[Q] I'm not getting updates anymore - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a Note 3 international, I rooted it and I knew that it will void my warranty, but I don't really care about that.
What I didn't know that rooting will stop the updates, when I go to [Setting -- General -- About -- Software Update] that's what I get "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
That's what I get in Odin Mode (Pressing Power + Home + Volume Down)
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
Warranty Bit: 1
More Info
Model Number: SM-N900
Android Version: 4.3
Build Number: JSS15J.N900XXUCMJ7
So, I was just wondering updating over Kies won't work too?
Is there more downsides that I don't know off, except for the warranty thing?
Also, is there anyway to reverse this? I mean like getting everything back to normal?
I would like to get my updates through Samsung Kies like I used to, if it's still possible obviously.
I tried searching before posting but I couldn't find much help, thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.

You'll still get updates via KIES but you'll lose root once you do update if/when needed.

Thanks, but what about the updates through the phone?
Also is this reversible?
Anymore downsides that I don't know off?

I didn't really get what you are trying to say.

You can receive update from phone if you are unrooted. To do so:
1)- Download stock firmware from Sammobile and update it via Odin.
2)- After flashing stock firmware, you will be UNROOTED and you will be able to receive OTA update as normal.
But in this case, you will lose your Root. You've got to decide between "root" and "OTA update".
To me, when I decided to root my phone, I don't care official OTA update anymore because you can find faster and better ROM here.

Samsung KNOX - a warning for the leaked 4.3 roms...

Just been through training for KNOX at work - and without blowing my NDA's - i'll pass on this for you all
If you EVER want to use KNOX - and you run one of the leaked 4.3 roms - NEVER NEVER NEVER flash any custom binaries to the phone again - you can only EVER run an offical untouched rom.
If you ARE running a 4.3 rom - reboot your phone into odin mode and see if you have a KNOX warrenty bit set to 0x0.
if you do - and you EVER want to use KNOX (and after training - im going to be using it meself) - you now can not roll back - or install a custom kernel or pretty much anything apart from further factory roms.
If you install anything else - the KNOX and TIMA systems will blow a fuse on the motherboard of your note2 and you will get flagged with KNOX warrenty bit 0x1.
This is not reversable - ever - without a board replacment.
The only effect will be that you cannot ever run KNOX after this - private or enterprise versions.
The first leaked 4.3 rom didnt have this enabled - the second one did (UEMJ5).
This is enforced in the bootloaders - once you get it - you cant go back.
If you dont care about KNOX - go hard However if your are going to use a BYOD type setup at your work and they want to enforce KNOX and youve blown the fuse in the motherboard - to be blunt - you are screwed Its not reversable sorry.
If you dont know what KNOX is actually about (if youve read "Little Brother" by Cory Doctorow think phone inside a phone type things) check out https://support.samsungknox.com/home and have a chew through it - there are some very good parts to it....
In any case - if you dont care about KNOX - go hard - nothing has changed.
If you DO care about KNOX - your not going to be able to change the firmware on your phone at all ever - if you do you will lose permanently the ability to run KNOX.
if you want to use your phone for work and work wants KNOX and your a custom rom person - your ****outaluck =)
And KNOX is not just the apk's..... its the entire stack from bootloaders upwards....
have fun peoples
I didn't think the Note 2 has the eFuse on its motherboard?
I'm running Hurricane ROM and it hasn't got any KNOX and the new bootloader stuff. I think this problem is with the "original" (leaked) 4.3 ROM
On the one hand I object to this kind of control by Samsung, it's my phone and I resent them wanting to control it.
On the other, I understand that many businesses don't want their staff using their network connections or accessing their data without protection and separation.
I do my best to not use my phone at all for my employers's business, but if they wanted me to and told me knox was obligatory then I would tell them they would have to provide a mobile device for me to use as I would tell them I could/wouldn't be able to promise that I wouldn't lose knox due to custom roms.

Backporting and using a fuse that hasnt been exposed or used previously - apparently there are unused fuses in the system there
in reply to Chris189 "I'm running Hurricane ROM and it hasn't got any KNOX and the new bootloader stuff. I think this problem is with the "original" (leaked) 4.3 ROM "
the original didnt give me the fuse setting - the new rom did give me the fuse setting
im curious to find out if a samsung signed rom with knox disabled will allow a rollback offically - but i dont think your going to get any leaking like that.
And from 2k14 going forward - all samsung devices will be running this
also take note of the "SELinux" permissive / enforced state..... enforced may break some apps....
anyways - back to work - "hoo...ray"

From what the Samsung trainers were saying - once KNOX is on there and has that KNOX warrenty bit available (can be seen from odin mode on the phone - power , vol down and home when booting) a rollback will blow the fuse even to a factory rom - not really willing to try it on my note 2 to confirm sorry
Should have said... any idea of rooting 4.3 by whatever method invalidate this KNOX thing.
Had a feeling that most rooting involve flashing at least a insecure bootloader for it to work?

