Just came to the nexus 5 from my nexus s , before their used to be something called NSTOOLS for nexus s kernel stuff so i was wondering whats an equivalent tool i can use (preferablly for free =))
Currently running franco kernel r 19
trickster mod.
but if you like the kernel you use, you should support them and buy their app as it guarantees 100% success with the kernel tweak app whereas a universal app like trickster will not absolutely work with that kernel.
None, usually content with default settings...
I use the trickster app! It works great
Kcontrol is pretty nice. I also did like trickster mod when I used it on the s3 and s4

Gnex was all trickster all day.
Now I like kcontrol. Allows you set set governor / frequencies per core. So you could overclock core0+1 and underclock core2+3. And make 0+1 ondemand and 2+3 interactive.
I mean if you wanted to. I leave settings stock.I just like having the option. Plus show-p is a wonderful developer and I get better battery life than stock Google kernel on his without any performance loss.

I built my own. Everything seemed to be matched up to certain kernels so I made SKU Kernel to work in pretty much every situation. So far, it has.

I have Franco and trickster. This is mainly due to the fact that I would trickster more but use Franco's kernel and would like to support him

What will a custom kernel do for me. I have been thinking about rooting but I do not want to flash a ROM. I am really loving stock. How will a kernel benefit me. I heard they have something to do with battery. How is that?

With a custom kernel you can do some really cool tinkering for example
- underclock (save battery)
-undervolt ( MAY save battery , but will def help with heat)
- change governor ( may help battery)
- change screen properties . I.e colours
- GPU over clock / under clock ( obvious)
Other cool performance tweaks as well

Thank you. Sounds pretty helpful for battery. Do you recommend any kernels?

I'd go with franco's kernel for now.
All of them are new and may have bugs, but franco is a longtime kernel developer and he's the least likely to do stupid stuff or claim features that actually hurt performance or are just placebos.
Franco's kernels seem good. I use it on my N7, but I just wouldn't use it yet as he's working blind. Faux has some amazing battery saving kernels. Mathkid's kernels pretty well as well, I used to use his on the Nexus S back in the day.

I'd be careful about recommending a kernel where the developer is doing so blindly. Honestly its very irresponsible. Unless he's got a device that's 99.9% identical, i cant recommended it.

Under clock can be done on a stock kernel just needs root. Custom kernel allows over clock doubt its needed though CPU is fast enough.
Different governors can be used on stock too but custom kernels may offer extra ones like smartass etc.
They may also add things like NTFS cifs run etc not available in stock.
Using Motleys kernel just now too soon to comment on improvements.

If stock is working for you, there's no reason to flash another, unless you have the itch.
The stock kernel is great, and undervolting is more trouble than it's worth if you're starting from scratch, unless tinkering with voltages is your thing, and there's zero need to overclock the N4 CPU or GPU IMO. There aren't a ton of options, yet, either. 3.4 is pretty young yet.

As someone who is using Franco's kernel at the moment, I can recommend it strongly. It's running very well :good:

Agree. Franco is amazing and once he actually has the device he will only improve.
Yeah -- that was my other experience, I'm using franco's kernel and have been since day one.
Quite stable at least so far, no crazy changes.
What is the best kernel overall?
The best kernel for battery improvement?
Best kernel for performance?
and the best kernel for gaming?
.....and GO!
Stock.

Based on my experience. For overall excellent gaming performance with good enough battery performance, I suggest M-Kernel a25 or a27. And to over clock your device after installing the kernel, use Trickster Mod from play store.

theres no best kernel, they are all good. theres only whats best for your and your devices needs. evrybody is going to say that the best kernel is the one that they use, no one is going to say that they use the worst.

Well I base it on most popular. If its popular it means its good and works most of the time. Maybe I should've used better wording?

popular doesnt mean good. try out a few, find what your device likes. every device is different and reacts differently with each kernel.

Yes you can read there, OP just updated the score. If you want to try, try trinity for best performance, m kernel for best overall. I'm using Mkernel now, really good kernel. No problem so far.

