Moding The Keyboard To Tilt Up? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I was wondering if anyone knows how to mod the keyboard to tilt up like the new kaiser and no smart comments like buy the kaiser.

Buy the Kaiser
Seriously, I've had the TyTN apart several times, and without some MAJOR modification I don't see this happening. The slide mechanism just isn't made for it and I don't see any easy way to change that, short of making a new sliding mechanism.

I doubt this is possible as well. Perhaps when the the kaiser is on sale and someone breaks one and sells it off for parts you could try something, but making a neat job of it would probably be impractical
Mike

damn i want a kaiser..

thank you
i guess the only way to get it to work is to buy a kaiser.

I'll admit it's tempting, though I am going to attempt to resist untill the price drops a bit. My Tytn is around a year old and I could now buy one for less than half the price I paid for it. You've also got to ask if the added features are worth a sizeable sum of money over the features already available on Hermes.
Or is all that just far too sensible to enter into the purchasing considerations?

I beleive the processor on the Kaiser is slower than the Hermes .. I think it was something like 363 .. or something like that... ill stick with the 8525 for now

Yes but these days, it depends on how each manufacturer's chipset handles code. If the Qualcomm chip has a different reduced instruction set as opposed to the Samsung, it might actually turn out to be more efficient or on a level pegging when put up against the Sammy CPU.
I know they're both ARM, but one manufacturer's chipsets are never the same as the other's... It could be that more of the processing of things like HSDPA 3G decoding, sound synthesis etc, are actually hardware-accelerated to a greater degree - so the CPU in the end has more free clock cycles to perform other duties.
Integrated GPS? HSUPA? WM6? Tilting slider display? Shiny paint job? Better storage? When T-Mobile start selling these for the same price they sold me my Vario 2 (£80, minus £15 instead of getting the first 3 months' web 'n walk free so in the end £65)... Hell, I'll go for that!
I was amazed when I got my Vario 2 from T-Mobile, given that it was a brand new model when I subscribed, and my XDA 2i from O2 cost £100 on a 12-month £30 contract (I pay just £20 a month for Flext 25 on an 18-month contract plus the £7.50 WnW, but it still works out at only a tiny bit more expensive for a much better phone)... I think T-Mobile will come proper with the goods again when the Kaiser comes out. There's no way they can't not sell the Kaiser!

Mike, I'm a lucky guy. When I was in the store getting my TyTN my wife would have punched me if I didn't get two of them.
The same will happen with the Kaiser when my dealer has them. She's already looking forward to the "upgrade"

You forget that the MSM7200 PROCESSOR IN THE KAISER IS DUAL CORE. One core handles the radio/phone operations and the second handles your applications as opposed to one slightly faster core handling it all

I bought a Kaiser and found its performance very dissapointing. It was very slow and the keyboard keys difficult to press (kind of sticky). I can type things much faster and much easier on the Hermes. After 3 faulty units (resetting themselves randomly) I was fortunate enough to get my money back and have stuck with the superior Hermes since. What I also found annoying being a right handed person was how the keyboard on the Kaiser opens the opposite way meaning you would need to get the stylus with your left hand and also use left hand to operate the front buttons. The Raphael may see me part with some cash when it comes to market shortly. It looks fantastic and on paper has an impressive spec so hopefully the extra processing power and memory amount to better performance....we shall see.

Bye Bye Wing :(

I love my wing, well, did. It is malfunctioning now and instead of buying another one, for nearly the same price you can pick up a Hermes.
I'm not all that familiar with all these phones, but the Hermes seems more powerful, faster. Was curious if this is a good idea to switch or not...
Is there anyway to use Open Touch on the Hermes that you know of?
Thanks for the suggestions, comments.

