Android 4.3 Android OS draining too much battery - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
So I have the same problem as other, apparently Android OS is consuming a lot of battery. Before my upgrade I could easily have my phone last an entire day, now around 4pm I need to charge it again as it is already around 20% with very log usage. If I fully charge it and leave it unplugged overnight, it will go from 100% to 75%. I have seen other thread with similar issues but those are usually are related to having some app keep the phone awake. In my case this happen even after a factory reset with no apps installed.
My GPS and all location services are off too.
Any ideas? We should get to the bottom of this!

For some reason WIFI is on 100% of the time, despite the fact that it is set to go to sleep when the screen is off. Also the phone is "awake" 99.4% of the time, that is very concerning and there must be something that is keeping the phone awake all that time.

Hi.
U might want to go to Google play store and select "do not auto updates".
Another thing to check is; got to Settings/MyDevice/Accessibility and unchecked Notification Reminder.
Next is; go to Google Settings app, open Android Device Manager and uncheck "Remotely report this device".
Reboot after making these changes and check BBS app after 4 hours.
Hope that these could bring down the high Android OS and phone awake.
Cheers.

I have applied the changes you suggested and I will report what I find. Thank you!

I did what you recommended and I even disabled push notifications from samsung marketplace and it did help but only a little. Now wifi is active only 85% of the time and the phone is awake 80% of the time. It is a small improvement but there is still something wrong as this metrics were recorded over a period of 8 hours while I was sleeping, I would expect that the awake time and the WIF should be at their minimum . I am currently using the latest official firmware, I wonder if Samsung will release some update soon.

How did you upgrade to 4.3? Ota, kies, Odin? What version of Odin? What model you have, i9500 or i9505?
Your problem seems that it doesn't enter to deep sleep processor state correctly.

I upgraded using Odin version 3.0.7. I have the model i9500. I had root so I could not do OTA.

Ok, that version is correct due your i9500 model (you could use also 3.09). Now, you said you are root. With cfautoroot? What Odin version did you use for making root?

I used CF-auto-root also with Odin 3.07. The bundled zip contained Odin3 1.85 but I did not use that one in favor of the most recent version.

Bad decision. Chainfire (the cfautorroot author) includes that version inside the zip even being a file for our s4 because a reason, and he explained in his web...
Ok, do this: flash again using Odin 3.07 or 3.09 your complete stock 4.3 Rom without making wipe data (you won't lose your data, but if you don't mind to lose them, then ok, wipe data). Then try again with no root yet if you can see with better battery starts that you enter well in deep sleep.
Once you check this make root flashing cfautoroot using Odin 1.85 and check again deep sleep.

OK I will try that. But I have had this problem even before having root in Android 4.3. Before I flashed 4.3 everything was fine, I even used the correct Odin to get root and everything had been working fine for months. When I flashed 4.3 I was back to full stock without root and I had the heavy battery drain. I just recently rooted my phone again using Odin3 so I could disable even more applications and remove some bloatware.
I really dont care about root, it was just my last resort.

The reason of a battery drain can be different when no rooted and rooted. I mean, when no rooted it is normal a high consumption because all no using apps and knox, but not because any problem in entering in deep sleep state. When you root incorrectly you can delete all these apps and knox, but if a problem with deep sleep happen, it will drain because a different reason... I don't know of I explained well, sorry for my English...

It has the same symptoms as before. I really dont think it is at the level of the CPU not entering the deep sleep state. I think it may be more related to some service requiring network connection constantly. That would explain why the Wifi is so active, wich would explain why the Wifi remains on, which would explain why the CPU does not go into a deep sleep state. I have noticed that if 3g and wifi are off, then the battery drain is normal. That is my theory but I have not been able to find anything else in particular.

Yes, without 3g and wifi there is almost no consumption. Also if 3g is poor, draining is very strong because it is constantly trying to connect and disconnected... when i am in a place with a poor coberture, i just switch off the data or put it in flight mode.
It is very difficult to diagnose a battery draining without correct screenshots...

The screenshots are the same as my first post. Should I post it again or could I just embed them here? Should I add more screenshots?
I will keep digging to see if I can find some service that is keeping the CPU awake and I will keep flashing more firmwares to see if the problem is solved with an update.

Security Message on 4.3 MJ7

Hi! Last week I flashed the Italian MJ7 4.3 FW and since then i reinstalled all the apps that I used to have. However since yesterday I'm getting this annoying alert every time I connect the phone to wifi or 3g. Seems like there's an app that tries to "access system" (??)
The funny thing is that if I tap on View Apps, it just takes me to the list of apps that I've installed but it doesn't tell me which app is causing this alert to pop up! Can someone help me?

So basically Samsung is working on a fix, and the only way to solve it right now is with a factory reset -.-

You do not need to worry. Everything is fine. Look for the label applications for Knox and follow the installation instructions. It is necessary to remember the password. Working in KNOX is outstanding but is protected against all unknown applications. data are unavailable for other people who do not know the password.

I'm getting the same thing myself. Only started happening last night. I un-installed Knox to see if that would solve the problem but still no luck. This is only happening when I connect to any WiFi network , mobile network is fine.
So I did a factory reset and at the beginning it continued to appear but from the 3rd time I connected to my WiFi it stopped popping out, don't know why... (??)

For me it doesn't pop up 2 days already. But one day it popped up like every 5 minutes. Maybe because I was on a public network at the UNI and these 2 days I am at home.
I found a little fix for this (read it on a website somewhere, couldn't remember which one): Go to Settings > More > Applications > All > Knox Notification Manager > Clear data. That's it. Haven't experienced a single pop-up yet.

No security messages from KNOX because he removed it in his rom.

The sleep wake is there when my Gear is not even connected or even when bluetooth is off.
Since 4.3 my battery life has been poor, going to 4.4 was even worse, on both upgrades wiped cache and data numerous times, installed apps one by one, still nothing.
Finally tried a battery recal, not rooted so purely a full run down to flat and then a fully charge (1 cycle) and its sorted.
Back to nearly 2 days with moderat use, versus barely 1 day.

Battery drain and deep sleep issues

Hello everybody,
I've updated from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 last week, and i had a lot of issues with the battery since then.
Each night, the phone battery drops from 100% to ~25%-30%
I tried clearing cache, no luck
I tried doing a factory reset, no luck
I did a full reflash, no luck
Whatever i try, the battery drain is still there.
No root and KnoX0x0
Is there anything i can try ?
If i can't fix this issue, i will probably replace the phone with another model, because this is really frustrating.
Thanks

Same for me! Supposed DOZE would work, but when I'm home from work around 17:00h I have only 30% battery left, with 1h of SOT! This is ridiculous!!

Ask it to Samsung. Maybe they would replace it with another buggy one.
Almost everyone has fixed deep sleep issue with root & custom kernels here
I have the same issue, the battery is drained about 30% or 35% per night...
Which custom rom (similar to stock) should fix the deep sleep bug?
Thanks.

OTA update doesn't have such issues.. G9287C just got 6.0.1 update 2 days ago and it worked well on my device.. The issues is just rolling text when there is a notification doesn't appear anymore and just shows the icon.
I tried with OTA and the issue is still there. I noticed that if I turn off 4g and Wi-Fi, the drain stops.

How much your battery drains when you do it? If I forget to turn off my wifi and cell signal, it will drain around 7-9% overnight.. I believe the phone will trying to maintain the stability of the signal and if we are in an area where the signal is unstable, then the phone will do more effort and it will take up the battery.
G928F with stock XEO ROM, stock kernel and rooted by TWRP 3.0 and SuperSU Beta. No Problem with deep sleep, everything fine.

Before that try flashing stock again and don't restore anything, do a fresh install. Something is wrong with your Installation, it never happened to me.
By the way, the ROM Aryamod rocks, installing it by using the right options, you get a TW rom with awesome performance.
Lollipop has got 2 Bugs.

2. Reading mode is gone???

1. I don't know why this happen to you, I only can assume you didn't update to lollipop the right way, Try again removing your battery for a minute before power on directly to download mode and pick "Bootloader update" option on Odin, maybe your modem isn't the last version. If isn't the last version, there's the reason for it.
2. Yes, it's true, Samsung forgot it on lollipop on I9506. Other variants, like i9505 and i9500 still has it on lollipop.
3. After upgrading to lollipop, you must let system stabilizes for a day, at least. Technically, I don't know why, but this is true. Kit Kat may be faster sometimes, but in general way it isn't. When I was with Deodexed DeHawk's version, I got 47k on Antutu, try achieving it on KitKat, You won't! Lollipop after stabilizing is smoother than KitKat.
If you want, go back to Kitkat, afterall it's your phone and you know what is best for you. I wouldn't do it.
After being a lot of time on stock lollipop I flashed AryaMod 8.3... and it's amazing compared to stock lollipop, has a lot of features and Mods included... even Reading Mode is there.
And imagine the performance, smooth, etc... see screenshot with Antutu's score... See Screen on time.
Sorry but my phone is in Portuguese language, but you'll understand.
Decide for yourself, the last call is yours. I'm only trying to show you the best choice, in my honest opinion of course.
BTW: AryaMod has a bug, google account settings crashes if you try to enter it directly by settings Menu, but you can enter it ands change or remove a google account from Gallery.

i flashed to phones of I9506 roundabout 30 Times. I know how to do. But every Lollipop has the same Wlan Bug. I'm not talking about wlan is broken. It's working. But after a deep sleep it won't connect to the router again. Tried different firmwares.
With lollipop Stock debloated i've got 56000 Scores in Antutu. Don't know how much it could be in Kit Kat???
Maybe I'll try AryMod. But I have tested Cyanogen, and some other ports. At the end there is still a bug...

I don't know why this happen to you, I only can assume you didn't update to lollipop the right way, Try again removing your battery for a minute before power on directly to download mode and pick "Bootloader update" option on Odin, maybe your modem isn't the last version. If isn't the last version, there's the reason for it.
i flashed to phones of I9506 roundabout 30 Times.

In Kitkat I scored about 42k, 44k.
The problem about WIFI, I never had it. BTW I have installed DOJ3 modem version. I really don't understand why you have that bug and I neve had it or never noticed.
For example, when I have the phone in my pocket, even after a couple of hours in deep sleep, the phone is always get Wifi. When I'm traveling by car it is always ringing because he connects automatically to FON Routers, and everytime it connects it gives a notification . (FON is a shared wifi network, in Portugal there's a lot of routers providing that network)
I never tried CM because I need, and I'm used to, TouchWiz features.

I'm setting it to "never"" when screen is off.

Yes, it's true, I set it to never because I needed it in that way... and works as it should.
Touchwiz features needed? ...Air-view it's a must have, air gesture, the samsung camera, there's no other camera with such quality/features
The way that the laucher works, folder organization... a lot of it

Yes, works good. and about battery drain, I don't notice a big consumption. The big problem about battery drain is... GAMING
When I don't want to catch WIFI network, I switch off. It works good.
The next days after installing AryaMod, I noticed that everytime I unlock the phone a tiny message appears saying "Connected to xxxx wifi network"... AryaMod comes with WIFI suspend set to always ...so I changed it to never, as I like.
If you want to flash AryaMod, follow the guide in OP
full wipe, clear Data, dalvik, system, cache
flash with TWRP (try with 2.8.7 version, because 3.0.2 has a bug, it shows the installation options in front of recovery scripts... maybe 2.8.7 hasn't that bug, I installed with 3.0.2 and it's hard to understand the options you are choosing) (when you see kernel choosing, choose custom kernel and Untick any reboot option)
Don't reboot, flash FireWork_Kernel-0.4.0-DARKLORD_S6_v3
Don't reboot again flash GT-I9506XXUDOJ2_NON-OC_v320_DeHAWK_Kernel.CWM-TWRP or GT-I9506XXUDOJ2_OC_v40x_DeHAWK_Kernel.CWM-TWRP (choose if you want Overclock or not) Don't try newer version, @same-xx is the expert in this scope and he says newer version could damage the phone.
Don't reboot again and flash Sensor-fix (or try without sensor-fix as I did... because I forgot and noticed that every sensor wasn't working looool)
And it's done... it's working, set everything again... and after it is working for a few hours it will be smother as butter.
And thank to Same-xx because he passed me some of his experience with this Rom.

