Phone died when really cold - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Found an odd issue. The phone just completely died on me today twice when I walked to and from work. It was like there was no power whatsoever. Couldn't turn it on. Now this never happened before and I'm wondering if it was because it was really cold today or something. (-48C at one point) Once I got indoors and the phone warmed up for about 5 minutes it powered on no problem. Once it powered on this afternoon I found the battery had dropped about 25% from when it was on, and it just stayed at that percentage for about two hours with an hour screen time.
This is first time this happened although it's never been this cold before. The CPU wasn't registering a temperature and the battery wasn't either while I was walking.
Back when I had a Galaxy nexus this never happened. Anyone else ever come across this?

Some info about the phone would help. are you using custom kernel / custom rom or stock? Jellybean or Kitkat?

Nexus 4 obviously consisting in nexus 4 forum.
Slimkat latest build. Stock ROM kernel.

Calgary, Canada. It's warmed up today though. Only -36. I'll see of it happens again. But good to know!

Happens to me all the time when I'm outside.. Battery gets destroyed by the cold.. One time I was just looking at the battery and it dropped from around 50% to around 10% in less than 30 minutes with little use.

How hot does your device gets?

I have been asking this in few threads lately and no one yet to answer. I installed system tuner to check the cpu temperatures and seems to be a little high compare to other devices that I owned. With regular use the temps seems to be around 45-50C and with heavy use and gaming it would go up to 60C. The device also feels a little warm around the camera area. I would appreciate if someone could check their temps. Thanks.

Those temperatures are very normal... The phone feels so hot because the back is glass.

Could you check the temps with system tuner by chance? Curious to know what are your readings. Thanks

Haven't measured, but mine gets SUPER hot sometimes. Usually when playing games, or like last night, I was on skype for ~4 hours. It get's hot, but I would expect it or any device to get hot when doing that type of stuff.

I don't own one but those temps are right in line with the average desktop pc. I think once temps hit about 65-70C under heavy load, then there is reason for concern.

Mine got up to something like 42 degrees C yesterday while browsing. Got the temperature readout using Cool Tool. Heat was mainly around the top / camera area where I assume the antenna is.
38° C max and that's when i m charging and using the phone.

42 is not hot. Its warm. To qualify as hit it has to reach at least 50.

Nexus 7 crazy battery drain

I've only used it for 8 minutes and the battery has gone down 3%. I'm on 4.2
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well, you still got 97% >_>'
Do you really think that the battery would drain intense after such a small drop? This isn't crazy.

That gives you 4.5 hrs of use until it gets to 0%. So depending on what you are doing maybe that's actually OK. Post back once it hits 0% with the actual screen on time.

I honestly think one of Google's competitors is funding some of these ad hominem attacks.

Referencing the Nexus 7 Guidebook, the claim is not 9 hours, but rather up to 8 hours of active use. As with any consumer electronics, that represents optimal conditions. Your screen brightness setting, what you, really doing, etc, are amongst the many variables that will affect battery drain. Having the screen on full bright is with white backgrounds is going to drain a battery exponentially faster than low brightness with darker images.

Something must be terribly wrong. I notice it gets warm slightly when playing around with custom kernels or gaming but not to the level where it is uncomfortable to hold. If you are on stock rom then you should contact google.
I think its because of the radio.. Hot when it isn't on airplane mode. Fine when its off

That kind of heat is an issue. RMA that pronto.
Download system tuner and see what the temperature is when its " too hot"
Mine gots rrally hot when running Angry Birds Star Wars. What about you guys?
I've had two N4's and neither one ever even got warm. At least not noticeable in hand. Even with extended gaming. Agree on the RMA.

Last 15% of battery is non existent

Anyone have this issue? I ill get the 15%warning and within minutes I'm down to 1% and it shuts off. my battery life is good otherwise but it's like 15%is more like 2% with how fast it shuts off then.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
probably calibration issues.
give it a few days to gater a better voltage profile
The battery flat out lies, it drifts further from reality if you don't reboot at all during a drain cycle.
So your N4 is "normal" as far as N4's go.
Ya kinda what I figured but my s2 wasn't like that so it seemed weird

Hope it's an OS bug that can be fixed with a patch or the next Google images (when/if they come). I'm holding out hope for that to be the case rather than another build quality issue :fingers-crossed:
Battery stat on nexus 4 is simply terrible. Galaxy Nexus that I had with android 4.2 is much better. Dunno if it's a software issue or hardware issue since galaxy nexus with sane OS seems to be fine.

Nexus 4 running hot

Hey guys i have a little problem here, i flashed a few roms over the months and now i flash pacman then my phone starts to run hot then later the same day i flash aokp and it still runs hot.
I don't even have to be doing anything heavy very litght stuff like listening to music or even having the screen on will make my phone run up to 40c or 105f, this has never happened in the past because in the past my phone mostly ran below 31c.

thats not hot. human body temp is 37C, 98.6F. is it warmer around you now then it was before?
It may be caused by the weather. Summer is coming if you live in the northern hemisphere.
I have only experienced the Nexus getting extremely hot when playing certain games that try to establish a constant connection to facebook.
Other than that no heat issues.

I live in Illinois not to far from Chicago and it just hit 90 degrees F a few days ago so its a possibility. But still on these cool nights it gets hot just this morning my phone was at 26c and after sending this message its already past 32c.
Another question is what temps are yall getting after light use with your phones?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
If I browse on websites for too long on my N4, it gets hot in the upper left corner of the phone. I'm in Canada and it's not exactly hot here.
In in the UK. Sat outside with light usage and running at 28°C.
Indoors is normal for me to see 32-40° with screen on.
Unless gaming I wouldnt be concerned with battery temps below 45°
