[Q] Updating firmware with Odin - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I want to ask if it's possible to just update the firmware, not flashing new firmware which removes all of my data.
I have rooted stock firmware and want update it to the latest stock firmware using Odin because OTA doesn't work with rooted devices.
My device is SM-N900 and rooted by CF-Auto-Root.

Yes it is possible but after the OTA update you have to re-root your device.
follow the steps:
1. Install Xposed Framework (a.k.a. Xposed Installer)
2. Tap on "Framework", then do it on "Install/Update"
3. Install Wanam Xposed
4. Open Xposed Installer, tap on "Modules" and check Wanam Xposed
5. Reboot the phone
6. Open Wanam Xposed, go to "Security Hacks"
7. Check (on System) "Fake System Status"
8. Reboot again...
9. you can go back to updating OTA

Thanks for the reply but that was not what I asked for, I asked if it's possible to update the firmware using Odin and keep all of my data as it's an OTA update.
And if I follow your steps (Xposed), can I just uninstall Xposed Installer and Wanam Xposed after I finish updating the firmware?

Waiting for the answer too.
in the meanwhile you can just backup your data with My Backup Pro and then restore later.

Sorry but these steps does not help.
Software Update still says: "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not vailable."

If it worked why do you need to update via Odin .And you still can update your stock ROM via odin by downloading the latest stock rom from sammobile.com and that's it,if you worried about your data just use Titanium to backup your data.

Dont do ota updates of you are rooted 0x0!
hit 'thanks' if i helped you

I didn't know that I can run OTA update on root device, but it worked fine till I realized that my new updated phone said "bye-bye" to root
Superuser still there but wont start. Any ideas? is it normal to re-root again?

It worked for me just fine.
I did this and see if this will help you, but I don't think there is difference between the two steps.
First I searched for "Xposed Installer" on google play but I didn't find, instead I found "Wanam Xposed", so I installed and when I ran it it asked me to download "Xposed Installer" and I hit download and installed it, then the remain steps are the same as Dahdoul's.

Your phone has custom recovery? Or only rooted?
I try many times but it still in custom status, so cannot OTA update. My phone is N9005 from Malaysia, build MJ1, with CWM recovery.

The more advanced approach is to use Mobile Odin Pro - that way on Snapdragon version you can keep the old bootloader and automatically re-inject root and keep Knox 0x0!
In your case standard Odin might also work, latest stock firmware is generally non-wipe.

the only way to update is to have an unmodified phone: no custom recovery(or else your phone will bootloop), no mods, no modded system apps, no xposed/modules but if you get the suspected of rooting the only way to ota is to go back to stock with the guide in the general section hoping the ota appears again

Can i revert from NG8/9 to NG2 with Odin?

I had a official stock firmware XXUA1NG2.
I used Towelroot apk to root my SM-900F and stay on stock.
I received and installed the NG8/9 update and lost root.
Is it safe to flash NG2 using odin to become official again and be able to use towelroot again?
PM is no problem, i am very gratefull for help
Best is to flash a NE2 rom again, data factory reset and reroot with TR. Then install superSU Pro and enable root survival to koop root after an OTA update. Or follow this guide to root an NGx rom with a older kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-triggering-knox-2nd-method-t2843044.

So after the flash:
- Factory reset
- Root with TR
- Install superSU and Pro and enable root survival. Do not make superSU a system app.
- Now you can download and install the NG9 OTA and retain root.
I always use Odin 3.09 and had no issues so far, link http://odindownload.com/.
Good luck mate

The Pro app gives you more options and will serve you for years so its money well spend imo. You have the option to make superSU a system app in the Pro options but that means you can never install an OTA update because the system is modified so i wouldn`t do it.

Just install superSU and Pro, reboot and open the superSU app and enable the root surival mode and thats it mate. Then check for updates in settings/ about he phone and you`ll get a notification for NG9. Accept, download and install it.

Then it was rooted by the former owner allready. Samsung cannot deny warranty if you have a legitimate claim unless they can prove that rooting was the cause of the defect. At least you don`t have to be carefull anymore as KNOX is tripped anyway (just kidding)
Now you can use CF Auto Root to root http://download.chainfire.eu/397/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-klte-kltexx-smg900f.zip or Towelroot and flash custom recovery`s, roms and kernels as you wish. I`d still update super SU and install superSU Pro.

