[Q] Phone got very hot and battery drained in 2 hours??? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my new Note 3 was fully charged this morning and when I got to class I noticed it had heated up A LOT. It was very, very warm. I had all the apps shut down, Mobile Data turned off, Wifi turned off, GPS/location services turned off, etc and it still died in 2 hours. I was concerned because it was heating up very hot too, so I took the case off and as soon as I returned to my room I plugged it in. The battery went from 100% to 2%.
Why did my Note heat up like that and die when nothing was currently running on the device? Help!!! I don't want this to happen again :crying:

That sounds extremely wrong. I would return it personally if something like that happened to me. My note 3 has never felt even the slightest bit hot to me. It could be something you downloaded, or a crazy app doing something in the background. but for a 3200 mah battery to drain 100% to 2% in 2 hours seems like something is faulty.
I cant even drain the phone that fast on purpose if i tried.

Agreed , just return it or warranty it .

There is an anomaly with you phone. I've had this problem before but on a Motorla Droid Bionic. I was tethering while on a custom rom and my battery went from 96% to 2% in 2 hours. Sorry if it's off topic, my JuggerNote3 has not had a battery issue like you mentioned, so far. Best of luck of getting a replacement and fixing your battery issue

Thanks everyone - I am going to try and fix this problem. Additionally, my phone has also restarted 2 times. This concerns me as well. Does the Note3 need to update by restarting? If not, then I definitely have a battery problem.

My phone is fine now
SO I never got around to doing anything about this problem, and it never happened again. I've had this Note 3 for about 2 months and now it's fine. I met a guy who also said this happened to his N3 (more than once) but his phone still functioned fine. So it seems like maybe it got overworked too soon after I got it??? I'm not sure but it's all good now! I absolutely love this phone, and would recommend it to others. Looks like I'll be a Samsung user from now on

[Q] Weird battery usage

Hi, I've had my Play for about a week now and absolutely love it. The only thing I don't get about it is it's weird battery usage.. it seems to charge slower than it uses for one thing, and the usage seems kind of random.
Last night I went to bed with about 70% battery usage. This morning I woke up and my phone was off. I tried turning it on while charging but it didnt work (not even a charging indicator), I took out the battery and put it back in which got it working. Once it booted I checked the battery usage and it showed it basically went from 70% to 0% at once..
Also when checking what processes used the battery it seems off.. Camera 15% while I hardly used it, Keypad 5% seems weird as well.
Anyone know what's going on? Is this a common thing with the Play or is my device possibly malfunctioning?
Thanks
Your usage seems nothing like mine. Mine says standby, display and wifi take the most and doesn't even show keypad. And my battery draining is always consistent, it doesn't fluctuate like yours did.

@Naatan I've sent my device to service for the second time now. First time it was something different than this, but since i got it back last monday it has acted like you posted, not exactly the same as you describe but close. My phone also turns of during the night at some point, first i thought it was drained. Had to pull the battery first and then leave it in the charger untill the charging symbol showed before i could boot again and when booted up the lockscreen showed 35% one morning and 62% another morning. So my phone is not draining but acting weird. Even when i turn it off i have to pull the battery to turn it on again. My phone is updated to the newest firmware 4.0.A.2.368 - 2.3.3.
As i said it's at a service place right now (they broke my volume button last time they fixed it, so i had to go back) and when i get it back from repair i will downgrade to 2.3.2 and run it for a week and see if the same thing happens and then i will update to newest for a week and see what happens. I think it's a bug in the new update, randomly hitting devices as they are not all alike as in the hardware behaves a little different from device to device, hence when oc'ing you have to do it a little at a time cuz one clock works perfectly on one device but messes with another.
Will report my findings.

My cell standby is 56% battery usage and its on 11% battery and only off charge 12 hours ago. Horrible atm

I haven't charged mine in 3 days, and have 35% left, with around 3 hours use on wifi for browsing and Facebook

My battery has certainly suffered with the update. The battery life used to be pretty awesome, now id compare it to an iPhone struggling to last through the day. And thats with pretty minimal use.

