Hey all,
I wanted to share with you my progress on a little pet project.
Since Google never got around to releasing their charging dock for the N10, I thought I'd have a bit of a play and see if I could come up with one myself. Fortunately, having access to 3D printers at work, I can!
It's designed to work with the fantastic Pogo charger available on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B2166BS/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And I'm offering this as a free download to anyone that wants it, to go and print it themselves. File is the the widely used .stl format.
Ignore the scummy white crap in some of the pictures - I hadn't fully cleaned it yet!

I have designed it to work with the magnetic charger available on Amazon, and it is designed it to fit around this case, which it does:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AD6W57W/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am more than happy to draw up an alternate version with a thinner slot, for those who go caseless. Let me know if you would like me to draw this up!
Notes on building it:
The charging port fits VERY snugly, but that's kind of the point. Once it's in, it's in!
The hole underneath is so you can then feed the USB cable back through the unit. It is necessary to avoid having an ugly, trailing wire.
Any failures, damage, mishaps, injuries or deaths that you suffer as a result of this project I claim no responsibility for, I'm just trying to help you out!
Please let me know what you think, all feedback is welcome and I'm happy to redesign as necessary!

Not for sale! Up as a free download, because I'm a nice guy.
Just need the pogo charger from Amazon, and a friendly local 3d-print bureau.

can you convert it to STEP file or IGS?
It looks great. But why create it so thick? Wouldn't it print faster and cheaper if this is thin-wall out? Maybe create a screw slot to screw in a metal plate to make it feel more solid.
How much did it cost you to print that? I don't see how the Pogo cable get fix in so it won't move around.
How much did it cost you for the 3d printing? Im taking an engineering class and I might be able to do this as one of the projects next semester.

You are indeed correct. Most 3D-print shops will be able to print it 'sparse', in as such that they can build the inner with a honeycomb structure, saving time and materials. As for costs - no idea I'm afraid - I'm lucky enough to be able to do projects like this for free!

Hi, no idea on costs I'm afraid, although it's only a small project, no bigger footprint than a CD. It shouldn't cost the earth.

No problem - if you have a specific case with a different thickness then send me the dimensions - I'd be happy to draw an alternate with a different sized slot for you!
As an FYI -
both UPS (in 4 pilot cities - NYC, SF, ...) and Shapeways.com can quote you to print it
Both quotes are in the neighborhood of $200-250...
So yeah - i think its a great idea, but one would have to really put on a thinking cap in order to hollow out/redesign it in a way to use far less material. to get it down to what I would think is a reasonable price point (~$50)

Wow... crazy money for the solid model - can they not run it as a sparse model with a hollowed-out inner?
^ might as well invest on a printer if price is around $250.
I need to do more homework on these 3D printers.
Thank you very much.
I requested this item here in Germany.
The Volume is 115 ccm, so i must pay 80 Euro for this.

I have seen this price as well, but I think it should be cheaper for a hollow version (price found on plastikliebe.de).
@jonnug
which program did you use to make the model?
I have a FabLab with open workshop here in Nuremberg with 3D printers.
If i understand it right i must only pay for the material.
I wil go on Friday or Saturday in and check this.

Hey, thank you for this! I had started to model one but wasn't making good progress then I saw this and it is perfect! I just got a Makerbot Replicator 2 for the Robotics Club at my school and my teacher said he would start the print before he left school today, but in the software for it, we chose to do a hexagonal infill to save time and filament but it is still estimated to take 6 hours. I hope it will not be too light due to it being hollow, but I will post pictures and impressions tomorrow. Thank you again!

