i am running cyanogen mod 10.1.3 and i want to do a adb backup so i can then restore on a stock 4.4 factory image (cant do a recovery backup because i dont have enough space and i cant do a cloud backup because of my internet) but when i do an adb backup it just takes forever... i backed up the whole dayyesterday and then canceled it at the end of the day and only found out it transfered 4gb for the entire day. i tried 3 different computers so its nexus 7 that is causing problems. has anyone had this problem and does anyone have a solution or tips? please help me, i cannot delete anything because i cannot redownload
Make sure you are connected to a USB 2.0 port. I know when I did a full ADB backup of my 32GB Nexus 7, it took a few hours, but not the entire day.
Did you also try different cables? I use the one that came with my Nexus 7 and it works fine.
Also, remember that MTP mode is the only way to do this which is SLOWER than being able to access the SD card via straight USB mass storage connection.

When i try to mount my sd card to my laptop it just doesn't stay mounted. Right after i tap mount it dismounts. I had this issue on ALL 1.5 builds. When i connect to any other computer it works perfectly. Any ideas? i tried deleting the drivers and re-installing them several times that doesn't work. I think it maybe an error with my registry or maybe some software i have on here blocking it idk. This GeekSquad agent is officially confused
Registry? What is this nonsense? Are you registered as an offender and the court has mind control software installed on your computer? Best to wipe the thing clean and install Linux, then everything will work.
thats way to much of a hassle dont you think?
reinstaling the computer os to mount a phone? noo
there has to be a better way
but if ur meaning to do a fresh install of everything then formating and starting over will work
but whats prob the problem is that your drivers are conflicting with each other
i wish i could help but try to do a fresh wipe of your phone and see if u can install the drivers on your own...again
dumb question, but this isn't as well known as it probably should be. Does the laptop have usb 2.0 or usb 1.1/1.0? And if it has power saving options, see if it maybe toggles to the slower usb when that's on. I have an issue with usb 2.0 on my motherboard (something's corrupted/broken) and can't use windows with it active, so I can only use usb1.0...and the sd card starts to mount but then errors out.
Hope this helps, that's the only issue I've had and it's only happened on my home desktop, works fine on my wifes pc and my work pc.
the usb port only slows down when its not in use after a certain time
the bios is set up like that
but if ur usb is constantly slowing down you should either update your bios or update your system all together and change some advanced settings to keep the usb running all the time
I had the same issue after upgrading to 1.5 w/ apps2sd. I ended up having to upgrade the driver. Windows will tell you that your using the best driver but you will need the one that you would use for fastboot etc. BTW you can always just use your sd adapter and see if windows can read it that way and if it does your good to go. Also did you recently partition or format the card and how old is it?

Yea the sd card is perfect just bought a pny 8gb sd card $20 , but i have tried upgrading the driver to the fastboot drivers that doesn't help, i installed a clean version of windows on a separate HD and it works fine, so i know it's a software/driver issue on my end
btw all my usb ports are 2.0 guess I'll just use my sd card reader in the mean time hopefully new releases fixes this issue
I've tried everything I could think of:
Drop Box fails: file size limitations
Direct copy by attaching to a PC fails: IF you want to backup directories such as clockworkmod or something with lots of files, CRC's often do not match for copies
SFTP works: when permissions allow and its slow
Google Drive fails: speed and space available
SMB fails: As I have network firewall issues that block this.
SGS3 Easy UMS fails: Only external SD card
Directly mount SD card fails: Only works for external SD card.
ADB push/pull fails: only moves 1 directory, not valid for an entire set of directories, continually fails on permission issues.
I had a Atrix, which was great worked every time, plug it in mount the SD card's and go, now with a Galaxy SIII I've take I giant step backwards as far as moving data goes as there is no good fluid and stable way to backup the phone or just move data without pulling my hair out and rolling the dice. I'm sure there is some other method, but so far I've yet to find it, so hence any suggestions?
Also I'm not a fan of the new Clockworkmod plan, as it makes backing up the backups to external devices very time consuming and error prone (external backup to an SFTP server has taken 14 hours and is still running), the old single file method from 5.X, took more space but was simple to backup (and fast same backup would have been done in 20 minutes). Can you use the old method in 6.X, if so how?

I don't understand what you are trying to do. Are you just trying to transfer a large file to the phone' s internal memory? If so any of those methods you work without any problem
not sure what cwm vers your using but the cf root version allows for backups to be created on internal or external storage I also have no porblems copying the folder from the extsdcard to pc using mtp connection.
You can flash a separate recovery image with mobile Odin easily, as they are separate from kernel
solved it myself
had same problem also , could not use my s3 in usb mass storage mode with the original usb cable
but it do work when i use the usb cable from my old nokia phone ! you should try with some other cable

Interesting thought, I'll give it a try. Maybe it will help with the desktop transfer, but the real problem is getting 1-to-1 transfers without any conversion from the internal SD, I can copy the directory to the ext SD and then remove it and copy, but as stated that's not practical. Note I often push 3 or 4GB a day and removing the case for each one, would never work. Worse the desktop method does not work under linux (and yes I've tried to get it to work, but its unstable and very slow).

