Is there a trick to get Assist to work?
Its not reading text when driving and not responding back that I am driving.
But has it icon showing its working..
I am using Handcent for messaging wondering it that is why?
It only works with stock sms app or sms in Hangouts.
It's read text for me, and I use MYSMS.

Interesting... Did it offer to reply?
I wonder if having the music option on doesn't allow for the text to be read? I have the same issue and haven't been able to find a solution.

I cut it off because it was a junk text. I'll be on the road tonight, as a passenger, I'll mess with it again and check.

First, if your connected to your cars Bluetooth, turn off media (in the phones settings) and the phone will read the message.
Second, make sure your phones volume is turned up. My wife kept having this issue.
Also, make sure your location services are not on power saving

This shouldn't be necessary. I always listen to pocket casts over bluetooth media when in my truck. Assist pauses the playback when a text comes in to ask me if I want to hear it and then reply. When finished, playback resumes.
What if your listening to the radio? Like I do. Then it is necessary

Ringtone volume needs to be up. That's what controls the voice volume while using assist.

I wondered about this also. Scenario:
The phone is in my cupholder while driving. I rec'v an incoming text. Google asks if I want the text to be read. I say listen. The text is read back to me.
How can I reply to that text that was just sent? Do I have to go through the entire process again? Say OK Google Now, say send text to that person. Say the text I want. Also how can I get the text that I just wanted to send read back to me? It says here is your text do you want to send it? Well if you have to look at your phone to verify if the txt is correct, what's the point?

After reading the incoming text, it asks you if you want to reply using the set canned response.
Oh okay, so it won't let you reply with using the voice to text commands? It only let's you reply with the 1 auto response like I'm driving I'll text you later or what ever you decide? That's too bad. It would be nice to have a text conversation back and forth only using the voice controls.

Yeah, I am sure it is a liability thing... much like how every time I start my truck, the nav system puts up a screen that says I shouldn't use it while driving. :-[

Same problem for me. I'm in a VW Golf with the standard factory radio. If the phone is connected and offers "media" audio then I don't hear anything unless I switch to the bluetooth input. Phone calls work because it switches to phone mode, but navigation, this reading stuff and others don't.

Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Just go into the Google Voice settings and then sync and notifications. There you can disable the notifications.
do i uncheck "inbox notifications"? i already had "text messages" unchecked.
Wondering the same thing. I don 't have anything checked and everything is still routing to my GV inbox. Aggravating.
Go to www.google.com/voice
Click on Settings in the top right corner
Find your Sprint phone in the list of phones and click Edit
Toggle the check box for "Receive text messages on this phone."

First, go into the Google Voice app on your phone and turn off all notifications.
Then, goto voice.google.com and change the setting Matt2053 is talking about.

I'm not using Google Voice because of this. I used to use it because of the visual voicemail and it being converted to text, but I don't want it running everything on my phone. It needs much more customization.
I understand some ppl use it for voicemail only but how many others use it because sprints service is garbage where your at? Ex being that i miss 3-4 calls n bout 5-7 txt a day jus using sprint service...how do i know this? Google voice tracks calls and texts even when the phone is off (not saying my phone is off tho). Ill get notifications in gv n never get a missed call or txt thru native apps. This is very disappointing on sprints part...

I leave gv open to receive messages(get notifacation in gv app n turn off notify in native and go sms apps to prevent triple notifies) but i use go sms to send texts out unless i get a text fail because service drops. Then i open gv to text thru 3gdata or wifi. I do this because I get texts that i dont get thru my native text service or go sms apps but can still reveive them in gv even when not on wifi because google intercepts it. Get missed call messages also even tho my phone doesnt ring.

I have been using Google Voice since you had to get a invite to use it. I originally got it for my Archos 5, as it doesn't have a data plan from a carrier. I find it nice that when I got my Optimus s, and Epic, all of my messages were there. No having to copy messages over or anything like that. I didn't have to change my number between phones either, which is always a hassle. I love this app, and have for a longggg time.
Ever since I decided to try gv, it asks me to press "1" to accept calls when I answer them. Even tried uninstalling it, and it still does it. How can I stop it from doing that? Even still get transcribed vm in messaging too. Annoying...

it's easiest to change those settings by logging into the GV site, and changing your settings. If you've enabled the carrier integration, you'll have to call Sprint to get them to remove it.

Hey guys. thanks for having so much available info on damn near everything. I have been looking but still have not found what im looking for, so i have made a new thread. First off i have the moto triumph cm7.08 rooted. Next the kindle fire rooted(stock os). I was trying to find a way i could send txts from my kindle when its wireless tethered to my moto using the hot spot built in to the cm7. i used to have an app that let me tethered my old Samsung to a computer and i was able to send and receive the messages right from my puter. Any help or guidance will be appreciated. thanks in advance.
google voice works great
Yeah, Google Voice is what I use.
thanks to the both of you I got it working on my phone and the voice calling aspect is odd i have to press 1 to accept any call now coming in which is a bit annoying, i looked in settings and did see anything to stop that but i was on mass public transport so it did not have 100% of my attention. anyways thanks again.
Ok I think I go it working.... nope any input would be awesome.
Voice is fine if you already use it, but for those of us that don't it would require giving out a new number to everyone you know. Unless I missed something, that isn't very feasible for all of us.
I would think some kind of remote control or text forwarding app would be better... I would like to send and receive txt from my cell number on my kindle, and I think that's what the op was wanting as well

I just reviewed that app and that looks like its for desk tops or laptops. Im trying to keep my phone in my pocket and test from my kindle fire which is connected through the internet on my phone hotspot or barnacle both work on my phone (cm7 tinkerguys beta.08)
Simple for me is using yahoo! Messenger. I already have an account, and can txt to any number I choose, not just those on my list. It goes to the recipient as my yahoo screen name and when they reply to the txt, I get it in my messenger on my kindle. Great free, no tethering required option. But I still have to be connected to wifi, so maybe not the option you're looking for.