The honeycomb infill is exactly how I designed it to be made - as you can see from previous posts the costs for a solid model are outrageous!
It took me about 6 hours to make it too.
The weight is quite light, but not so light that you send it flying when you prod the screen, so I think it's about right!
Works Great! Thanks!
Hey, I got the stand 2 days ago and its been pretty good so far. It cost about $6 to make and took about 6 hours and 45 minutes to print. It is hollow so it is very light and does get lifted up when I pick up the tablet but I'm working on a fix for that. My main complaint is when I put the cable through it was such a tight fit I can barely say it did. I ended up damaging some areas and edges using tools to push, pull, and force the damned thing through. Right now the charging part is slightly angled and I cant pull it out or push it in further to level it. The last picture attached kind of shows the honey comb fill. All in all I'm glad I printed it and thanks to Jonnug for designing it, it works even without a case on it. Thanks!

Buy the Kaiser
Seriously, I've had the TyTN apart several times, and without some MAJOR modification I don't see this happening. The slide mechanism just isn't made for it and I don't see any easy way to change that, short of making a new sliding mechanism.
I doubt this is possible as well. Perhaps when the the kaiser is on sale and someone breaks one and sells it off for parts you could try something, but making a neat job of it would probably be impractical

I'll admit it's tempting, though I am going to attempt to resist untill the price drops a bit. My Tytn is around a year old and I could now buy one for less than half the price I paid for it. You've also got to ask if the added features are worth a sizeable sum of money over the features already available on Hermes.
Or is all that just far too sensible to enter into the purchasing considerations?

Yes but these days, it depends on how each manufacturer's chipset handles code. If the Qualcomm chip has a different reduced instruction set as opposed to the Samsung, it might actually turn out to be more efficient or on a level pegging when put up against the Sammy CPU.
I know they're both ARM, but one manufacturer's chipsets are never the same as the other's... It could be that more of the processing of things like HSDPA 3G decoding, sound synthesis etc, are actually hardware-accelerated to a greater degree - so the CPU in the end has more free clock cycles to perform other duties.
Integrated GPS? HSUPA? WM6? Tilting slider display? Shiny paint job? Better storage? When T-Mobile start selling these for the same price they sold me my Vario 2 (£80, minus £15 instead of getting the first 3 months' web 'n walk free so in the end £65)... Hell, I'll go for that!
I was amazed when I got my Vario 2 from T-Mobile, given that it was a brand new model when I subscribed, and my XDA 2i from O2 cost £100 on a 12-month £30 contract (I pay just £20 a month for Flext 25 on an 18-month contract plus the £7.50 WnW, but it still works out at only a tiny bit more expensive for a much better phone)... I think T-Mobile will come proper with the goods again when the Kaiser comes out. There's no way they can't not sell the Kaiser!

You forget that the MSM7200 PROCESSOR IN THE KAISER IS DUAL CORE. One core handles the radio/phone operations and the second handles your applications as opposed to one slightly faster core handling it all

I bought a Kaiser and found its performance very dissapointing. It was very slow and the keyboard keys difficult to press (kind of sticky). I can type things much faster and much easier on the Hermes. After 3 faulty units (resetting themselves randomly) I was fortunate enough to get my money back and have stuck with the superior Hermes since. What I also found annoying being a right handed person was how the keyboard on the Kaiser opens the opposite way meaning you would need to get the stylus with your left hand and also use left hand to operate the front buttons. The Raphael may see me part with some cash when it comes to market shortly. It looks fantastic and on paper has an impressive spec so hopefully the extra processing power and memory amount to better performance....we shall see.
Dear Carbon Fiber Skins Vibrant Customers,
I have some bad news for you tonight. I've stayed up quite late several nights over the past week, doing and redoing the vibrant battery covers. While the 3M 94 di-noc primer does indeed help, it still doesn't seem to be strong enough to keep the vinyl stuck to the harsh corners of the battery cover. I've tried several different ways of applying the material; sometimes its come out well and the corners didn't ripple (yet), and other times they've rippled within 2 days. It doesn't seem to be heat related, but more-or-less time related. Personally, I'm tired of trying and don't really want to sink anymore time than I already have. You should have all gotten EVOs!
I will send the 4 that I currently have done back to you the way they are, however, I can't guarantee that the corners will stay down. I don't feel as if this is a quality or lasting product (like my evo covers), therefore, I'll send the covers back to you and issue a full-refund, unless you specify otherwise.
My Evo's skin is still doing perfectly fine 3.5 months later; I've picked at the edges to see if they were beginning to come up, but no sign of that thus-far. The exact same story goes with all of my local friend's evo battery covers that I've done for them. The only probable reason I can think of as to why the corners ripple up on the vibrant battery covers, is because they're to small and harsh to allow enough bonding between the vinyl and cover.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread and I'll do my best to reply. I'm very busy this week and will be traveling for business over the weekend. I'll mail the covers back tomorrow; please email me when you receive them and I'll issue your refund via paypal.
Regards,
-Sterling

