Would a rooted g2 without a custom recovery and stock rom be able to perform a safe software update? Even if various mods etc. (for example xposed framework) have been installed? Thanks

you mean an OTA update? I haven't had my G2 long, but in my experience, it's never a good idea to take an OTA with a rooted phone. Some just overwrite root, but the Moto X would bootloop

Ya an ota... Just got my g2 and am not too familiar with the flashing process. I'm not sure what roms are compatible for the Rogers variant.

I have a D803 (Rogers, Canada) running stock KK 4.4.2 rooted (4.2.2 was rooted and I kept it when upgrading to KK).
Now, a new update is available (with, among other goodies, Knock Code).
Phone notifies me an update is ready. I can download it but can't install because the installer stops and displays "root is suspected".
Anyone knows a way to install the update?
Do I have to "unroot" for real or can the installer be tricked into thinking the phone is unrooted (like some sort of temporary unroot).
Thanks!

Have you removed bloat/modified the system(xposed/mods) If so then you have to put everything back to stock
Sent from my LG-D800 running stock kk, rooted with philz using XDA app
I am in the same boat. My phone is rooted and has no bloat but it took the Kit Kat update. Now that the knock code update is out, it won't let me take the update. I get the "suspected of rooting" error message too. Only difference is I am running some Xposed modules.
I disabled my Xposed modules but left everything installed. Rebooted and attempted the update again. Still the same problem.
Then I uninstalled Xposed and all its modules and still the same problem.
If you find out how to take the update, please up date this post so the rest of us know how as well.
Thanks

everything needs to be completely stock so that you can ota, if it gives the suspected of rooting then the only way to ota is to flash a stock kdz via r&d/flash tool and then update

yes that's correct
Updating through the 'LG PC Suite' or 'LGMobile Support Tool' should work though
Yes, except the LG suite wants to flash the Bell version of the ROM and using the KDZ file, I can flash the Rogers version of the ROM.

Have stock with root and exposed and modded camera. Not risking the update. I just tap to install and then when prompted to continue, hit cancel.
Knock code does not offer me anything. So unless there is a good reason to have to re-configure the whole bloody phone ... this update will not be missed.
Curious if anyone has had thought to try the update to N900VVRUCNC4 using SuperSU survival mode?
Edit.. see below link for root on NC4

There is a few threads in General where people have done it successfully . I don't know if I would be willing to try it , but it has been reported to have worked for at least 2 people so far.

People have done it successfully, but the OTA only installs if your system files weren't modified at all. I couldn't the OTA to install - probably due to changes I made in Xposed. I'm going down the leak KK route for now.

OTA failed for me as well. I have removed or frozen just about anything Verizon. Waiting for the MD5 firmware from Sammobile to download so I can try to Odin the file
SuperSu survival mode
Well, I took the leap.. downloaded the md5 file from sammobile and flashed via Odin.
Alas this is not the way to keep root. I no longer have root. And now have all the bloat from Verizon back on the phone.
So much for trying to be a pioneer.
Now where did I put that hammer.....

Yea me too. I should have used Odin to reinstall 4.3 to stock Then root, then take OTA as my ota wouldn't take.

Does anyone have any tips or what to look for if the update keeps failing?
I had Xposed Framework installed...and I think that's the only thing that I had installed that modifies system files...but I uninstalled it's modifications from within the framework app itself, then unistalled the framework apk, then all of the module apk's, then I disabled SU, but the update still won't take...
Anyone have any ideas without losing all my stuff?
Thanks!

I guess I'm just a little nervous since I've never used Odin before...
But if I follow this thread:

...I should be OK right?
I just want to return to latest JellyBean (MJE) stock, root (with Kingo), and then update to NC4 with root intact.

Just be cautious. It doesn't always work to to update to NC4 w/ root intact. I did it just to see if it was possible and then posted to let everyone know. Kinda wish I hadn't mentioned anything about it.