Not applicable to Note2. This isn't the S4/Note3.

I don't know why Samsung implemented this stupid thing for Note2, maybe we can have 4.3 month earlier without this totally uselles ****, or have 4.3 with useful Note 3 things....do anyone know which manager decided about this ****?

Did you have your IMEI when you flashed back? May have needed to restore your EFS? Or reflash the original modem?
To put the Knox worries aside, I did the following test.
Install newest leak (MJ5) bootloader (with knox). Warranty bit was 0.
Installed MI6 and installed knox which worked. Warranty bit was 0.
Flashed CWM recovery from Odin, suprisingly knox was still working. Warranty bit was still 0. Binary flash counter increased
Restored CM10.2 Nandroid backup. Warranty bit was still 0
So it seems that with the MJ5 bootloader, no knox fuse is being blown and you are able to rollback to a previous version without issues (if you have backed up EFS when you want to go back from 4.3 -> 4.1).

if u want to go back to 4.1.2 u need newer builds which have the new EFS changes ( older builds will show fake IMEI if u don't have backup from the old EFS )
Mj5 bootloader can easily be downgraded to the previous bootloader without any issues

No mobile data after flashing ROM

Hi all
I'm finding it incredibly difficult to find information on this website. I eventually found myself in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49369627&highlight=australia#post49369627 having no idea what to look for. I've tried a number of different 'modems' in an attempt to get mobile data working with no success.
I'm Australian, and I got my S4 through telstra yesterday. At the moment, I've got as far as being able to make calls, send texts and use WiFi/sound (apparently that's been a problem for some) but still no access to mobile data. Can anyone tell me which bloody modem I need to flash to get this darned thing to work? Apparently, I'm not on the new bootloader as I don't get a message saying "Knox Warranty Void" when entering download mode (what.)
I'm using this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544474
And CWM touch recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359132
Thanks in advance
PS. The last 3 galaxy S's I've had have all not had working battery charge indicators when the phone is switched off - regardless of ROM etc. Why is that? Can developers not fix it?

I've just checked since going back to stock ROM (which worked fine) and I DO have the newer bootloader, the one that says the message about Knox.
Will this mean I need a different modem driver?

Wait, never mind. All I needed was for something, somewhere, to say "look in the About Phone section of settings and download the modem version that matches". Wondered all day how on earth I was supposed to know which one I needed :victory:

If your phone work's fine without having any issue , just leave it like that mate but if your having a bad signal/data .etc feel free to flash that modem.having a newbootloader has nothing to do with a modem . if you have a newbootloader there is a chance that you can void your warranty, IE: flashing any custom rom/root and etc , and there's no chance for you to go back in 4.2.2 as well.

First thing first. settings-> more-> about ->dvice: please state your model number.
Secondly: what, for the goddess' sake, triggered you to try the google ROM instead of the debloated TW one? Especially, if your phone was (presumably) not sim-unlocked?
I'd advice you to legally pay your operator (or someone else) to sim-unlock the phone, and then to seek for the customs/

This forum is a mess, I have to wade through a mountain of threads to find ROM's and then every ROM is posted by someone who just assumes I know everything about how android works, which I don't. I don't see any warnings on any of them about flashing if the phone is sim-locked. Why is the sim-lock a problem? The phone is unlocked anyway, it was purchased outright. Perhaps there's a central list of essential readings or somesuch where I can learn all these things I'm expected to know but if it exists, it's not obvious and I haven't found it.

[Q] How To Root My Galaxy Note 3?

I just got the Galaxy Note 3 & Gear bundle on contract today through TelecomNZ. My contract was up for a renewal & the Galaxy S5 didn't seem to have any real advantage of the Note 3 so alas I didn't bother to wait.
Now however I am at a standstill...I would really like to root my device as soon as possible. I don't want custom firmware & would like to keep the stock so if there are official updates I can get them. Can anyone assist me please with a step by step to rooting my Note 3 preferably without tripping the Knox counter that I have just recently only found out about thus voiding my warranty. I don't want to void the warranty but I would like root so I can use Titanium Backup so if anyone can please provide me with a step by step to safely rooting my device I will be so appreciative for it.
Here are some details about my phone...