Great product. Expensive for what it is. Can get the material from a wrap shop for under $1, or free if they have some scraps. A shop would probably install for $5.

Wrap shop?
Double post.
Not everyone has the time nor the skill to do this. You are paying for someone to go buy & stock the material, custom cut the pattern, then meticulously install it to the cover. You are paying for a handcrafted service, and I think $25 is a fair price.
If you can find a shop that can do this for less, let us know. Otherwise thanks for stopping by.

if you're using real carbon fiber, that isn't a bad price but if it is real, CF blocks radio signal
i work with CF - CF will conduct electricity, and block radio signal - has some other interesting properties in addition to it's strength, but just so folks are aware
if you're curious of the effect, cover the back of your phone with aluminum foil to see the effect - and watch the radio signal strength drop, and also see what happens to the GPS signals as well
if it's faux CF, just ignore the above

The material is 3m Di-NOC, a vinyl wrap, it's not real cf. It's available at most custom car mod, vinyl wrap shops. It takes under 5 minutes to apply.
If you think it's a fair price buy it. Just know the materials cost less than $1, time required is sub 5mins and with some research you can source materials and labor locally.

Wow. You vibrant users got some *****y ones over here in this forum. Out almost 25 pages on the evo thread - nothing like this has been posted.
If you think you can get this done for $5 bucks, go do it, take pics and post it. I highly doubt anyone, anywhere is going to wrap the battery cover, and hand cut it out to perfection for you.
You're right, the vinyl doesn't cost a whole lot (when you buy it in larger sheets), but besides there, there is a new xacto blade, the return shipping, gas to the post office to ship it back + time, and about an hour to apply it to the cover. If you add that all up, it's less than mem-wage. But hey, since I'm making such great money off this, you can take it over and do it.

Yes, I'll post more corner-focused pics later today. The botom two corners are completely smooth - the upper two corners only have one very small ripple in it, which I've smoothed out. The upper corners are about twice as curved as the bottom.
I can remove it. It's not hard. You can even do it if you'd like. Just heat it up with the hair dryer and peel off.
It's now $20. Which I think is a pretty fair price for something that's hand made.

First things first, as I said in my first post, "great product." Your workmanship neat and I'm sure there is demand for it. I just commented on the price.
I don't need to post a vid of it being done in 5mins, a simple search on you tube returns many application examples. As for your suggestions that I "take it over," even with the margins I think you have, it's worth my time. Just an observation, if it was not worth your time you would not be self promoting your product nor would you have created a website for the same.
I did not want to start an argument, nor insult your skill level or integrity. I think its honorable that you reduced your price and I hope you do well with it.

Thanks. I did see that you posted it from your phone, which sometimes leads to more cuticle speaking. While there are lots of videos on youtube of stuff being covered in 5 minuets, not very many of them are real-time. Most are time lapsed or cut together. Also, it's usually bigger items, like cars, tables, ect., which require a lot less time to perfect because they have bigger edges and sharper corners. At least from the ones I've seen. It actually takes me about an hour to do one (30ish for an evo because they don't have any corners at all). This is by no way a money making job for me. I do other work for real money. It's more of a hobby: if people want to pay me todo it, great, if not, I have a DIY for them.