No. OpenTouch is a Herald ROM only. The Hermes DOES have a few good ROMs, though as well as the ability for bigstorage roms. (60-80+ free mb of space.)
I guess you'll be hanging out with the Hermes folk now ...
Maybe go by their forum and check out some of the ROM's over there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=254
I don't want to go to that forum. lol.... The short time I've been here, I really like the couple people who keep this place alive!
I'm going to call HTC today sometime and get a price to fix it, TMobile said basically "too bad, so sad" because I didn't buy it from them.
Maybe if it's reasonable, I'll get it fixed and sell it... actually in really, really good condition besides malfunctioning button.
But the question still remains, is it a good switch? Or are there some negatives to going with that phone over the wing?
You should probably ask the people in that forum... I'm sure they'll sell you on it.
I guess you can look at it, like asking your current girlfriend why you should leave her for another girl... hahaha
Good point. I have a really bad taste in my mouth about HTC and T-Mobile right now though. T-Mobile won't do crap to help me, and HTC wants me to send it in then they'll tell me how much to repair. If it's a $200 repair bill... I'd buy a new one, but if I don't have them repair it, they charge you $40 to "look" at it. Unbelievable. Spending hundreds on a phone and 4 months later you got a brick due to poor manufacturing.
Ugh, sorry for the rant... I'm just a bit pissed off at the moment.
Ok well I took the plunge and got the Hermes. I ended up getting a SquareTrade warranty with it for $30, covers the phone for a year with no deductibles.. way cheaper than tmo's phone insurance too.
Anyways, I may sell the wing to someone here if anyone wants it (still works VERY well except for button issue that is probably software fixable/patchable).
It was very nice meeting you all, thanks.
Good luck.
Depends on how much you're selling it for. Also, post pictures of it to see what kind of condition its in.
Double Post
I won't be selling it until I get squared away with the new phone.
I'll definitely post up some pictures. The condition of it is Good. A few normal wear and tear scuffs but barely noticeable, no major scratches, screen is perfect condition (had screen protector on it). No wear on the buttons. I mean, really, if I had to rate it's condition on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd say it's an easy 9.
HTC said they would do repair, so if you can't fix it yourself, that may always be an option as well.
What seems like a fair price?

SOLD!!!
I'm really tempted to "sell it" to a "friend" through ebay and have him get a squaretrade warranty on it, then send it in "broken" in 3 months. then I could get it fixed for a whopping $30
But I can't get myself to do it, I'm too honest.
The Hermes can do TouchFlo. Check this ROM out:

see, you have to look at it like this.... you got screwed with retail pricing on that phone ... so its not an issue about karma. it's totally fair.
Just out of curiosity what is this button issue your having?
My camera button stopped working and gave me a scare as i couldnt get into the bootloader after a bad flash.
theformula,
The phone has a mind of it's own, The d-pad button (right and sometimes top) just start "pressing" even though they aren't pressed, imagine trying to do something on the phone, writing email, messages, etc.. while someone his holding down that button. It's unusable.
I just got my 8525, and although the form factor on the wing is a bit better (barely different), I must say, the 8525 is a substantially better device. Not trying to talk trash, I loved my wing (and this community), but it just is what it is.
How is it better?
I feel like a jackass getting into it, lol... like "your wings suck" and I don't mean at ALL to come off like that. I still love my wing and it's getting fixed soon!
But.. why is the Hermes better?
- better battery cover, doesn't slide up during normal usage
- camera takes better pictures- better color handling, plus has FLASH
- SUBSTANTIALLY faster unit, it's a 400mhz processor and it shows drastically, just sliding S2U2 slider, or pressing the "end call" button and how fast it responds, opening apps, it's insanely noticeable, and my wing was OC'd to 273mhz. The Hermes just operates way, way, waaaaaayyyyyy faster - opening htc photo album is way faster, using gestures is faster, just everything
- Less hacks, no keyboard hacks or anything to use with ROMs
- No need for battery status software
- Cool software like "flashlight" that turns the flash on to illuminate
- The ROM's are more solid, better management software - has a manager that removes virtually all need to make registry tweaks (set IE cache/cookies, remove icons at bottom of today screen, etc.)
- Keyboard works WAY better, buttons are bigger and just incredibly easier to type on, never have to re-press a button or press harder for it to recognize keystoke... this is a selling point in and of itself.
- Has 3G capability (if you ever need it)- and certain models have front camera for video conference (need 3g i think)
- Has a scroll wheel on the side as well, that is a select button as well, so you can scroll down webpages and select links, scroll through contacts, etc.
- Has push-to-talk feature - if you ever decide to switch carriers, it's more than capable.
So thats what I can say for now... really, it's just a few milestones ahead, and I can't get over how much faster it is, previously daunting things on the wing or not an issue at all anymore.
to be fair, I'll mention a few things I like better about the wing
- the rubberized grip (looks less professional, but feels better)
- spring loaded slider
- cover for micro sd card slot, the Hermes' isn't bad, but the covered one is better
- slightly smaller form factor
- better button placement
- The screen colors are a little more vibrant on wing (although hardly noticeable)
Basically, the form factor and design of the wing are nicer, but hardware (processor/camera/keyboard) and software are much better on Hermes.
But as I said, I'm NOT trying to dog on the wings - so lets not turn this into a flame xbox360 vs ps3 style war.
I take it you have sold the phone?
I hope you haven't. I have a P4350 and I need a LCD very badly. Mine was smashed a while back and I have really started to miss my phone. Right now I am using a Nokia N95 and it's great but it wasn't a Herald.
Well I haven't sold the phone, I'll have my hands on it for another few months unfortunately. Unless you are willing to pay $180 for it... it hasn't been fixed. Everything works perfectly except the d-pad seems to have a mind of its own (I THINK it's the dpad) -- condition is an easy 8.5 - 9 out of 10.

