So, I finally went through the process of rooting my KFHD7 yesterday and installing CM10.2. I have to say, this was the best thing I've done with my Kindle since I purchased it. One thing that I'm disappointed with is the loss of ability to borrow books through the kindle owner's lending library. I knew this was going to be the case going in, but I'm still determined to find a way to get my monthly quota of free books - after all, they're dependent not on my owning a Kindle, but on my owning a Kindle and paying $90/yr or whatever we're paying for Prime now. I'm paying for it, so I want it, right?
Anyway, what I'm wondering is whether I can just download my books through the Fire Emulator? I set it up and was able to register it under my amazon account, but there's no bookstore. Anyone know if I would have success were I to get the .apk from my original fire install and sideload it into the emulator?
I made a backup of my fire before rooting and flashing, but I don't know how to extract the apk from the .img file. Anyone know how to do this? Or maybe some other approach?

Kindle bookstore. I was able to mount my backup and extract all the .apk's from my original kindle os install. The bookstore just crashed though. I tried installing all of the .apks to see if I there might be a dependency somewhere, but nothing worked. All the apps from my backup just crash.

Can't be done. The work it would take to make three stock OS Alps work with Jelly Bean would be more effort than is worth. They really on certain libraries in the stock OS that aren't in Jelly Bean.

I'm trying to install this on the Kindle Emulator, which is running Kindle OS, not Jelly Bean.

Sorry, I guessed I was a little rushed in my reading. I think you would have to make the apps part of the system partition (push it to /system/app/).

I bought the game order & chaos kindle fire edition and I want to download the game from the amazon app store with cm7 or miui flashed on my kindle fire. Is it possible to trick the amazon app store into thinking I am running stock by changing the Build.Prop or anything? Or does anyone have a fix so I can download my (kindle fire edition) apps?
I have also read a few things that I would have to download the game then back it up with titanium, but some people say that even doing that method, gameloft games dont work.
Thanks I appreciate any help you may have.
don't think that will be possible with an other rom than stock
if you fake the fingerprint in build.prop you'r still not registered with amazon
the only possibillity i see is to flash back to stock (the prerooted image from here !!!), register, download the games and copy the apk to a save place.
if the games will work i don't know but you have them and can go further
you could try downloading them and then backing them up with titanium backup

I was able to back up the game, and I then restored it on cm7.
It loads the game and then needs to download 6 mb of additional data.
After finishing the download the game restarts and keeps force closing.
The only other thing I can think of is to change the build.prop back to original stock while still using cm7.
Or I wonder if the android market version would work, but I really dont want to to buy it again..!

Android Market version works fine on CM7... I used this thread for build.prop modifications.
I’m with you on this; purchased a bunch of Gameloft games during the $1 sale on the Android Market with the expectation that once I got my Kindle I would be able to play them on a Tablet as I can’t play games on my phone. After I got the Market and found out they did not show in the market or be side loaded went and purchased the Kindle additions. Have since flashed CM7 and was able to download the majority of the games from the Android Market after using the CM7 Build.Prop tweak that has been floating around but still have 2 of 8 games that after downloading additional data will tell me that I should ask for a refund because my device is not compatible. Otherwise the Build.Prop floating around for cm7 worked out.
I haz idea
could someone back theirs up and post apk link?
Noob here,
With instruction from this fine community I have managed to successfully root my kindle fire and install cm7 via Twrp. I still prefer amazon's native kindle book app, so I jump back in forth between CM7 and kindle fire via the backup restoration option in TWRP. This process is somewhat lengthy and I was curious if there is a dual boot option yet. Or even if there was a way that we could launch amazon's launcher directly from CM7. Thank you for taking the time to respond, and thanks you for the work that you all do.
Cheers
Kinna curious as to what is different between the native reader and the kindle app from the market?

That is a Home Launcher switcher - he would need a ROM switcher to go between CM7 and the stock Kindle Fire Android OS.