What's the mystery with this 4.0.a.2.368 update.. I got kinda same problem too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17545087&postcount=13

98% deep sleep but 48% battery drain? What gives!

I charged my phone for a little bit last night because it was a little low (48%). I took it off at about 77%. I don't understand what happened. Why did it just drop like a rock? Phone is AT&T LG g2, stock 4.2.2 rooted.
Jesus that can't be good.
I have no clue about this one; it's just too weird.
I'd probably let it fully deplete and then completely charge it and see if it ever does it again.

That's what I'm going to do. Unfortunately this is not the first time it has happened. This happened about 2 weeks ago, but then my GSAM showed a HUGE signal decrease at the same time my battery drained, so I figured it was just that.
This time I just do not understand. I've had this phone since August or September and it's been great until this randomly started happening in the past couple weeks.

Well it says 66% of that was phone radio signal. So that is the problem 90%. I had similat problem only it was while charging, so my phone wasnt charging almost at all, when i restarted it was charging fine (from 20% to 100% in 90 min) . What happened when u picked it up, was it still doing that? Or maybe its a some kind of cpu loop if that is even possible. Some people was complaining about nexus 5 rapidly discharging with combo of some lite apps (news readers).

Yes even after picking it up, the drain continued. I've let it die and am charging the phone while it's off but I don't know if the problem will be fixed.
The youtube app was causing a major battery drain for me a few days ago,now I close it after using it just in case . I'm in the habit of checking the phone's temperature at all times :/
it has a great battery life, especially sceen on time, but the standby isn't top notch at all, I think it's poor software optimization on LG's end, I hope 4.4.2 fixes it.
charge till full. then reboot and check battery percentage.

[Q] Heat problem

Hello,
This night I left my phone plugged in to charge it.
When I woke up 6h30 later, it was boiling hot and not just hot like the times I play games on it. It was hot all over, front and back!
I unplugged it and the phone switched off by itself.
I waited 15 minutes for it to cool and then switched it back on.
It's working fine but I'm afraid it's lifespan has been dramatically reduced.
I've attache the battery settings screen after the incident.
Apparently, the phone charge blocked something like half an hour after being plugged in and the overheat lasted 6 hours...
And the security system activated only after unplugging.
My questions :
Do you think the phone could be badly damaged?
Is there a way to check the battery temp history?
If the phone still works fine, should I still give google a call?
Thanks
I've been experiencing hear issues lately as well. I looked into weekdays running in the background and what is keeping my phone awake. Tweaked a few songs here and there. So far it hasn't been getting quite as hot, but it's just my first day results.
A while ago I was using a third party charger overnight from 10% or so. After roughly 6 hours it was only at 49%and screaming hot. Changed up chargers since and haven't had that issue.

Use the charger provided along with the device or one with a similar ampere rating for best results.
and for your above battery issue try to switch off the device and charge, see if that helps. If it's just a calibration issue then it'll be fixed. Otherwise you'll have to get the battery replaced.
dont let phone on chrging whole nght.. it effets btry life.
I had an issue with my battery and heat. The phone was getting warmer every day (or week).
I noticed that their was a little bump on the back cover. After having removed it, i realized that the battery had nearly doubled its size.
I purchased a new battery (original), and i don't have any heat issue anymore.
The old battery was a year and a half old.

Tab E Stuck Overheated. Please Help

Okay so I'm getting very worried here, but I got my tab e about 15 days ago, meaning I'm one day to late to return it.
And earlier today all of a sudden the upper area of my tablet where the charging port, camera, and samsung name started getting very very hot, like to hot to touch hot. And it's been like that ever since, like 5 hours now.
I had it off for almost an hour, how hot it was never changed.
I let the battery drain till it went dead thinking if the battery was empty there wouldn't be power to heat anything up.
Made no difference, or any change what so ever.
I have no idea what's going on here and it's gotten me very worried as I said up above.
Everything still works perfectly, but the battery drains so fast.
Please tell me someone in here knows whats wrong. And please let it not be that my tablet is defective, cause as I said, can't bring it back as of today.
Sorry, I don't know how to solve your problem without more information, [installed battery draining apps, heavy video or screen usage, gaming, etc] but unless you rooted it, you should be covered under warranty even if you can't return it to the store where you bought it. Even if you are rooted you may be able to return to stock and get a warranty return through Samsung.
Same problem
I had the battery replaced done but it seems to be getting hot again
When i let it idle overnight from 91% 10pm and when i woke up this morning the it dropped to 0%.

