just got a prompt for an update i'm already on 2.3.4

Do not update if you want to keep root. It blocks root.

If you root before you update, then you will keep the root. Just don't install Clockwork mod. I think that screws up the update, causing it to fail. Anyway, My phone is rooted and on 2.3.4 and I did just this.

I'm going to ftf back to 2.3.3 to get root

unlock your bootloader and you can root every firmware version by flashing superuser zip file in CWM, even 2.3.4

Will rooting disable OTA updates?

Question is simply in the title, I haven't found a clear answer to this. I would still like to receive OTA updates, but I have a few reasons to have my device rooted as well. Does rooting at this point in time disable OTA updates? Also would it be okay to flash these OTA updates or could it potentially brick my nexus 7.

Just rooting? No, but an ota update will remove root.
You only run into problems after installing a custom recovery.

So if I do update my tablet via an OTA update, would I just re root it the same way I did originally?

Exactly.

Or you could use Voodoo OTA RootKeeper.

Would everything on the tablet get erased again, or is there a way to re-root without unlocking the bootloader again and erasing everything?

Not if you use the rootkeeper app

Sorry newbie with a 7 here.....
I don't wish to use a custom rom, but root and install either CWM or TWRP for recovery, will I stil be able to get the OTA with those please?

As it was stated above, you can't install a custom recovery and get an OTA. At least not with a little work.

So, OTA will remove root. But will the update also remove all the modifications i've done like copying nexus.xml (file for getting unlimited photos storage) to /system/etc/sysconfig and editing build.prop?

So if I were to root to get features such as ad block would I still be able to get the updates straight from Google? I'm assuming I would have to reroot after each update? Sorry for noon question this is my first nexus device and I haven't had it that long. Still trying to get everything switched over from s3

I still get google updates just fine OTA. Whatever method I used to root seems to keep itself rooted after updates so far, the but it's so easy to root it hardly matters, but if in have to ill just re-root.

No, you will lose root access. Which means you will have to re-root it again.

You'll lose root but for some reason I never do because something I installed while doing it the first time fixes it for me. I wish I could tell you exactly what that is, but I've been through four updates since last fall and kept root on all of them. I just have no idea what it was that I did so right!

If you're already rooted then just install OTA rootkeeper and it should keep root after updates

[Q] I just rooted my M, is it safe to install Xposed on the stock rom?

So this is not my first rooted device but it is my first time rooting my Razr M since it got upgraded to Kit Kat. It is also my first time installing Xposed so some help would be appreciated.

Yes is safe to install xposed... here is a nice collection of modules ... Be sure to unlock your boot loader before the next ota is pushed as when the next ota comes we may not be lucky enough to find a root method...

Is unlocking the bootloader necessary if i don't plan on installing any custom roms? If i needed to return to stock i could just use RSD right?

When the next ota update comes you will lose root and if there isn't a root exploit for that version with an unlocked BL you can always flash SuperSU via recovery and get root back... And yes rsd is an option to return to stock to accept the next ota

good luck and enjoy. it's safe. i rooted and unloacked my razr m after the KK update, and installed xposed for the first time. its great - some of the modules make my life so much easier.

How do I perform system update without losing root?

Not sure what you are looking to gain from updating. I've been told adding mods as you like to mock update, as oppose to taking the update and losing root because of the patched exploit is the better way to go.

Nope, locked bootloader prevents changing the kernel, so once you upgrade that's it.
To the OP: 4.4.4 for the Verizon S5 isn't even out yet.

I saw a question just like this about a month ago and one the replies was something like this... " if you people out there want the new stuff just to be running NEW, you shouldn't even be rooted because you don't really understand the value of it. You don't even appreciate it." You should be happy, as it is, with the fact that that there are at least 5 Custom Rom's out there AND all you had to do was sideload an apk. Updates are not necessarily stable OR really add anything...usually just a patch for those that are too eager for "New", so you can't be rooted.
Why do you think there are OTA blockers on these Rom's? For a reason. It's just too easy now. You didn't even have to plug your phone into your PC and execute a console exe like for the S2. Some of us actually had to wait patiently for like a month just hoping for a developer to find an exploit! :SMH:
