I was wondering is it possible for a phone to hard brick from recovery from possible virus? I rooted and installed rome on my and my girlfriends phone with no issues at all i update mine seems like daily lol " A problem i got" anyway.... I rooted and installed a rom on my friends Sprint s3 with cwm (not touch) and Wicked Rom (The Latest) using some method and Hard Bricked it but it was crazy cuz in recovery it would scroll up and down on its own and select by it self i installed stock rom and reboot well full wipe and such. What could cause cwm to act in such a way? The side rockers seem to be fine. The power as well.... Anyone have an idea?Do you think a virus could cause that? He watches a lot on net porn so i was wondering.

I can't really see a phone getting a "virus" in recovery. I'm thinking either he's using a recovery for a similar device, but not his, or there is data corruption.
as for it acting weird could also be failing hardware
Seems like the recovery is messed up. Go back to an older fully functioning recovery.

If for the sprint gs3 MOAR is an awesome ROM that is stable as heck and very customizable.
But strictly for stability I would go with the latest stock rooted ROM

Hey there, I have been flashing my HTC Desire HD for a long time with different ROMs. I found it kinda annoying to always check certain websites for new updates, manually download and flash them just to find out that half of the stuff was buggy.
Now I got the Nexus 4. I loved the idea of having fast OTA updates. But now I want to flash a new kernel.. which means I got to install a custom recovery. But then OTA will not work anymore.
So I wonder:
Should I stay with
CWM + Stock ROM + Custom Kernel (no OTA update but no problem with buggy custom ROMs)
CWM + Custom ROM + Custom Kernel
Everything stock
Cyanogenmod is nice but for me it doesn't have any big advantages over stock 4.2 ? So I really wonder what you guys would recommend? What are your reasons to do a "certain setup" ?
Thanks
You don't need a custom recovery to flash a kernel.
It can be flashed with fastboot leaving everything else stock.
You still wouldn't be able to install the OTA without flashing the stock kernel again though.
Oh crap.. so as soon as I change ANYTHING... no OTA updates anymore
Hmm... I guess I will stay with custom kernel + flashing stock ROM then :/ Is there any way to automatically check for updates tho?
Thanks

Yeah you will get the notification and it will try to install but it will fail and reboot if you aren't 100% stock.

+1, TWRP is great :highfive:
TWRP is the way to go!
But then I have another problem (well I already have it but..):
I would like to use ROMmanager.. after all it might be able to check for rom updates & flash them "automatically" (stock + custom?). I am not sure if it could also check for kernel updates?
Anyway, it seems to work only with CWM ? Altough it doesn't seem the already installed CWM on my Nexus 4 :S
Anyone?
I would never use ROM manager. Not a good program. Use a custom recovery, and if you want lots of customisation then I would recommend AOKP Rom as it is just as fast and stable as the stock ROM but with a whole host of customisation options.
Beauty of this phone is that you can go back to complete bone stock with no issues, I did, but missed all the customisation and put AOKP back on lol.
alright I uninstalled it. I just hoped for some "app" which could look for all kind of "custom" updates and install them automatically (kernerl,rom,...)
If you're interested in CM, I think delta CM will allow you download only the changes made to the project.
Also, why do people say to use TWRP instead of the more tried and true CWM? It seems to have a lot of sex appeal to some recently, and there doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer. Is there added functionality?
Is there not a recovery for the Galaxy s4 yet on Sprint. I was able to root my phone on a mac but I was not able to get a recovery "cwm or twrp". If there is a way to get it on my phone via mac please let me know so i can reroot my pone.(unrooted because without recovery i could not flash a rom)

You should probably take a look around. It's a few touches away.

Have you tried installing one using your phone?
There is custom recoveries available. go to the Android Development forum and go to Shabbypenguins OUHDS recovery thread, and it provides excellent instructions on installing the recovery and then on installing root on it. Then your ready to go to flash roms. Right now Unknownforce's Force Rom is the only TW rom, and Slim bean is the only AOSP rom in beta - though alpha builds for CM, PA, and AOKP are currently being worked on by a great dev and should be up and running soon enough!
EDIT: CM is actually in Beta as well at the moment!
And personally I have never had a mac, nor nothing anything about the limitations of using a mac using these methods, so you should definitely look into it if it is different at all.

If you want a recovery without a computer. Download Goo manager from the play store. This will give you twrp recovery.

TWRP has a few issues with it still that they are trying to work out. Primarily some touch sensitivity problems. I recommend going with OUDHS until they get worked out.
I will also be switching to TWRP as well once it's quirk free!

thanks all for the information. i was hoping cwm or twrp were stable and good to go but i will try these out until i can get a stable one. hopefully more s5 roms will be coming soon.