Battery issues, confused.

6P has been shutting down early for a while now, usually like 10% or less which never really bothered me. Battery life seemed decent, but I never really tracked it.
Last week it started going off at 15-30% at times. But it can be random. Might go below 10% one time, next shuts off at 30%. This was on a prior version of Pure Nexus. So I tried updating to the latest build. First charge it shut down at 40%. Same crap tho, random shut off times. Today it shut down at 48%. By shut down, I mean it just suddenly gives the low battery warning, reports 0% and turns off. Many times I can restart the phone, and it will say like 1-3%, and let me use it for a while before turning off again. This most recent one at the 48% shutdown, I restarted it, showed 1%, used it for a while before it turned off again. Restarted, now shows 18%.
Wtf? Is this just a charge level reporting issue? Tried battery repair/calibration apps/techniques with no success. Nothing looks bad with regards to apps/services draining the battery. I tried accubattery and says I'm at 70% health. Don't even get 2 hours of SOT. Have a replacement battery in the mail. Think this will solve the issues?
It's known issue with some factory battery's for some reason the phone is thinking the battery is low and shutting down even though it's reporting let's say 50%. I didn't have this issue until I bought a cheap replacement would shut down at random percentages especially when opening something power hungry like camera. The only thing you can do is get a replacement and change or send it in to get changed. If you replace it yourself I suggest testing the battery before you put the phone back together. I think the 6p is a great phone and worth it to replace the battery. That just my opinion best of luck. ?

@ 70% your battery has been toast for quite a while. This degradation doesn't happen overnight. If you did your research and purchased one of the "good" replacement batteries from a known good vendor then, yes it will likely completely solve your problem. If you just bought a random battery from Ebay or BFE, then you may have another dud on your hands. Suggest testing the new battery with Accubattery before sealing it back up. Best of luck.

Interesting. Did notice a couple of the times it shut down, and it was this last time at 48% as well, was when opening a power hungry game. And yes I agree the 6p is still awesome today, by far the longest I've had a phone. Considered getting the Pixel 2 XL, but it's a waste of money to me if I can get the 6P working well again.

Hmm, yeah I grabbed one off ebay. Had over 500 sold though, so hopefully not too terrible, but I will test.
I think it has really degraded in the last ~6 months. Possibly from numerous partial charges? Got a new job in April, and I'm often traveling to different sites only 10-15 minutes apart. During this time plug it into my car for Android Auto.
Thanks for the help guys!
In the same boat (But I have a solution for me)
2 weeks ago I upgraded from a beaten GS6 Edge and I am quite fond of my new phone. However I started experiencing this issue, ignored it for the first week since my S6 at 100% battery would die in an hour or two, if I'm lucky. Then the battery problem became an interest to me. I had read a lot of threads on the issue, some saying its a hardware problem, and some saying just a software bug that hasn't (or can't) be fixed. SOOOO at this point I said screw it and just accepted my phone battery as it is. Installed Dirty Unicorns Rom, messed with settings, and boom a breakthrough (I think). DU has a feature called smart pixels in which to save battery life turns off a percentage of the pixels. Wasn't to fond of this at first, but in order to make my 60 - 70 percent battery last i set it to the lowest setting. Every since then I have had maybe one random shutdown, it's only been a week and a lot could change but for me its working pretty well.
Sidenote: I found that not using camera apps, nor Google assistant had also prevented random shutdowns (this helped me with smart pixels enabled and disabled, if you wanna give it ago on stock)
Hello guys. I am experiencing random shutting downs on my phone too. I bought it in January 2017.
What I have observed and today was confirmed is that I have these unexpected shutting down when I charge the phone with fast charge. Today my phone was at 60% and shut down. When I plugged my phone on the charger, the phone was again at 60%!!! How was it possible? I think the problem might be the battery or the internal controller of the charging system...