Okay in that case if I use CF-Root thus voiding my warranty will I risk losing anything else. I had an S3 for 2 years and sheer stupidity resulted in a cracked screen however that was the only time I had to use my warranty so essentially warranty shouldn't concern me but I don't want to trip this Knox counter and lose key features just for root which is all I really want. I don't plan on custom firmware flashing or anything so my OTA should still work via KIES right?
Just crossing the T's and dotting the I's before I possibly ruin a good thing.
Before you root make some checks. If your hardware is OK. Download from market multitouch app to see if your screen passes the 10 fingers test. It's really important. Then stress a bit your phone hardware wise and see if everything runs fine and no defects show up. If everything is OK then trip knox and be happy.

as said by testadeferro,
make a check on your device first for the multitouch (which some note 3 users experience this on their device). So if you need to claim warranty, you are still elligible before you trip the KNOX.
I don't know about KIES, because since my S2, S3, Note1, Note2, and till now Note3, I never use KIES to upgrade my firmware. I like to use ODIN more. And yes, though u root your device, you are still able to flash back firmware (newer version) through ODIN.
cheers.

So basically if the app recognizes 10 fingers on the screen at once it's fine correct? I managed to get 10 fingers recognized easily so essentially I'm okay to root or should I be doing something else first?

[Q] SM-N900V Demo unit or "4G Test Device" Help with Rooting and installing a ROM

[Q] SM-N900V Demo unit or "4G Test Device" Help with Rooting and installing a ROM
This is back story if you want to get to the meat of the problem you can skip this paragraph:
Ok so I've done ROOTING and ROMing a few times now, with my first phone being the Samsung intercept, then the HTC EVO 4G, then it was a Nook color, then the Galaxy SII, and then I bought a Nexus and loved its Vanilla Android goodness.... but that was too small so I got myself a Note 3... I work at Verizon retailer (I'm sorry in advance) since I did a good job last month and the new Note4 came out, the owner gave me the Demo unit of the Samsung Note 3... it has never been updated because the Verizon servers does not see it as a Note 3, they see it as a "4G Test Device" even getting it turned on was a hassle since the system did not detect it as a phone more like a Jetpack I had to start up my servace with my Nexus, but the strange thing is Straight Talk (At&T) saw it fine as a Note 3... Verizon has total control of its updates and pushes them to phones as needed... mine will not update since the server does not know its a Note... SOoo I've gone back in forth from Verizon to Samsung and one just keeps pointing the finger at the other blaming each other saying that the other one is the one that needs to fix it in their system... I'm 90% sure its Samsung since they report the devices as they are made... but I digress the MAIN reason I wanted the update was for the firmware updates, but I have seen them KILL some of the V Notes signals, so maybe this is a blessing... I DO want to put a new ROM on this phone, but I'm a little worried that maybe its "different" then the other Verizon Note 3's and I could brick the device... yet I'd like to try since I am stuck with stock 4.3 and REALLY REALLY want a Google play edition type ROM on my device, something that is totaly Vanilla (GOD Verion has a ton of crapware) with some pen features of course
So since this is a Demo unit or "4G Test device" I wanted to throw out all the numbers here and have some of you check them, and or tell me if you have ever rooted and ROMed one of these... I'm guessing its the same device with some beta firmware or maybe just launch firmware. About phone goes as follows:
Device name: SM-N900v
Model number: SM-N900V
ANDROID VERSION: 4.3
BASEBAND VERSION: N900VVRUBMHV
KERNEL VERSION: 3.4.0 [email protected] #1 TUE Sep 3 23:50:17 KST 2013
BUILD NUMBER: JSS15J.N900VVRUBMHV
SELinux status: Enforcing
HARDWARE VERSION: N900V.07
What I am looking to do is Root then install the closest 5.0 or 4.4.4 ROM to stock as possible without loosing the PEN and remote apps... The google play store has NOTHING good for IR remote apps, but I can live without that... I can't live without using my sPEN... anyway if someone with more knowhow can check these numbers and get back to me that would be AWESOME I'd like to do this right away...
maybe a link or two would be awesome if its a standard Note 3 I'm not asking for a step by step here if its not needed...

I would bet, if you're at a Verizon company store...the dude in the back could flash it for you. Or you could flash it yourself via Odin or Kies. But first, I would simply try a factory reset on it.

I work for an inderect premium retailer and I'm the guy who flahses phones but even kies is not showing an update... That's why I wanted someone with the same phone to check the numbers and see if they differ... Mainly for root and custom ROM and we all know kies and Verizon software won't do that... I can follow one of the many posts on this site to do all this but I'm a bit scared that my phone is different in some way...

Other than the firmware/ROM it's not different. Use Odin to flash to a a release ROM but NOT to the latest NJ6. I would suggest NC4 and then use Towelroot to root.
As usual, it is up to YOU what you do to your phone and if anything goes wrong..no one but you is responsible.
All the info you need is in this thread

Your current firmware is pre-release, that's why it shows no update available.

I thought it needed safe strap or some junk (I haven't really got into it since I didn't know if it was OK) I'm looking for a google play edition ROM, isn't my boot loader locked? Sorry I'm at work so I haven't checked the link yet... I'm sorry if these questions are answered in the link...

