Instructions on how to get OTA updates on rooted phone.. - Galaxy Grand Duos i9082 General

Today I'm here to explain how to get OTA updates on any rooted phone.. Recommended to those who rooted through CWM RECOVERY
One method is flashing latest firmware through odin 3.07.But this is not practical to download the whole 900 mb file to those who have less data speed 2G like me.. That's y I ended a conclusion to grab OTA updates on rooted phone..
Tools needed..
Triangle away, odin 3.07, a backup of firmware (say 4.1.2 or any firmware of 3 to 6 months old ), superuser...
Let me explain more easily.. Will also attach screenshot for easy reference.. Step 1- open triangle away, check the option called system modified workground.. You will prompted to reboot the phone..

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 2- open superuser apps, go to settings uncheck the option ENABLE SUPERUSER, default is enabled...
That's all, reboot the phone, to make the status under settings official,
.. After reboot the phone, check the status in settings to official or not...
Step 3- now go to download mode by pressing volume down +home button +power key at the same time..
Step 4- connect your phone to pc through odin 3.07..flash firmware any outdated version (say if you have backup of previous firmware mj3 or any outdated build )..
Step 5- after flashing previous build through odin. Go to phone settings, tried to update through OTA, u will get OTA updates without any issues, but will lose the root...
After updation of phone through OTA.. You can also save the OTA updates as a backup file.. For this go to /cache/FOTA
Try to root again using chotu recovery follow the steps of rooting as mentioned on other phones..
The idea behind is... one will get OTA updates only through stock recovery..
Any suggestions or valuable comments can write here.. I always here to support..
I updated my phone using this method..Only consume 18 mb file instead of whole 900 mb file..

Is it really needed to disable superuser and the triangle away if you'll eventually wipe everything with an older firmware? -__-
Sent from my GT-I9082 using Tapatalk

There are some problems here-
1) You have to flash an older firmware if it is available with you. In case you dont, better to download the new one entirely
2) Flashing it through Odin will anyway wipe the phone unless you use TB
3) OTA can be used only with stock recovery and not CWM or any other custom recovery (i.e. OTA can be downloaded even if you are rooted and have a custom recovery but you cant flash it)

Flashing an old firmware will not factory reset your phone.. And will not delete any of your data.. Unless you do manually reset the phone..

Using triangle away and disabling super user will make system status official... Otherwise just flashing an old firmware will not make system status as official unless you factory reset the phone... I tried this method for me this method is very much successful...

Dude flashing a firmware through Odin will definitely wipe data and superuser, and it will make system status as official. No need of triangle away. I have been doing this since 2 years and even day before yesterday, i did it. And grabing ota files from fota Is a nice idea, as i got the mk3 files from @akira...'s thread, So i flashed the mj4 then just flashed the ota file from stock recovery.

Bro flashing a firmware through odin will not factory reset or wipe all your apps which already installed in your phone.. Unless do factory reset manually.. I agree that u Will lose root (superuser)... If you do factory reset then the system status become official... I recommend triangle away to disable superuser so that system status should become official..... Otherwise if you flash firmware through odin the system status will become custom only.. I will soon upload a youtube video regarding this.... Pls be patient..

@rejocie001 - Mate are you sure, flashing a different firmware version through ODIN will not wipe your data and user installed APKs ? KIES doesnt do a wipe but ODIN does. Atleast thats what I have been getting for 3 years now. And you anyway become "official" when you flash stock firmware. You only need TA to reset bin counter which should be done before flashing.
P.S.- Here's a secret; you dont need to disable SU for becoming official. I am running rooted stock MK3 with custom recovery and TA. My counter is 0 and device status is official

I did this day before yesterday.. My previous build number is MJ3..I got information from xda that new updation is available through OTA.. I know that I will not get OTA update due to rooted firmware and I don't have broadband connection to download another 900 mb rom to flash through odin.. That's y I decided to do this trick and its succeeded.. And I like to share this trick that will be helpful to others.. Now my build number is mk3 which I updated through OTA.. Here is the screenshot of my build number..
Triangle away used not only to reset bin counter and can also disable superuser on boot...

I got OTA update even though I was on rooted stock firmware with custom recovery. It can be downloaded but you cant flash it because it requires stock recovery. The only option is if someone creates an update.zip for the OTA patch which can be flashed through custom recovery

One question before I root.