I get about 10-11ish hours "screen on" with light use on franco kernel #38
Motley kernel
i tried
Motley kernel,
Franco kernel
Trinity Kernel
Trinity is the fastest if you tweak it good..
but on the downside the most glitch..
but Morfic just released two updates in two days...
so theyre fixing it.
So im back with Trinity Kernel.
Its good..
and the only Kernel i find that you can change GPU speed, ofcourse Using
the glitchy Trinity Toolbox
I love Franco.Kernel R31. Battery life is great and performance is good as well. R38 is the newest and great, but I feel performance is a bit lacking on 38.

Closed, try them and see
yesterday i brought new nexus 4 after trading my galaxy s3
i rooted my nexus installed recovery
flashed franko kernel
and installed paranoid rom
now the phone heats up too much even on normal whatsapp chatting
i tried to underclock it from setcpu but still heating is there
later i thought may b my phone doesnt handle paranoid or franco kernal
then i flashed modaco rom
but unfortunately swipe to wake doesnt work
i have still not tested the heating problem
can anyone guide me on setcpu setting or which rom / kernal to try
i am more interested in swipe to wake function
I have similar issues with a lot of Franco releases, some apps like fun run make the phone super hot. I use Motleys kernel, overall way snappier, and battery life is just as good. It's in android original development. As far as rom I use cm10 kang one by trailblazers that's built from linaro tool chain with bionic commits, it is faster than stock cm10 for sure. Try it, both kernel and ROM are built on linaro, good combo.

Hello everyone,
I am searching for an app, that allows me to switch off CPU cores of my Nexus and do decide how much min core and how much max cores will work. I can't find such settings in SetCPU.
Does anybody know such an app?
Use trickstermod.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You will need trickster mod, aswell as a custom kernel with a configuarable hotplug system or eco mode.
I would recommend Franco Kernel Updater app along with franco kernel itself.
You can tweak how many cores come online when you touch the screen , max and min frequencies , screen color adjustments (Recommended values from obsanity is amazing!) , everything you would ever think of to tweak in a kernel manually , is scripted in this app.
It's highly recommended , you wouldn't be disappointed with it.

Thank you guys! I will give franco kernel a try, with the corresponding app. Because I want to try undervolting as well.
The nightly r183 seems to be the latest for 4.3 (I am running the Stock ROM). Does it have any discovered bugs?
If you want to make your device for example 2 cores on only franco kernel won't work you will need a kernel like: neo, matr1x or faux and use trickster mod (or for faux you can use faux enhancement project) apps and go in hotplug settings

Hey can anyone recommend an app to mess with/fine tune kernel settings? I've tried and do not really like the Trickster Mod app because it often doesn't save what I chose and just reverts to something different... Thanks in advance!
BTW I'm on a Sprint S5 running MOAR v2.0 and running the stock NE5 kernel.
PS- I do not want to run KT Kernel.
Anyone?

Hi,
u tried Synapse kernel tweaker ?
It's a valid generic app for work with kernel setting
There are dozens of kernel and cpu control apps. You didn't give us much sense of what you are looking for so we can't make any targeted suggestions.
I used CPU adjuster. But there are lots of others e.g. CPU tuner, set CPU, Kernel tweaker, etc.
.

Always used Set CPU, it's an old one but it's light and does the job. Has the options so long as the kernel support it.

Hey guys I have a question... which scheduler should I use when I want to play games/save battery (out of: noop, deadline, row, cfq) and which governor should I use when I want to play games/save battery (out of: interactive, conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance)?? TIA!!
For the governor, for gaming you should use performance, it maintains the device at a high CPU speed at almost all times, to save battery you can use powersave or conservative, I prefer conservative, and for normal device use ondemand or interactive. As of scheduler, I don't really know about them
BTW you can set your device to automatically change between them when needed with Franco's Per-App Modes https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.perappmodes
Its a paid app but it is worth the money