Never had that problem with multiple clockwork transfers .
Copy and paste all my files no problem .

Consider using usb otg and move data to pen drive.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I copy to/from my sd card (internal and external) e.g. clockworkmod folders to pc or network storage over Wi-Fi with ES File Explorer

Has anyone tried using MTP transfer?
I'm trying to copy some files from the phone to the computer but it seems impossible through MTP.
What other methods you can use to transfer files?
I had to use adb pull command to pull all my data before i unlock the bootloader. I'm assuming that custom ROMs will let you connect the phone as an external storage device but what about people who don't/can't install custom rom? Do they have to live with those slow MTP speeds while transferring something to the phone?

I tried everything and the only way i could get adequate speed was from adb.
I'm wondering why google didn't include external storage as an option to connect (in 4.2.2, i assume it's a software feature) like there is in some other phones that does not have sd card slot.
I don't think anything can fix MTP. It's so slow, that I have to use adb to transfer Clockworkmod backups.
I hate MTP so much.
The reason there's no mass storage option is because the geniuses at either LG or Google decided it was a good idea to make external storage a folder in /data/ rather than have a dedicated /sdcard/ partition.
Slow transfers with MTP on Nexus 4
** Note: You need a OTG cable with a power connector & ROOT
Nexus 4 - Stock ROM 4.3 ROOTED.
OTG cable with power connector
USB patch
StickMount app
An earlier version of Directory Opus (sorry, the trial expired and I did not note the exact version) seemed to do a good job of transferring files from the Nexus to the PC (Win 7), but when I tried it on another computer and it no longer worked (transfer stopped before it actually completed).
I tried the following and it worked for me:
Check these links:
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-advanced-usb-otg-nexus-4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/orig-development/usb-otg-externally-powered-usb-otg-t2181820
Use the patch that is suitable for your rom.
install StickMount, connect the usb otg cable to portable drive (in my case a seagate 320 GB Freeagent), the power, and then the phone.
The drive is mounted under /sdcard/usbstorage/sd1
You may need the ntfs-3g file from Chainfire's site.
Transfers were at 7 to 8 MBps from the Nexus to the portable drive [NO PC/Windows involved]. This is better than MTP and DirectoryOpus [when it worked] which was at around 4MBps.
The other option is to use SuperBeam app.
DirectoryOpus might work, but you probably need the right combination of MTP drivers, DirectoryOpus version and Windows version.
I've tried googling this, I'm finding a thousand articles that aren't related to what I want to do.
I want to plug in my phone via USB and be able to see what is taking up so much room and then transfer those files using my computer.
I don't want to connect it as a media device or camera.
I can't remember how I did that before or if I'm thinking of my old skyrocket.
PS. I booted to recovery mode and plugged it in, it's not recognizing on my computer in recovery mode.
USB Mass Storage was removed by Google in Android 4.1.2.

With the MTP mode (Media Transfer Protocol) you can transfer all types of files
Check the current USB settings with *#0808#
I use the program
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/
But I guess that you can't use that for internal storage. Just USB mounted SD card.
Hello,
I'm new to much of this. I want to flash Android M to my Nexus 4 but I am heeding many people's warnings to backup my device. However, nothing I've tried has allowed me to do so. In my searches, I discovered this thread that enables OTG flash drive support for Nexus 4 phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66226991&postcount=48
But when I installed it over the stock TWRP 3.0.2.0, it showed an external slot with 0MB and would not allow me to select it. I've tried various flash drives, all formatted to FAT 32, I've tried a powered external USB 3.0 drive enclosure (NTFS formatted) - nothing works. The cable I'm using is not a "Y" cable, which is why I tried using my external backup drive, which is powered but NTFS. Is that the issue?
Finally I decided, to heck with it, I'll just create a nandroid backup to my phone's storage and then drag it onto my PC, but it only has 4.5GB free space left. I could go and uninstall most of my apps, but what is the point of backing it up then? I need almost 9GB of space on a device that has just 16GB.
This crap is so frustrating. I expect installing Marshmallow would be hard, but I did not expect a backup, which should be a simple operation, to be so challenging Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did you try twrp 2.8.7?

Thanks for the suggestion - I just tried it. Using all the methods listed in my post (using straight non-Y cable) I get not OTG option when specifying storage location - just internal storage. I've ordered a OTG Y cable and will post back here if that helps.
Also, I purchased the "Live" option, thinking that would back my phone up to the cloud. After reading a bit, it appears that premium feature allows you to create a nandroid backup without booting to recovery mode. It's just about useless though because it requires selinux to be set to permissive - AFAICT, selinux is always set to something else and the process to get it set to permissive is pretty advanced and looks like a PITA. I guess the live option would be really cool for you advanced users...

- Have you tried turning on compression and ignoring the disk space in TWRP?
- If that still fails, you can backup one partition at a time, then transfer it by adb before backing up the next partition, etc.
Thanks and solution
Thanks to those of you who suggested different things. The solution ended up being a combination of things - needed the Y cable (that allows power and USB flash drive to be plugged into phone at same time) and the TWRP build for Nexus 4 with OTG support. Once those two things were in place, I was able to select my flash storage device. The backup was right at 9GB - pretty big!