I have a Nexus 4 (bought from Google) with the stock ROM and it's up to date running 4.2.2 on T-Mobile USA. I've tried reading up on the problems that others are having with their Nexus 4 and MMS and no one seems to be having the exact problem that I am having. I always turn my data off so I conserve battery power, it has never given me problems with other phones in terms of receiving/sending MMS messages, data would come on briefly when receiving/sending an MMS with other phones, but the Nexus 4 doesn't do that automatically. When data is on I receive them fine it seems. For a while I didn't know why I wasn't getting MMS messages. Then I installed LightFlow lite for the LED notification colors, I gave MMS messages and SMS messages different LED notification colors. Then I would get notified only by the LED notifier when an MMS was coming through, but I still wouldn't get the message, nor was there an audible notification. Sometimes I am able to turn on my data before opening the messaging app (stock one) after I notice the MMS LED notifier blinking. Other times they will come through the next day when I turn the data on, and sometimes I never get them. This is the only phone that has done this, my Android HD2, Sensation, and other phones haven't given me any problems, whether I had the stock ROM or changed it out. The problem seems to lie in how the data from the cell tower doesn't get turned on by the messaging app when the MMS is being sent/received. If I knew how to enable the messaging app to be able to do that, then I wouldn't have that problem. I have also tried using the facebook messenger/SMS app and I think goSMS, I don't remember either one helping the situation.
Please don't respond with "well turn your data on" or "this isn't a problem because you have your data off, so you don't receive MMSs". I'm used to my other phones turning the data on when an MMS is coming through. This one does not, I like being able to stretch my battery life.
Can this be alleviated by changing out my ROM? I'm wanting to swap ROMs anyway, so I've been researching which ones I would like to switch to. The other reason I want to change ROMs is I'm having problems with other stock apps that I can't uninstall and reinstall, like google maps always says my GPS is turned off when GPS and data are both on. I can use the mapquest app fine without getting the GPS error, it's something with google maps.

Ok your issue is that those other phones would automaticlly turn your data on when an MMS would come in and then turn it back off. This has to built in on the OS level which AOSP doesnt support. You are not gonna find anything to fix this.

My "auto retrieve" is selected, and always has been to my knowledge. My problem is the MMS not getting sent or received when I have my data turned off. The messenger app isn't turning on the data to allow it to be sent/received.
I do like the idea that zelendel stated about using the firewall. I hadn't thought about that.

Yeah, my plan is 200 MBs a month. I selected that, I don't need more. I only check email, facebook, forums, and do google searches from the phone, and the occasional directions. It never goes over 50 MB, unless a few apps start hogging data (geico brostache app for example). It's either ads or geico is collecting data about my location/driving. I have to kill it with my app killer after I use it because it will go over my 200MB limit after a few days.
Yeah I use AFwall donate. You can set it up to allow apps to only use Wifi or cell data, none or both.

well, thanks. I consider my problem solved then. Your advise seems solid, and it is a problem that there doesn't seem to be a simple fix for. I'll look into AFwall. I was looking for a firewall like that a while back, downloaded some awful ones, then gave up on the search.

I just finished unlocking, rooting, and putting cyanogen mod 10.1 RC2 on it. My friend just successfully sent me an MMS and I definitely had the data off. It works now! SOOO now I can leave my data off AND get MMS messages . Awesome!!
Hey guys just got this phone today loving it. I have a question when I was using the stock LG keyboard I could add Emoji the problem is they would only send as mms. Any way to have them send as sms?

Is there a way to send a picture with WiFi and data off. On my htc one messaging app would enable data to just send the message then turn it back off.

On the bottom left of the keyboard there is a smiley face , hit that and hit the smiley face on that screen. it will show you all of the emoji's.

Well, if you download Textra SMS there is a setting in which it will only turn on your data to send MMS and then it will automatically shut it off. Great way to save data and battery. I've been using Textra for a while now and its simple, light, and fully featured.

I have a lot of experience with textra but I am really enjoying the stock messaging app. On my htc one the stock app could do the same thing as textra that is why it is weird that my g2 can not. I like the little pop up box. It works well.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you but I send mms over WiFi all the time with no issues. I just turned mobile data off and tried it and it went through just fine. I'm on the T-Mobile version.

Strange i am on the att version when i turn data off and try to send a picture i get the error "no data connection will send message when connection becomes available."
I am trying to use the same apn settings i had on my one, but so far nothing seems to work. Will keep trying that was one of my favorite features of my one that i would always receive mms instead of having to click download it would automatically do it.