zhank you very much.
1st im testing 5.01 fresh Stock Install.
If the bug still exists i will try arymod.
What are you thinking about:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...6-0-1-touchwiz-marshmallow-galaxy-s4-t3358700
I've tested it. It's working great. But after a couple of Hours the screen rotation sensor ain't working because of the kernel. Hope there will be a fix.

Before installing AryaMod I was almost flashing that one. But I can't afford to have a buggy phone, this is my daily phone and it must be running ok.
I'll give it a try when someone solve sensor bugs, only after it.
Yeah... I see what your looking... exactly the same I am... a better ROM... a think it's better to wait for someone to solve every bug. I'm a developer, but not in Android World.
Or you can try to fix it if you do, tell me how to solve

Now I'm testeng the Aryamod. It looks great for the first time.
I followed your instructions.
But what about the built in kernel? Why haven't you used it and taken the DeHawk Kernel?
Click to collapse
Because it is a port from Note3, so the kernel isn't for our device.
You can use Arter kernel, but I trust more in DeHawk's work.
And same-xx said it works better
The Kernel Optimazion File is offline.
Have you got it for me to download?
And Wifi doesn't work... I should flash Kiffer kernel and dehawk again. But i cant find kiffer kernel?
This is the first kernel https://www.dropbox.com/s/fjzas1zd3y8t67n/FireWork_Kernel-0.4.0-DARKLORD_S6_v3.zip?dl=0
And this is the second one https://www.dropbox.com/s/08bie2g8j...2_NON-OC_v320_DeHAWK_Kernel.CWM-TWRP.zip?dl=0
Flash one after another and only reboot in the end
Sorry but i am offline in the next hour

thank you very much. It has worked . the rom looks great for the first moment.

Whatsapp shows others I'm online untill I kill the app in task manager

Sometime after I upgraded my Axon 2017G to Android 7. People told me I was always online on whatsapp.
Even when I'm not using my phone it says i'm online, untill I kill the app in task manager.
Are there more people with this problem or does anyone know how to fix this?
The problem still exists after upgrading to Android 7.1.1
Will a factory reset be an option?

Unfortunately, no! Factory reset would not solve the issue.
Done that. Idk what's the problem with that particular app.

Thats why I wanted to downgrade to Android 6.0
And what's the problem with always being online?
Do you see this reflected on the battery performance?

I don't think it's such a big deal of a problem where you have to downgrade the Android version...
I have activated. I dont hide anything, people think that you intentionaly dont read/answer... Is a bad thing, not a dead/live, but a stupid error

Even with blue tick, it always youre online and some people might think youre intentionally not answering.
Its just very strange this happens after an update

Thats right, I havent noticed it till my girldfriend tell me...
Now I have to use it and slide to kill, I never clean apps...
What's wrong with answering when you can...regardless of your online status.
I Downgraded my phone from A2017GV1.2.0B02 to Android 6 B10, when this was finished, it started normally, but then returned to the Axon screen, vibrating ones in a while, stuck on that screen. Restarting ended in the same screen. After a factory reset, it booted normally, I was back with android 6, and everything was gone. After installing whatsapp, it still showed online untill killing it in task manager. So even this is not a solution. Clear cache partition didnt work either. I have logged in on someone elses phone, and there my whatsapp account worked fine, so its definitely the phone thats causing the problem.