Yes, the bootloader is locked. No, you can't use Safestrap until you're rooted. You shouldn't root until you get on a stock release ROM...again, NC4 is your best bet.
Read the linked thread.

If your afraid of bricking learn how to get out of a brick and all recovery info beforehand if that's too much of a hassle don't bother. Honestly you can't get 5.0 or 4.4.4. On note 3 there are no such roms. 4.4.4 is said to be unrootable. There are good vanilla roms but do research beforehand because with you saying you think it needs safe strap tells us you aren't 100 percent sure with what your doing. Yes you need busy box and safe strap and towel root is your easiest way to root and safest. Your numbers are the same don't know why you would think there not? Just be careful. You don't need a paperweight just because you want stock android.

Like I said I've done this a bunch of times, but I was asking since my firmware was A BETA unit and I wanted to make sure it was compatible with the same methods shown on this site. When I wrote this I did not read anything about the Note 3 yet and thats where the safe strap question came from... I wasnt going to read all the forms on it to find out I needed something totally different in the way of rooting or files.
As for making it a paperweight YES it would be a BETTER paperweight then full of Verizon Bloatware I refuse to use a phone with verizon software on it since I do work for Verizon and I have seen what this software is really for. Thanks for the concern but its SUPER easy, I ask all the questions so I don't get hit with anything later I did not plan on, I have never bricked a device yet, not even a soft brick... and I don't plan to.

Advice needed on updating Samsung S5 from 4.4.2 to 5.1 whilst keeping Foxfi and Root

Hi everyone,
Looking for some help on updating my Samsung S5 to the latest Verizon update which looks to be LRX21T.G900VVRU2BOK3. I have found a lot of conflicting information on updates so first hand experience would be great. I need to keep foxfi working as I have unlimited data and the phone is rooted with towelroot. Details are
Verizon Samsung S5
Android Verion 4.4.2
Model Number SM-G900V
Baseband G900VVRU1ANCG
Kernel Version 3.4.0
Build Number KOT49H.G900VVRU1ANCG
Looks like Foxfi is supported on Android 5.1 but does anyone have first hand experience? I would also like to keep root if possible. I currently have Titanium Backup and SDM frozen, would it be best to take the over air update? Lastly anybody have bad experiences with the LRX21T.G900VVRU2BOK3 update?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
dont know if bok6 version will work on your g900v. but the battery life is awesome.

That's good to know Salcykhan Yep BOK6 is the verizon update and G900V is the Verizon S5 variant.
Then install this version and root it and remove all s5 crappy app.
Plus add very few mod which make phone little sexy

Hey Keypepper,
I'm in the exact same boat as you and would love any insight you may have--if you decided to pull the trigger on un-freezing (thawing?) SDM to grab the OTA update. Root would be great to keep, but I'm pretty sure that's no longer possible in the same fashion beyond 4.4.2. Hence the massive push back to this version and utilizing the ease of towelroot. Either way, if you can pass on any add'l perspective you have, I'd appreciate it.

Hey wlhovde,
I decided to apply the Samsung policy update to keep it more secure. This did not break root.
I'll probably will add the latest kitkat version when I get the S7 or when my contract expires.
For reference.....even if prior rooting hasn't broken OTA updating (it probably has) and the OTA downloaded, installing it WILL break root......

Hate to revive this thread, but I am in the same boat and my main concern is just patching the stage fright vulnerbility so I can have my MMS back.
You can adjust the settings in messaging so that attachments aren't automatically opened. That will help.....

From what I am reading it doesn't just have to be MMS it could be from a video on a website as well. Is there no way to update and keep root?

Ah....I must have missed that part about Web videos.....mind you I don't use my phone for watching videos......My laptop has a larger screen lol.
About updating and keeping root....There are 2 ways I know of....it just depends whether you want to keep knox intact or not.....
1) Use Flashfire (by Chainfire) to keep root while upgrading with knox remaining at 0x0.
2) Odin flash (or OTA) your upgrade....this will kill root but it can be re - obtained by flashing TWRP and SuperSU afterwards.....
This method will trip knox and WON'T work on devices with locked bootloaders.....so if you're running a Verizon or AT&T device, don't go there.....

I haven't done much reading on that thread as my device is the F variant so I've never had to worry about locked bootloaders......but that thread has 77 pages of comments, so I'd say it's a reasonable bet that there's something to that method.....In fact, the members in that thread would probably be able to give you way more help than I ever could. .....

AFAIK Xposed doesn't play nice with lollipop touchwiz......it's the installer itself which isn't compatible (I think)......
If I remember correctly, somebody has created a modified installer which I think is SDK specific.....but I can't remember where I saw it......
