**Update**
ivanoterra and myself have both used CF-Auto Root on our GE S4's and we both can confirm that it has worked.
this is the file we used: http://download.chainfire.eu/316/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505.zip
**update 2**
More good news, I flashed TWRP using Odin and it worked! TWRP found here: http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/182

Hi folks,
Just got my GE S4 this morning. So far it's awesome. The only problem is that I'm so eager to root this phone and I cannot find any information on how to do it. Any ideas? I'm doubting it's as simple as just using the same method as the regular S4's, but I could easily be wrong.
Also, any information on whether there will be a sub-forum for the GE phones?
Thanks!
Same here
Im on the same road...

I think we'll have to wait for a custom recovery before we can root, methinks.
If you're feeling saucy, you can try 'fastboot oem unlock' and see what that does? (Warning: it may wipe your device, it does for my nexus 10)
EDIT: Looks like auto-root does fastboot oem unlock if you're not unlocked.

Ill try that in a moment... Its recovering my apps... Its like 250 apps.. Its on 32%...
But i guess it wont show as custom, GE edition has a Unlocked Bootloader. It was made to be custom rom friendly....
Even if it counts... It wont matter... Probably a counter reseter will solve it...
Didn't work.

That was going to be my next question - whether Triangle Away works - again, it should, since this is supposed to be identical to GT-i9505...
Sorry for all the Q's. I'm waiting on my device to ship.

Nooooo... You dont know how to flash ?
read the instructions there:
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
(KILL ALL KIES PROCESSES... Before proceding...)

I know how. I've done it many times before this. While flashing, odin crashed. :crying:
Is it possible to flash the GE firmware on the international version? If yes does anyone have a guide?
Okay, it worked. Thought my phone was bricked. I used a different version of Odin and it stopped crashing and worked.
I can now confirm that Auto Root works on the GE S4!
Download mode shows that I'm on a custom binary now. It still says "Write Protection: Enable"
I'm curious to find out what that means. The bootloader is already unlocked. I wonder if a certain partition is locked.
I guess the next question to answer is: Can we use the same recoveries as the i9505? I hope so..

I might be wrong but I don't think download mode supports fastboot. Either that, or I'm doing something wrong. With my phone in download mode and my S4 connected, the command "fastboot devices" doesn't show any devices, but when I plug my N4 in, it shows up. Is there a special fastboot mode that is different from download mode?

All is ok less the modem. You will have to download and extract this MODEM. How?
1. Download ODIN and start it as administrator.
2. Now open the windows taskmaster. End all "Kies" processes.
3. In Odin untick "Auto reboot"
4. For the bootloader select BL and browse to your bootloader file.
5. For the modem select CP/PHONE and browse to your modem file.
The next step is VERY IMPORTANT
6. Power off your phone
7. Start your phone into download mode by holding Home button + Vol down + Power button. Volume Up then (PIC 1)
8. Once your phone is in download mode, connect it to your PC. (Best results always with your original Samsung USB cable)
-Odin should say "Added" now.
9. Press the Start button in Odin and let it do it's magic. Wait. (PIC 2)
10. When Odin shows "PASS" you can unplug your phone.
IMPORTANT: WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE "PASS" DO NOT UNPLUG THE PHONE BEFORE!
11. When you have unplugged your phone, it is still in download mode. Just hold the power button about 8 seconds until your phone reboots.
DONE
Go to Settings/More/About device. There you will see your new baseband.
12. Do this process one time more if u still seeing the old modem/baseband.
Joku1981 thank you for ur help, i installed the modem and now everything works fine!!! thank you very much!!!
after installing the modem, i have received the message to update to android 4.4.2, I'm very happy

Hello
I have F version, country Italy
I tried install a few roms but I always had freeze screen and reboots. So finally tried restore from Odin and I had brick. I used the last firmware from Odin and one from this forum of "Fast download" And this only shows the bootimage and reboot again of freeze
In download mode shows in System: "custom", Recovery: Samsung Oficial
I cant enter on recovery mode
Im not sure if Samsung I still give me "warranty"
Anybody can help me ?
PD: sorry4myenglish
best bet is to try and flash another ROM if you can get into download mode still (making sure that you flash a ROM for the right version of your phone).
Samsung probably wont honor warranty as you tripped KNOX when flashing in the first place (that voids your warranty and I belive download mode states this)
EDIT:
the right version for you is the first link on the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s6-...icial-stock-roms-firmware-aoj5-g928f-t3231589
as long as you have the SMG928F version from Italy

Can you enter download mode? If so then I would probably flash a custom recovery and install custom ROM just to get the phone running again.

Some days ago I had exactly the same problem as you. You need to download "Smart Switch" on PC (something like samsung kies) and then recovery your phone through it. This samsung app will download a new system and completly repair your phone, after that if you want to install audax rom or something else you MUST go to developer options and enable USB DEBUGGING and OEM UNLOCK or you will have the same problem after rebooting phone.
Hope it helps, I bricked my phone for 1 day and managed to repair it with it. ODIN and all other stuff didn't worked.