I only have black, however, since I just used up my first order of vinyl, I'm going to see if their is any interest in the other colors and maybe ordering some in a different color this time. See pic below.

Can you PM me the address to send the battery cover to?

Yeah, right it does. I had a long day yesterday and forgot about posting it in there. It does add some protection from scratches when dropped, and feel/grip (feels like carbon fiber). While it's no where close to being an invishield, it's going to have some of the same benefits, and look cool, too.
Just use the paypal link on carbonfiberskins.tk. I'll send you my address thereafter.
Is anybody interested in another color? If so, let me know.

Great! I'll probably end up ordering white and more black.
I can't believe nobody wants some brown-zune lovin' color on their phone
Hrshycro's thread for the EVO looked amazing so I think I was the first one to get at him to do this on my spare back cover.
btw, I'm not good at DIY wrapping, so I definitely didn't mind the cost to have him provide his service and ship finished product back out to me for one flat rate. I guess for me $20/30 for a phone accessory is normal and isn't a big dent to my wallet. For a one of a kind look like this I'll definitely buy this instead of a generic incase/casemate.
Thanks for the great job though Hrshycro. Waiting to recieve it and take actual pics of it on the Vibrant!
So I've owned the tablet for over a week now. I like it. However the plastic backing around the microSD slot has slowly become loose and now holding the device feels like cheap plastic. I don't access the port at all, save the one time i put the sd card in.
Anyone else noticing this build issue?
I'd exchange it if it really bothers you. Mine is snug.

The Samsung cover, does it stay closed on the screen just by weight, or do the magnets actually keep it closed?

I have same problem same area since day 1. Went to exchange, all sold oit! Other 2 problems are lightbleed and loose micro usb port.
maybe you provide us with an image to better describe the situation
Well. It is quite plasticy
I have mine over a week now, and haven't felt it loose. You should trade it mate. I like the bezel of the tab but the plastic is really annoying. There are quite a few cases out there though...

I got mine a few days ago and I must say I quite like it! The only build issue I have is a somewhat remarkable amount of light bleed along the bottom but it doesn't bother me enough to post a pic of it. Best buy only had one case that didn't look very good so I'm still sporting the protective back covering till more cases are in stock. I have high hopes for this!
I am on my 3rd Note trade in. It finally is not loose next to the sdcard. I told them I expect near Perfection if I Pay 400 for an 8 inch tablet!

It really should be of better build quality for $400. Or it should be at least $100 cheaper. I have the 10.1 and it feels OK, not terribly cheap but not of high quality. I will be putting it up on eBay and going to the 8.0 regardless, due to it being a more pragmatic size for my day to day use. I’m just waiting on the black version.
I had this problem as well. I replaced it at best buy and haven't had a problem with the new one.

Sure the build quality could be better but I haven't had a single issue with mine since I bought it on release day. From the reports here it seems like maybe some of them are not as solid as others.

Obviously they are not "all the same" since some owners are reporting here that there are no issues with theirs. I think most people are going to use some type of case with this, so IMO it's not too much of an issue. Of course I would like to see better build quality, but I don't think it's that bad. I agree that the plastic back is too shiny/greasy/slippery/nasty, but then again most people are going to put it in a case.
You can get a good sense of the build quality by checking out the display units at Best Buy (if you live in the U.S.). These things are handled by tons of people and kids each day who treat them with little respect because they don't have any personal investment in them. You can always tell which products on display have subpar build quality.
And Really? It was too thick for you? How much thinner do you want it? There won't be any room for the battery if it's thinner, or for the S-Pen silo/dock. I'd rather have a bit longer battery life and a secure place to store my S-pen rather than a thinner tablet. The weight, thickness, and balance in the hand are the best I have experienced in this general size.