Can you recommend one? Do I have to partition my device to have basically two system partitions? Any pointers, links, hints appreciated. Thanks!
There is an app called boot manager for some phones that creates img's of system, data and cache and let's you install a ROM to them then let's you reboot into the other roms where it mounts/loads the img's instead of the partitions. I am a beta tester for the app and could probably provide the files needed for them to add support for the fire but a few issues come to mind like.... Sdcard space, it's rather limited on the fire... I'm not really sure i even want to ask the dev's about the fire because of that issue right there. On my d2, the img's take up a lot of sdcard space.
I accidentally replaced the contacts apk's on my Kindle Fire with the apk's from my Android phone (thinking it would import my full contacts instead of just the name and phone number) and now my contacts don't work and googleservicesframework keeps force closing...I know, I should have made a backup first. Dumb. I'm still learning.
If anyone has the Kindle: accountandsyscsettings.apk and .odex,contactsprovider.apk and odex I would appreciate it very very much. Thanks.
Just download the update.zip from the Amazon site and pull the files from it.

OH MAN do I feel dumb. Thanks! That worked perfectly. I always do this kinds thing when I first root a device. I need to be more careful with system apps.
This is probably a little off topic Airmaxx23....
...but how do I get my kindle reader back. I am on CM7 and was wondering if there is a way to access books as I would on stock?

Yeah, download the zip update from amazon, unarchive it, and put the launcher on your kindle.

Just use the Kindle app from the Android Market.
I use the app from the market and honestly I think its better than the original one that came with the kindle.

Hello,
I rooted my tablet a while ago, froze several apps with Titanium and all works fine. Save for the Kindle app. I'm a Prime member and I use Kindle. Since the root, the Kindle app won't update and often crashes. I must often re-download books I had already downloaded before from my library. Is there a way to fix the Kindle app?
I tried freezing it with Titanium along with other apps that seemed related, and then to install an apk of a different version, but it will never install.
I was afraid to uninstall Kindle with Titanium. But is it even possible? If yes, will I be able to install the Google Play version of the app after? Thing is, I don't want to lose access to the Kindle app for good...
Thanks for any input.
Hello
I had similar problem before (rooted). You can try to clear the cache in recovery mode.
+ plus power on button to clear cache.
It works for me afterward.
I cleared the cache already, not in recovery, and it seems fine so far.
Still, being able to uninstall the Kindle version and get the one on Google Play would be best....

Good to hear that
The Kindle in Fire OS has some advantages over the one in Google Play...
However, it might be better to have a unified interface for most people ( I am one of them) , please share if you can get rid of that and if any side effect available.....

What are the advantages of the Fire OS Kindle vs the Google Play one?
I'm still very hesitant to completely uninstall it with Titanium (if it's possible), fearing I could not be able to install it again after the fact... If it goes on like now without crashing or erasing my downloaded books, I'll live with the Fire OS Kindle for now...

1. It don't need you to login XD
2. Not sure if Newstand an exclusive feature to fire os kindle ?
I think the package name for both play and fire store might share same directory so they are killing each other.
I am not a hardcore android user so i wont' able to test all of these, but worst case just adb update the fireos again should be ok
I have a HD 10 (7th Gen) on Fire OS 5.4.1.0. I uninstalled the kindle app using titanium and didn't have a backup (whoops). I downloaded from playstore and it installs but does not open. Anyone have the original kindle app apk? Also have same problem with Amazon Shopping.
I rather not have to factory reset and root again. Only have a few frozen apps..Advertising ID, amazon.jackson19, devicesoftwareOTA, Email, Fire Keyboard (Asian, Chinese), Fire Launcher, Forced OTA, Silk browser, Silk content service, Special Offers, and Unified Search. Any suggestions???
I've got a Kindle Fire HD8 and installed the Play Store on it and it works great but is there a way to make the device show up when trying to install something from my PC web browser to the device?

Usually not as the full Google framework is not installed using the methods outlined for unrooted devices.

Probably not as FireOS is not friendly to a full GAaps install. You'd need to go with a custom ROM which may or may not play nice with Google Play. Bottom line: assume browser/desktop Play Store visablity a bonus when targeting a hacked Fire device.
