Unroot, OTA then reroot? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Beans said in build 5 you will need to take the OTA before flashing as there is kernel changes.
Does anyone have confirmation of keeping the data in the rom slots?
I used kingo

So I'm asking if I unroot with kingo.
Take the update
Reroot with kingo
Re - install safestrap. Will I be able to activate and run the rom slots that i have right now with my current data on them.
Since they will be on the old kernel
Can they boot up?
Or is it just going to be all lost?

What method did you use

Actually Kingo works. I forgot to turn off my anti virus

I have confirmation that kingo works.
And safestrap works.
But had anyone ran the old backups or reflashed a rom with the old kernels??

when taking the update does safestrap need to be uninstalled?

I didn't and it was fine

How did you unroot?

Is it confirmed that if I'm rooted and just take the update that it will loose root? What if I turn on survival mode in su?

Do you know what firmware you're on? I don't what stock rom the guy flashed but it must not have been the stock firmware or you wouldn't have twrp.

Your are on mdb firmware. If flashing custom roms is important to you what I would do is use Odin to upgrade you to mdl firmware. That is probably the same firmware that you have the update for based on its small size. If you use Odin you will lose root and twrp. But you'll be able to put those back on.

If you run into problems just ask. The firmware you can get from sammobile.com. You have to register but it's free.

Are you sure you want to take that update (I'm assuming it's the MF3 update)?
If you do, you will be limited to using safestrap and the custom roms you can flash in the future.
If you stay at MDL, you can still install a custom 4.3 rom (or the stock 4.3 release without bootloaders once it's available).
You can even install stock MF3 without the bootloaders from the dev section to get the update.
If you want to have an unlocked bootloader and have complete freedom to flash whatever you want on your phone, you only want to update to MDL as mentioned above and not take the MF3 update.
Once your at official OTA MF3, your bootloader is locked and there is no turning back (just trying to help and make sure you are aware of what happens if you take the OTA and upgrade to MF3).
Good Luck

NB1 to MK2

i tried the NB1 to MK2 method. the odin failed for no reason, saying that "Completion(write) failed". i tried several times and tried again after rebooting the computer and it worked. but the problem is that my phone wont boot. it's stuck on the samsung screen. how do i fix this? i did everything right! i double checked before initiating the odin. the phone wont even go to the downloadmode. Can JTAG fix this? JTAG worked last time when my MF3 got bricked.
also it wont even get to the stock recovery

Ijust saw that there isnt a root method yet for NB1. If you haven't upgraded to 4.4 yet then you should try to get flashed back to MK2 and root it until there is a reliable rooting method for 4.4

I bricked my phone by that method. but since there is NB1 full tar, i'm gonna give it another try if the root method doesn't come out. I don't know what the problem was, but anytime i do something, i screw up my phone. I was a dev for Galaxy A in Korea, but now things have changed too much and now i barely install a rom.

Yeah, rooting was so much easier back in the day of unlocked boot loaders. My Galaxy Skyrocket just demands to wear a new rom every chance it gets. The Galaxy S4 on At&t is more difficult & the instructions must be followed exactly when flashing custom roms or it's Odin tar file party time. All in all, it's so worth it. The Kit Kat roms that are out thus far are just amazing. Thanks XDA!
But still i cant install AOSP roms. I like AOSP better

People have done it successfully, but the OTA only installs if your system files weren't modified at all. I couldn't the OTA to install - probably due to changes I made in Xposed. I'm going down the leak KK route for now.

OTA failed for me as well. I have removed or frozen just about anything Verizon. Waiting for the MD5 firmware from Sammobile to download so I can try to Odin the file

Well, I took the leap.. downloaded the md5 file from sammobile and flashed via Odin.

Does anyone have any tips or what to look for if the update keeps failing?
I had Xposed Framework installed...and I think that's the only thing that I had installed that modifies system files...but I uninstalled it's modifications from within the framework app itself, then unistalled the framework apk, then all of the module apk's, then I disabled SU, but the update still won't take...
Anyone have any ideas without losing all my stuff?
Thanks!

I just wanted to report back and say everything went great and I am now on NC4 with root! Yay!
Just for the record, in SuperSU I had set SuperSU to DISABLED, then set the Survival Mode to ON, then set default action to DENY. Not sure if that matters, but that's what I had and it worked.

To clarify, how did you finally get the OTA to take in the first place? I did the same as you - uninstalled Xposed modules and framework, reverted framework-res, disabled SU, unfroze any applications, but OTA failed.
EDIT: Or did you Odin back, then disable SU, then OTA? Just confirming before I do it
Thanks!
If you really want to keep root I would not flash NC4 at all, you're risking the possibility of never getting it back. No one has found any major changes from NC2 to NC4 so you really won't be gaining much but could lose a lot.

Yeah, I hear ya. I generally like to just stay stock+root, though, so staying with the official OTA is generally my preferred route. Might just wait and see what comes out in the next few days.

has any1 tried to preserve root in an OTA update for 900F?
Moreover, is there a way to find out if the OTA will flash kernel or not?

Best way to keep root is to flash the new updated factory rom with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root with nearly 100% certainty. Survival mode may or may not work after an OTA, Chainfire doesn`t guarantee it.

I`am not sure wether flashing an older rom will or can overwrite the new bootloader and if it leads to a faillure of the flash or tripping KNOX. Logicaly i would say option 1 but as said not 100% sure. Look on Google for more info before you try it.

---------- Post added at 10:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:56 PM ----------
Downgrade flash succeeded, KNOX still 0x0, bootloader downgraded from NG2 to NE2! You need to untick Auto Reboot in Odin before the flash because it doesn`t boot without a full wipe in recovery, so after the flash pull the battery, wait 10 seconds and reboot into recovery, data factory reset and reboot. Done

N910PVPS4COK1 100% Stock kernel ROOT. :)

Thanks to @Chainfire and his method to root on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Samsung devices on 5.1.1 can now enjoy root with a completely stock kernel with SE Android "enforcing." I will be updating this to support "systemless" root, meaning you will be able to achieve root without modifying a your system partition thus making the system believe you are "Official" and is the first step towards being able to accept OTA updates while being rooted.
Instructions:
TAR: Flash with Odin, install SuperSU via TWRP or Google Play.
ZIP: Flash with TWRP, install SuperSU via TWRP or Google Play.
TAR: Download Stock OK1 Kernel with Root support (TAR)
ZIP: Download Stock OK1 Kernel with Root support (ZIP)

Thanks to @Chainfire and his method to root on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Samsung devices on 5.1.1 can now enjoy root with a completely stock kernel with SE Android "enforcing." Does this mean Android pay and such will work with root?
Anyone heard any news on this?

I have COG5 Rom. Can I flash this kernel?
Dang that was fast. Awesome work!
Was about to flash this through odin but realized I took the OK1 update. Is this still safe to flash??? I'm gonna hold off before pulling the trigger just in case. Glad I checked!

OK, I attempted to do this... I Odined using the AP option as indicated above. I installed SuperSU and Root Checker Pro. SuperSU and Root Checker Pro show "no binaries" installed. I'm wondering what I did wrong? I have redone this about 4 times.