Saying goodbye to my HD2

There comes a time where one must say goodbye to a dear friend.
Today, I'm saying goodbye to my HD2.
After being on the phone with T-mobile because the digitizer in my HD2 had died. T-Mobile had offered me a chance to get another device. So I said yes wondering what horrible phone they were going to offer me.
They gave me the option of either getting another HD2, or replacing it for free (no new contract) with an LG G2x. That news sat in the pit of my stomach while he explained to me what the LG G2x had over the HD2.
I told the man to make a note on the account and that I was going to call back later to inform them of my decision. So I did a little soul searching by going over to the G2x forums and found that the development community for the G2x is sparse, but I could get CM7 and MIUI.
Here I am just thinking it over, and I finally decide to call to replace the phone. I called and asked for it to be replaced for a G2x...
After I hung up the phone I asked myself what have I done, It was like I had abandoned my best friend, And I felt miserable for the rest of the day.
The next morning I heard the doorbell ring, so I got up and got my package from the UPS man. Opened it up and the G2x wasn't even in a retail package. I felt as though this was an insult to me but I opened up the box that the phone was in and I saw the slab of glass behind the plastic of the package it came in.
The phone was just like the HD2 beside it. Similar in size, weight, and feel. I transferred my SD and sim card over from the HD2 to the G2x and tuned it on. The G2x responded in excitement, Finally awaking from its sleep. I played with the G2x trying to accustom to the smaller screen and the narrow feel of the phone.
When I finished playing with it I turned to my HD2 and went to the task of putting my friend into his box. It felt like as if I was lowering a casket into its grave. I didn't want to bear with the feeling anymore so I closed up the box and tried to forget about it, But I couldn't. And here I am Writing this Quasi-Eulogy thinking to myself, if what I did was the right choice.
For those of you who got up to reading here I thank you, I needed to write this and somehow express my feeling. I loved the HD2 it was my pride and joy, the source of so much happiness and anger at times. Think what you will but the hd2 was a brother to me, and thats how I would like to remember it as.

wdave im with you on this one. My TMOUS HD2 digitizer died also, so i was offer a new HTC HD7, that i received yesturday. That was my only option or keep the phone and fix it myself. My contract ends in 3 months. So i decided to get the HD7 then will sell it and buy another new HD2. In my opinion you did a wrong choice and letting your best friend go and not getting another HD2.

What would make you say that, The G2x in use is much faster in use then the Hd2 when I had CM7 installed.
The build quality isn't HTC solid, but it is better put together then I imagined.
The quasi curved screen at the edge makes for an interesting feel to it. But I do miss the HD2 and being able to flash Sense if I got bored of standard android.
At Wdave, I feel you all the way man. I have moved on to my next device the HTC Sensation and my HD2 still works fine and I could sell it for a nice little profit if I wanted to. But my HD2 is something I hold very close to me. It as you said has giioven me moments of great joy and pain. It was my first smart phone and the whole reason I found XDA. I will never ever ever get rid of my HD2. I will probably will it to a device museum when I die .

Respect
My feelings with you brother! i gave my HD2 to a friend to fix a problem but he couldnt(im out of warranty) now im thinking to get something like the HD2 maybe HD7s or Titan (im without my HD2 over 2 weeks and it feels so empty)
Aww, nice story
you are aware that the HD2 Digitizer had this habbit of popping out?
Bottom right corner of the device i believe, apparrently the glue has a habbit of seperating and that can lead to the phone not applying as much preasure on the cable inside, which can mean it pops out. (one of the reasons the power button can feel less responsive too)
Course it could equally be buggered as happens sometimes
If my HD2 ever died, i think id set it on top of a rocket and have it blown to pieces high in the sky, kind of a fair well bang, anything less would be a bit of a let down to a device thats already a legend.