Hey guys I just got this G2 today for 240 off craigslist. I currently have a note 3 as a daily driver and wanted to experiment with this thing. I'm really into rooting and the note 3 development is slow at best. So i have the phone and i started poking around and learn that i'm already rooted .. There is a custom recovery installed i think it said phils somethign recovery.... it's rooted and all that.. i dont know what to do. .I made a back up... do I need to do anything else? Is the bootloader installed? I'm lost. But i'm really excited to get an AOKP rom or something .. Where do I go from here?

Probably Philz Touch 6? What is it running stock? Kitkat or JellyBean?
I had the exact same thing as you (bought it off a similar website) and mine had JellyBean,
so I flashed a stock Kitkat Rom onto it but kept the root. Loving it so far
Well Well have Pacman installed. Have been having issues. Not Not sure why. Is there anything more stable.

First time Android user. I jailbroke several iphones in the past but just learning about rooting. I just did the towelroot, now what????
What is cyanogenmod? Do I need it?
Thanks for everyone who helps out!
Download rom manager from play store and use it to flash a custom recovery.. It should be simple
After that you can flash cyanogenmod which is a ROM that changes your phones interface to almost stock android with some added features

As far as I know the ATT S5 has a locked boot loader and hence cannot use custom recoveries or ROMs. For now you are stuck with the ROM you have. You are able to modify your ROM now though.

Two things you should consider..
First of all, if you install a custom kernel/recovery, it will void your warranty (this is called as tripping the KNOX flag). Currently, this is something that you cannot fix by yourself and if your phone breaks Samsung may or may not fix it. But that doesn't actually matter since your phone is on ATT and that one is bootloader locked anyway (which means that currently you cannot flash that recovery anyway).
Second thing is that currently CM11 is pretty broken and some features like GPS and Camera aren't working. It will take some time before people manage to iron out all the bugs and even then it might not be perfect.
My advice is that you should first try to get familiar with the phone and then start thinking about modifying it since you aren't used to Android phones. While rooting might give you some functionality you normally wouldn't have, it's not really something that you'll absolutely need. Even out of the box Android is still way more capable and customizable than iOS and most of that stuff doesn't need rooting.
Maybe im missing something but they have a custom ROM for Cricket and not for MetroPCS? Whats up with that? Is there one for Metro Or T-mobile? I have a unlocked Rooted SM-G530T1 With TWRP And No custom ROM Anyware I look. is there perhaps a cyanogenmod build that would work with the T-Mobile/MetroPCS Variant? That would be super cool. Anyone?

I have one built for G530T T-Mobile but.. I have not finished adding somethings to it yet. It's TW based and deodexed so you can install Xposed. The thing that is holding me back is not being able to restore backups when testing builds, as well as TWRP not being able to flash large zips since we don't have an official TWRP specifically for our device.

first off thank you for your work because without developers such as yourself we would have nothing and i mean nothing so thanks man. ok so it is so weird because i had previously ran a TWRP for a different variant that i thought worked great until i went to use the backups that i made.... it would only save the system and not even the whole system like 30% or less. i lost a lot of stuff but now im thinking there might be a connection within the grand prime.... its just very odd that you are having a very rare but simalar issue dont you think? come to think of it i couldnt flash large zips either!! man there is something to this because itwould let me flash superSU but if it was any bigger it would fail me out. i still have the TWRP if you want to look at it if it helps but im not a DEV but i do see clues here and there if something is not right. just let me know and thanks for getting back to me.
Hey I have never been a tester before it would be a good experience for me and since i have bricked this phone several times already and brought it back no problem it seems I have enough knowledge to do the job do you need a tester?

One thing you all will find is that the factory ROM with xposed installed is just about better then any custom ROM for any model phone in my experience because it more stable than custom roms. I think custom roms are over rated. I've bricked enough phones to understand this first hand.

you know i was just looking into that yesterday and i have to agree with you because although Cyanogen and the others are great and user friendly, (no disrespect because i have builds 10, 11, and 12 running on various devices as we speak) but they just dont give you the freedom i saw when i got lost in the exposed repository last night HAAHA! i couldn't believe that i was seeing the stuff i was seeing! You know when someone says " why are you getting apps and programs to hide your activities, i dont care if some corporation wants to look, i have nothing to hide". i just smile and then make an agry face and say " Listen to me clearly, it is not about having anything to hide, far from it, it is about me having things like the Right to Privacy and Freedom of Speech and so on" and a lil thing called the BILL OF RIGHTS EVER HEARD OF IT?... ..... you get the point. i dont think we need me getting into some political rant... but it just got me thinking as i looked at all those add ons in the repository, "why am i so excited about this? This should be in every phone right?" WRONG... Wrong because it has already started a little chip at a time just like it always does throughout history, our rights are disappearing make no mistake and until one day we will wake up and have no rights left! Maybe a Bar code on the back of our necks or some Johnny Mnemonic type crap! Remember that movie?... but seriously people need to wake up! oh and can you explain to me how to get exposed on my phone i think im doing it wrong or something... sorry bout the rant im a litte crazy when i want to be Haha!
