has any1 tried to preserve root in an OTA update for 900F?
Moreover, is there a way to find out if the OTA will flash kernel or not?

Best way to keep root is to flash the new updated factory rom with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root with nearly 100% certainty. Survival mode may or may not work after an OTA, Chainfire doesn`t guarantee it.

What rom did you flash, everything above NE2 cannot be rooted with Towelroot anymore. If you flashed NG2 only CF Auto Root will root the device atm.

You can always flash a NE2 rom and root with TR again and try the survival mode in superSU Pro to keep root. It may fail but the chances of succes are greater.

Read this http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s4/788644-knox-security-locked-bootloader-new-firmwares.html and judge for yourself. I`am not sure wether flashing an older rom will or can overwrite the new bootloader and if it leads to a faillure of the flash or tripping KNOX. Logicaly i would say option 1 but as said not 100% sure. Look on Google for more info before you try it.

Most bootloaders except some US models like Verizon and AT&T are unlocked afaik, The problem with the NG2 and newer bootloader is that it cannot be replaced atm by an older bootloader.

Wait a minute, just flashed NE2 over my NG2 and lets see what happened Realy curious if KNOX is tripped.
---------- Post added at 10:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:56 PM ----------
Downgrade flash succeeded, KNOX still 0x0, bootloader downgraded from NG2 to NE2! You need to untick Auto Reboot in Odin before the flash because it doesn`t boot without a full wipe in recovery, so after the flash pull the battery, wait 10 seconds and reboot into recovery, data factory reset and reboot. Done

Your are on mdb firmware. If flashing custom roms is important to you what I would do is use Odin to upgrade you to mdl firmware. That is probably the same firmware that you have the update for based on its small size. If you use Odin you will lose root and twrp. But you'll be able to put those back on.

Are you sure you want to take that update (I'm assuming it's the MF3 update)?
If you do, you will be limited to using safestrap and the custom roms you can flash in the future.
If you stay at MDL, you can still install a custom 4.3 rom (or the stock 4.3 release without bootloaders once it's available).
You can even install stock MF3 without the bootloaders from the dev section to get the update.
If you want to have an unlocked bootloader and have complete freedom to flash whatever you want on your phone, you only want to update to MDL as mentioned above and not take the MF3 update.
Once your at official OTA MF3, your bootloader is locked and there is no turning back (just trying to help and make sure you are aware of what happens if you take the OTA and upgrade to MF3).
Good Luck

Hey friends:
im a normal member and everything above is only sharing
So you may get upset because of this thread
but i'll make things clear, everytime i open Q&A forum i see repeated questions everywhere
so here ill put some repeated answers about those stuff above
1. knox: well when you buy a new galaxy s5 the knox state will be 0*0 , but when you root your phone, flash custom recovery, custom kernel or custom rom this will trip knox and the knox state will be 0*1 and your warrenty will be void.
P.S: flashing firmware via odin will not trip knox
- so if you want to root without tripping knox you can go to this website : http://www.towelroot.com install apk by pressing the sign.
you will be able to root your phone quick from the phone itself but only if your phone on firmware from 3rd june or less
or your phone will not be rooted, but you can also root it by chainfire method from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537
you can also use mobile odin to flash firmwares but be carefull to be sure about your phone model.
you can install the app from playstore or from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
P.S: firmwares can be downloaded from here : http://www.sammobile.com
i hope you Moderators understand me and dont get angry or close this thread because im only sharing and thought it will help my friends and the new forum members.
and at last im a member and i have the right to post what it usefull to xda community
hope that i helped.

AFAIK it will be fake, the only way to officially convert it to original is, uninstall root reboot and then reinstall root and SuperSU to user directory, not to system. This method worked for Roms prior to 3rd June.

Yes, i only flashed the older firmware without a extra PIT file or bootloader file. Make sure to untick Auto Reboot first in Odin, after the flash pull the battery, wait for 10-20 seconds, boot into recovery and do a data factory reset and then the phone should boot normal and both the firmware and bootloader are downgraded to NE2 and KNOX remains 0x0. At least it worked for me this way and i expect it to work for others the same way
Hello!
I got some questions regarding updating to lollipop.
Im running G900F stock android 4.4.2 with root (knox 0x0) right now (Build ANE2) and Im planning to upgrade using http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/official-lollipop-5-0-sm-g900f-t2962141 guide.
My questions are:
1. Do I need to unroot first?
2. Can I install "Poland" version if I dont live there? Will it affect anything?
3. If I update this way, will it affect my apps?
4. can I recieve OTA updates afterwards (when they come out)?

First you need to downgrade to a 4.4.2 firmware supported by towelroot (Like ANE2)
In order to do this, you just need to flash the firmware through PC ODIN, no extra files. Just be sure to make a WIPE DATA/CACHE in recovery before booting after flash. (Disable auto-reboot option in ODIN)
Then root with towelroot (won't trip knox).
Then download the last version of MOBILE ODIN PRO.
When you're done with this, ask me for further steps I'll answer you in a sec, I just don't have time to write full instructions now sorry.

