If you didn't get first time it's fine to do again or if you had and lost from ota its fine to use ioroot method, ioroot is a pretty safe and quick way, afterward I would uninstall superuser and install supersu imo

Can I update System OS after Rooting?

Just rooted my N7 and when I rebooted, I got a message "System Update Available". If I update the system, will I lose root?
Try it and let us know.
from my experience with updating previous device after roooting, you will loose root after the udpate but you can still root again.

But then if I have to root again, I go back to the original OS version, right? So seems like a waste of time?

Rooting and unlocking the bootloader are not the same things. Flash su.zip to root.
If it is an ota update...go in superuser user app and check ota survival and ur root may survive the update

Just flash recovery and then download the supersu zip. Flash the supersu and you are rooted

I used CWM to install the original zip. It prompted me before rebooting if I want to keep root/recovery and to fix it.
I used this thread to reroot using adb...

I used the Nexus 4 1.3 toolkit with updated files
As a precaution I backed up my folders and make a Titanium backup. Technically re-rooting will not WIPE phone like it did first time I purchased it.
I could have installed CWM but prefer to keep this phone stock, considering its as pure as it will ever be and want the OTA updates.
But there are so many options to get ROOT lots of options. Love it so far.
You can use cwm for flashing the ota to avoid the hassle of using adb sideload. You can choose stock recovery after flashing the su zip. Just use the cwm to flash ota and su. Just my 2 cents

I just paid the £1.95 for Su Pro, which keeps root over OTA updates. Worth the money IMHO, I have wasted more time that that in faffing around each time.
Just rooting it like you did first time will work.

Just root again, OTA will make your phone rooted again!!!
Wow. Thanks everyone. I am gonna try a few these. I had no idea su pro kept root. Only had i known
I learn.
After you reroot, get OTA Root Keeper from the Play Store so you can restore root in the future after an OTA
ok... so i figured out an easy way... i used nexus toolkit to root in the first place and then saw this on wug's website... followed the direction and got root back... Thanks everyone for your help
also, its not clear below, but these files are replaced on your computer under C:\Program Files\WugFresh Development\data
"Yes, I am aware that this isn’t working on 4.2.2 right now. This will be fixed in v1.6.3 which will be released ASAP (within a few days or sooner if possible). As a temporary fix you can replace the old adb/fastboot/dll files in the toolkits /data directory with the new ones: new_adb_and_fastboot.zip just download that zip and extract/unzip its contents into the toolkits /data directory and agree to overwrite those files, then proceed to use “Any Build” mode to perform subsequent operations like rooting. Again, this is just a temporary fix for those who are impatient."

4.3 Root because i am a moron

So i was in such a rush to update to 4.3 that I Odined back to stock MF9 and then flashed the 4.3 update zip. Im really happy i got my watch working but now i miss Titanium Backup and all the goodies....has there been any word on a root process for 4.3 (flag indictator or not)
Cf auto root works I hear. Sets the flag off though.

Yea, saw that in the other thread. That sucks. Glad I don't rely on TiB for a phone. Because I don't use many apps anyway.

CF Root
CF root works and everything went pretty straight forward. I had issues with root sticking but after i ran it again it was good. But, I learned the hard way KT kernel does not work with 4.3 TW at this time. I did the noob thing and forgot to back up before. But, I was able to go back to TriForce till a better flash is capable of the 4.3, due to my firmware is updated.
I did the cf autoroot..i dont see SU anyplace...i downloaded from the market. Nothing seems to be requesting SU But, apps that need root ARE working WITHOUT requesting Su ....strange

It's because of the install-recovery.sh file in system/etc. It restores the stock recovery, if you have a modified one, one each boot. Just delete that file and reinstall recovery.

Root access

If I root and after I do it says that I don't have superuser access, do I need to unroot and try again. I used the ioroot method. The day before though I took the ota update. So from what I've read if you do so you can't get superuser access with this method. Also I will search for a way but could someone point me in the right direction to root properly.
Thanks

After I root with Towelroot, will I still be able to get the 4.4.3 Update OTA when it comes out?? Also if I then do get 4.4.3 and install, will I keep my boot?? Or back to 0 and have to wait for a way to root it?

I'm only guessing based on experience on other devices. Generally the ota will work but you do lose root. So yes, there will probably need to be a new and different root method once 4.4.3 comes out.
Also, if you have root and modify or delete any system files the ota will fail.