God, I am not quite sure if the phone is really what we are talking about right now. The life is about something totally different. I kinda feel bad for you. Not because your phone has been replaced but because your life values are just sad.
i love mine... i hope they have something much better for tmobile before it dies...

oh come on, thats a bit harsh, most folk are now very reliant on phones for all sorts, when they die it can be a royal pain in the arse, some of us have had the HD2 from the get go, many of us have helped contribute to what it is now, there is a lot of history there, so slap all that together and its quite reasonable to expect people to "like" their HD2, would i actually launch my phone up on a rocket, no, although it might be quite fun for the kids with a education point of view!
I happen to quite like my HD2... Took it to a party on Saturday, showed my friends Mango and Android running on it and they regretted ever buying an Iphone. I had an Iphone to play with for a week, couldn't wait to get back to my HD2. So overall it is a great device and I don't regret having it, nor am I looking to replace it at the moment.
In fact, I have parts for another HD2 that are waiting for the main board. So if any of you with broken digitizers, LCDs or broken anything are replacing their phones and would like to part with one CHEAPLY - PM me, it will be greatly appreciated. Doesn't have to be a whole device, even just the main board will do. If T-Mobile - even better, but not too fussed.
If the phone is under a year old and is fairly good condition ship it back to HTC for warranty. Warranty doesn't necessarily have to be through T-Mobile. Just make sure you restore it to it's original state before sending it and the only cost you'll have will be the shipping cost to HTC somewhere in Texas.
The HD2 was definitely one of the most underappreciated phones of all time. I don't plan to ever give mine up, it's the best phone I've ever had. I'll be getting a Hercules when it comes out but I'll never say goodbye to my baby, lol... More like smell ya later The Hercules/GSII is the only worthy upgrade to this phone that I've seen so far. I had a sensation for a couple of months but it really wasn't much of an upgrade to be honest. Smaller screen, craptastic bluetooth, bad battery life, etc. I ended up selling it & going back to my HD2.

It's not the battery life, by itself, that bothered me, it's what happens when the battery gets old and it can't go even one day... All that said I love the idea and the look, so if people get it and start reporting a solid 24 hrs, I'll pick one up.
I believe its a technology of future came at present just like smart tvs. Not worth for now, also cost is too high to consider.

Yes.
I'm in even though I swore I wouldn't be. Here's my rationalization (to myself):
A lot of early reviewers said you had to touch the display or side button to turn it on. GSMArena confirmed you can activate it by shaking it using the accelerometer.
I'm getting a Note 10.1 2014 which also works with Gear so I can use it as a second phone when I want/need to. My N3 will be a carrier version and the N10.1-14 an unlocked Octa. So when traveling I can use SIMs from other carriers in my tablet if I can’t use them in my phone.
Tech is a hobby. I've wasted as much money on things of more questionable value so the Gear, even though it's pricey, will make me smile.
Samsung's got a lot riding on wearables so I'm hoping the Gear evolves quickly with updates and third party apps. Or it could be replaced by the Gear 2 a couple of months after I buy it. You spin the wheel and take your chances.
I really want to use it as an alternate to a BT headset. If the calling features on it suck I might end up returning it. But I’ll probably be unable to undo my other rationalizations.
Google Glass and Gear are not in the same category. You can where a watch anywhere at just about any time.
There are a lot places where you are restricted from actively using a phone where looking at a watch to get info would be rather benign, work during meetings, school, gyms, at many retail work places etc... Most of those would not allow wearing Google Glass ...
Even if you don't get one of the standout colors (red for example) it is pretty obvious you are wearing them when you have them on.

Where what kind of watch you are wearing would not get a second glance.
I can see retail locations asking you to remove your Google glasses as well which would not think for a second about the watch you were wearing and would not care if you had your phone in your pocket as well.
At $300, not really interested... but if I found one for in the $100 range, I might pick one up to play with one (Gear that is).
Ready pre ordered the Note 3 but cannot for the watch yet (AT&T)

Really a shame that Glass is considered a threat to privacy, almost solely because it has a camera (it's not like the Gear doesn't have one). In terms of categories, they kinda are the same. They are both wearable accessories that extend the experience of a device. The Gear being much more limited. Being around the same price, I just don't see the Gear being something (most) people would want or would use.
I believe once Glass becomes popular (not necessarily in its first iteration) stores will come to accept it, as they have with phones.
I just can't get down with the google glass in general. It looks so ridiculously stupid on the wearer. If its ever adapted into sunglasses or even prescription glasses I'll consider them. But not until then....

Not that I have cash to burn nor do I like wasting it, but I get 14 days to decide IF I like GG or not and if not I return it. But after reviewing the features and benefits I think it will offer some value to me. But hey its not like I haven't had 7 phones this year already.

They do have sunglasses. They come with lenses. To me, no, the look isn't flattering. But think about ALL the tech going into it, and the amount of work it took to shrink it to that size. It looks beautiful (IMO) from a tech standpoint, exactly as I pictured it would.
Also, that patent that Google just made for Glass on a pair of glasses.