[Q] "App not installed" error

Hi I have a weird problem. I hope someone can help me out.
1. Rooted SM-N9005 with Towelroot. Successful. Verified with Root Checker. Then I installed SuperSU and also Titanium Backup (to remove bloatware).
2. Before rooting, everything was ok! but PROBLEM 1 occured as now when I try to dial, the phone, contact and even message have all stopped, "unfortunately ... has stopped working"
SO I read in the xda forums and tried App manager > All > wipe cache but still didnt work.
Went into samsung recovery and wipe cache/data but still didnt work.
Didnt want to install TWRP or CWM as I read these will trip KNOX.
SO I reset to factory settings.
3. . Even after reset to factory, phone, contact and sms didnt work. BUT NEW PROBLEM 2 is now I cannot even install apps such as towelroot, rootchecker, titanium backup or SuperSU... "App NOT installed"
Please anyone help me thank you

If you change for GBNL8 lollipop rom
Choose rom pre-rooted it's more simple ( Aryamod for exemple )
but make a backup of your current rom with laster TWRP recovery ...2.8.3.0 ( additional check box EFS and Modem)
And download tool Savemypitfile to save your PIT file (if you would like downgrad) need root and debuging ckeck

Well then you will be surprised to know that the people with root can update via OTA, it's just that they will loose their root privileges after updating.
The only requirement for the updates is that you need to be on the stock CyanogenMod recovery to take the benefit of the updates also you need to make sure that the apps or zips that you flashed might not have tempered with the core framework of the system as the update checks the signatures before updating and if they don't match installation fails.
As for the OP, make sure you flash the stock rom and that's it. You don't need to unroot in order to get the OTAs. But if have missed it you can always flash the update manually

I'd recommend to go and watch this thread on YU forums, it's not mine, but it's the first post that came on how to get the update manually.
But still in short all you need to do is :
1. Download the OTA's .img file from here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5qkmXkPr5WyMy1FUm9rNGdZZ2c/view?usp=sharing
2. Download the stock CyanogenMod Recovery from ere : https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BwVitsnY-WxvRVNYcnhRM05vX2c&usp=sharing
3. Download Flashify from app store if u r sure that you r rooted.
4. Open Flashify >> select "Recovery Image" >> select "choose File" >> browse the Recovery .img file that you downloaded and flash it.
5. Open Custom recovery, go to "Update" browse and select your ota update .img file and flash it.
It'll take about a min to flash it and if all goes well, you will have the updated build and the proximity issue fixed !

[ROOT][RECOVERY][ALL IN ONE] Cf-Autoroot-twrp-T700/705/800/805/Tab S- UPDATE 23/4/15

Updated CF-autoroot with latest Supersu binaries and combined TWRP recovery for SM-T800/SM-T805/T700/T705 Exynos only, Lollipop and Kitkat
I've noticed that quite a number of people seeking to root their device also flash TWRP afterwards, seeing as it's unnecessary to do both steps I have made an all in one package to root and install TWRP recovery.
Cf-autoroot has been updated with the latest Supersu binaries and TWRP has been updated with my fixed version (ADB root shell and Download mode fixes).
UPDATE - I have updated all versions with new builds. TWRP is now v2.8.6.2 and now includes the fixes recently pushed to their repo for encrypted backups. I have also addressed the slow wipe issue, cache, system, etc., which some have experienced and should now be much quicker.
Each device now has it's own build, this is to ensure that TWRP recovery build properties reflect the device it's installed on. ROMs such as CM12 should now install without issue.
Feedback is welcome.
Simply flash with ODIN. Odin 10.6
cf-autoroot-twrp-t700
cf-autoroot-twrp-t705
cf-autoroot-twrp-t800
cf-autoroot-twrp-t805
Check root status with ROOT VALIDATOR

UPDATED TWRP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3074633
NOTE: It is important to boot to recovery after flashing or twrp may not stick and will be replaced with stock recovery.
When flashing uncheck auto reboot in Odin, immediately after flashing manually reboot and boot into twrp.
Manual reboot is POWER + HOME +VOL DOWN then as soon as the screen goes blank immediately change to VOL UP whilst still holding the other buttons.
Credits to chainfire for his great work.

I guess he made an unnecessary post and wanted an admin to delete his post, and not yours.

Why the forum doesn't allow users to delete their own posts is beyond me?

Unfortunately AT&T lock the bootloader, so atm you're stuck with a device that cannot be modified in any way.

After using the app with odin, root checker indicates that "Root access not properly configured or granted".
Root question comes up but can not check the box to allow.
Had an issue like this on a different device and it was corrected when I changed to ART, but do not know where it is in 5.0.2?
Just tried TWRP, and it is allowed.

Use Root Validator and post the output. Root checker doesn't give enough information.

Looks like you are rooted but are not granting root permission when asked.
Is the post below any solution to your problem?

If you still have problems you could open the Super su app and change in settings to 'Grant' root access by default.

BINGO!, it was Lux. I did an uninstall and rebooted and had ROOT.........WOW, strange that this would be the answer, but it worked for me at this moment.
Thanks
Not sure if it matters but what version of twrp is being installed?