Oooooooo magnets Are bad man. Not so much for regular phones but for phones with stylus and digitizer it will over time cause dead area s on your screen. Don't believe me ?
Head over to the note 2 forums and check out all the problems with cases involving magnet clasps. If got so bad the companies offered to replace your magnet sealing case with one with a simple button in stead. I had one and as soon as I put it on I started having problems with the area around that magnet.
Just stay away from magnetic cases period. Just trust me. Or mess up big time. Once that part of the screen gets borked its borked
That pic is the replacement one with the button they sent me. Also watch out for those magnetic kickstand cases. Big no no too those utilize neodymium!

Yes.
I'm in even though I swore I wouldn't be. Here's my rationalization (to myself):
A lot of early reviewers said you had to touch the display or side button to turn it on. GSMArena confirmed you can activate it by shaking it using the accelerometer.
I'm getting a Note 10.1 2014 which also works with Gear so I can use it as a second phone when I want/need to. My N3 will be a carrier version and the N10.1-14 an unlocked Octa. So when traveling I can use SIMs from other carriers in my tablet if I can’t use them in my phone.
Tech is a hobby. I've wasted as much money on things of more questionable value so the Gear, even though it's pricey, will make me smile.
Samsung's got a lot riding on wearables so I'm hoping the Gear evolves quickly with updates and third party apps. Or it could be replaced by the Gear 2 a couple of months after I buy it. You spin the wheel and take your chances.
I really want to use it as an alternate to a BT headset. If the calling features on it suck I might end up returning it. But I’ll probably be unable to undo my other rationalizations.
Google Glass and Gear are not in the same category. You can where a watch anywhere at just about any time.
There are a lot places where you are restricted from actively using a phone where looking at a watch to get info would be rather benign, work during meetings, school, gyms, at many retail work places etc... Most of those would not allow wearing Google Glass ...
Even if you don't get one of the standout colors (red for example) it is pretty obvious you are wearing them when you have them on.

Where what kind of watch you are wearing would not get a second glance.
I can see retail locations asking you to remove your Google glasses as well which would not think for a second about the watch you were wearing and would not care if you had your phone in your pocket as well.
At $300, not really interested... but if I found one for in the $100 range, I might pick one up to play with one (Gear that is).
Ready pre ordered the Note 3 but cannot for the watch yet (AT&T)

Really a shame that Glass is considered a threat to privacy, almost solely because it has a camera (it's not like the Gear doesn't have one). In terms of categories, they kinda are the same. They are both wearable accessories that extend the experience of a device. The Gear being much more limited. Being around the same price, I just don't see the Gear being something (most) people would want or would use.
I believe once Glass becomes popular (not necessarily in its first iteration) stores will come to accept it, as they have with phones.
I just can't get down with the google glass in general. It looks so ridiculously stupid on the wearer. If its ever adapted into sunglasses or even prescription glasses I'll consider them. But not until then....

Not that I have cash to burn nor do I like wasting it, but I get 14 days to decide IF I like GG or not and if not I return it. But after reviewing the features and benefits I think it will offer some value to me. But hey its not like I haven't had 7 phones this year already.

They do have sunglasses. They come with lenses. To me, no, the look isn't flattering. But think about ALL the tech going into it, and the amount of work it took to shrink it to that size. It looks beautiful (IMO) from a tech standpoint, exactly as I pictured it would.
Also, that patent that Google just made for Glass on a pair of glasses.

I can see what your saying as far as how it looks from a tech stand point. I just prefer something less... intrusive. Thats the reason I love the gear. It just seems like it fits. Nothing awkwardly standing out or shouting to the world "look at me".
Yes for the phone, no way for the watch, it is just a gimmick imho.
Hey all,
I wanted to share with you my progress on a little pet project.

I have seen this price as well, but I think it should be cheaper for a hollow version (price found on plastikliebe.de).
@jonnug
which program did you use to make the model?
I have a FabLab with open workshop here in Nuremberg with 3D printers.
If i understand it right i must only pay for the material.
I wil go on Friday or Saturday in and check this.

I drew it in SolidWorks, very easy package to use.

Thanks!