I just wanted to report back and say everything went great and I am now on NC4 with root! Yay!
Just for the record, in SuperSU I had set SuperSU to DISABLED, then set the Survival Mode to ON, then set default action to DENY. Not sure if that matters, but that's what I had and it worked.
Thanks for the tips everyone!

To clarify, how did you finally get the OTA to take in the first place? I did the same as you - uninstalled Xposed modules and framework, reverted framework-res, disabled SU, unfroze any applications, but OTA failed.
EDIT: Or did you Odin back, then disable SU, then OTA? Just confirming before I do it
Thanks!
If you really want to keep root I would not flash NC4 at all, you're risking the possibility of never getting it back. No one has found any major changes from NC2 to NC4 so you really won't be gaining much but could lose a lot.

Yeah, I hear ya. I generally like to just stay stock+root, though, so staying with the official OTA is generally my preferred route. Might just wait and see what comes out in the next few days.
Hey this is my first post and Im sorry if some of this is a repeat, I looked around for a little bit and wasnt able to find any answers.
I have a note 3 on verizon and i finally got it rooted on MJE. I have SuperSU installed as well as xposed installer as well as wanam xposed and a couple modules. I was trying to update via OTA and it constantly gives me error 402. I have tried hiding superuser and it says on odin? i believe that im on the offical rom and everything.
i just cant get onto kit kat no matter what i do. it downloads and once it tries updating i get the error.
Is there anything im really missing out on with kit kat? I want to install S view all covers and also want the XLTE. thats the main reasons for me wanting to update.
Is there something wrong with my phone? How can i get the update now? Thanks

You need to be unrooted stock to accept the OTA. Currently no way to root the ota. However there is a kitkat build (nc2) that was rooted. This is the build that everyone is working off of, so you can just flash the firmware / nc2 rom and you will be on kitkat rooted.
Thanks for the reply!
I've heard of people still taking the Ota while keeping root by putting supersu on survival mode though. Should I check that off and then click unroot in Supersu to take the Ota? Thanks

A warning to all of you!
Now that T-Mobile has started soak tests for Android 5.1.1 for the S6, I went to the "Update" page in settings. I clicked update... and alas... it said my device has been modified in an "unauthorized way", and refused to update.
Hiding superuser from SuperSU's setting did nothing whatsoever. I have a custom kernel and I've rooted.
So a warning to all of you - don't root your phone if you want updates.

You need stock kernel briski
Odin
Stock kernel and stock recovery should be enough. Or flash the same ROM as you have on top on your current throught Odin, update and re-root. But I'm not sure that root is already available to 5.1.1
This apply to any brand root phone. No OTA will work with root phone, some more you in custom kernel.
Where could I get a stock kernel for Rogers mobile?
Actually anyone can still get ota normally if they just rooted their with everything stock kernel rom and so..

Then just re-flash stock recovery after rooting and you will be ok!!!
We all know that rooting borks the system files somehow as we all no longer have Deep Sleep after rooting so dropping stock recovery back resolved the issue for me and I no longer received the "modified" message when checking for updates. With TWRP recovery I do get the message. If that does not work for you then simply re-flash the stock rom, get your update (if any) and re-root if necessary.

Lot of conflicting info in this thread. I'm confused.
From what I understand, the latest Firmware update/OTA (OCF build, I am sprint) fixed the deep sleep issue. So if you have that build and applied root, you should still be good, right?
An if you apply root, you cant take an OTA because it modifies recovery. But you are saying if you root, then re-flash stock recovery, you maintain root and can still receive and OTA. Can someone confirm all this as accurate?

You can get it from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/general/sm-g925f-s6-firmware-thread-t3078841
I've had a quick just around but can't find any info on the negatives of rooting the s6. What functionalities do you loose by rooting this phone even if you install a modified Samsung rom? I didn't get the z3 because once rooted you lost digital rights to the hi def audio and camera processing
