Something interesting with my Macbook Air and HDX - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

Err, I don't know if I'm the only one with this, but if I use my Kindle Fire HDX to touch my Macbook Air's left edge, my computer will sleep at once. Anyone tried this?

There is a magnetic sleep sensor on the macbook pro. The kindle happens to have magnets too.

So what's with all the reports about broken charging ports?

All over Amazon.com's forums, I've been reading about how the Kindle Fire HD somehow has a "loose" charging port and won't hold a charge. I know Amazon uses micro-USB like every other manufacturer, but what makes the Kindle's so prone to defects?
It's making me really reconsider buying a Kindle device. I thought Amazon had better quality control.

tendoboy1984,
Many of the devices use a Mini USB socket that will fail under strenuous conditions, probably the worst is the Nexus 10. The Kindle Fire HD is a solid tablet with a solid future. If you are looking for a Multi-media tablet, look no further - the Kindle Fire HD performs. If you are looking for a development platform lean to the Nexus 7.
If you Google:
amazon kindle fire hd failing charging port
There is not an excessive number of complaints, so I would just say this is a trend - maybe they had a bunch fail, just like every other manufacture defect. If you buy a Nexus 7, at some point there is going to be a higher number of failures due to some mistake in the Manufacturing.
We remember when the Nexus 10 was first released, Samsung made a manufacturing mistake on the rear of the tablet, they forgot to glue the back so when you depressed the back the Tablet would make a nasty pop noise. They have fixed this defect but our point remains, whether you are looking at a $200 Tablet or a $600 tablet, they are all prone to some sort of issues - just our experience.
Finally, if you take care of the Tablet, do not abuse it, you will get a very long life out of the Kindle Fire HD 7". We love the tablet.................

really the kindle is the best cheap tablet ever made! good sound, good screen, 1 g ram, 4400 mah battery a front cam (why a back cam, i m not going to take photos with a tablet xD) so its good, the materials they use are exellent, if your tablet fall it can have some damage, drop a nexus 7 and see the difference

when a custom rom andd kernel are release, i will make my tweaks compatibles and i will add the audio tweaks from acid audio, so we are having one of the best tablets of all
The KFHD in my view has a premium build quality, it feels really solid, it was one of the factors I chose it over the Nexus 7, I use it daily & love it but as with most tech, things do after a while fail sometimes, but many just blow it out of proportion though, I have no issues here.
Sure since it is a small connector & port it feels like it could break but I suspect most tablets/devices that use them are all in the same boat.

Gilly10,
We completely agree with you, the Kindle Fire HD and 2 are all solid tablets top-of-the-class products.
I think part of the issue here is that the charging port is on the bottom in landscape mode. That means if you're trying to charge while using the tablet, the port is going to get banged around more than it should. I really wish they had put the power on one of the short ends.

Geekybiker,
I hear you but we have a Nexus 10 that has the port on the Left Side of the tablet. This is a pain, I have to hold the tablet upside down if the battery is dying, otherwise the cable will not reach the 110v socket if I live it right side up. Now you may say, the tablet flips so what is the big deal? When you use the tablet upside down the Volume controls are reversed - I know, so what? It can be a real pain once you get used to the Kindle bottom port and correct facing volume controls.
After using the Nexus 10 for over 2 months now, our preference is the port at the bottom. Just our 10 cents.

Micro USB port
I repair A LOT of these! The 1st Generation of Kindle Fire (D01400) had a huge problem with the charging port b/c the port was unbalanced on the Main Board and normal usage eventually cause the solder points to break free from the MB. When I repair them I use an epoxy that gets rock hard to lock the port to the board.
The Kindle Fire HD has a much better designed Micro USB port. It is attached with 4 'legs' that go through the board and are then filled with solder as opposed to the 2 'legs' on the 1st gens. If your port is failing on a Fire HD model then its most likely because it has been used too much while it is plugged in and the 'tongue' inside the port is worn down or damaged.
Replacing the ports is one of the more difficult circuit board solder repairs b/c there are five tiny leads in a tight spot that need a steady experienced hand to get the solder on correctly.
So yes the first generations were faulty but the HD models are all good as long as you use them correctly. I strongly recommend not using any Micro USB device while its plugged in b/c that is where most of the damage comes from.

Good read. You may request to have this move to the Kindle Fire area as this is the KFHD area. I would but I'm on a tablet.