On every device I've owned so far I wait for a method to fully unroot the device is out just in case.
That being said, is there a method to fully unroot and reset the flash counter (similar to the note 2) to 0 or for it not to show that a custom rom/recovery has been flashed?

Yes there are a few ways. You could install the complete stock tar which will wipe everything out including data. You could uninstall root using supersu and Odin the stock recovery. You could install team sextapes full stock with no data wipe to go back to stock without losing data. That is a few but there is more.

Correct. Odin is the easiest option. And since you would be exchanging it the full stock tar with data wipe is perfect. Just make a backup first.

Are you rooted? The update should be in your /cache folder, you can move it to the sd storage and flash from recovery. You'll probably also need superuser 1.51 zip to flash after flashing the update as you will lose root.

Yes updated last night, seen a few people having issues so was holding off, but it was pretty straight forward. I ended up downloading the grouper.zip (ota) update from the thread above and the superuser 1.5.1 zip. Fully unroofed from the superuser app then flashed the grouper.zip and superuser zip in recovery.

I also had to use the Grouper.zip to take the update. That zip comments out a line in the install script that performed a verification check that many people had fail. The released ota update continually failed for me. I never unrooted first, just flashed grouper.zip in TWRP recovery. After booting back up, I went back into TWRP and flashed the Supersu1.51 zip and got root back. No data loss. This is on a wifi, stock rom & kernel, rooted and TWRP recovery. Now on JWR66Y and happy.

Have you tried a factory reset?
You can roll back to 4.1.2 if you want, but you have to use an efs v2 modem firmware. Any modem firmware from EMG4 and after.

This and I wouldn't suggest you to revert back also because 4.3 contains new drivers,so you will lose some good gaming performance.
Also,always wait a little. Every time you install a new firmware,you always have to wait at least 1 week and phone finally will get used to new firmware,so it will become stable.

Try a factory reset first.
Backup all of your important stuff from your internal storage > Factory reset > Transfer everything important back.
4.3 is a quite nice firmware for the S3, so a factory reset should clean things up a bit.
Can anyone explain backing up efs and then going back to 4.1.2.
Also if any risk is involved.

There is definitely a risk in downgrading as your efs partition might get corrupt.
I would say factory reset first.
I'm 100% sure 4.3 is better than 4.1 in terms of everything.
as i had heard the new bootloader from 4.3 does not allow to downgrade your device
so how can u now do it without rooting the device

its not that hard,u will get many threads on xda regarding how to root your phone
basically u will need a software called odin
through odin u will need to flash a recovery like twrp,cwm or philz touch
these recoveries are available on xda in zip files
after the process has been completed your phone will be rooted and at every boot u will see a red exclamation mark inside a triangle on the top left side of screen
just follow the steps properly and u will do it safely
good luck

Yes it does, I downgraded from 4.3 to 4.1.2 just fine with odin.
I will never downgrade as 4.3 has new drivers and some new designs which I like (except settings).

You can't go back to JB from KK... You may as well have said to connect to Kies and let that fix it...
To the Op, check if your Knox warranty void has been tripped, if it has you may as well root and install a custom rom and/or recovery, or at the very least xposed framework.
You can't reset theKnox but you can use a mod to trick the system into thinking its official which will allow OTA updates. You may need a couple of things to be active so the OTA will install but I'll let you look that up.

Used to read about a bug on samsung phones where if it contains too many files it would show system status as modified. Try transfer as much as your files from phone memory into sdcard then remove it. Then check again system status. It sounds crazy but i'm pretty sure that's my understanding from the thread

I have rooted my i9500, kitkat version with CF root method via Odin. And i have successful rooted it. But after that when ever i click on OTA update it gives error of, your device has been modified.... update not available.
And my device status in setting has been changed to custom.
Plz tell me how to solve that. I tried unmount sd card, and cache clear from recovery. Didn't worked.

If u rooted ur phone u wont gona be able to INSTALL updates via OTA coz it changes ur system to CUSTOM. You can download them but NO install them. The unique way is flashing this file downloaded for STOCK RECOVERY :highfive:
Now wanam show status to official. There are many tweaks in this app. Changing color of clock etc. What if delete this app, my status remains to official or change back to custom.

Once you rooted the phone : you have both warranty and official support (OTA) out of the door and you can't do anything to get it back .. unless you buy another S4. Just kidding though, now you'll have to do everything manually. Juste take a look at all the available roms and install the one you like
