CWM recovery

Ok so I got my AT&T S4 successfully rooted using the guide I found on here that uses the Motochopper tool. Root Checker verified I am indeed rooted. But that's it. I'm only rooted to the stock ROM. Nothing custom. Now how to I go about getting a CWM recovery thing on my phone, while still maintaining the stock ROM?

On the play store, download goo manager (for twrp) or rom manager (for cwm) to install a custom recovery. Don't use either app to do anything but just install the recovery. Once it's installed, boot into recovery and make a backup, even if you're planning on staying stock. Cheers

Step 3. Do it.

I need more basic. I mean I know CWM means ClockWorkMod, but I don't know what that means. I also know that CWM is more popular than TWRP (I don't know what TWRP stands for) because the rom manager app has tons more downloads in the play store than the goo one does. What is a recovery mode and why do you need one? I mean if I screw up I can just use Odin to flash the AT&T stock ROM back. I wish someone would post a link to a ROMS for Dummies page.

If I were you I'd be happy that your rooted and now find out what that means to you and what you want to do with a rooted phone. You don't need a custom recovery if all you're interested in is being rooted. And if you mess up, Odin back to stock may not be an option. You may permanently hard brick your phone. So really decide what you want to do with the phone before you proceed any further.

These guys are correct and trying to help you avoid a brick. If you are not aware of the basics start reading. Even if you are experienced at flashing on another device.
I had extensive experience on HTC phones and feel like a noob here, but getting better. But I have read over a thousand posts, at least, and dozens of how to videos since early may. And only feel comfortable now to flash a custom rom. Not ready yet as phone stock is pretty good for me atm. And would prefer an unlocked bootloader first. I only rooted and flashed a recovery about a week ago. May be a little slower than some, but never got into a problem I couldn't get out of on my HTC phones using the same learning process.
If you come back with specific questions where they know you have researched things they will gladly help. Googling some of the terminology is a good idea too. Had to do that when I first started flashing roms. A different language for sure.
Good luck and enjoy the phone and the rooted world.

In my experience with the S4 CWM does not work as well as TWRP. I had many issues installing a few custom ROMS with CWM, but as soon as i loaded TWRP those ROMS which wouldn't install would install properly. TWRP also was able to read my ext SD when it was formatted in exFat.

About twrp manager...

Hello everyone. I recently got a nexus 7 and i rooted it and unlocked the bootloader,but i didn't install a custom recovery yet. Can someone tell me how to install it without a PC? I downoaded TWRP manager from google play and i see that it has options to install stuff from it. But i would like to install CWM from it. Is it possible to do that. I have android 4.2.2 btw... thanks in advance.

Twrp and cwm are completely separate recoveries. Just download an image of cwm from the original software sub section, then download flash image gui from the play store. Then, flash cwm. All done. That is the easiest way to do it without using fastboot.

Why? Rom manager works fine for installing cwm and goo manager works fine for installing TWRP.
Dont really see a need for a completely different app that will handle that process. Dont even have to manually download anything

I usually go with flash image gui because no matter which recovery, or even which specialized version of a recovery (multirom modified twrp, landscape twrp.....) you have the tool right there handy to quickly flash it on the fly without need of fastboot and a pc. If they never intend to use anything other than the basic custom recovery, i guess the other options are fine. But honestly, flash image gui covers all bases, and makes future modification,should you choose, that much easier.
At its worst, if they do get a little more advanced and want to flash specialized in the future, maybe we avoid another "how to flash image?" post in the q&a section, because thay have already become familiar with the tool to use.

Yes
Note that you want to keep your device as close to stock as possible if you want to install the OTAs. Rooting is no issue but you will encounter errors if you flash custom radios for example.

Yes, and no if you're like me, I flash custom kernel, digs out nearly 50% of the system app replacing them with something to greenify them.

Not sure if this is your first android phone but its generally the same with all of them. If you root and alter files that the update checks for it will not update. Although there is not a big deal to update then flash the updated rom. Not sure why so many people worry about updates when a custom rom update will show up.
You also can get an app call otarootkeeper and lastly google is full of methods to achieve your goal its always good to google prior to posting a question... Never know what you may find

OTA RootKeeper no longer works as of 4.3. The way to get root back now is by installing SuperSU through recovery.

Yea but flashing Su would mean installing a custom recovery. He is trying to stay stock

You can revert back to stock recovery by downloading the factory image and flashing recovery.img buried deep within it:
fastboot flash recovery C:/recovery.img
OTA RootKeeper has served its purpose, and had done so for a long time; however, it is currently no longer functional.

I agree with you but saying a person that wants stock normally is trying to do as little as possible to their phone. Flashing a recovery via fastboot may not be an option. If thats the case you can simply just flash the stock recovery via zipfile and use SuperSu and it has an uninstall root function

I did just that.. When I bought my phone it had 4.2.2. Flashed a custom recovery, then rooted it as well.. When 4.3 OTA was out, mine also downloaded it.. I unrooted my phone using the unroot option in SuperSu and flashed stock recovery back and installed OTA just like a layman would, and , well, 4.3..
Later I read in this forum that few ppl who had custom recovery also were able to update normally to 4.3 through OTA.. But I didn't do that , so I can't give my word on that.

