for this. I am investigating it now.
Have fun with it. It's not perfect yet, but the dev is very active with betas and issues that arise.
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.
Wait you don't want to mention a rom by name and then you proceed to mention a rom by name?
He didn't want to mention one from the LG G2 forum.
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.
So I installed Xposed and I bought the associated Settings app from the Play store. It does allow a few of the things I want, but it's just a taste. I still have very ugly battery, 4G, service, etc icons in the notification bar, and the notification icons for apps also look bad. Baby steps... at least now I got rid of the clock on the notification bar and made the navigation bar smaller.

I still have not mentioned the name of the ROM I am using now on my G2. I am hoping that eventually there will be skins/themes/mods available that will allow me to make things prettier.
Thanks for the info guys.

OK. First let me say I am not a total noob. I go back to the original droid and up to the LGG2 in rooted every device. It was, in part, due to Verizon being so dang slow to update their devices. Now, though, I am finding no real reason to root. Transparent bars are not enough for me to do it Every person I find who roots the G2 has some issue. ART crashes some phones. Others have call issues. This or that will not function. Yes it fun to play with new things, but is it worth it? I am sure there will be people that will say they have zero issues but from what I am reading, I find it hard to believe they have zero.

I have no issues related to being rooted. Now most ROMs I've tried have their fair share of bugs, but that's part of the gamble you take a with a phone as new as this. Give it half a year and most of the things developed for the G2 will be ironed out.

I agree in part, but even after they are worked out you will normally find issues, even if minor, in the best of Roms. I point to Cyanogen just as an example. They are a great group with a quality ROM. Release candidates are super stable, but will have an issue or two. They also solo not have all the new stuff people crave like a nightly will have. But with nightlies you get instability. Please guys, I know everyone is going to jump in and say how great their favorite ROM is. That is not the point of my comments. I do not care what ROM you have. There is going to be a bug. I guess stock can be the same, but in general I am now leaning towards stock uprooted. With the LG g2 I have yet to see a feature stable enough to void warranty for. In a year from now that may change. At one time or was just a hobby. Flash and try everything. Add this, remove that. But this phone has so much stock I can no longer recommend rooting to any one. Obviously I have no issue if you do. I am just wondering what is driving people to root the G2?

Titanium Backup, AdAway, Xposed
What does ART have to do with root?
edit: you should change from why root to why custom rom...and at that why AOSP based rom
It's not so much the reasons listed above though they are all good. The main reason for me to Root is to remove all the Bloatware I can off my phone. This includes apps and options. I like to get my unit down to as bare as I can and build it back up the way I want a phone to be. I got the G2 for the hardware specs and not for anything else LG or Verizon was offering me.
Plus it is fun to deal with new Roms as they are being created.
And there will never be ZERO issues with any Rom and that includes the manufacturers release. If that is so good at the time of release why would there be Updates.

I suppose you are right on the why custom room. I am stock rooted on my Nexus 10 unrooted on this. With ART, it seems to be a reason people for since that is the only way to get it on most devices. That was all I was implying there. Perhaps when we finally get 4.4 ART will be available sans root

Hi everyone. I did the dirtysanta root, went great, flashed the us996 deox rom, great again, but on neither the us996 nor the stock ls997(im sprint) the camera app is broke. Kind of. When i launch it the views are switched. When in selfie it uses my back camera and vise versa. Now i can install another camera app to work around it so its not a huge deal, but i like the stock v20 camera app. I dont know how or even if its fixable. Any help will be of use. Thanks to all who help in advance. Ps. If in wrong section im sorry, never posted before, please just let me know.
Same here...
Eager to see if there's a way to fix...hadn't realized how much I used the camera!!!:crying:
Weird how it's crapped out like that, never heard of that before on any phone.