How hard is it to actually get to the loose usb charging port?
I have a 1st gen and its loose - have to play around and rig cords to be in odd positions to hold a charge. I have some circuit repair skill, but havent seen much in the way of how to crack these open or what has to be removed to access enough area to solder.

Swap screen 10' to 7' (Ainol Hero)

Hey guys! I have my old Ainol Novo 10 Hero (first model). It works perfect, but the screen is cracked. I do not need 10' tablet now, but i need it's hardware for embedding into the mirror (this will be the smart house). By the project the screen size is 7', so i think: why not to replace the 10' display with 7'?
The Ainol Novo 10 Hero was build at the same hardware as the Ainol Novo 7 Fire. Their motherboards are equal and the screens cables looks the same.
Has anybody tried to do something like this, or have somebody idea why it will not work? I do not have Ainol Novo 7 Fire to test this.

Alternative stylus

Hi,
from images and videos about this device on web I have noticed that included stylus does not have any buttons, which is a bit disappointing for me as I am used to use stylus with as least 1 button (preferably 2 thou). Since the Yoga Book has wacom digitizer, could I use a stylus from my Intuos tablet? Or some other stylus with buttons?
Thanks
I was able to use the stylus of my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the button worked as well

Thanks for the info.
Not the thing I was hoping. I have Galaxy Note as well and those small styluses are just not for me.
Search for Bamboo Wacom stylus. I've got one that works with both my Galaxy Note 8 and the Yoga Book. I believe any Wacom stylus should work with the Yoga Book.
yes i think so, the technic is from wacom
i test one from my old windows convertible on the lenovo also the eraser works and the button
Hello,
i have test the stylus from my Windows "Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260", it didnĀ“t work
Hey,
thanks all for the comments. The stylus from Samsung Note series indeed works (Galaxy Note 10 2014 in my case) and quite well actually. Just for funsies I have ordered few cheap "replacement" styluses from china, will let you guys know how it turns out.
I have also tried stylus from my Intuos tablet which unfortunately did not worked at all - the bamboo stylus seams to be the way for Wacom styluses.

Hi
I have had the Yoga Book for 3 days and loving it. I have found that the pen from the Thinkpad Tablet 10 works fine, its much smaller and has a button. The button didn't appear to do much in my first quick test. However, if that pen works maybe the Samsung pens do too.
How about the galaxy note pen version which has also a headset function (S pen). Will it work?
Has anyone tried the Surface Stylus with one key and an eraser on top? I think that would be great if it's working with our yoga book!
I received this S Pen clone yesterday: http://www.ebay.de/itm/131721242167
It works, but triggers to early, so I have many ghost lines on my notes. It's not very usable. Maybe an original product will work better - but I'm not sure.
i tried cube i7 stylus(skylake)'s pen today. it works without pressure sensor so... meaningless. however backside button works as eraser. side button doesn't works. i owned android yogabook.

Hey,
me again. So the styluses from china just arrived - it took way longed than usually does thou . So I bought these two: http://www.dx.com/p/capacitive-scre...samsung-note-3-black-2pcs-412089#.WHOxTy_Qckk
To my surprise they work quite well including the button! Only on pad thou, you can not use them with screen (same as original note stylus). Also, the tip has a bit more resistance than original note stylus when pressed, which I like very much. There are like only 2 levels of pressure sensitivity so it is not for artists but for notes it just fine.
I picked up a Wacom Bamboo Smart Stylus and it works. But... there are some weird distorted spots where the point doesn't quite track right. There are about 5 scattered about the screen some of them are about 2 inches in from the edge of the screen. While it works, the distortions were enough to bring me back to the buttonless (ugh!) OEM stylus.
The original Surface Pro (gen 1) stylus works perfectly with the Android version of the Yoga Book.
You can get one here:
OEM Microsoft Surface Pro / Surface Pro 2 Bluetooth Wireless Stylus Pen

My main reason is to have a backup. I've read that the tip of the Yoga Book stylus insert is prone to breaking off when switching to an ink tip.
I would love to get a alternative Stylus with Gel or a little bit something softer. But thats not so important.
I'm a little bit worried, that there are no Stylus Tips (plastic) for the Real Pen are available. You get normally one with Pens from Microsoft
or Samsung. So I have to buy then a new Stylus?
Which Stylus is definitly and without any restrictions working?
Worst case, use a drained ball point tip. Should work fine. How fast do these Wacom tips tend to wear down?