Unroot after rom flash?

I'm interested in flashing the Google Play Edition Rom to my Galaxy S4 I9505.
The walk throughs seem simple enough.
I've noticed that you need to root your phone it install the roms. After install is it possible to Unroot your device once your running the GPE rom? As I know some apps such as banking apps don't run on rooted devices.

If you need to lock ur phone back I mean unroot
Just use triangle away app then flash the stock odin version of your phone with specific region.
And you can get it from sammobile

You don't necessarily have to run stock to run "unrooted", because even some custom ROMs come without superuser priviledges. If you're talking about a specific ROM that comes stock rooted (which most are), then you might be able to get by if you simply disallow root access to that specific program. Otherwise, there are apps like Hide My Root which are supposed to help you do what you're trying to accomplish. If I were you, I would set it up and try it out on the actual program(s) you're worried about. It would be a shame to stay on stock just because you weren't sure if it would work.

You can temporarily unroot your device using super user app itself.. check it out in settings

I've not got round to rooting or flashing the GPE rom yet might do it this week.
This is my 1st time doing this so a little uncertain on some little things.
I know about uprooting, getting TWRP running, using Odin, then flashing the ROM. but just read that the ROM needs a new modem file flashing. Can you do this through TWRP or as I'm thinking do it through Odin after I've got the ROM up and running?

***need help rooting***

What's up everyone, i'm new to the site and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me root my galaxy note 3. I've tried rooting in the past and failed terribly. I tried on a sprint gs3 and a verizon note 2, and i almost bricked both of them. So if someone with a lot of experience would help root my phone and install a custom rom, it would be greatly appreciated. As far as the type of rom, i could careless about appearance...i'm all about performance and battery life. So basically, i want a rom that "overclocks" my processor and removes bloatware and unnecessary apps. I'll take instructions on how to do it but i'd rather someone remotely control my pc [teamviewer] to help. I'll even paypal you like $5 for helping me. Thanks in advance!

I *would* help you, but I'm having issues rooting as well. I'm no where near new to it, been doing it since my HTC Fuze way back when. There are a couple of ways to root, Vroot, will pretty much root anything android and there is Kingo. I would give you links to both, but its not allowed, but you can do a quick google search and find them and info about them. If you're on the MJE build, I was successful with both methods, but I managed to cause a few issues when I was rooted with Kingo and had to Odin back to stock.

You need kingo 1.1.8 and safestrap. Both are one button operations. I rooted and had the safestrap installed and the modified twrp recovery in less than 3 minutes. Kingo 1.2 had a faulty script and causing errors.

I rooted with kingo, it said successful. now what do I do? I don't know what to do with safestrap and all that other stuff. all I really want now is a ROM that will make my phone faster

Obviously since the bootloader is locked down tight, if you want a custom rom, you need to use safestrap.
You need to download safestrap apk file from hashcode's website, open it, grant root permission, and install recovery.
Once you install recovery you can reboot to recovery right from the safestrap app, then create and activate rom-slot-1
Once active, you can flash/install your ROM.zip file (I would recommend Hyperdrive or Jelly Beans) and reboot...that's pretty much it in a nutshell, its relatively easy

I just tried to root with Kingo, it failed to root. I have a S3 SCH-I535. Where do I go from here to successfully root my phone? I used Kingo 1.2.0.1876. I could not find version 1.1.8.

Yo don't be hijacking my threads. Lol, jk. But if you google kingo and goto their website, you can hit their facebook page in the upper right corner. The facebook page has previous versions.

Thanks, finally got the download. All 1.1.8 links were leading to 1.2 download, had to use a mirror download to get 1.1.8.
Starting root now, hope it doesnt brick! Before I start...I guess I should ask, will rooting and going to a custom ROM fix my battery drain issues? Since the 4.3 update I get about 6 hours of battery life while not using my phone at except to turn the screen on for 10 sec to check the battery level.

If i had an answer to your question, i'd help you. But like i mentioned before, i'm new to the rooting process so you'll have to wait for an answer from these "experienced" fellas...

I honestly don't know what to tell you. I have a note 3 and 1.1.8 worked for me.

Are you sure it's 1.1.8? I tried many times and downloaded 1.2even thoughit said1.1.8 and finally found 1.1.8 from a user on xda. If you need I can upload the correct version. But as previously stated you can find the most up to date safe strap on the note 3 board. Install the app press install recovery and every time your phone boots it will ask continue or recovery. Make a backup of stock and restore to any slot you want If you want to do stock rooted or select any slot and flash any rom (make sure it's for the Verizon note 3 because with a locked bootloader you cannot flash kernels) I'm currently running neon rom and with moderate usage I'm getting almost 3 days on a single charge. I find wifi downloading I can destroy 40 percent battery in about 2 hours though. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Most Likely downloaded the 1.2 version Like czach said.

You have to make sure you turn off antivirus. For me that meant turning off avg, Windows Defender and some other stuff I found it. Make sure you have developer options on USB debugging, screen stay on, and for some reason it seems like it helped to turn on unknown sources in your security settings on your phone. Sometimes it took me unplugging the USB and plugging it back in a few times in order for it to work but I just did it myself last week and making sure I did those things allowed me to do this pretty easily and reliably