That message means that SElinux is enforced and the way around that is a custom kernel as the stock on is forcing it always.
Natherul after I bricked my phone by installing audax and the unchecking in dev options "oem unlock" Smart Switch was the only one thing that actually unbricked my phone :good:

The phone saying custom means root has been attempted or some other non official action. The boot image is corrupted or missing it sounds like. That's a soft brick. Download the marshmallow stock firmware for your carrier from sammobile, boot it in download mode and reflash the firmware. It should fix the issue.

Samsung has no UK Vodafone variant for S5.
If you still have the original box you can find "Model: SM-G901blablablabla" there on the sticker.
"blablablabla" contains regional code.

@harryj22
Here's a firmware for you.
You need to download it, unpack and flash via Odin.
There're 4 files in the zip. You need to point Odin to each of them in the appropriate slot.
I.e. AP_xxxx.tar.md5 in AP slot, BL_xxx.tar.md5 in BL slot and so on.
It's VD2 variant, Vodafone Germany.
Should work well in the UK, you only need to select English at the startup.

Not so fast.
But the results look strange.
Please power off the phone and start it in Odin mode (hold power, Vol- and Home, after a message appears press Vol+).
It must look like here: http://dorylabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/samsung-galaxy-s5-download-mode.jpg
Now tell me what's there in "Product name: ???" Is it really SM-G901F or something other?
Is there the name of the product on the sticker under the battery?
One more chance: try to flash that firmware (4-files), but add pit-file before flashing.
You need to download and unzip it.
Insert 4 firmware files in Odin's slots and then insert pit-file.
Pit-file should be inserted in Odin's "Pit" tab, ignore the warning.
Note, this pit-file is for SM-G901F, VD2 firmware (exactly what you've downloaded from my cloud), it may not work with other firmwares.

1. There is not such thing as boot recovery mode. That is a description of the problem. There are only four modes in which a powered-off S5 would go, no matter the version. Normal Boot, Recovery, Download Mode (sometimes known as ODIN Mode) and Charging Mode.
2. Your problem is that the sbl1 partition doesn't exist due to an emmc fail. Read the part i've put in bold. The bootloader is missing because your eMMC died. Go and get it replaced and stop wasting your time trying to load firmwares when it simply can't.

It's a logical assumption but not the only possible, I think.
That's why we're still talking about this phone.
The bootloader may be damaged because somebody tried to flash something wrong, for example. This is a more optimistic assumption and it has not been refuted till now.

To say the truth, I've never seen this screen before.
I don't know what it is and I'm sure you don't know too.
But look: in recovery the first line says "Android recovery", in Odin mode the first line says "Odin mode".
I've just assumed that the first line in this mode gives the same information.
As for the number of "boot modes", have you ever seen something like on the photo below?
So I want to say: I'd bet 10:1 you're right. But let's give OP a chance to test every possible option before this phone goes to trash.

1. This phone doesn't need to go into the trash. It can be fixed. I mean its fault is written right on screen: mmc_read failed. Isn't that English? Let me translate it for you: sbl2(aboot) can't read anything from the emmc.
2. For the past 3 years I have been running a phone repair shop in Akihabara where 80% of the customers that come in with a Samsung device have had either their eMMC or software go wrong. And in 99% of these cases, the phone was fixed just by changing the eMMC and rewriting all the bootloaders: NON-HLOS, sbl1, aboot, sdi, rpm and tz in that order.
3. In recovery, on my device, it says Team Win Recovery Project. Is it recovery? Yes. ODIN Mode or Download Mode are the same, the name is interchangeable.
L.E. This BOOT RECOVERY MODE looks more or less like Download/ODIN Mode. Except it has been hijacked by the error message (first like in red) and a very very lackluster information: mmc_read failed.
Well, what happens if you hold Power button for 15-20 sec. in this "Boot recovery mode"?[/QUOTE]

So....Firstly,thanks for all the help guys,i have read all comments above and honestly don't undertand a lot of whats been said, due to my lack of inexperience.
At the moment I'm stuck with a non working phone,so have nothing to lose by trying to do something myself,
this emmmc thing.... is it a costly repair?.....can do it myself and gain experience ?,I'm not afraid to disassemble the handset.
Once again thanks for all your efforts.

It is going to be VERY difficult because it requires a rework station, a new eMMC chip, flux, and balls (cojones) the size of the Hoover Dam to do it yourself without proper equipment or any know-how. The rework station is 3000$USD+ and the knowledge is priceless. I am really sorry.

You must flash oreo stock again
OMG! It works!! Tested on J701F
I had to OEM unlocked because the touch screen stopped working after the phone automatically updated to OREO 8.1 (because the touch screen was replaced and obviously Samsung dropped support for non-oem touch panels in this update) so I have looked everywhere for solution until I found it here http://www.technocaretricks.com/samsung-j701f-touch-not-working-after-update-to-8-1-oreo/
But flashing that TAR file wasn't possible without changing the RMM state.
Thanks a lot, you are a lifesaver

PC time bro
First. Do the process and flash oreo stock again and then you can see the oem unlock option.. After that you can flash twrp and the rom that you want
deleted.
Thanks. I follow instructions and I can manage to flash twrp
And helios kernel.the only thing I notice after all those flashing is when I check dev option is OEM unlock is gone again. But don't care this moment because I manage to root my phone and that is ok. thanks again