Hi, interested in what the s-pen button does functionally bring, both under windows and under android.
Thanks

Pen input inconsistent

I have been using the SM-P580 primarily for note taking with the s-pen. In the past I have had good results with various apps, including Quill and Write (and Write Beta). I am using both the stock (but rooted) as well as the lite version of japinder's ROM.
Frequently, the pen touches simply do not register. I have confirmed that the S Pen power saver is not on. It seems to be that touches have something to do with palm rejection, as the non-registered pen touches usually occur when my hand is wresting on the screen.
i don't have these issues when I use the same apps on my Samsung Note 5, so expect it has something to do with my hardware or the driver software.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?
I've mainly been using the Wacom Bamboo pen. Had no problem with palm rejection or unregistered touches. Highly recommend it http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/stylus/bamboo-smart-for-samsung-galaxy-note
Also, just on case it is this simple, make sure that any magnets in a case are not getting too close to the unit (folded around the back for instance) as they will stop the pen working around where the magnet is.

Bluetooth Keyboard and Case

I currently have the Feitenn keyboard for Tab S6:
https://www.amazon.com/Keyboard-Touchpad-Detachable-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B07X3D5H4R
With the bigger S7+, it's time to have a nicer keyboard, and since I vastly prefer a trackpoint to touchpad, I ordered this:
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/access...KBD-BO-TrackPoint-KBD-US-English/p/4Y40X49493
The keyboard is actually slightly wider than the tablet, but with the Infiland case it should work out nicely:
https://www.amazon.com/INFILAND-Multiple-Compatible-Samsung-12-4-inch/dp/B08F2BJHFH
Now I just need to find a neoprene case that can hold both the tablet and the keyboard.
One of the big reasons I just went with the Samsung keyboard case is the back of the case also keeps the pen tucked away making it harder to lose.
Tab s7 Plus
I ordered the Tab S7 plus. I am trading in the Tab S6. The case I have for the Tab S6:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XCT19YK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has a flip up part to cover the s-pen, and that is magnetically held in place. It even has an elastic strap for additional support holding the cover closed. I had a bad experience once with a magnetic cover, and don't totally trust them. I am hoping they come out with one for the Tab S7 plus.
Until they come out with that, I ordered this one:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08CB6YQGP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has a keyboard, but I didn't order it for that. I ordered it for the case. Has a flap that goes over the s-pen to protect it when charging, (like the one someone listed above) and also has an extra holder for the s-pen when I have it open and am not using the s-pen.
Case update.
So after getting my tablet and case I have to say that the case is pretty heavy and on the bulky side. I am still looking.
Mine arrived yesterday. The tablet weighs about 5oz more than the Tab S6. The material on the Infiland case feels good and the folding flap that folds over the top and covers the pin is nice. Though, the whole setup is heavier. With the Infiland case it weights 2lb-5.4oz. The S6 with the same case weighs 1lb-10.5oz. My wife got her S7 Plus and has the Samsung keyboard case and it weighs 2lb-5.6oz. Her Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen4 is 2lb-10oz. So the tablet with the Samsung case is pretty heavy and approaches laptop weight.
The Thinkpad Trackpoint II Keyboard yesterday. Amazing. I'm so much more productive with it. Just had to change the Default App Assistant to None from Google. The scrolling would activate the Assistant for some reason. In Dex all three mouse buttons work correctly as well. My S7+ is rooted, and I'm running Linux with a full XFCE Window Manager and XSDL. This tablet along with this keyboard is awesome.
I got the Feitenn keyboard case. Its good enough tbh. I wasn't ready to drop $300 for something I barely use seeing as already dropped near $1100 for the tablet. $56 is more than fair.:good:

The Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard II was $85.00. Far cheaper than the Samsung keyboard and much better for what I do.

I'm using the Linux Deploy app. I started a very base Debian install than modified the apt sources and switched to Devuan (Debian without systemd). Linux Deploy took care of everything getting XDSL to work. Running XFCE4 for my Window Manager. I don't have sound working yet and it's on my to do list but just have not needed it.
This case has worked well for me. The keyboard is ok but it works for what I need it for. This was the best alternative I could find to the Samsung keyboard plus it's backlit!