No. Once you got root you can flash custom Roms and then you can even update the Kernel (maybe...might not be needed so). Only for rooting the unsafe kernel is needed.
There might be the possibility to downgrade without tripping knox via Odin but I'm not quiet sure.

They are working on a s6e version and in the thread he says it should work with all kernel before may 3. You won't be able to flash a recovery but on the s5 it was possible with mobile odin to flash custom Roms without tripping knox. I assume it's the same for the s6.
Downgrade without tripping knox should be possible with official firmwares via odin. It worked for me on the s5. Not sure about the s6. That's why I wanted to make sure the kernel is still exploitable.

thanks man ? sounds promising
Heads up for anyone attempting to flash it on another version.
Attempted to flash the Vodafone 925F(ODG) version on my W8. System only. No boot/radio/csc. The version boots fine even on older kernels, no fc's even without a data wipe. Sadly no in-call audio on W8 and it will be the same for TMO people as well.
For others with any 925F, you should be able to download the full image from SamMobile and then extract the system.img and boot.img. Convert them to ODIN flashable packages and then flash the tar files individually with AP mode in ODIN to upgrade. If you're using TWRP, you can then boot in and flash SuperSU and gain root back. Unsure when kernel sources would be released for the update.
The Vodafone image had 0 bloat on first boot so it should be the same for others.
Edit*
Please make a backup still to be safe. Also have a full flashable image ready incase flashing goes bad.

Please what do you mean by individual?
Also after flashing, will it trigger knox?
Do i need to be rooted to flash?
I have already combine both file and used tar package to make it flashable with odin

Take the ODG zip and create an Odin flashable tar package of only System.img and boot.img.
Once an image comes out for your carrier, you can update bootloader/radio if you choose.
Not sure if it will trigger KNOX. If you're worried about that, stick to OTA update from your carrier. You do not need to be rooted to flash an ODIN tar.

Hello,
I have a galaxy s4 on 4.4.2 that I rooted using kingroot a while back. It is a US Cellular SCH-R970. Knox has not been tripped. Under device status it says the phone is custom. This means I cannot update to 5.0.1.
My question is, how would I return the phone to official status without 1. Tripping knox, and 2. Keeping all of my data. Also, do you know if I can root with kingroot once I get on 5.0.1.
Baseband is R970TYUFNK1.
Thank You!
Hi,
Flash a proper complete stock firmware via ODIN. Firmware for R970TYUFNK1 is R970TYUFNK1 (itself).

Would you happen to know where I can find a download for that? Also wouldn't flashing that delete everything?
Thanks for all the help!

SamMobile, Samsung Updates, or via SamFirm app. I usually rely on SamFirm.
Edit: As long as Re-partition and NAND Erase All is unticked on Odin, it should be fine.
PS Note: You can install newer firmware over your current firmware via Odin, too.

It would be wise to backup and wipe data before flashing. Otherwise you might encounter problems.
And do not use kingoroot to root lollipop. It used to not work or cause problems. Use cf autoroot method, if your device is supported.

Problem is cf auto root trips knox.
If I flash R970TYUgoh2 would I keep knox at 0x0 and all of my apps? Then I can root with kingroot.

Yes, but backup is mandatory. About Kingroot, see again previous post.

Having knox triggered is just a bunch of crap from Samsung to scare you. Unless you actually use knox. Or if you are afraid from losing your warranty. Which is also crap, because, whilst reading the warranty file, I saw that it won't cover water damage, it won't cover a broken screen and a bunch of other stuff. The only thing it covers is actual hardware failure. And if the phone is new, that's pretty unlikely. Even if it does fail, Samsung has no way to see if knox has been triggered until they change your hardware and are able to boot up the phone. At that point they can't refuse to take it into warranty service anymore.

Wow, that warranty is a load of ****. Also the phone is over a year old so I'd doubt it's still under warranty anyway.
What would you recommend to make a backup? I don't have fast Internet at all (300 kbps down), so I think a local backup would be more efficient.
Thanks for all the help! Have a good Christmas!

OK I flashed 5.0.1 successfully, all my data carried over. Now I need to root. Do you know where I can download the cf autoroot files for jflteusc or sch-r970 on 5.0.1?
There is a cf auto root thread in the general section. Or you could simply google "cf auto root s4".
Make sure to read the thread.

cwm is outdated. Use twrp. And yes, you can install it via odin or other methods.

OK I have that installed now. I'm looking for some new roms and found that there are practically none for the sch-r970. Could I just use roms for the gt i9505 (jflte) or would this not work at all? I'm looking for a 6.0 rom.
JDCTeam AOSP has your device model on the support list. They have Lollipop and Marshmallow.
But you should be able to use other GT-I9505 roms too.

Under their downloads section they have 2 untagged files (doesn't say GSM or cmda) and one GSM (won't work). Will one of the untagged roms work?

Marshmallow roms have been split into gsm and cmda, due to changes in the radio. You have a cmda device.
The initial build of aosp marshmallow was for both cmda and gms devices. The newest build (the december 24th build) is split into two. Gsm version has been released but cmda version needs more work.
So you will have to download the 6th december build which was unified. Or the lollipop builds.
Lollipop builds have a different thread and a different link.