I can see what your saying as far as how it looks from a tech stand point. I just prefer something less... intrusive. Thats the reason I love the gear. It just seems like it fits. Nothing awkwardly standing out or shouting to the world "look at me".
Yes for the phone, no way for the watch, it is just a gimmick imho.

Product Nexus 10 3D-Printed Dock

Hey all,
I wanted to share with you my progress on a little pet project.
Since Google never got around to releasing their charging dock for the N10, I thought I'd have a bit of a play and see if I could come up with one myself. Fortunately, having access to 3D printers at work, I can!
It's designed to work with the fantastic Pogo charger available on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B2166BS/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And I'm offering this as a free download to anyone that wants it, to go and print it themselves. File is the the widely used .stl format.
Ignore the scummy white crap in some of the pictures - I hadn't fully cleaned it yet!

I have designed it to work with the magnetic charger available on Amazon, and it is designed it to fit around this case, which it does:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AD6W57W/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am more than happy to draw up an alternate version with a thinner slot, for those who go caseless. Let me know if you would like me to draw this up!
Notes on building it:
The charging port fits VERY snugly, but that's kind of the point. Once it's in, it's in!
The hole underneath is so you can then feed the USB cable back through the unit. It is necessary to avoid having an ugly, trailing wire.
Any failures, damage, mishaps, injuries or deaths that you suffer as a result of this project I claim no responsibility for, I'm just trying to help you out!
Please let me know what you think, all feedback is welcome and I'm happy to redesign as necessary!

can you convert it to STEP file or IGS?
It looks great. But why create it so thick? Wouldn't it print faster and cheaper if this is thin-wall out? Maybe create a screw slot to screw in a metal plate to make it feel more solid.
How much did it cost you to print that? I don't see how the Pogo cable get fix in so it won't move around.
How much did it cost you for the 3d printing? Im taking an engineering class and I might be able to do this as one of the projects next semester.

You are indeed correct. Most 3D-print shops will be able to print it 'sparse', in as such that they can build the inner with a honeycomb structure, saving time and materials. As for costs - no idea I'm afraid - I'm lucky enough to be able to do projects like this for free!

Hi, no idea on costs I'm afraid, although it's only a small project, no bigger footprint than a CD. It shouldn't cost the earth.

No problem - if you have a specific case with a different thickness then send me the dimensions - I'd be happy to draw an alternate with a different sized slot for you!
As an FYI -
both UPS (in 4 pilot cities - NYC, SF, ...) and Shapeways.com can quote you to print it
Both quotes are in the neighborhood of $200-250...
So yeah - i think its a great idea, but one would have to really put on a thinking cap in order to hollow out/redesign it in a way to use far less material. to get it down to what I would think is a reasonable price point (~$50)

Wow... crazy money for the solid model - can they not run it as a sparse model with a hollowed-out inner?
^ might as well invest on a printer if price is around $250.
I need to do more homework on these 3D printers.
Thank you very much.
I requested this item here in Germany.
The Volume is 115 ccm, so i must pay 80 Euro for this.

I have seen this price as well, but I think it should be cheaper for a hollow version (price found on plastikliebe.de).
@jonnug
which program did you use to make the model?
I have a FabLab with open workshop here in Nuremberg with 3D printers.
If i understand it right i must only pay for the material.
I wil go on Friday or Saturday in and check this.

Hey, thank you for this! I had started to model one but wasn't making good progress then I saw this and it is perfect! I just got a Makerbot Replicator 2 for the Robotics Club at my school and my teacher said he would start the print before he left school today, but in the software for it, we chose to do a hexagonal infill to save time and filament but it is still estimated to take 6 hours. I hope it will not be too light due to it being hollow, but I will post pictures and impressions tomorrow. Thank you again!

The honeycomb infill is exactly how I designed it to be made - as you can see from previous posts the costs for a solid model are outrageous!
It took me about 6 hours to make it too.
The weight is quite light, but not so light that you send it flying when you prod the screen, so I think it's about right!
Works Great! Thanks!
Hey, I got the stand 2 days ago and its been pretty good so far. It cost about $6 to make and took about 6 hours and 45 minutes to print. It is hollow so it is very light and does get lifted up when I pick up the tablet but I'm working on a fix for that. My main complaint is when I put the cable through it was such a tight fit I can barely say it did. I ended up damaging some areas and edges using tools to push, pull, and force the damned thing through. Right now the charging part is slightly angled and I cant pull it out or push it in further to level it. The last picture attached kind of shows the honey comb fill. All in all I'm glad I printed it and thanks to Jonnug for designing it, it works even without a case on it. Thanks!
