Hi guys, i found this very interesting post in a forum about the camera on our Z1, i may say, this guy cover every single aspect of the amateur-professional aspects of Photography and how to use it on our cameras, the bad thing is that is in Chinesse but google translator help a lot here
here's the link: http://translate.google.co.ve/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&prev=_t&hl=es&ie=UTF-8&u=http://bbs.gfan.com/android-6782382-1-1.html
some examples that what our cameras can do:

If anyone knows chinesse and can tranlaste this table, would be more awesome!!
Cool!
Interesting photos! I knew that these options were going to make the photos better!
Gotta try them out all!
Thank you! proves that most complains come from nerds who believe that an awesome camera is the guaranty for good pictures. A messed up living room under low light condition doesn't look better with a professional SLR Camera. Why should a smartphone do the cleaning job? Nice view-found pictures.

Sorry dude, you couldn't be more wrong, pro SLR infact almost all SLR's will always look better, replace your comment (professional SLR Camera) with dedicated point and shoot cameras, then you got it spot on.

Great find, now I have a manual for the camera that Sony never provided me.
This was a very helpful post. Have not just learned how to use my phones camera better but also more on photography. Thanks

I can translate the table, but it really is just listing what features there are for which mode.
like for the superior auto, you can only set flash light, max resolution is 8mp, aspect ratio is 16:9 etc
manual let you set everything except at 20mp, you can't set scenery setting

You should try the three dots button on the left corner, which lets you set other setting, such as ISO

yup I will try:
拍攝模式 - camera mode
高級自動 - Superior auto
手動 - Manual
時光平移 - timeshift burst
圖片效果 - picture Effect
AR效果 - AR effect
全景掃描 - Sweep Panorama
自定義设定 - Manual
白平衡 -White Balance
(and I won't type out the chinese characters from here because I am really bad at it lol, from here on horizontally)
EV
Flash
Photo Pixel (not sure about this one, this is a direct translation, I am guessing it means that you can change the pixels in this mode if there is a tick)
Focus mode
ISO
Through the lens metering
Scenery mode selection
成像部分 - Resolution section
像素 = Pixel
next to it to the right:
Resolution size
Aspect ratio

Thanks for the links Archius.
Seems that the camera is ok for snaps (I have been spoiled by the Carl Zeiss optics of the Nokia N Series) but then I guess the camera is not what you would buy this phone for!

What camera settings did you use?
Great pictures, much better then my HD2 HD2 performs awful in the darkness - overexposes every picture with the leds. So I won't miss the led except for flashlight purposes
at least we can see under low light xD
the normal light picture is not bad, much better than HTC's quality and everything seems clear enough for a phone cam.
but it doesn't capture the sunlight that well, it makes a "whitish" effect in the picture lol not sure how to describe. but it ruins the real colors.
holy crap. in decent lighting those stills looks pretty darn good for a phone.
and the video is REALLY impressive for a phone.
it appears that it doesnt do well in low light, but still... im impressed.

Thank you so much!
Hmm, if the camera is similar to that on my Omnia I then I’d recommend manually setting the ISO rather than leaving it on auto. Also, I’d be curious if manually focusing on a specific object would perhaps result in a sharper low light photo (my Omnia has problems auto focusing in low light/low contrast situations).
If you want me to take some specific shots I can try. I've been messing around with the settings i.e macro, iso etc.
I took this today on the Galaxy S, I didnt check the settings, its still all on default. It was taken freestanding so could probably be sharper, but was pretty much just point and shoot. Its not edited apart from the 50% reduction to make it viewable on here. Colours are as they were captured, and not bad for a camera phone.

Could we please have some more samples of low-light photos and video?
Many thanks.

I've been playing around with the camera today and got a few interesting results. So I've created this thread so that we can post and share our pictures and settings used to achieve them. I feel this would be good for people who perhaps are not familiar with our cameras settings and would like to get better shots.
I think our SGS2s camera can achieve some fantastic results
Please post your favourite shot and the settings you used below

holy CRAP that's nice... i'll try to take some later =D
What resolution is that? the Max setting also?
My first macro shot with the SGSII, results were better than expected!
I believe everything was pretty much set to auto, except focus.
I should have some more lying around.
Nice shot
Whenever I point the phone to my dog, he thinks it's something like a gun so he runs away.
Can you tell me what's diffirent between metering : spot, matrix...?
Here in Spain it's ice-cream time
I always shoot in min ISO, so ISO 100. Both in macro mode.
Another macro shot (also ISO 100):
wow! amazing shots!!! very sharp and nice DOF
OMG wow.... Ok i will post some soon.

There is centre-weighted, Spot and matrix metering.
These options take readings from the image which adjusts exposure to the image being produced according to the light intensities.
Centre- weighed towards the centre and averaged throughout the rest of the scene
Spot- the camera will only measure a very small area of the centre spot, useful when there is a relatively small object within your scene which you need to be perfectly exposed.
Matrix - takes reading from split areas of the scene to calculate the best exposure and sets it according to an average.
...I think
It's all a bit complicated to be honest, well for me it is, I'm just a beginner.

matrix mode does not take "split areas" (it might just be a language issue however), it splits the images into a matrix (a table if you prefer) and finds out the best exposure for each point in the matrix.
this usually fixes up expose problems and while i didnt test the matrix implementation of the sgs2 im surprised it doesn't default to it, in theory, it should make all those overexposed pics ppl take on smartphones look "mostly" fine
centered will not, and you always notice it when the lighting is not correct, with the burned out / over exposed edges
Lots of nice cars.
Centre weighted, ISO 40. Really happy with the camera.
Im interested in this thing: lock exposure after focusing. e.g. SE X10 and other sony ericssons are capable to lock exposure after phone camera focus on object. Then you can move phone to other position and fullpress to take picture...this is very good when dificult light conditions...THX for answer

to me (as a photographer, not a modder/hacker) it looks like they do no noise reduction. Which makes sense because this takes processing time (even with DSLR's). so probably thats why. I'd love to be able to turn off the dreaded noise reduction/sharpening (actually all post processing) and do it afterwards in photoshop/lightroom if i care.
This difference is ridiculous. I just tested it out myself...bad Sony.
Lucky it shows the sensor has potential though!

That is really good question! Maybe the sun is different in Japan, or they calibrated the sensor on their secret Moonbase! jk...
Either they created the noise reduction in a labor only with artificial light, or they ported the noise reduction from previous sensors to the Exmor-RS sensor (Xperia Z is the first phone to use the new sensor, right?)

Amazing. Hopefully Sony take a look and update the normal mode to look like this.
Contact Sony
Go to your local Sony site (uk,usa etc) find the contact section and choose phone and type in the issue, lets see if we can get Sony to fix this
i used burst mid.
This is an awesome find. Finally everyone will see that there is in fact something wrong with the software and that it needs to be fixed.
SONY ARE YOU READING THIS???
It would be amazing if someone could do a comparison between these burst mode photos and other popular phones like the iPhone 5, GS3, Lumia 920 or Pureview 808. Considering how much sharper and better things look overall in burst mode, I'm very curious how this now stacks up against the competition.

Does the low light performance improve when setting the resolution to 8MP or lower?

Nope, low light performance is not affected by picture size. If you have a steady hand and set low shutter speed in manual camera (which is pretty easy, at least Sony did the easy part good ) you will get good pictures.
Some more pics
